Developer's Corner / C# Help Needed.
« on: October 25, 2014, 06:10 PM »
Long story short...

I am trying to do something which, because of the WebCore I am using, has left me with very VERY few options as to how I can achieve it.

Basically I am trying to hook "Desktop Notifications" sent to the client via a website (Usually sent by websites which heavily rely on WebSockets).

My problem is...Awesomium (The WebCore I use) is very badly documented...and the information I HAVE found, is leading me to believe this isn't possible.

SO...What I need to do...Is something like have my Software know when it activates the soundcard (It sounds a beep when a notification is received) - That way I can provide the visual popup window using a different method (Therefore re-creating the functionality one would otherwise receive).

Does anybody know of ANY method I could use in order to somehow register when the Software activates the Audio Device in order to play the "Beep" (It shows in Mixer Settings) so I can actually do something when that has happened?

In fake-code, I would want to do something like this:

Code: C# [Select]
  1. if (AudioBeep.IsPlaying == true)
  2. {
  3. //Do Something
  4. }
  5. else
  6. {
  7. //Do Something Else.
  8. }

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated!!!

Living Room / Graphics Designers - DOCO NEEDS YOU!
« on: October 25, 2014, 03:22 PM »
  • Are you a Graphics Designer?
  • Are you willing to spend an hour or so helping out DoCo?

If you can answer yes to both of the above questions...then I have a follow-up question for you...WHY have you not been in the NANY 2015 section yet?!  ;D

Mouser has been asking around for somebody to create this years NANY 2015 Mug Designs!!!!!

Other things we could use to make this year's event special:

We have a standard mug design we tend to use, but it's always great if we can get an optional alternative design or two.   If you have artistic talents, we'd love to have some more mug designs that look different.  The resolution should be 1662x600.

Here's the standard design to show you the size and basic information on the mugs: (see attachment in previous post)Some alternatives: (see attachment in previous post) (see attachment in previous post)
Ideally, any mug design should have a prominent role for Cody, our bird/duck mascot.

I have posted this here in case any potential kind graphics person happened to have missed this call for help in the NANY forum section.  :D

Non-Windows Software / Calculate Linux Provides Consistency by Design
« on: October 25, 2014, 02:50 PM »
Calculate Linux has a rather interesting strategy for desktop environments. It is characterized by two flavors with the same look and feel. That does not mean that the inherent functionality of the KDE and Xfce desktops are compromised. Rather, the Calculate Linux developers did what you seldom see within a Linux distribution with more than one desktop option: They unified the design.

Living Room / Online harassment affects 40% of US adults, report says
« on: October 25, 2014, 02:44 PM »

Some 40% of adults have experienced online harassment, according to a study from the US Pew Research Internet Project.

From name-calling to other threats, harassment is a common part of online life for many, its research suggests.

While men are more likely to experience name-calling, women are more vulnerable to sexual harassment and stalking.

The report comes amid a rise in social media abuse aimed at women in the games industry.

The report found that 73% of American adult internet users had witnessed online harassment - from being called offensive names to witnessing someone being stalked online.

It found that young adults - aged 18-29 - are most likely to experience online harassment, with 65% of internet users in this age group claiming to have fallen victim.

The vast majority of harassment took place on social networking sites, according to the research.

Living Room / The Eagle has landed: Nasa launches free sound library
« on: October 25, 2014, 02:43 PM »

Historical audio from Nasa missions has been uploaded to a free sound library.

More than 60 samples have been added to the agency's new dedicated Soundcloud account, but listeners are unable to leave comments underneath the files.

Astronaut communications, including "Houston, we've had a problem" and "the Eagle has landed", can be heard - as well as some more abstract noises made by working spacecraft and debris.

In space itself, sound is unable to travel as there is no air.

Living Room / Is technology killing old loved books?
« on: October 25, 2014, 02:41 PM »
In this age of electronic books, are we losing the magic of passing on a well-thumbed paperback, perhaps with a name scribbled inside - or even notes in the margin that tell a story of where a book has been? Or can the two happily co-exist, giving us the best of both worlds?
Josh Spero, author of Second Hand Stories and editor of Spear's Magazine, and the author Erica Wagner, a former literary editor at the Times newspaper, mulled over the question of new tech and old books.

Living Room / Watch A Hornet Be Cooked Alive By Bees
« on: October 25, 2014, 02:38 PM »

A single Japanese giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia japonica) can kill forty honeybees a minute. A small group of them can decimate an entire bee colony. The hornet’s scissor-like teeth can wreak havoc on their prey so swiftly that Japanese honeybees had to adapt to survive.

Instead of stinging the intruder, the honeybees swarm the hornet and begin vibrating, raising their collective temperature to 117 degrees Fahrenheit (47.2 ºC) and turning their crush of bodies into somewhat of a convection oven. While the honeybees can tolerate temperatures of 118 degrees Fahrenheit (47.8 ºC), Japanese giant hornets can only tolerate 115 degrees (46.1 ºC).

Watch the honeybees save their colony in a three minute video below.

Felix Baumgartner shattered the world record for highest-altitude jump when he famously plummeted 128,100 feet to Earth on October 9, 2012. Sponsored by Red Bull, the event was an international phenomenon as 12.6 million people watched the event live. In the early morning hours of October 24, 57-year-old computer scientist Alan Eustace quietly broke that record by completing a jump from over a mile higher at 135,890 feet.

He had partnered with Paragon Space Development Corporation and was testing one of their life support spacesuits; the event was not done merely for publicity. The suit protected Eustace from the drastic temperature changes as he ascended and then descended through the atmosphere, and provided pure oxygen for him to breathe.

DC Gamer Club / Are Ubisoft trying to kill PC gaming?
« on: October 24, 2014, 04:18 PM »
Ubisoft has since confirmed that PC owners wanting to play Assassin’s Creed Unity should have at least a GTX 680/ Radeon HD 7970 GPU and an Intel Core i5 2500K/ AMD FX-8350 CPU. a 64-bit OS is also required. Also, laptop GPUs aren’t “officially supported”. It is still recommended that you own at least a GTX 780 or an AMD R9 290X along with an Ivy-bridge Intel Core i7 3770 CPU.

Would YOU build a $2000 system just to play "Yet another Assassin's Creed" title?

Original Story:

The official Assassin’s Creed Unity PC specification requirements may have leaked and they are pretty high. Minimum CPU and GPU requirements may restrict the game to those who built a fairly high end PC sometime in the last two years. Minimum CPU requirement features Intel’s Sandy Bridge Core i5 2500K or an AMD FX-8350. The recommended CPU is an Ivy-bridge Intel Core i7 3770.
PC owners will need at least 6GB of RAM, a trend that began to surface just last year. On the GPU side of things a GTX 680 or Radeon HD 7970 are the minimum while the recommended GPUs include a GTX 780 or R9 290x. The game will also require 50GB of free hard drive space.  The overly high minimum Processor and Graphics Card requirements restrict the game to those who built fairly high end PCs sometime since 2012.

N.A.N.Y. 2015 / NANY 2015 Donation Support Idea
« on: October 22, 2014, 11:56 AM »
Hey guys,

Just a quick idea...I am hoping other people might follow in my footsteps with their NANY 2015 releases by means of offering multiple ways for people to Donate to the continued development of your Software.  What I mean by this is letting people choose to make a donation to charity instead of donating directly to YOU...or donating to DC as a whole (Making a Site Fund Donation).

I have done this myself in my SlackyApp release, and have opted to allow people to donate to the RSPCA as well as DonationCoder as a whole!

Hopefully this will spur some charitable support from people and will keep within the spirit of DonationCoder by means of not really being bothered about the aspect of money when it comes to releasing Software here :)

Hopefully somebody will follow me on this!!! (Obviously feel free to choose your own charities!)

Version History
  • v0.3.0.0 - Added Cookie, Cache and Sessions Support
Author Me
Donations Donate To Me

Description
This is a Dedicated Windows client for Slack, with the ability to be minimized to the tray.  Inspired by DC User app103.  Slack lacked a dedicated Windows application, so I was asked to build one.  After fighting with Gecko and WebKit for Visual Studio and failing, I found a way to get it working (Slack does not work with IE).

Currently in Pre-Alpha so may contain bugs/errors and missing features.

Features
• Easily connect directly to your Slack Domain.
• Minimize To System Tray (To keep it out of the way).
• Links within the app open in your default browser so the app is NEVER directed away from Slack.com
• Status Bar:  See what links you are about to visit when you hover the mouse over them.
• Show/Hide Balloon Tip on Minimize.
• Remember the last Slack domain used, in the text box.
• Stores Cookies/Web-Sessions/Cache Locally Within The SlackyApp folder.

Planned Features
• Progress Bar: Gives you an indication that things are actually loading.

Downloading
Sometimes you may face an issue when downloading the installer and see the following:
SlackyApp Download Issue.png

Simply press the "Keep" button (Chrome) - Other browser may also have a complain about it, but there will always be a way to install it anyway!

Usage
Installation
Run the installer and follow instructions. (Follow the video below for help if you need it):

Updating
SlackyApp uses a lightweight version of DCUpdater to check for file version changes.  Simply right click the notification icon (Near your clock) and click "Update" or run Update.exe within the application folder.

Windows 8/8.1 users may get moaned at by the Operating System by a means of a large green bar across your screen telling you that I am an evil evil person that wants to steal your children and eat your pets and because I didn't pay Microsoft to recognize me as a real developer...then the Software I have made is probably completely messed up and will do stupid things to your computer.  Putting it simply...it lies...this Software will do NOTHING bad...I install NO extras into the software...no bundled toolbars, no adware, no malware, no spyware, no viruses, no keyloggers, no homepage changes, no changes to your search provider, no nag screens....the ONLY thing you will get, it SlackyApp...which does ONLY what it says on the feature list here.

I am fully open and transparent about everything I do and if you have any problems, then let me know ASAP.

Using the Application
Open and use - very simple interface.

Uninstallation
Run the Uninstaller

Known Issues
• If large amounts of data are passing through Slack at any one time (IE: Oeruse of the Giphy Integration), Window will go blank due to a possible memory leak - Bug has not been identified fully but I am aware of this happening.
• Cache and Memory not being cleared properly. - Resolution for this has been (hopefully) identified and will be resolved in the next build.

Please report any by Clicking Here.

More video game news sites must place a spotlight on the misogynistic abuse that could drive women from the industry, a developer has demanded.

Brianna Wu, who said she faced death threats after speaking out, said the sites could help change the industry's culture.

A debate is raging in the sector about claims of corrupt relationships between some developers and reviewers.

But it has also regularly veered into the issues of feminism and misogyny.

"Every woman I know is terrified that what happened to me will happen to them next. And this is a true campaign of terror on women in the field," she told BBC News.

Ms Wu fled her home on Friday 10 October after graphic sexual threats were made against her.

The next day, she shared screenshots of tweets from one user who had threatened to murder her and her family, and had posted her home address to prove they knew where she lived.

The abuse came after she shared pictures on Twitter mocking players with sexist attitudes, who had used the Twitter hashtag GamerGate.

'Drive women out'
Her latest comments coincide with Ada Lovelace Day, an annual event celebrating women's feats in technology and science.

Ms Wu, head of development at games company Giant Spacekat, also said that internet services needed to do more to help police trace those who posted abuse.

"As it currently is, when crimes occur, law enforcement frequently cannot locate the people that are doing it," she said.

"We need to get more serious as a culture about making it possible for law enforcement to act in very serious situations like this.

"GamerGate could very seriously drive most women out of the industry. I realise that's a very strong statement and I absolutely mean it. I don't know a single woman in this field who is not asking herself if she wants to stay.

Ms Wu's experience was similar to those of games reviewer Anita Sarkeesian and developer Zoe Quinn, who were also on the receiving end of abuse.

Allegations about Ms Quinn's personal relationships with journalists were presented as evidence of "possible corruption" in the industry.

Ms Sarkeesian was hounded after releasing the latest in a series of video blogs that criticised bestselling games for propagating sexist stereotypes.

Developer's Corner / Drupal Fixes Highly Critical SQL Injection Flaw
« on: October 15, 2014, 09:56 PM »
Drupal has patched a critical SQL injection vulnerability in version 7.x of the content management system that can allow arbitrary code execution. The flaw lies in an API that is specifically designed to help prevent against SQL injection attacks. "Drupal 7 includes a database abstraction API to ensure that queries executed against the database are sanitized to prevent SQL injection attacks," the Drupal advisory says. "A vulnerability in this API allows an attacker to send specially crafted requests resulting in arbitrary SQL execution. Depending on the content of the requests this can lead to privilege escalation, arbitrary PHP execution, or other attacks."
