I know it's not possible but there must be something close to FARR for Linux.

Christmas wishes to all!
Happy Holidays to those who don't.

General Software Discussion / Copernic Desktop Pro on special
« on: November 26, 2010, 12:14 PM »
$24.95 is not bad for what some consider to be a pretty good search engine for your desktop.

Not on for long.

After posting a suggestion on this thread:
https://www.donation...ic=24171.0;topicseen

This comment came shortly afterward:
"Resophnotes terms of use look very peculiar
http://www.resoph.co...es/Terms_of_Use.html
SKA"

So, i wrote to the author to convey this observation, here was his reply:
First of all, thanks for submitting ResophNotes to a forum.

"I am just an individual programmer and I like to share the app that might be useful to other people (I created it as a personal app so I can use it myself).  I might read too many modern day lawyer stories so I decided to add that "Terms of Use" to protect myself (I hope it can).  I copied and modified it from other applications (including other Simplenote clients) so I thought none of the terms are really special.  I am sorry if people got scared by them.

My bottom line: I am a very simple programmer and this is a freeware.  I just hope people like it and share their experience and suggestions with me.  I won't take those terms serious unless someone try to hold the software against me.  Check the change log, I've been trying very hard to fix bugs and add features (95% comes from users all over the world).  In the mean time, if you or other people on the forum like to make any suggestion on the terms, please don't hesitate to send any comment to me.  I can modify the terms as long as I still feel "protected".

Thanks a lot for your email,
C.Y."

So, if some of you geeks can lend a helping hand to this guy in making a better "terms of service" for product, i think he would gladly appreciate your feedback!

Living Room / Dropbox and Evernote problem
« on: August 22, 2010, 08:33 AM »
Could a geek tell me why my computer "crashes" instead of going into "standby mode" whenever Dropbox or Evernote desktop apps are running?

When i click on standby, the computer shuts down (thus crashing) instead.

Does the fact that i use SystemMechanic have anything to do with this?
Perhaps it disables a Windows feature that should be running which would allow Evernote or Dropbox to run without issues.
But which feature is being disabled is beyond my understanding...

People have posted at Evernote's forum to no avail.

-Windows 7 basic edition.

Living Room / System Mechanic (and registry fixers)
« on: August 05, 2010, 09:09 AM »
Hi,

There are previous threads, but seeing that those who talk about registry cleaners date back a while, i thought i'd drop a line or two about one specific shareware that i've personally purchased and used; namely and mostly about SYSTEM MECHANIC 9 (NOT PRO).

First of all, it seems to fix and tweak all kinds of things but doesn't really improve speed anywhere (browser or OS).
Secondly, with regards to Malwarebytes which was suggested on previous post, I've run it a few times on newly installed OS and it always finds two .txt files to remove. My OS backup disk was made from freshly installed system so i can't see where the culprits came from.

Running on Windows 7 (not Pro) with no AV or Firewall except for Micro$oft defaults and system is running just smoothly for the last three weeks.

I'd really like to send my notebook back to initial state and start all over.
Problem is, i don't have a backed up copy of OS yet.

Although the latest Copernic Desktop freeware version has greatly improved, i really like this long awaited update to Agent Ransack by MythicSoft. It's just lightweight and beautiful!

According to CBC.ca's Fifth Estate program last fall.
It is said that more and more Americans and Canadians have doubts regarding the events of 911.

Today, i fell upon this headline:
http://world911truth...w-911-investigation/

Seeing that "Coders" are architects in their own right, i thought you'd like to be aware of this happening and perhaps "digg" this story which is already listed.

Hi,

Friends of mine have a computer with ME on it.
As you know, it is just awful.

Was thinking of installing Linux over it in the hopes that it would become more stable and secure.
Is it possible?

If so, will Linux recognize the CDRW and USB ports?
Also, the fact that it's on a network it would also need to install the HP Printer drive right?

Thanks for your comments!

General Software Discussion / Make Firefox startup faster.
« on: December 28, 2009, 05:31 PM »
Is it just me?

I found this tweak that seems to work at making Firefox load a bit faster.
Simply add a space and /Prefetch:1 to the target in program properties.

Can someone confirm i'm not hallucinating?

Find And Run Robot / Can't launch .odt files in 2.77.02
« on: October 14, 2009, 02:03 PM »
Hi,

Am i missing a plugin or somethin'?
FARR won't launch .odt files.

OpenOffice is sitting idle on the Taskbar waiting for command.

To Opera users,

I have a nice bookmarklet that allows you to "search site" but if i could search specific pages, that would be handy at times. Is this possible?

Didn't post at Opera's forum as they are usually slow, even slower today.
Must be the distance between the two sponds of the Altantic.

Although i'm pretty much satisfied with the Acronis copy i have, i thought i'd share this find on:

Living Room / How to claim unallocated disk space on XP ?
« on: July 16, 2009, 02:15 PM »
Hi,

I would like to reclaim some unallocated disk space on my notebook but XP isn't too user friendly in that regards.
Couldn't find a good answer on the web so i hope someone can.

Much obliged!

Find And Run Robot / Need help with search entry
« on: July 06, 2009, 07:33 AM »
Hi,

FARR is still by far the best in its' category!

I classify many documents with 09/07/07 (y/m/d) typed in at the beginning but it doesn't seem to be too practical with FARR searching. Could someone enlighten me on this?

General Software Discussion / EPIM RC2
« on: May 05, 2009, 03:31 PM »
For what it's worth...

Folks at EssentialPIM invite beta users to try out their RC candidates.
For whatever reason, whenever i try them i get an "access violation 007F30D1 in module..." error message and can't even open the program.

The programmer over at EPIM tells me it's something to do with my XP SP3 security system that's blocking it.
I asked him to give me some idea on how to unblock it but he never comes around to specifics (that doesn't pay enough i guess). So i was wondering if some techie here could tell me if it's my operating system that's making life miserable for me or if it could be the program itself that lacks proper coding?

I've done this many times with different releases and it only happens on non-official editions.

Living Room / Dual XP Home start up screen
« on: March 21, 2009, 07:54 PM »
Hi,

I was setting up a partition when someone rang at the door.
When i came back, i found the computer was being reinstalled by itself.
Can't figure out how that ever happened!

Anyway, now i've got a dual XP Home start up screen with 30 second delay.
Can someone guide me on how to remove one of the two or simply take off the delay?

Thank you!

General Software Discussion / Make Firefox 3 load faster
« on: February 02, 2009, 12:56 PM »
Most of the tweaks i saw in this vid didn't do much for me.
But a little further into the clip, there were a few i had never seen and so i decide to give them a shot. Working on XP Home SP2, this has made a notable difference for me.

Link to video.

Be advised that you may want to lower your speaker volume...

Almost forgot! It can be run from a usb device.

Picked it up from a LifeHacker tip today.

Not sure how to define this one but i just picked up the freeware version and i think it's a keeper.

Seeing that we're interested in small software programs i thought i'd share with you.

Found it here:
http://www.freedownloadaday.com/
But you can get it from the programmers page as well:

Living Room / Security issue with old hard disk
« on: July 13, 2008, 07:18 AM »
Hi,

Excuse me but I didn't quite know how to formulate the title.

They've recently setup a new hard disk in my notebook (gone from 40G to 80G) and i had just installed XPHome (with no data) on the ol' 40. After they finished the work, they failed to give me back my disk and i forgot to ask them for it.
I'm out of town and was wondering if it was worth asking it back?
I now realize that they also made a few bucks on it (by keeping it) but i can live with that.

Living Room / Help needed with NVidia upgrade
« on: June 05, 2008, 05:37 PM »
Hope someone will have a solution to this problem.

I just upgraded Nvidia driver and the sound is now coming out of the notebook as well as the earphones.
Usually when earphones are on the sounds are supposed to cut off from the notebook right?
