General Software Discussion / Re: How do you launch stuff?
« on: September 20, 2007, 07:40 AM »

[16:07] <srikat> In my work, I have to do a lot of copy/paste
[16:07] <srikat> so was wondering if there's an easy way to copy and paste
[16:07] <srikat> like, if I select some content and move my mouse to say left top corner of my screen, it should copy
[16:07] <srikat> right corner top should paste
[16:07] <srikat> is any such program available?

Can PowerPro do this?
Yes, I just tried it and it works. I set Powerpro so that Bump Screen Right sends Ctrl-C.

Here's what I have running currently:

* FARR
* Enso
* Direct Access
* True Launch Bar
* Objectdock+
-- And when the next update is out, I'll start running Dash Command again as well.

Yes, I know that I use to many application launchers for my own good…but I love them all and can't really see myself removing any of them  :-[

Dash and FARR together??? Seems odd.

I gave Dash a good try, even buying the license. But, it is no where near ready for primetime. After using it I realized that it didn't do anything that FARR couldn't do and FARR was more mature (even if Mouser won't do a public release  :P)

1. Powerpro hotkeys & mouse assignments
2. Powerpro built toolbar.
3. Start menu
4. FARR

For those of us in the US military, you can get Office 2007 for $20. Just call your admin folks and ask about the MS Home User program.

Having said all that, I like the 2003 interface better than the new ribbon. I'm using 2007 but I have an add-in that brings back the old toolbars as a tab in the new ribbon.

305
Using %FARRDIR% as a starting point, you should be able to get to anywhere on the USB drive. For example
"/%FARRDIR%\..\SomeDir\SomeProg.exe"

306
Not cheap though if you have to pay for it ;)
I'll say! Reading about this prompted me to look it up. It is about $300 on Amazon.com. Too steep for my budget. That's about $300 more than Picasa or Xnview.

DcUpdater / Re: Won't shut down

I just ran it again by manually launching it and it worked fine. It even found the version info for FARR Fox. Go figure! :huh:

DcUpdater / Won't shut down
« on: September 06, 2007, 07:59 PM »
Okay, DCUPdater pops up for a scheduled check but it can't find Version info for FARRFox. It says "get version failed". No problem. But, now it will not exit. I tried the red X, File exit, and Exit from the tray icon. None work. I had to shut it down from taskmanager.

The website just worked for me. The forums page said
The Forum is currently down due to moving servers to a new location. Please bear with us while we make this transition. Thank you.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Public release in august ?
« on: September 05, 2007, 11:16 AM »
It won't be until Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep.

Seriously, I don't care. The alpha I'm using now is pretty darn good. No bugs that I see. So, calling it "public" won't mean much to me.

General Software Discussion / Re: Settings backup software?
« on: September 04, 2007, 07:58 PM »
The problem with starting fresh with no backward compatibility is that the business world would revolt. I know in my organization, we are very slow to adapt to new software. We wait until it has been out there for quite a while before using it. That goes for the OS as well as applications. I know most business' would not be willing to do a wholesale swap for a new OS and new application software to go with it. It is too expensive and too risky.

Let's face it, MS makes most of their profit from the corporate world. Not too many consumers are buying $500 Office suites. Business' have too much invested in legacy software to simply change everything.

I didn't blame anybody. I'm just saying what the situation is.

Carol, it only gets worse with Vista. In Vista, all the ini and other config files that programs write to their program folder get redirected to a virtual "program files" directory. You end up with some configuration data in the registry, some in the virtual folders and some in "ProgramData" folder. You have to hunt all over the place to find things like plugins, *.cfg, etc.

I advocate using TotalUnistall also. I use it for most installs. It is especially good if you download any of the GiveAwayoftheDay (http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/) software as you can record the registration information for reinstallations. I still use the older, freeware version of TotalUninstall. It still fits my needs.

Living Room / Re: Keeping track of software license/serial keys
« on: September 04, 2007, 12:28 PM »
Wow, all the threads today have the same theme!

Again, I use Evernote to track all my SW reg codes. I like having all my data in one place, readily available. I'm using Evernote to track all my contacts, web passwords, sw registrations, recipes, etc.

I love Keepass but I have been copying all my stuff over to Evernote. Why? Because I can encrypt text notes in it and I always have it running.

One of my Common Dialog folders points to a folder of shortcuts to other folders. Works great. Gives you an unlimited amount of favorites.

General Software Discussion / Re: portable onenote?

I tried the Thinstall version and it was extremely slow to load. Too painful for me to use daily.

No, I'm on Gmail several times a day and I've never gotten this. Do you have the Gmail shell extension installed?

Yes, same situation. Solution was to hurry up and buy Evernote Pro while there is still a member discount.

I actually struggled with the same thing. I own OneNote 2007 and like it a lot. But, I wanted to carry my data around with me. Evernote has a portable version as well as a desktop version. (You have to buy both  :( , $20 each with the discount). I bought both just a couple of days ago. One thing I find I like in Evernote that OneNote doesn't have is auto-filter categories. In other words, I can tell Evernote that anything I clip with the words "Ribs" will go to my "BBQ" category. On the other hand, I like OneNote's interface a bit more, but I am starting to get used to Evernote's also.

Edit:
I said above that you have to buy both, but that is inaccurate. You only need both if you want to synchronize databases between a desktop and portable version.

321
For me a big factor is portability. I like using the same FM on my USB drive as I do on my home PC. I now own xplorer2Pro, TC, and DirOpus 9. All three have portability. With X2 and DirOpus you have to pay a bit more for the portable version. TC is portable right out of the box. I also know from the above list that FreeCommander is portable.

My all time favorite: DirOpus by a long shot!

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Borders
« on: August 29, 2007, 10:44 PM »
I still see this. Choosing no border gives me the thin border.

It converts documents into PDF format - you can use it like a printer to output PDF files.

I think it is more than that. From their website:
Edit PDF documents directly just like working in the original file

This is the part I'm interested in.

324
PDF Converter 4 is scheduled to show up on Bits du Jour tomorrow. I don't know what the discount will be.

My question is for basic text, what does this converter offer that a copy/paste doesn't. I have a Sony Ereader that I love but it's PDF display capabilities are limited. I'm looking for something that will convert a pdf to editable text that I can work with in Word.

I was looking to give it a go but they don't seem to offer a trial version.

325
I also am back to xplorer2 after switching to Vista. It is fully compatible and I could not afford the too steep price of updating my DirOpus. My only regret here is that I bought the professional version. Months later I realize that I really only use the functionality of the freeware version. Oh well, at least the price was reasonable and, at least for now, the upgrades are free.
