Just went a bit deeper.
Seems the app does not have rights to create directories.
Once the directories are in place, creating the files is no issue.
So, that way, I got it to run.

Would be nice though to be able to customize the path....

For the rest, just a very nice and pleasant small program.

Hello Mouser,

Where can I set the default path to files like logfile and .ini settings ?
After installation on a PC that is on a network, and has its userprofile on a server,
The program complaints about missing rights for creating files on that server....

I live in Europe, and I've been looking westwards many times.
Wandering how to make the move to the country of freedom and opportunities.
If I should try my luck in the USA.

I have visited the states in the meantime.
I have seen how people live there,
how the police acts, how people think.

Luckily, I was just the bystander... The happy tourist, who has a place to return to..... Outside the USA.
I turned out to have US colleagues, looking for ways to migrate to Europe .......... to get away from the US way of life, to bring their kids in safety.

Nowadays I look westwards in fear.
Scared by a police-state where there is no freedom no more, where human-rights have no value.
A state that is to scary to live in.

I did have US colleagues, who were looking for ways to migrate to Europe ..........

Shit, :o this will probably put me on the unwanted persons list .......

Well, I do live in Europe. In The Netherlands that is.
I have never heard about a ban on encryption.
There has however been a change on this subject indeed, but in a different way.
In case criminals have been caught, they are now obliged to give their passwords on any encrypted data that is theirs.

For as far as companies goes,
I know out of experience that we were effected by the Japanese mother company, that was forced to encrypt by Japanese national law.
Japanese companies now have to encrypt their sensitive data by law.
This to prevent theft and/or abuse of data, and/or resulting liability.

As far as I know, European cloud storage is about the last few privacy save options left on the globe.
Although now Wuala has been taken over by La Cie that might be one down soon .
Altough I must say, I am using Wuala, and it does encrypt by default for each and every user !!
It encrypts before uploading, so no key in the cloud.
But anyway we still have more sites like e.g.

Storegate
Hidrive

As we all know,

Only the sun rises for free.

So, first thing that comes to mind when finding a nice looking piece of freeware,  :)
BEFORE just hitting the "Install" button as everyone else does  :-[
is, ask ourselves where does the author get his benefits.
If you can't find any plausible source, then you might consider not to install.

And of course, like in this case, RTFM before starting to accuse people.

In case you don't know what RTFM means, :( , well, that explains it all, doesn't it ?

And for as far as installation goes,
 take your time to read the conditions you agree to when installing. Even when it is boring !!
By the way, during installation, I have seen so many people just blindly click through the installation without realising what they accept in some of the pop-up screens, like a nice searchbar, or some other unwanted crap....
People often complain about stuff that was installed, where they have agreed to that in the first place !! , just didn't take the time to check what they agreed upon.
Take your time to make sure you are installing what you think you are installing.
That saves you so many unwanted surprises !!

Take some more time during your installations,
and you will be rewarded by the lack of many sorts of unwanted crap.
And in case you take RTFM serious as well, you will start to enjoy the installed software to the full on top of that.

Hello Ianb,

Sound to me that you'd rather be looking for a proper backup solution, rather than an Archiver.
Have you ever tried Areca? :Thmbsup:
This app does about what you describe here. It allows proper browsing of your backup archives, and also allows easy retreiving single files from an Archive, allows also retreiving older versions of a file.
Allows stacking of several jobs, allows picking single files or directories and adding those to a joblist.
Allows choise of total, incremental, or differential archiving.
Doesn't allow nested archives as far as I recall so quickly, needs confirming however. :-\
Although I must say that there is no need for nested archives when using this app.

I'd say, give it a try, allow it some getting used to as well (actually reading some manual material :-[), since to have to figure out the user interface, which is only a bit strange first time use :huh:. After that it's as easy as can be. 8)

Hello IanB

You're right.
Izarc is an Archiver. It will allow you to browse in an archive.
The left pane here will show the tree with the archive itself as root directory.

If you want to browse outside the archive as well, you should look for a file manager.
Or for a combi of the both, then you should start looking at apps like:
- A43  Freeware  (can also be used portable)
- Explorer++  OpenSource  (portable app)
- Total Commander   Commercial product

Regarding comparing Izarc to Winrar, Winrar should better be better, since it is not free.
When making comparissons to other programms, one should compare with other freeware programs.
Under the freeware programs, I found it difficult to find a realy free program, which is also free for commercial use, like Izarc.

Hello IanB,

My biggest motivations for using Izarc were:
- Free, also for commercial use, since I use it on company PC's (WinRAR is ShareWare)
- "look and feel" simular to Winzip (which most users are familiar with)

I started to look for an alternative to Winzip because of the lack of LZH format in Winzip, (which is our company standard product, so our IT department doesn't want to invest in an additional archiver.....)
Our headoffice is located in Japan, where LZH is much used.
So I needed a free product that handles all.
That's how I ended up using IZarc. And was happy as well. :)

Well, if the Archiver review dates back to 2005,

It might be an idea to re-do the test, and see what the situation is by now.
For example, I have been using Izarc for a while now, and this program has come a long way in the last years. (as many others will have too.)

Does do delta and incremental backups, you can search within a backup, restore only 1 file from a backup, and and and . . . .

Another app for the more regular plain office user:

Is a portable app, though can also run from your PC, when copied there.
