DC Website Help and Extras / Re: How to linkifice an image?
« on: March 26, 2007, 03:34 AM »
mouser anyone HELP  :tellme:

I think there's a limit of 20 attatchments to a post.

Could that be the case ??!!??

When I go to edit the first post in List of Disc Cataloguers
https://www.donation...64.msg55717#msg55717
I dont get the option to add an attchment (there's already 20)

If so, is there a way around it -
maybe show the screenshot in a new post, then link somehow to that image so it shows in the first post ??
I know you can link to images using URLs but ...

I don't want to make this any/much more complicated than it is

PS am editing jpgs that someone sent me from their scanner. I save that as psp files and then work on them - this does, to a degree cut down on "loss"...

another thing you can do is re-save it as a jpeg (same name or new name as you wish) and make sure its saved at lowest compression.

thanks wyrwolf

sounds good - doesnt require installation

any chance of screenshot showing the search possibilities?
or,
any pros/cons?

from the website:
Function of fast disk's images creation (one click on a disk)
Search of files, disks and folders on a mask, parts of a name, to the comment, type, date or the size.
The auto-description text and mp3 files, an opportunity of addition of comments to disks, files and folders.
The program does not require installation, can be transferred on CD/Flash together with your disc collection.
The debtors of discs account, function of a reminder.
Own database engine (fdb). For work of the program it is not necessary established MS Office or others DBMS.
Tuning of the interface, multilanguage interface support (english, ukrainian, spanish, french, russian) and an opportunity of language modules' addition.

EDIT: added screenshot above

I use No Hands Backup which has the ability to run particular backup jobs when particular media are connected - whether DVDRam or USB key or other removable drives

sounds good iphigenie,
I had a look at their website
http://nhbackup.com/...iew/keyfeatures.html

it's not very informative about how -

does it automatically recognise the particular USB stick you use, (if so do you need a "special" USB stick - with some sort of serial number)*
or,
does it work simply by the drive letter.

My funny old computer sometimes say my USB stick is G, sometimes F, even though i always use the same socket - I think it depends what else is plugged in.
Could it handle that?

*I kinda like the idea of using different sticks for different jobs

I probably got a mail at the time but never read it ..  :-\

PS - Just added the info about flash to first post

General Software Discussion / Xara Xtreme Pro / New(ish) Version
« on: March 22, 2007, 06:35 AM »
I got a mail today about a new version of Xara Xtreme Pro -

I don't think it's that new -
they say: "The retail version has arrived"

Anyways couldn't find any post about it here so this is what's new:

multipage[1].jpg
Flash animations use vector graphics. Unfortunately existing Flash tools have a reputation for being unintuitive, difficult to master and over complex. As a result Flash has been restricted to those willing to dedicate substantial time to mastering these tools. On the other hand, the Xtreme drawing tools have the reputation of being extremely easy to learn and slick. So now we bring the ease of Xtreme to Flash animations.

Xtreme Flash animation doesn't use complex time-lines. Instead it's more like traditional animators art, where you produce snap-shots or key frames of your animations at points in time. Xtreme automatically produces in-between frames to create smooth, really compact Flash animations.

Note: Xtreme Flash animation does not support complex advanced features such as scripting, sound or embedded movies. Instead it's Flash animation for the rest of us.

don't know anything about flash myself, but the PDF export sounds very good  :)

Xtreme Pro now includes class leading PDF support including these features:
•  Choice of PDF version from version 1.3 through to version 1.6, as well as PDF/X-1a 2001, x-1a 2003, X3-2002, and X-3 2003 standards.
•  Full support for vector transparency (PDF version 1.4 or later)
•  Font embedding and font subsetting options
•  Export any selected page range
•  Optional down-sampling of large bitmaps (reduces the size of PDFs for designs containing large photos)
•  Full control over bitmap embedding options and compression (native, Flate, JPEG)
•  Full control over bitmap transparency flattening, bitmap effect rasterization, to any required resolution and compression type
•  Embedding of native JPG files for lossless JPEG transfer
•  Support for Adobe Reader Layers. For PDF 1.5 and above you can now output and control Xtreme's layer visibility in Adobe Reader
•  File embedding. You can embed .xar files into your PDF and launch them from Adobe Reader
•  Full pre-press PDF/X support including:
    •  Embedding page crop and printer's marks
    •  ICC color profiles, including all the common paper stock options (e.g. US Web coated, ISO, etc)
    •  Embedding of custom ICC profiles

•  Document encryption, with full control over document permissions:
    •  Password protect any PDF file, with 40 or 128-bit encryption
    •  Control over exact permissions, e.g. allow / disallow printing or commenting or text copying or extraction.

•  Spot color support

and here's a screenshot of multiple page file.

related bits n pieces:

recent thread from urlwolf how to tag files in winXP

led me indirectly here:
http://idea.zanestat...09/picture-metadata/
about picture metadata.

From the comments there:
I’m the developer of Beagle [search software] and I’m glad to say we do index both EXIF tags and XMP metadata. The XMP data has to be stored in the file, however, and not in a sidecar file.

also led me to microsoft photo info
Microsoft Photo Info is a new software add-in for Microsoft Windows that allows photographers to add, change and delete common "metadata" properties for digital photographs from inside Windows Explorer. It also provides enhanced "hover tips" and additional sort properties for digital photographs in Explorer (in Details view).

mind you, for my purposes I had been hoping they would approach it from the other end, so to say -

that the installed version would automatically recognise a particular usb device when attached
and would then proceed to back up to same device

Version Tracking
Backup4all for U3 is a portable backup software that offers a unique mode to track file versions. You can selectively restore any previous state of the file directly from the main window.
-
don't think even regular backup4all has that (? just got it lately myself so still not sure)

also
Statistics
You can actually see how many files are backed up, the total space allocated for the current backup in the destination, how many files will be added at the next execution, what is the available free space on destination and much more.

Who says the definition of donationware is 'free but donation requested' an equally valid definition could be 'donation required if you use it (however small)'
-Carol Haynes (March 20, 2007, 06:12 AM)

how about this defenition of donationware courtesy Avedesk - (from the readme.txt with AveDesk 1.3)

AveDesk is not freeware, but DONATIONWARE. This means that you are not free to use this application if you wish,
but that you should donate a small amount of money to the AveDesk authors if you like AveDesk and use it frequently.
Donating is not enforced, it's rather a legal trick to make sure no-one runs away with AveDesk for free :-).
why not  :D

From scanning thread again, one advantage of SmartPix -

Smart Pix does read IPTC data, and can write new data to an image also.
-JeffK

11040
SmartPix seems to have tagging as "Keywords"

must go back & reread this thread  :)

when i go there
it says £9.95 (ENGLISH POUNDS)* for Webroot Spy Sweeper which i think equals round €15 (again around $18 ?)

still a big reduction from $30 at their homepage.

* or is this another site that thinks $ = £ or Euros ??

11042
I will pay for exifpro
-JeffK
Jeff
how do exifpro & SmartPix compare?

(have looked at exifpro website, looks good. Will go look at SmartPix now)
thanks for all the info  ;)

Find And Run Robot / Re: not freeware !!!
« on: March 19, 2007, 02:37 AM »
hopefully not off topic, rather sidestepping the semantics:

when i think about this site,*
how well it's run, - &, how well it runs(!)
I'm always very impressed.

also,
when i think about this site,
I gotta think about the amount of money it must cost to keep it up and running
AND
the amount of time people invest in keeping it up and running - and
looking good too  :-*

what more need i say,
i donate when i can - people can donate if you want, not if you don't ...

* "site" meaning software too  :)

If you have a bunch of images in a post
AND
you want to change/update some of them,
do you have to renumber all images (attachthumb=1  etc) so that the last attached image shows as say number 4 out of 9

comprendez? (wouldn't blame ye if ye don't)

I've no problem with you not doing thorough reviews, btw ;)

thanks truckndar   :D

I will be adding details but not putting myself under pressure, so I guess its no harm if you do ...

was experimenting with using minireview template but think it takes up too much space for so many programmes (even cut back to minimal details)

EDIT: was simply going to add comments as I come across them in threads here (or elsewhere)
