General Software Discussion / PC Tools AV - an opinion please!
« on: April 23, 2008, 07:43 AM »
Hi,

It's a boring thread, i know...

I've been using AVG AV Network Ed. but find it to be a resource hog on poor ol' XPSP2 with 1.2G of RAM, especially with their version 8 - Anyone willing to recommend their free version as an alternative?

Would appreciate an honest opinion on PC Tools free version too!

General Software Discussion / Power Desk 7
« on: April 03, 2008, 10:14 AM »
Power Desk 7 has been recently released and i was looking for good opinions prior to upgrading.
It boasts Vista compatibility and other enhancements, but what i'm wondering is if it has improved in speed?
Has load up time and file find or preview been improved even for an XPHome user?

Living Room / USB device misbehaving
« on: February 01, 2008, 02:57 PM »
Hi,

A couple of years ago, i acquired a 40G USB device to backup my notebook to.
It works but often does weird things, like, it sounds like it's spinning around for nothing, shifting to and from the neutral area in a rather sporadic way.

When it's finally stable, i can perform backups and defrag it etc. but often i find myself turning it off/on to finally get it doing. Is this a sign that it's days are counted?

 :(

Living Room / Life without XP SP2 - is it possible?
« on: August 22, 2007, 05:40 PM »
Hi,

My situation is annoying.
SP2 takes up so much ressources!
Every time i re-install my notebook (hooked up to a Network) it takes about 5 to 10 times before the D-Link works properly and then, without SP2 loaded yet, my connection randomly falls all the time.

Any hint as to how i can keep my XP Home ed. without SP2?
I have 768MB of RAM and plan on going to 1.2G but in the meantime...
Also, do i have to install SP1 if i must install SP2?

Thanks for helping out folks!

Hi,

I did a booboo!!   :(
Ran a tweaking program without making any registry backups and FARR won't launch any of the selected programs even if enabled in program options. Anyone have an idea of which Windows Services are essential for FARR?

Thank you!

ProcessTamer / Can Process Tamer tame Firefox ?
« on: March 15, 2007, 06:57 PM »
Hi,

Firefox is known to have ups and downs with regards to it's use of system ressources.
Extensions are likely the major culprits.

Have Firefoxers found a way to configure Process Tamer to tame it somehow?

Best E-mail Client / Word Perfect Mail
« on: January 21, 2006, 05:34 PM »
Anyone have a chance to try out the new Word Perfect Mail?
I'm downloading right now but it's always nice to hear from someone who has tried and tested it.

Best E-mail Client / The Bat - how to customize?
« on: December 22, 2005, 09:44 AM »
I took a look at the Bats' forum today and tried to post a new thread but couldn't find the post new thread button (surfing in Firefox).  So here we are!

How does someone make the menu icons smaller?  Right-clicking on the menu gives you the Customize option which then offers you an infinite list and i can't see this option anywhere!     :o

Best E-mail Client / Barca 2
« on: November 21, 2005, 07:47 AM »
In the last few weeks, PocoSystems have greatly improved their email clients (Poco and Barca).

Barca 2 does not appear in the REVIEW section here and do believe it deserves a first look.
It has many features like Calendar, Tasks, Planner etc.
Search feature has been the major update and it performs incredibly well!
The back-up/restore feature is another handy asset that works just fine.

The price tag for a newcomer might be a bit too spicy, but i do prefer it to Outlook (not just for the price tag).

So much for my 2cents worth.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Win-spy
« on: November 18, 2005, 07:27 AM »
After downloading and running a scan with Webroot's Spy Sweeper,
a report was made for Clipboard H & S

Win-Spy
Risk rating: critical

Win-Spy is an invisible utility that may log all keystrokes by all users and may take screenshots that are saved to a hidden folder.

It's odd that after downloading and running Ewido spyware program yesterday none of this was detected.  Hum!....

Best E-mail Client / The Bat , the best ?
« on: May 18, 2005, 02:58 PM »
After reading the kudos for The Bat here at Donation Coder, i decided to give it a spin again and must say i'm impressed!  Just sent the company an email to say so and mentionned the fact that it was thanks to DC that i decided to try it again.

Is The Bat, The Best?  Big question!

After trying and purchasing Poco, Barca, Opera. Incredimail and Outlook, i must say that The Bat (Home ed.) will be looked at closely during this trial period.

Already, i've noticed that the Home Edition does not have the spell checker feature that the Pro one has.  The import/export feature for Calendar seems to be missing...

Outlook and Thunderbird are IMO hard to beat:

1. Thunderbird for price (free!), it's good looks and effectiveness in handling IMAP.
2. Outlook for the many addons like Copernic Desktop Search, Knockout and Desktask (all freeware!)
You also have many excellent sync programs out there that work quite well with Outlook: Intellisync (Yahoo!), Plaxo and Airset.com  These last elements make Outlook a very hard one to challenge!  If i were to consider Outlook application by itself it wouldn't be so bad (yet still pretty tough!).

The decision in favour of The Bat Home ed. will be difficult!
