And yet another reason to use Universal Extractor for situations like this.  http://legroom.net/software/uniextract
What does that do for you? Is the Ask Toolbar something you can delete after extracting and still be able to install the main program?

Yet another reason to monitor your installs with something like Total Uninstall or Ashampoo Uninstaller.

B&N's Nook Color is worth checking out.
The color Nook is LCD. Basically, it is a very small tablet. E-ink is much better for reading books. No reflective glare, no washout in outdoor light, small power needs, etc.

I have owned a Sony Reader for years now. I love it. I have the latest model on backorder right now and I'm anxious to get it.

I don't know about reading slower than in print but I certainly don't see it. I do know that I read a whole lot more than I did before I got the Reader. It is great because you can take them anywhere. Also, when I travel, I can take hundreds of books with me now instead of one.

General Software Discussion / Re: True Launch Bar v5.0

[-you don't have to be impressed. Just use it, and soon it will be hard to imagine a life without. True Launch Bar is one of my absolute favourites.

Maybe I'll give it another try. The problem is that I currently use a bar built with PowerPro and I have grown accustomed to its power and configurability.

I own a copy but I've never been that impressed. I haven't loaded it in a long time. With the new version I thought I'd go to the site and see what the feature set is. On the features page I find:
"Window Vista Compatible - NEW"

Okay, if that is considered NEW then I think I'll continue to pass.

I never realized that. Good to know.

I think their wording could use some work. The one statement seems pretty unambigous; "on a single computer". I certainly consider my laptop a computer.

Unless the licensing has changed you are permitted to install DOpus on one main computer and one portable/notebook computer with the single license.

I don't think it has changed and I don't think multi installs are authorized. You can buy a single license or a dual license. The dual license obviously costs more but you can then install on 2 machines.

From their site:
The single install Licence allows you to install Directory Opus on a single computer.

You can also buy a USB export license which allows you to export a licensed copy to a USB drive. That is only $10 more.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the upgrade price is too high. I'm a fan of the software and upgraded from ver 8. I bought ver 8 at a discount offered here for DC members. I remember that I paid as much for the upgrade as I did for the initial (discounted) purchase.

If I thought the upgrade price was too high then I would not have upgraded.

When it does come time to upgrade it will be interesting to see what the roadmap is for the next version. Truthfully, ver 9 does everything I need it to do. I upgraded from 8 to 9 because ver 9 was Vista compatible and 8 was not. I wonder if there will be any compelling feature that will make me upgrade. (who am I kidding? I'm a sucker for always having the latest software!)

This might indicate that ver 10 is right around the corner. It's about that time.

I love DirOpus and think it is worth the high price but, be warned that the upgrade costs are usually quite high also.

What I've found is a pretty soft implication that some phones cannot be upgraded to higher levels of Android because the phone hardware won't support the upgrade.

I haven't seen that but I don't doubt it. I have seen some phones that will have some limitations after an upgrade. If I remember correctly, the original Moto Droid will get the upgrade but will not have the wireless hotspot capability that is in 2.2. Hardware limitation is what I read.

86
There are only 2 ways to upgrade the os. 1) an official, over the air download from the service provider or 2) root the phone and install a home brewed rom.

In the first case, the phone manufacturer and service provider have to integrate the os into the phone and ensure it works with all the hardware and apps.

In the second case, rooting the phone is not for the casual user. There is always a risk of bricking the phone. And, the warranty might be voided unless you can unroot.

I am currently waiting on an official release of 2.2 for my HTC Incredible.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Sidewinder-Discount 50%

I just took a look at your site. It said that if I use Windows I "must have Sidewinder". Well, I hope I don't get caught because I haven't been using it. To tell the truth, up until today I didn't know there was this requirement.

Living Room / Re: IP address on public network
« on: June 15, 2010, 07:33 PM »
Good to know. I'm still not sure how they would do that if I'm wireless. If I connected at a Starbucks, dl'ed a file and left, I don't see how they would be able to trace that to my name or home address. Same for a hotel; I could be in a room or just a driveby in the parking lot.

But is the MAC address shown outside the local network?

If I'm using a hotel's wireless network and I connect to a torrent, is that traceable back to me?

If I connect wirelessly to a public network, or even the open network at my work, is my computer traceable? Is my ip address dependent on the source router or my computer?

Living Room / Re: Is a college education worth the money?
« on: June 09, 2010, 09:15 AM »
An education is a lot more than just a tool to make money. True, educated people make more money on the average. But, there is more to it. I am 52 years old and I have a Bachelors and a Masters. When I was younger, all I cared about was financial success. Now that I'm older, I see that having an education changes how I see the world.

A good analogy is how you dress. Some people groom themselves and dress nicely because it is a means to an end (finding a mate). Most people, however dress nicely because it makes them feel good about themselves. It is the same about an education. It changes how you see the world and how you see yourself.

Living Room / Re: Cell phone number porting

Thanks steeladept for the clear answer.

Buying from the store is not an option as I have already ordered online. I'm getting an HTC Incredible. Unfortunately, they are backordered everwhere. You will rarely find them in stores and online sales are backordered for about 3 weeks. I ordered on 17 May and have an estimated ship of 4 Jun. If ordered today they show a 17 Jun ship date. All the reviews say it is worth the wait though.

I don't even know if we use sim cards. I've never had to mess with one. I've had 5 or 6 phones, all with Sprint and never had a sim card.

Living Room / Cell phone number porting
« on: May 26, 2010, 08:24 PM »
Anybody know how number porting works? I ordered a new phone online (HTC Incredible) which is currently backordered. I asked to have my current number ported. I'm assuming that the phone will come already activated. So, what happens after Verizon activates my new phone with the ported number from Sprint? There will be a couple of days overlap with both old and new phones having the same number, or is my old phone disabled as soon as Verizon activates the new one? Will I be without a phone while the new one is in transit?

It's true I tell you. I let mine get past the Lacelevel once and I had to throw out the hard drive and get a new one. I had uncontrolled entropy!! Never again.

And it's not just hard drives. Once I let my new Lexus go unwashed past the Lacelevel and, like the hd, I had to junk the car. Again, uncontrolled entropy.

What's the Best? / Re: Best file archiver/compresser
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:32 AM »
I've used Winrar for ages, and not just because of compression ratios. I just like Winrar's interface and configurable context menu. I also like the multiple formats it handles. With a lifetime license, I see no need to change.

With a terabyte hd costing under $100 and broadband connections ubiquitous, I don't even look at the compression ratio. I'm not that worried about a few bytes, although, I'd wager that rar is one of the better formats for compression ratios.

Can't you do this in Word using Autofill or a macro? I'm not really sure what you are trying to do as I don't know what you mean by "user can choose where to start". Start what?

I use to use Copernic before moving to Windows 7. Now, I don't see the need.

The Pro version is for commercial use. If you look the version comparison chart you'll see that it doesn't offer much more than the free Home version does in the way of features.

Living Room / Re: Amazon.com == AMAZING!
« on: March 04, 2010, 03:49 PM »
I do shop at Amazon quite a bit. I think of Amazon as the Walmart of the online world (without all the obese ladies in electric carts). I say that because I can get almost anything at that one site.

I shop online as much as I can because I avoid taxes that way. I know that soon, the states will start collecting taxes for online purchases but I dread that day.
