Hi,

an incoming email should be automatically forwarded to several participants, using the forwarding party's email address as the sender address (so that if one of the final recepients has turned on his "away on holiday" notification, the original sender won't receive any of this junk).

If possible BCC instead of CC.

What kind of service/solution would you suggest? Just assume nothing is set in stone yet. Please also assume it should not cost hundreds of $.  :D

Hi folks,

after switching more and more to digital media I needed (wanted) to find software that would make it easy to use digital files like physical media. While you can easily put a piece of paper as a physical bookmark into a paper book, it's not that easy with formats like PDF, MP3, AVI, etc. Finally, I found these (all are freeware/donationware) for personal use:

sound files:
1by1: http://mpesch3.de1.cc/ (Plugin pack: http://mpex.net/foru...iewtopic.php?t=18563)
Trout: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=16157.0

PDF files:
Foxit Reader: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/ (you need to enable an option)

Now I'm searching something for video files. Is there a solution out there? Either 'automatic bookmarking' or a somewhat manual solution? There MUST be something better than having to write down where you stopped...

Oh, and of course the solution should not modify the files themselves.

Living Room / Logitech Wave keyboard
« on: March 25, 2009, 08:33 AM »
Hey folks!

When my Logitech Cordless Desktop Pro recently suddenly stopped working for a day (guess it needed a break) I was surprised to find only 2 posts (https://www.donation...search=logitech+wave) about it here. I found a few (only positive) reviews on the web, and a nice video about it and the concept behind it: http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=rdi9sD_U5Rg

I was able to convince my old keyboard to work again (by taking out the batteries, disconnecting the cable of the remote thingy, putting everything together, and repeating all steps a few times), but the Wave will probably be my next one after its final demise.

So if you are using the Wave already, feel free to post here. :)

Hi,

like not too many others, I'm reading *at least* a dozen books parallel - 4 pages here, 10 pages here, then 2 pages in yet another book. (None of which are fiction by the way.)

With regular (paper) books I can just use a physical bookmark, but for PDF files? Adobe Reader doesn't seem to have an option to open books where you closed them, are there other solutions out there?

Keeping track of page numbers in a txt file is cumbersome and not really the most elegant solution I can think of. If you ever faced this challenge, what did you do?

PS: no, my brain has no problems keeping track of the various content  8)

Hey folks,

I've been a long-term user of FIV but some little bugs are still not fixed (after years - and yes, I reported them), so I'm looking for a good freeware alternative.

What I mostly need are these features:
- speed (going through image)
- a good 'move option'*
- key functions can be used with the keyboard only

* like in ACDSee, FIV allows to press 'm' to open the move dialog, where I can (with just pressing 'm' once more) move the image to the folder where I moved the last image to. I can use the up/down keys to select other folders that I have previously used.

The program doesn't need to have lots of other features.

Hi,

updating xmplay earlier today had some nasty side-effect: all .exe files (of *all* programs installed) now have a xmplay icon, and the "type" changed to "XMPlay-able file". So when I now try to run a program by clicking an .exe file, it will only bring xmplay to the foreground... SUCKS!

I didn't yet PANIC because the installed programs are still starting when I double-click an associated file, for example .avi -> Zoom Player - so at least nothing important seems to have been overwritten. But how do I change this back so I could again start program directly?!? I use Vista.

Thanks in advance!

General Software Discussion / free and small mp3 player wanted
« on: February 18, 2009, 04:50 AM »
Hi,

I'm searching for a new player to loop files (after the last one in the list the first should be played again). It should be controllable with the keyboard (pause/resume) and should be rather small and simple instead of bloated. Other than that I only need (or let's say "I'd strongly prefer it to have") the ability to load play lists.

Winamp isn't running that well on this PC and xmplay crashes quite often when I pause and resume a lot (and virtually never when I just listen to live streams, very strange).

Which player(s) do you suggest?

After just reading in https://www.donation...index.php?topic=1146 that Bulk Rename Utility isn't updated anymore (just when I found some bugs, duh!), I want to ask you guys which utility you recommend.

It should be free, I don't need RegEx and I like it when I can use a program intuitively.

And it would be great if the author still updates it.

Living Room / huge Google Calendar problem!
« on: November 16, 2008, 12:26 PM »
Hi,

I love Google Calendar! Or better: I USED to love it, because the 5th of November was the last day I received SMS and email reminders... :( Only popup reminders still work... I waited this long because I hoped the problem would be fixed within several days, but it seems not to be a wide-spread problem - at least I couldn't find any current discussions or news reports about it on the web.

What to do?

Hey folks,

I have problems playing some FLV videos. Zoom Player just crashes. It's not randomly, it's happening over and over again with the same videos. I tried to use the VLC media player as an alternative, but that one doesn't allow me to skip forward (it just stops to play then) and it's far behind Zoom Player in regard to controlling it with the keyboard only.

Any ideas?

A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder - How Crammed Closets, Cluttered Offices, and On-the-Fly Planning Make the World a Better Place

Is your workspace a complex but personal jumble of information, data, and stuff? Is your home a comfortable space that has some black holes of organization? Then you may be on the track to greater productivity, creativity, and happiness, according to the authors. Reader David Freedman makes this a friendly listen as the authors reveal such details as the possibility that the discovery of penicillin would not have occurred if the lab had not been a mess.

If you believe that being very organized is always best, you will be shocked when you read this book. You'll discover that there is little to no research proving that you save time by plannig your day, but that there is extensive research showing that you can lose a lot of time by over-planning your day.

Really interesting!

Hi,

I need someone to make a few changes to my WordPress contact page form. Anyone here able and willing to do that? I don't mind sending you a few $ for it.

Fascinating! :o

Digital cameras have powers beyond what is immediately available to the user. On a standard Canon, for example, the fastest shutter speed option offered is 1/1,600 second, but the hardware can handle much more than that -- up to 1/60,000 of a second.

CHDK, the Canon Hacker's Development Kit, is an open-source software project that can be loaded on cameras using Canon's DIGIC II or DIGIC III firmware platforms. [...]

Hi,

since WordPress is a bit limited in regarding how the text could be formatted, I'm searching for a free online html editor. Any good ones out there?

I assume I could then copy and paste the html code into WordPress.

General Software Discussion / ripping a streamed news show to HD?
« on: March 29, 2008, 06:31 AM »
Hi,

on http://broadband.bnn.ca/bnn/?id=4446 there's a show from 03-11-08 (see right hand side navigation). Do you see a way for me to download that show/rip it to HD? Hopefully without having to install tons of software. :D

When a Brain Scientist Suffers a Stroke

As a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist, Jill Bolte Taylor has always known more about brains than most people. But when a brain hemorrhage triggered her own stroke, she suddenly had a front-row seat on the deterioration of the brain.

Living Room / Homepage for about $100?
« on: March 07, 2008, 05:03 AM »
Hi,

I'm considering to get up a homepage to test a business idea. Since it might totally fail I don't want to invest too much... is it possible to get a professional-looking, simple site for about $100 that includes - like an extended business card - only a page of text, a page with contact information and a contact form (info entered would be sent by email to me)? Where?

In the past I tried a do-it-yourself system where you just modify an existing layout, but although I spent lots of time with it I wasn't happy with the result.

Hi,

when I just did a few full-screen captures (pressed F11 in Internet Explorer to capture all of the visible area, I didn't need what's below), I found out that SC always captured the screen in 1282 x 1026 instead of my 1280 x 1024 screen resolution. Looks like SC added a white one-pixel border to every side of the capture.

I also found out that my SC installation wasn't the latest version, but updating it to the v2.37.03 didn't change this.

I also checked the options (which by the way are called "Preferences" in the tray icon menu, and "Options" in the options window that pops up), but the "On Capture/Add Border to Image" option isn't enabled.

Hi and a happy new year!  :)

A technical question: considering the amount of web-based apps, is it possible for a website/web-based application to dial your (landline) phone for you? I bet it's possible with PC-based phones (*), but what about regular phones that are not connected to a PC?

Maybe there are such phones available already, I just don't know...  8)

*I'm also interested in such hardware solutions - not hardware that only uses services like Skype though.

General Software Discussion / TrueCrypt - FAT32/NTFS
« on: December 18, 2007, 03:30 PM »
Hi,

I bought another external HD and formatted it NTFS (at least I'm very sure I did) within TrueCrypt. Strangely though, in TrueCrypt's "Select Device" window, it's now shown as FAT32 (all other HDs/partitions are shown as NTFS). Even more strange: when I right-click the mounted HD in the Windows Explorer and check its properties, Windows says it's NTFS.

Huh?
