Sigh... I don't know why I always have to find so many stupid annoyances... Anyways, I'm posting this here in the hopes that it helps someone else avoid wasting time and a little pain:

Copying Collapsed Rows/Columns in Excel Excludes Hidden Data

The title basically says it all.

So, if you copy 51 rows, but only get 50 pasted, you now know why. :D

Living Room / Miss America Hates Wikileaks, Might Be An Idiot =D
« on: January 16, 2011, 07:30 PM »
http://www.mediabist...t-be-an-idiot_b20669

You know, when it came to that situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation we have to focus on security first, and then people’s right to know. Because it’s so important that everyone in our borders is safe, and so we can’t let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly, and I think that was the case.

MIGHT? Bwahahahah~!

User comments:

Just an airhead talking to an airhead demographic audience.

Why are so many pretty and talented people who are filled with ambition, such complete moral midgets.

It can't be a coincidence.

God help us all

I loved the movie, and now the game is $5 at Steam this weekend.

http://store.steampo...4878/?snr=1_4_4__109

I don't play many games (despite a great deal of my income coming from the gaming industry), and don't plan to buy it, but thought I'd pass it on in case anyone else wants to buy a copy.

Living Room / What Do You Think About ANONYMOUS?
« on: January 15, 2011, 08:28 AM »
I'm curious about how others view Anonymousw.

http://www.whyweprotest.net/en/

Stand for freedom. Stand with Anonymous
To tyrants, the downtrodden are nameless.

Since its inception, the internet has provided new ways for people all over the world to exercise the rights of free speech, freedom of the press and freedom of assembly. These rights are not simply the benefits of a free society--they are the very means of preserving that society's freedom. The recent increase in government interference with these freedoms coincides with the failure of the corporate media to fulfill their vital role in checking the abuse of authority. Censorship and journalistic abdication have left citizens unaware and unable to hold their governments accountable.

WikiLeaks has moved to fill the void left by traditional news media, providing the necessary information for citizens to hold their governments to account. Yet it has not been granted the legal protections generally afforded to journalists. Instead, the organization has been vilified and monetary support has been blocked by governments and private corporations. The vitriol aimed at WikiLeaks demonstrates an unsettling disregard for the fundamental freedom to exchange information and express ideas. Members of a free society must not allow information to be suppressed simply because it inconveniences those in power. We share the responsibility to defend vital liberties. The time to act is now.

We are Anonymous, a leaderless movement that has worked tirelessly to oppose all forms of Internet censorship worldwide, from DMCA abuses to government mandated content filters. Our initiatives include supporting dissenting groups in Iran, Zimbabwe and Tunisia, as well as waging the highly visible information battle against the Church of Scientology. We are now prepared to take the fight to the world stage. Join us on January 15th for the first in a series of global protests in defense of WikiLeaks and freedom of expression. Stand with us to defend your freedoms.

We Are Anonymous And So Are You

I've got to say, I like that they are building awareness.

Developer's Corner / C# & Visual Studio Problem
« on: January 15, 2011, 05:20 AM »
Sigh... Yes... I've searched... And I can't find the answer... This is bizarre. (I bet $10 somebody will find the answer real easy now...)

Anyways, check this screenshot:

Screenshot - 2011-01-15 , 10_06_25 PM.png

My problem is that all of a sudden, I can't "mouse over" to find variable values when debugging.

You can see in there that "comparisons" has values in it, however, "singleComparison" shows "...does not exist in the current context." Huh? It's populating "comparisons", so it obviously has values in it, but...

Similarly, pi1, pi2 and pis won't show any values there. They don't exist~! But they do~!

See how bizarre this is?

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Yikes... Feel like another horror story? Got 2 horror stories for you here...

First horror story is about aspartame and how dangerous it is.

http://www.online-do...artame-sweet-misery/

I think I'll stick with sugar... (Yeah... I'm still limiting that to almost none.)

Still, I had to have a look, so I checked here:

Aspartame Controversyw

Interestingly enough, there is more than 1 edit per day there. Having a look at older ones, and at the current one, it's blatantly obvious that the current version is a highly sanitized "controversy" with no real controversy. All anti-aspartame information has been removed or dismissed off-hand.

This is an anti-aspartame site that looks interesting:

http://dorway.com/

Second horror story is about Wikipedia:

But it all got me to thinking about Wikipedia... It really looks like Wikipedia is suffering some pretty serious abuse there. Like, if there's a controversy, shouldn't there be something about the controversy there, and not something that entirely dismisses the controversy?

It's obvious that there is a serious problem there. Wikipedia is being used to push an agenda. That's not information. It's propaganda.

Now, it's not Wikipedia's fault, and I'm most certainly NOT blaming Wikipedia. I DO want to point out that there is something happening there that doesn't seem to be above board.

But it seems to me that this will be a very real problem in the future as those with cash on hand can pay to get their message up there much easier than a community can likely respond.

I'm all for free speech and whatnot, but I'm also very much for honesty, integrity, and responsibility.

Living Room / R.I.P. MySpace
« on: January 12, 2011, 03:20 AM »
http://www.sfgate.co...F11%2FBU591H7E1Q.DTL

MySpace Inc. said Tuesday that the company has fired 47 percent of its workforce - about 500 employees - as the deposed social-networking king continues trying to mount a comeback as an online entertainment hub.

Facebook has taken over. That was MySpace's second round of reductions.

I've written more than I could possibly hope to count. Custom web log analytic software, text utilities, web scraping software, a Flickr uploader... More than I care to list.

It's a thing though. I need to do a task, so I write a program to do it.

Anyone else?

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / NANY 2011 - press release discussion
« on: January 10, 2011, 08:49 AM »
Please help us get out the word about the NANY2011 wrap up!  Especially to other sites that have readers who might care.

The best url to use when telling people about it is: https://www.donationcoder.com/nany2011

And the best thing you could do is just tell them in your own words why it's a cool thing they might want to tell people about.

Have you done a press release? PRWeb has some for free still I believe. (Not my place to do that -- I think Perry would be best to compile/write info as he's most involved, but you might want to get someone else experienced to edit and then get a proof -- press releases are tough to do well.)

FB'd it. Will do more though. :)

A fellow I work with is not very techno-savvy, and needs to collapse multiple columns in Excel into a single value.

I wrote a little utility to let him copy columns from Excel, paste into the utility, then copy back into a single column in Excel.

UTILITY (Tab Cleaner):
Screenshot - 2011-01-10 , 4_41_40 PM.png

DOWNLOAD:
* TabToSpaceCleaner.exe (159.5 kB - downloaded 535 times.)

PURPOSE:
Combine multiple columns (and rows) into a single column.

USAGE:
1) Copy columns (and rows) from MS Excel
2) Click first "PASTE" text box in the program
3) In Excel, double click a cell to deselect
4) Select a cell to paste new value(s)
5) Click second "COPY" text box in the program
6) In Excel, paste the value(s)
7) Done.

To change the separator, change the value in the "Tab Cleaner Text" box, e.g. change " - " to " " or ", " or whatever suits your purpose.

Here's an example showing columns I, J, and combined into column L:

Screenshot - 2011-01-10 , 3_55_07 PM.png

While I'm sure few people here would need it, I'm guessing that someone will find a use.

EDIT (forgot the requirements):

REQUIREMENTS:
Microsoft Windows 2000 or higher
.NET 2.0

At the moment I'm getting a Youtube privacy error for all the ones I tried to view (except my own):

Living Room / iPhone Alarms Don't Work
« on: January 03, 2011, 06:08 AM »
This is just funny. Apple can't manage to get their alarms working.

Apple Late to the Party with Broken Alarms

But the reality of the situation is that it's not a bug in the iPhone/iOS. It's a bug in the rest of the Universe. Steve told me so.

People missed New Year's, church, late for work... It's not like an alarm clock is rocket science. BSD (the underpinnings of OS X and iOS) has a clock that works.

Baffling...

Must be a bug in the fabric of reality...

Living Room / Microsoft2Apple - Keyword Searches (NSFW)
« on: January 02, 2011, 05:44 AM »
I got an email from Wordpress telling me some stats for one of my sites for the year. I got a laugh when I read the list of most popular keywords (in order I presume):

* apple is an evil evil company
* steve jobs is a cunt
* bada 1.2
* bada flash
* finder hangs

Hahaha~!

It gave me a laugh anyways. :)

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / iDeparted - For when you die.
« on: December 31, 2010, 11:15 PM »
iDeparted is a friend of mine's new project and it's just officially launched today~!

https://www.ideparted.com/

Screenshot - 2011-01-01 , 4_12_41 PM.png

It's for you to keep all your passwords and accounts safe online in the event of your death, so that they can be passed on to your executor or whoever.

A friend of mine died prematurely and unexpectedly a little over a year ago, and this would have solved a LOT of problems for his wife.

It's something that I know everyone could use.

Living Room / Holy Pirates~! =p
« on: December 31, 2010, 08:26 AM »
I found this humorous. 2 pirates in the Vatican:

AVAST Software: Over 770,000 pirates plus 2 in the Vatican

http://www.avast.com...nt=en-au_online_news

What started as a 14-user license for a small firm in Tucson, Arizona issued on June 30, 2009 quickly mushroomed to 774,651 active users by late 2010. The license has been used in over 200 countries ranging from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe – even the Vatican City. Phenomenal growth yes, but except for the original 14 users, all of the others are pirates.

Developer's Corner / Any EASY Windows Forms Skin Kits for C#?
« on: December 31, 2010, 04:09 AM »
I'm a tad sick of Windows Forms. Does anyone know any good skinning kits that are easy to work with? I looked at wxWidgets before a long time ago and it looked like pure hell.

I basically just want stuff to make software look nicer with minimal effort. I'd rather do functional programming than GUI programming.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Web Badges
« on: December 31, 2010, 03:42 AM »
2010 had some nice web badges here:

I've redone one of them for 2011 here:

I'd looked around and not seen any for 2011, and they looked so good. Did I miss them? (And no -- they didn't turn up in a search. ;) )

Living Room / Are You Ready to Switch to GNU/Linux?
« on: December 30, 2010, 12:11 AM »
Saw an article:

How You Know When It’s Time to Switch to Linux

If you're considering giving Windows the boot here are 10 signs the time is right to give Linux a try.

Source

And thought I'd post it before Zane. :D

Just kidding.

But the stuff in the article is more candy-floss BS.

1. You’re Tired of Paying for Software
2. You’re Tired of Upgrading Hardware
3. You’re Tired of Malware
4. You’ve Seen One Too Many Patch Tuesdays
5. You Don’t Have the Time
6. You Like Speed
7. You Like Sharing
8. You Don’t Actually Love Internet Explorer
9. You Want to Be in Control
10. You’re One of a Kind

Sigh...

So, the rant is here. :D

Well, not really a rant. Or not much of one.

The long & short of it: I hate dumb lists by bored tech writers. The presumptuous question is "are you ready", along with some questions to ask.

Now, for a non-idiotic approach to the question…

ARE YOU READY TO SWITCH TO GNU/LINUX?

This is crucially important. But you can answer this question with a little thought and reflection.

First, take inventory of the different tasks that you do and the programs that you use to do it. Next, look for replacements for them that run on GNU/Linux. Next, and this is the hard part, verify that the replacements work for your purposes. An example will help…

Pretty much the only REASON to switch seems to be "freedom". I can't think of another legitimate reason that isn't blatantly controversial.

Living Room / 150 Hours of TV / Month?
« on: December 29, 2010, 10:26 AM »
Looking into Google TV ads:

With the average American watching over 150 hours of television per month...

Wow. I'm stunned. That's basically a solid week with no breaks.

Living Room / Dreamy Monitor...
« on: December 29, 2010, 12:54 AM »
I need a new monitor as my portrait one died. I've decided on a Samsung BX2440, but then I saw this:

http://www.samsung.c...etail&returnurl=

Oh god oh god oh god oh god~! I want 1. Errr... Make that 2! Give me 180 degree monitors~!    :D

It doesn't have portrait mode, but I'd forgive that small omission. :P

But at $4k... Ummm... I'll go with the BX2440 for now. :)

Developer's Corner / C# Image Orientation Gotcha
« on: December 24, 2010, 08:48 AM »
I just posted a C# EXIF image orientation gotcha here.

The long & short of it is that you cannot dispose of an image and you must leave the file handle open (locked) in order to get at the metadata, and specifically, the EXIF 274 (0x112) image orientation data. If you clone or copy the image, the image orientation data will not be available.

Hope that helps someone. Took me a while to figure out what was going on.

Living Room / Monty Python is Simply Uber-Cool
« on: December 23, 2010, 09:50 AM »
From the Monty Python YouTube page:

For 3 years you YouTubers have been ripping us off, taking tens of thousands of our videos and putting them on YouTube. Now the tables are turned. It's time for us to take matters into our own hands.

We know who you are, we know where you live and we could come after you in ways too horrible to tell. But being the extraordinarily nice chaps we are, we've figured a better way to get our own back: We've launched our own Monty Python channel on YouTube.

No more of those crap quality videos you've been posting. We're giving you the real thing - HQ videos delivered straight from our vault.

What's more, we're taking our most viewed clips and uploading brand new HQ versions. And what's even more, we're letting you see absolutely everything for free. So there!

But we want something in return.

None of your driveling, mindless comments. Instead, we want you to click on the links, buy our movies & TV shows and soften our pain and disgust at being ripped off all these years.

Simply brilliant.

(Just bought the complete Flying Circus recently.)
