Living Room / ANOTHER Lost/Stolen iPhone --- Hmmmm...
« on: May 12, 2010, 09:10 PM »
Yep. Things that make you go hmmmm... I posted a quick blurb on it with links to the original Vietnamese article and an Engadget one.

But another one leaked? Man... I dunno. You'd think that Apple would tighten up or something if it were really that important. Seems to me like they may have leaked it themselves. Dunno. Just speculation.

Living Room / Samsung bada IDE and SDK released
« on: May 06, 2010, 11:02 PM »
I just got the official Samsung announcement, so I can FINALLY start blabbing about a lot of this stuff as it is now public! YEAH~! :D

My quick take on it:

Samsung bada IDE and bada SDK released

The official bada release announcement:

 Official Samsung announcement

I've been waiting for this for quite a while now.

For anyone doing mobile development, you should really check out bada as it's Samsung's new mobile platform going forward. It's going to be massive.

The IDE is Eclipse based and the SDK is for C++, so it's all pretty standard and easy to get up to speed on.

There are a large number of really high-level tools in the SDK to get things done quickly. A few of the cooler ones include:

* SNS (social networking service) -- Twitter, etc.
* LBS (location based services) -- Geolocation and geocoding, etc.
* Web browser control
* Flash control
* Mapping services
* Buddy services
* High-level networking and low-level networking control
* Bluetooth
* Wi-Fi
* Sensor controls (magnetic, GPS, weather, etc.)
* TouchWiz UI controls
* Application control (controlling native device applications from your own software)

Unlike the iPhone, bada is much more open and you don't have Samsung bashing you over the head like Apple does.

There's also a $2,700,000 competition for developers:

 bada Developer Challenge

The grand prize is $300,000 and there are a lot of other prizes as well.

I've already got a good amount of experience with bada, so if anyone has any questions, I can probably help out some.

Living Room / Apple Attacks Adobe
« on: April 13, 2010, 07:53 PM »
Has anyone been paying any attention to the Apple iPhone developer license 3.3.1 issue?

I've already posted a few of my own thoughts at my new blog, Microsoft 2 Apple. (NSFW warning: Contains profanity - no nudity or anything else.)

There's even a Facebook group about it: I'm With Adobe

Any thoughts on it from anyone?

For those not familiar with it already, Apple has restricted all iPhone development to Objective-C, C, and C++ (written/compiled in Xcode) (with some other allowances for HTML5 and JavaScript that have strict limitations). They are torpedoing a whole whack of technologies that people use for iPhone development:

  • Flash
  • MonoTouch
  • Unity3D
  • Lua
  • ...and others...

The general reaction so far is pretty vicious against Apple.

Novell (makers of MonoTouch) have been very diplomatic saying that they are asking for "clarifications", or in other words, they're looking to see if Apple wants to screw everyone, or just Adobe.

Thoughts?

Living Room / Legal Insanity
« on: November 09, 2009, 08:35 PM »
So I'm down at the British Embassy pub chatting with some people, and a fellow I know relates a story a friend of his...

Buddy drives up to a red light and stops. (This is where the trouble begins...)

Happily waiting for the light to change, he doesn't notice a speeding bus behind him that fully plans on running the red light...

Luckily (or unluckily as the case may be), the passenger-packed bus slams on the brakes to avoid hitting him. However, in doing so, the many passengers all fly forward with the sudden stop, with many of them being injured to one degree or another.

Blissfully unaware of the happenings behind him, he proceeds to drive on when the light turns green...

Fast forward a couple weeks, and buddy gets a fine for KRW 2,000,000 (close to USD 2,000, and almost exactly AUD 2,000) for dangerous driving BECAUSE HE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT WHILE THE BUS FULLY PLANNED ON ILLEGALLY RUNNING THE RED LIGHT BUT STOPPED AND IN THE PROCESS, INJURED PEOPLE.

WTF? Huh? :S

Now... just think about THAT the next time you stop for a red light in Korea. ;)

Anyone else got any true 'legal insanity' stories from their neighbourhood?

Living Room / I'm Going to HELL! Please feel sorry for me... :(
« on: November 09, 2009, 11:28 AM »
Well, it's been a while since I posted. Been lurking though...

But I'm headed for HELL! Pure, utter, total, DAMNATION~!

I've been sentenced to 3 years in Australia...

That means that I have no more "slow" internet speed at 10 Mbps with unlimited bandwidth for less than $30 USD... (Yep... that's the slow one where I live now... but only for another couple days...)

Now I'm facing the infernal dark flames of Australian primitive Internet infrastructure  :stars: with prices 5x what I pay now for half of what I'm getting now...

I wanna cry~!

Right now I need a virtual shoulder to cry virtual tears on and cry virtual wave files~!

What did I do to deserve this???

It looks pretty good. They seem to have a decent idea on isolated tabs. I'm installing it now, but the installer seems like the Adobe Reader one... Yuck.

They've ripped off Opera's "Speed Dial", which is good. Speed Dial rocks.

We'll see though. I'll be using it for a bit to check it out.

Renegade Minds' "Guitar & Drum Trainer" software for musicians won for the third time at the annual Shareware Industry Awards Banquest hosted at the Software Industry Conference in Boston. "GDT" is a specialized program to help musicians of all levels learn new songs quickly and easily by slowing down music, pitch shifting songs, and removing vocals or instruments.
-Executive Summary

GDT4-Main-The-Way-Music-Loops.png

Boston, Massachusetts, July 2008 -- Renegade Minds' "Guitar & Drum Trainer" software for musicians won the "Best Vertical Market Program or Utility Award" at the Shareware Industry Awards Banquet on July 19th. Guitar & Drum Trainer helps musicians of all levels learn new music easier and faster, and runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista.

The Shareware Industry Awards are presented during the annual Shareware Industry Awards Banquet held at the conclusion of the Software Industry Conference. They honor the best software titles in a variety of categories, with nominees and winners chosen by industry professionals and experts from around the world. Past winners include titles popular enough to be household words such as Microsoft Office 2007, Firefox, Google Earth and WinZip, to lesser known programs that are popular in their niches.

Nominated for the awards in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, Guitar & Drum Trainer won in 2005 and 2006, and again this year in the "Best Vertical Market Program or Utility Award" category. Ryan Smyth from Renegade Minds was not present to accept the award at the ceremony, but in a blog post expressed his regret at not being able to attend saying that air tickets from South Korea were mostly booked and other commitments prevented his attendance this year.

Guitar & Drum Trainer, or simply "GDT", is specialized software for musicians to learn new music faster and easier. It allows musicians to slow down music, pitch shift songs to the tunings of their instruments, loop riffs and musical passages, and remove vocals or instruments from songs. Despite its namesake, the software works with any instrument, and not only guitars and drums.

The software includes tools and features specifically designed for musicians. Rather than a standard ISO equalizer, GDT centers its 62 equalizer bands on musical notes, and instead of a regular slider for seeking through music, it includes a full and a zoomed waveform display.

Major new features in version 4 of the software include vocal and instrument removal tools as well as the ability to save slowed down and pitch shifted songs as FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) files or MP3s with an additional LAME MP3 encoder download. Other new additions include CD playback, an improved 62-band stereo equalizer and beat detection.

Guitar & Drum Trainer has a free trial for musicians to download and evaluate before they decide to purchase and is available for USD 49.95.

So I go to read an eBook that I PURCHASED a while ago in PDF format... Grrr...

I've been able to open it in the past (of course) but get directed here:

http://www.adobe.com...ons/?source=acrofile

They want me to download and install and activate things again!

And what if I'm not connected to the Internet? Like on my laptop out somewhere?

Geez... I don't know if this is just me, but I really hate being forced to jump through hoops to do simple stuff like open a file that I've already paid for. I can walk to my shelf and open a book without this hassle.

Really makes me want to rethink buying any more of Adobe's "Digital Editions."

Grrr... Grumble...

Ok. I'm done. :)

Living Room / Drinking Vinegar?
« on: June 01, 2008, 12:57 AM »
This is VERY off-topic for software, but I'm curious...

How many people here have heard of or tried "drinking vinegar?"

It's exactly that -- vinegar that's meant for drinking. Comes in different flavors, and it's absolutely FANTASTIC!

Think of "drinking yoghurt," but for vinegar. (Drinking yoghurt is available in North America and Europe, right?)

Yet more depressing oppression...

City Council Spying on People:
http://news.bbc.co.u...d/dorset/7341179.stm

A council has admitted spying on a family using laws to track criminals and terrorists to find out if they were really living in a school catchment.

Council Defending Themselves:
http://news.bbc.co.u...ducation/7342281.stm

This whole Big Brother thing is getting far too close to reality now.

And it gets worse:

http://www.guardian....5/computing.security

Last month a US court ruled that border agents can search your laptop, or any other electronic device, when you're entering the country. They can take your computer and download its entire contents, or keep it for several days. Customs and Border Patrol has not published any rules regarding this practice, and I and others have written a letter to Congress urging it to investigate and regulate this practice.

But the US is not alone. British customs agents search laptops for pornography. And there are reports on the internet of this sort of thing happening at other borders, too. You might not like it, but it's a fact.

I just don't know what to say... Rant. Rant. Rant. It's the same stripping of freedoms and treating people like criminals that's been gaining momentum since the 80's when the "terrorism" buzzword first started to gain popularity.

Renegade Minds happily announces the release of Guitar & Drum Trainer v4 Open Beta 1. GDT lets musicians slow down music, pitch shift music, loop music segments, and even filter out instruments with a 62 band stereo EQ and an advanced karaoke mode to filter center or non-center panned audio.

GDTv4-Open-Beta-1-Main.png

New in GDT v4, advanced karaoke functions let musicians filter out center panned or non-center panned audio. Combined with a powerful 62 band stereo equalizer (31 bands for left and 31 bands for right), removing different frequencies from any audio file is possible. The best results come from adjusting only 1 of the left or right EQ.

CHANNEL MIXER & KARAOKE:

GDTv4-Open-Beta-1-Vocal-Removal-Karaoke.png

STEREO EQUALIZER:

GDTv4-Open-Beta-1-EQ.png

Also new in GDT is an audio encoder to save slowed down music and pitch shifted music for later playback in other audio software or on hardware MP3 players. The default saves to the FLAC lossless audio format, but people can expand the functionality by copying LAME.exe to the GDT program files folder.

SPEED & PITCH ENCODER:

GDTv4-Open-Beta-1-Save-Slowed-Down-Music.png

New added beat detection can also be displayed on waveforms in GDT for help in setting loops, or simply for visual reference while playing along with music.

BEAT DETECTION:

Other improvements and enhancements to GDT are also in the new version.

Guitar & Drum Trainer v4 offers a free 15 day trial for musicians to evaluate, and can be downloaded here.

Living Room / BEAT THIS! ;)
« on: April 06, 2008, 05:03 PM »
I just got back from a quick visit with my aunt and uncle in Hong Kong and the whole time there, I only checked my email 1x per day in the morning!

Impressive, eh?

Other than that, my only computer usage was showing my aunt and uncle a few things.

So my fellow digital junkies, how d'ya think you'd fare? Email anxiety after 30 minutes? 1 hour? ;)

But then again, I get home and the first thing I do is turn on the computer... I'm totally hopeless in the long run! :D

« on: March 30, 2008, 06:49 AM »
Ok, so I'm going through the ASP NGs when I see this post in a thread that I'm reading and I take a double-take.

NO_SPAMsupport@veig...

The from column cuts off the rest, but I think to myself, "Sounds familiar..." At the end I read a name I recognize, then come back here to check. Sure as guns, it's Veign.

So, is anyone else in the ASP here or post in any of their public forums?

Just curious. It's a small world.

@Veign, I'll likely contact you in a few months about your PAD post there. ;)

Cheers!

Living Room / Made the JUMP! --- X-STATIC About it!
« on: March 28, 2008, 11:20 AM »
I finished my last day at the dayjob today. (Today for most of you, yesterday for me -- had to have a few drinks to celebrate!).

I'm beyond thrilled now as I'll have time to really focus on things for myself.

(For those that don't know, the "jump" is going from working for someone else, to working for yourself.)

My own mISV is profitable and I certainly don't need to go out to get a job again if I don't want to. (I may if I get bored, but I don't see that happening. Although I already have a few companies chasing after me.)

Things will be hectic for the first month while I sort a few things out, but I'll be right on track in no time.

It hasn't hit me yet though. I still don't really "taste" it and it isn't very real. I think that I need that first month of things to hit me hard in the face that when I get up in the morning: the "office" is 2m away from me.

I'll post back when the dust clears! :)

« on: March 26, 2008, 09:56 AM »
Ok, so, this is a long story, but I'll post in a few days for the background and some other stuff, but for now...

I've been training someone in some SEO and software promotion techniques. I whipped up a quick installer for the "Day Adder" and we used it as an example to walk through things.

So, anyways, the "Day Adder" is a simple program to add a number of days and get a date. Free and licensed under the WTFPL. :)

Sanctuary

While I hate to admit it, my main movie & TV connection (other than the theater), is a collection of video sites.

I simply CANNOT buy anything because I don't live in the US, and some people *cough*studios*cough* are too stupid to take my money when I want to give it to them.

Well, Sanctuary is available for $8.75 in HD! ($6.99 in SD) (That's for a 4 episode bundle. $2.49 and $1.99 each otherwise, HD/SD respectively.)

And... Get this...

You ready???

I'm gonna blow your mind...

This is INCREDIBLE!!!

You sure you want to find out?

I can't be held responsible for possible brain damage or trauma!!!

This is your last warning!!!

THEY TOOK MY MONEY!!!

Miracle of miracles! Somebody out there understands that actually selling their product is a good thing and can help them make money!!!

WOW!

I'm totally beyond belief shocked! I was fully expecting to NOT be able to buy!

I was about to download an episode here, when I saw this:

Sanctuary is an independant webseries.
Please, support them and buy some webisodes on the official website: http://sanctuaryforall.com/.

The "independant" part there peaked my interest, and I figured that if the major studios aren't involved, there would be a slim chance that it wasn't run by complete morons! Imagine my surprise!!! They're NOT morons!

I am SOOOOO hoping that this catches on, because it's a much better way to get stuff.

Ok... Maybe I got a little over-excited there, but this is really a great thing! (Being able to buy without geographic restrictions.)

Anyways, just bought eps 1~4. I'll get 5~8 next! :D
