Thanks for your suggestion Armando, but I just don't care for SQLNotes at all.  Hate the interface and the way it works with a passion. :(

They don't bother me at all, I see them as a necessary, and barely bothersome, evil.  I have no trouble using them and appreciate that they significantly reduce, or entirely eliminate, automated spam on forums.  I have seen some forums that didn't use them rendered completely unusable.

I don't really like Evernote 3 that much so far. Your database is on their server - no more local databases. And your backups are also online. If you have no internet connection you're out of luck.

Also, it appears that there is no more auto-category tagging, severely reduced category intersection features. By trying to make Evernote an "access from anywhere" application they have placed a lot of limits on it. The beta forum doesn't seem to be a very happy place lately.

Jim

If this is indeed the direction they are going, then I will never use the new version.  I require my data to be local.  Period.

Edit: Maybe it is time to revisit note taking software?  I have been searching for the perfect note taking program for a long time.  I used to use Keynote but after that died, I moved to Neomem.  After that one died, I moved to Evernote but wasn't entirely happy with the tape thing.  There was a period where I tried out OneNote but I hated that thing immediately.  I want a good old tree based note taking program with rich text editing capabilities in notes.  Why do people think they have to reinvent the note taking app in such weird ways like Evernote?  One feature I would like in a note taking program is a new note hotkey that I can use from anywhere and it JUST pops up a note entry dialog with the ability to select a category from a drop down and the editing controls.  Nice and compact, when you use the hotkey from Evernote it brings up the whole ugly unwieldy app interface.  Why does taking notes have to be rocket science?

What is necessary is entirely dependent on the people that will use the system.  At home I don't use any form of anti-spyware, anti-virus, or firewall.  I have my Linksys router configured to be relatively secure but other than that, thats all I need.  99.9% of the rest of the population needs some form of protection though, as they don't know how to not get infected like I do.  The thing to understand is there is not a single piece of software, or any combination of software, that can keep a sufficiently determined user from getting infected.  The most important part of the equation is education of the person at the keyboard.  Then, for most people, a reasonable level of protection will suffice.  But, ultimately, the most important thing is the person sitting at the keyboard.

Lately, I find that the Microsoft OneCare product is nice.  Reasonably priced, reasonably effective, and here is the good part, doesn't molest the hell out of a user's PC like anything with Symantec or McAfee in the name.

Mouser's Zone / Re: Mouser - a plea from your users!
« on: January 25, 2008, 09:31 AM »
This thread is a little old, but Im going to post on it anyway!  Take that.

Mouser makes awesome software! But, he doesn't seem to be able to name apps. Hahah.  One thing I hate is apps with phrases for a name.  Just drives me up a wall.  The one that I hate the most (name of course, love the app) is CH+S.  Just horrid and unwieldy.  I don't like FARR but I could live with it.

I like the idea of a unified branding name thing as suggested above, thats cool to me.  And I really disagree with Mouser that its too late to rename his apps, its never too late.  People do it all the time.

Coding Snacks / Re: Idea: TCP/IP Configuration Save/Restore
« on: January 23, 2008, 04:23 PM »
With NetSetMan, "out of the box" it would say no adapter found since the settings.ini file is not populated.  If you press the "Refresh" button it would read your network adapters, populate the  drop down box and save it in the settings.ini file.

To use on another machine just delete the settings.ini file and the app will create a new one.

To use it portably, install with installer and copy the install directory to another place, excluding the unins000.exe and unins000.dat files.

Oh wow, weird.  I never even thought to hit the refresh button initially.  I mean, thats something that should happen automatically on program start.  Its so obvious that I never even imagined that someone would write a program that way. haha

Thanks for the reply Patthecat.

Re: Netsetman, at first I thought your input would help a lot, while not perfect I thought it would make it work for my purposes, but then when testing its ability to do what I need, I realized it didn't recognize the network adapter in my machine.  Then I tried it on several others, and the same thing, the dropdown box at the top just said no adapter found or something.  At first I though it might have been because I was trying to use it portably (which is one of my requirements) and something needed wasn't installed.  So I actually installed it on one of the machines and got the same issue.  So, unfortunately this one wont work.

Re: Technitium MAC Address Changer, besides just being weirdly designed and just plain uncomfortable to use, I couldn't find any way to actually save the current config to a preset.  I was able to create a preset to enable DHCP, but not one to reapply the current config.  To be honest, as odd as this one is, I would rather keep doing it manually than use it.

Edit: One other thing I hate about the TMAC one, is it defaults to close to the tray and there is no way I could find to turn off this "feature".  That kind of thing drives me wacko! haha

Unfortunately neither of those work either.

NetSetMan does not have the ability to save the current configuration (so I cant store it then pop it back in when im done) and Ipswitcher does not work as a portable app.  I know I didn't state the portability as a requirement explicitly, but I did imply it when I said I want to run it off a USB tech tool hard drive.   Both of those programs were designed to make it easier to reconfigure a portable machine when moving from network to network.  I am looking for exactly the opposite.  I want to make it easier to reconfigure multiple machines on one network! :)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Portable Registry Tool(s)

I'm not sure if this will work for you, but I use:

http://www.resplendence.com/registrar

To do this task.  While not technically a portable program, I found that I could install the lite version, copy the installed directory and then uninstall it then run it mostly portably off my tech tool hard drive (usb).  Im pretty sure it creates the program directory under the software key but to be honest that doesn't bother me and I have never bothered to check.

Thats a neat little app, but it doesn't do most of what I want.  It doesn't have the ability to save the current config, only to apply saved profiles.  I read through the linked thread, but there was nothing there either.  Basically what I am looking for is a program that I can save some profiles (mostly 1, a DHCP enabled profile, but more is nice too) and it allows me to store the current ip configuration of the machine and then apply a saved profile, like the DHCP enabled profile.  Then when I am done, it would allow me to reapply the original configuration.

Coding Snacks / Idea: TCP/IP Configuration Save/Restore
« on: January 22, 2008, 08:14 AM »
I work on people's computers for a living and often find myself having to change their IP configuration as a test for networking problems.  I was doing this yesterday, first I go to a command prompt and do an "ipconfig /all > ip.txt" command so I can restore the config.  I was thinking how cool it would be if I had a little app that I can run that will save that ip configuration to a text file unique to that pc, maybe one named for the machines host name so it will know what was that machines original config and then you can have some presets for other configurations (like a straight dhcp one) you can select and load with a couple of clicks.  Then you can revert the changes with a click or two.  Any geeks want to second me on this one? :)

Skrommel's Software / ScreamerMenu
« on: January 21, 2008, 05:02 PM »
Hey Skrommel, I have been using Screamer for quite a while now and semi-recently found your menu for it.  A lot of the features don't really have much use for the way I use it (I only use it to listen to 2 streams) but the record option is very interesting for me, since I recently figured out that I can use screamer to record a stream (talk radio) and use it as a sort of PVR for online talk radio along with Winamp.  This allows me to pause the stream as I answer the phone or talk to a customer, and fast forward through the boring parts (after establishing a buffer).

Anyway, I tried the record scheduler but it didn't seem to work for me, but thats probably because its never running when the schedule is set to start.  Is there any way the program can be set to check for missed schedules and pick it up where it is instead of ignoring the schedule entirely if it misses the start time?

I'm not sure if this is the sort of response that Mouser was looking for, but what the heck, its here anyway.

Personally, I don't see a problem with the forum as it is.  That is not to say it can't actually go down hill and become a cess pit, but of all the forums I have seen this place is the best self policed forum I have ever seen.  I can't imagine anyone actually being offended here.  Of course, I am almost impossible to offend so maybe im not a good judge.  Either way, this whole thread just appears to me as attempting to solve an non-existent problem.  Do we need some sort of censor mechanism?  Not trying to offend CodeTrucker of course, but he seems to be super sensitive if this site has in any way offended him, and if that is the case, the internet just may not be the place for him to be.  Just my opinion.

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your music player of choice?
« on: January 08, 2008, 08:18 AM »
I use Subsonic + WinAMP to view and play my music, and Subsonic to manage my tags and such.  I love Subsonic because it lets me stream my music to work or wherever.  Like the interface and how it organizes based on files instead of tags.

Ralf Maximus: (executable from disk) load/init speed, not render speed...

Ah, well thats a small distinction, since you load a lot of IE while loading windows and it sits in memory when not in use.  I think I would rather that not be the case and pay a few extra seconds loading the browser when I use it, so to me the  Firefox implementation is the advantage, not the IE6 one.

I have it installed on my work PC, so far it does seem to work better.  And faster.  Too early to tell though.

Not to get back on topic or anything, but... :)

I actually get a huge kick out of the mac pc ads.  At first, I was a little irritated, but after I saw the third or so one, I realized they are comedy gold, and now I just look at them as little 2 minute comedy skits.  And they are funny!  But not in the way Apple intended, I am sure.

Living Room / Re: To wide-screen or not to wide-screen
« on: November 08, 2007, 12:47 PM »
Ah.  MDI.  Boo, hiss. :-)

Everything I use has floating and/or tear-off dockable toolbars which can be dragged wherever.  So I've not encountered this particular issue.

You're right: if the app doesn't support floating toolbars, a wide-screen solution would be best.

I disagree.  The ultimate best is dual wide screens :)   Best of both worlds for me!

F0dder, I am curious about the comment you made where you felt the 4:3 display is better for coding.  I couldn't disagree more, and I am curious what your reasoning is.
I tend to maximize my apps, it's faster than manually resizing... a text editor (notepad++) becomes way too wide this way, and even visual studio with solution explorer, toolbox etc. open is quite wide enough. On a widescreen, there's simply too much wasted space if you maximize, in my opinion, and I'm afraid that might encourage having way too long source lines.

Ah ok, I understand where you are coming from.  For me, personally, I still disagree.  :)  I also maximize windows most of the time and I find the extra width to be more help than hinderance.  I personally find the widescreen format to be, in all ways, better than the old 4:3.  I like it wide, so much so that I have two wide screen displays side by side.  Guess its different strokes and all that.

I am in the pro-widescreen camp, firmly.  I replaced my CRTs a while back with a couple of Mag 19" widescreen LCDs and have never looked back. I have yet to find a scenario where I would prefer a 4:3 display, I dont really play older games and the games I have played to date all support the native 1440x900 resolution of my screen.  I will never use a 4:3 again.  I also like the Mag because it has 3 inputs, 1 DVI that goes to my computer and 2x VGA that one of which goes to my Xbox 360.  I plan on trying to find a VGA adapter for my PS2 and hooking it up to my third input! :)

F0dder, I am curious about the comment you made where you felt the 4:3 display is better for coding.  I couldn't disagree more, and I am curious what your reasoning is.

Living Room / Re: How to get data from dead flash drive?
« on: October 30, 2007, 08:31 AM »
I will tell you what I tell all my customers when I find them using a flash drive as primary (and only) storage or as a backup.  DO NOT do that, ever.  Flash drives are wonderful devices, but they serve only ONE purpose:  transport and easy accessibility of data.  They are never ever, EVER to be used for either of the preceding needs for this reason only.  Save the crap to your hard drive, back it up with your normal backup method and use a flash drive to transport it easily.

Oh, and the data is almost guaranteed to be gone forever.  Make sure she understands this lesson and never repeats that mistake.

At home I used Thunderbird, and I find its built in spam filter works VERY well for me.

At work I have to use Outlook 2003 (ugh) but I use Spambayes to keep that under control there, I have been very imporessed with it's performance over the couple of years I have used it.  It also has a "proxy" mode so you can use it with other email clients.
