Developer's Corner / Downloading Eclipse... ...noisufnoC
« on: November 14, 2010, 04:28 AM »
Sigh...

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

Eclipse IDE for Java Developers, 99 MB
Eclipse Classic 3.6.1, 170 MB
Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers, 206 MB
Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers, 88 MB
Eclipse for PHP Developers, 141 MB
Eclipse IDE for JavaScript Web Developers, 108 MB
Eclipse Modeling Tools (includes Incubating components), 249 MB
Eclipse IDE for Java and Report Developers, 241 MB
Eclipse for RCP and RAP Developers, 188 MB
Pulsar for Mobile Developers, 122 MB
Eclipse SOA Platform for Java and SOA Developers (includes Incubating components), 188 MB

And then there's 32 and 64 bit for each... And then there are different versions... And different SDKs require different versions of Eclipse... But don't tell you which 1 of the above is the right version of Eclipse... And then the product comparison matrix doesn't help you... And then...

Really... Like WTF? Isn't Eclipse the most confusing thing? Even just trying to download it is confusing. Like which one do you want/need?

Is it just me?

And yeah... Installing a new SDK that requires god knows what...

Google cache for "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure [Kindle Edition]":

http://webcache.goog...amp;client=firefox-a

Product Description
This is my attempt to make pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them, by establishing certian rules for these adults to follow. I hope to achieve this by appealing to the better nature of pedosexuals, with hope that their doing so will result in less hatred and perhaps liter sentences should they ever be caught.

Stunned. Just stunned.

A book about raping children...

The underlying issue is self-publication and freedom of speech.

Living Room / Too Stupid to Own a Computer
« on: November 10, 2010, 09:14 PM »
This is sad, but true, and completely hiliarious:

http://www.net-secur...are_news.php?id=1524

The couple are said to have tricked the composer into believing that, while investigating the virus, they had found evidence that his life was in danger – concocting a story that the virus had been tracked to a hard drive in Honduras, and that evidence had been found that the composer's life was in danger.

And they took him for $6,000,000.

Some people really are too stupid and should never own a computer...

Living Room / Getting an HTC Desire HD -- Android Phone
« on: November 10, 2010, 07:50 AM »
Well, I've decided on getting an Android phone. It was tough to come to that conclusion. Here's a bit of my reasoning.

* iOS - My wife has an iPhone, so I can use that for iPhone development. Rules out iOS phones.
* Windows 7 - While Windows 7 looks promising, and I love .NET and know they support it, there's not enough devices for it out there. (I plan to develop for whatever platform I buy.)
* Symbian - Symbian? Huh? No. I do not smoke crack nor am I mentally handicapped.
* bada - The Samsung Wave - a bada phone... Man... I would LOVE to get one. I know the bada platform inside out, and it ROCKS! (I have done a lot of work for Samsung on the platform.) Sigh... I know too much and can't wait for bada 1.2 to come out. But I need a phone now... (The possibilities in bada are phenomenal.)
* Palm - Like Symbian, I was not dropped on my head repeatedly as an infant.
* webOS - What OS?
* Blackberry - I'm not really interested in them. Meh. That's it.
* What else is there?
* Android - This is the only truly viable platform at the moment. bada will be an up and comer, while Windows 7 will make inroads as well.

So the HTC Desire HD is now available in Australia, and is pretty much the slickest phone out there. It's got specs that will last for a while, and that gives me a few years to work with it. The screen still isn't as good as the iPhone 4 screen, but it's better than others.

Now, is anyone else using Android out there? I'd like to hear what things people like or don't like about it.

Having looked at different phones, if I were to pick one simply out of UI and beauty, it would come down to the Samsung Galaxy S or the Samsung Wave or the HTC Desire HD. (I've currently got a severely allergic reaction to iOS.)

I plan on going to pick it up today/tomorrow (depending on your time zone).

Any last words of caution, encouragement or whatever? :)

Is there a way to extend this: https://www.donation...n=unread;all;start=0

i.e. To have more there?

Or is there an aggregated forum with all topics from all forums?

I just don't see it right now.

Worth it? Not sure. I really haven't used any Explorer replacements since PowerDesk 4 about 10 years ago. Just haven't seemed to be able to get into them. Is this one good enough and does it have a nice enough flow?

Living Room / Maybe I Should Build Airplanes Too!
« on: November 04, 2010, 12:06 AM »
If you remember my Qantas air ticket reservation system, please have a look here too:

http://news.ninemsn....y-after-air-incident

A Qantas A380 passenger jet has landed safely in Singapore after a "mechanical issue" caused part of the engine to fall to the ground.

Perhaps I should get into building airplanes as well. Hey, if I can replicate Qantas booking systems in 5 minutes, I should be able to build them some planes in 10~! :P

Glad I'm flying with Singapore Air~! :D

Living Room / Violence in Video Games & the Law
« on: November 03, 2010, 02:54 AM »
From:

http://news.cnet.com...html?tag=topStories1

The California law slaps anyone who sells or rents a "violent video game" to a minor with a $1,000 fine. That's defined as a game in which the player has the option of "killing, maiming, dismembering, or sexually assaulting an image of a human being" in offensive ways. Parents or guardians are still permitted to buy those games for minors.

...

The pro-regulation states also cite Postal 2, saying that the game encourages players to "burn people alive with gasoline or napalm," "decapitate people with shovels and have dogs fetch their severed heads," and "kill bald, unshaven men wearing pink dresses."

California attorney general and gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown, a Democrat, has said the state should be able to place "reasonable restrictions on the distribution of extremely violent material to children."

...

Which is why groups as diverse as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the Future of Music Coalition are siding with the video game industry. The coalition warns that if the California law is upheld, it "would lead inexorably to the enactment of new statutes prohibiting violent depictions or descriptions in other artistic media" as well.

...

And it was Justice Sonia Sotomayor who seemed to be the most conversant with video games, asking whether a video game showing a Vulcan "being maimed and tortured" would be covered by the act (answer: no) and whether an "android computer simulated person" would be covered by the act (answer: no). Justice Antonin Scalia was sharply critical of the law, but on more traditional grounds: saying that "it has never been understood that the freedom of speech did not include portrayals of violence."

No matter how you look at it, this is a real political mess. There's no winning here.

Still, it will be interesting... whether or not it's a bloodbath~! :D

Living Room / Snail Videos
« on: November 02, 2010, 02:30 AM »
Found some interesting videos of snails. Yep. Snails. Cone snails actually.

Forget about your garden variety snail, these things are sinister, creepy, and deadly.

http://www.theconesnail.com/videos

Some of those videos are sure to creep you out.

One variety has enough venom in it to kill 15 people in 1 sting. Unsurprisingly, it's from Australia.

It's a video review.

Summary: Looks good. Massive leap forward for Windows Mobile. If you buy one, we're not going to call you an idiot. Very promising.

http://www.telegraph...blisher-for-20m.html

But this latest deal will not actually include the intellectual property rights to Angry Birds – those will remain with Rovio, the Finnish company that created and developed the game.

Seems odd that they'd not want that as well.

Living Room / "White" Magic
« on: October 21, 2010, 08:38 PM »
http://www.telegraph...or-magic-spells.html

...Mr Zarza Manresa had been "shaved completely by Ibrahim (a rebel leader) who believes in magical fetishes made with hair and body hair of whites".

Gunmen from Congo's plethora of rebel and pro-government armed groups often adorn themselves with trinkets or traditional garments before heading into battle, in the belief that they will protect them from the bullets of the enemy.

Some believe wearing fetishes will turn bullets into water.

Living Room / Welcome to Hell... iHell that is...
« on: October 20, 2010, 07:40 PM »
Well, the final **** is in as Jobs f**ks the desktop.

So, there's going to be an iStore for iDiots now. Nice. How long until that douche locks out all software that isn't sold through his store? It's coming.

Macs will soon have an online application store, similar to the one for the iPhone and iPad...

...the Mac store will make it easier to reach the almost 50 million Mac owners, Jobs said

Is it possible to be full of more shit than that?

200,000 software titles and the user is exposed to 25??? Yeah. That's "easy to reach". Jobs is a disingenuous f**ktard.

Living Room / The Monitor is a Limiting Form Factor
« on: October 20, 2010, 09:33 AM »
Ok, I'm sick of BS claims by semi-retarded journalists. I felt like destroying one BS claim: "the desktop is dead".

I've just written up why the desktop will never die.

I take a rational approach and explain why the media whores are complete morons.

My general approach is to explain types then go for specifics.

I identify 7 types of computing then classify then into 2 types then go from there.

I conclude with the monitor being a limiting form factor.

Last year I interviewed for a TV job, and they asked me if I had ever directed or shot car chases.  I said yes, went home, shot this, and sent it back to them.
I didn't get the job.

Living Room / How much soda (pop) do you drink?
« on: October 10, 2010, 03:20 AM »
Looks like New York is pushing to ban the use of food stamps for soda pop. Article #2

The issue is so hot/bad that Pepsi is giving away 10 million cans of a new less-toxic drink. Article #2

The issue largely revolves around high fructose corn syrup.

This video actually gives you REAL science to back up claims, and not just some namby-pamby soft claims and BS like you usually get. (Very refreshing!)

I recommend watching that video very highly. I cannot stress enough just how insightful it is, and how good the information is. Most often you get some wishy-washy BS with no hard science and no real information. This guy is hard core and doesn't dumb things down. He has actual information and explains it intelligently. That being said, put your thinking cap on as it will challenge you unless you are well educated in biochemistry.

I hang out in some other forums and the topic came up here. (I can most certainly say that the quality of posting here is infinitely higher. DC is a much better place for discussion by light years. Thoughtfulness in posts, courtesy, etc.)

Anyways, I rarely drink soda and try very hard to eliminate most sugar from my diet with the exception of sugar in fresh food like oranges, melons, carrots, etc.

My "soda" is actually drinking vinegar (I mentioned it a long time ago here) in sparkling mineral water. (I just ran out and need to buy more, but it's kind of hard to find and there's only 1 Korean store here that I've found that has it.)

Anyways, just wondering about people here. How much do you drink?

Also, I wanted to use the poll to suck people in and find out what people think about banning the use of food stamps for soda. Good? Bad? Ugly? Non-issue? Not far enough?

Fire away!

Living Room / 100 Wives...
« on: October 07, 2010, 09:08 PM »
Hmmm...

100 widows...

Kenya's most prominent polygamist has died having married more than 100 women in his lifetime and fathered nearly 200 children. Nicknamed "Danger" because women were so attracted by his handsome looks, Ancentus Akuku was in his late 90's when he passed away of natural causes.

Akuku Danger was legendary in Kenya. He married his first wife in 1939 and became polygamist some 70 years ago at the age of 22. He's outlived 12 of his wives, marrying the last one in 1992. There were so many children in his family that Akuku established two elementary schools solely to educate his children, as well as a church for his growing family to attend.

In past interviews Akuku told local journalists he was responsible for naming all of his children, as way to bond with them.

Naming a kid is bonding? Wow. And you thought your dad didn't pay enough attention to you! :P

Living Room / The Story of Stuff - Cosmetics, Bottled Water...
« on: September 16, 2010, 02:53 AM »
STOP whatever you're doing now and relax a bit with an amazingly entertaining and very educational little video:

THE STORY OF STUFF: BOTTLED WATER

There are more there.

Really -- great stuff!

The cosmetics one is excellent. I've already switched to minimizing the number of toxic products I use. My toothpaste can be eaten. Yes. Unlike other toothpastes that recommend you go to a poison control center (hospital), I can eat my toothpaste. And it's nutritious and good for you!

Cap & Trade - Again, excellent.

It's all done extremely well. (Even if it uses Flash. :) )

...

Now, back to my cynical, ranting self... :)

That kind of stuff is why I simply refuse to give a s**t about anything anymore. There is no hope...

I refuse to put in any more than the absolute minimum amount of effort to recycle. It's moronic. Most materials end up in dumps anyways. Most "recyclables" cost MORE energy to recycle than they save. The ONLY exception is tin cans (metal in general). I'll recycle if it takes zero effort on my part, or if it is actually more convenient to do so, but I'm NOT going to turn my brain off and follow a mindless crowd.

The 3 R's are:

REDUCE
Reuse
recycle

They're in that order for a reason. I'll do the first 2, but not the 3rd.

And... More ranting...

I'm SICK of being preached at by a bunch of hypocrites. Don't want the sermon. Don't need the sermon. No longer care.

Then again, I just have general problems with being told what to do by fools. I have no problems taking advice/orders/whatever from people that truly know what they are talking about AND have the right motivations (a rare combination).
