I'm not knocking your submission. Free is good.

You're correct, mine is BS8 not 2008. But, in 2008, there is an option to "create a video DVD" as well as "Burn a video dvd from a prepared folder". BS2009 does not have the option to "create a video DVD". So, for me, there are less features than my current version.

Burning studio is a great program. If you don't already have it, get this free one or any of the other versions.

177
This is not as complete as my Burning Studio 2008. I opened both side by side. BS2009 does not have the ability to create DVD video whereas 2008 does. So, if you already have 2008, loading this would be a downgrade.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Everything plugin for FARR

Oh, now I see. I was expecting it to open up Everything's result window. Very nice indeed!  :-*

Yeah, still not getting it. When I type "ev", FARR is not seeing that as pointing to Everything. Everything is running.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Everything plugin for FARR

I think I'm doing something wrong here. I put the dll in the newly created folder and put es.exe into Everything's folder. Then I pointed the plugin to where es.exe is. When I type "ev" into FARR, all I get is a list of all the folders on my computer. If I try "ev something", I get explorer opening to a folder with "something" in its name.

Just got it from there, no problem. Do you have trouble getting it?
The download will always be available. But, the code said it wouldn't be delivered until the New Year.

I highly recommend this software. I have one copy that I recently purchased through TrialPay. I just applied for 2 more free codes for my other computers.

I'm straying a bit here but I am going to give Google Desktop another whirl. They came out with a drag/drop upload to Google Docs widget. That, combined with their Gmail widget, makes GDS stand out from the rest.

Locate32 will find files that Copernic doesn't because Copernic only finds in the directories you tell it to search.

You might want to give Everything a try. I like it better than Locate32. It is lightning fast and doesn't need to index as it uses the NTFS journal.

184
Locate32 is a file indexer. It will keep an index of all the files on your disk and will very quickly locate those files.

Copernic is a file searcher. It will index your files but will also search inside those files. If you want to find a Word document or pdf that has the word "Supercalifragilicious", then Copernic, or any of the other searchers, will find those files for you.

Obviously, a file searcher is more powerful than a simple indexer, but it also taxes a system more. So, it depends on what you need.

Usually when a company produces upgrades that often they are not adding that much into the versions. I doubt if there is a world of difference between ver 5 and ver 6. Just say no!

I am not a fan of Ashampoo because of their marketing strategy. Having said that, I do use Ashampoo Burning Studio 8 as my only burning program. Better than the Nero that it replaced.

Found Deals and Discounts / ACDSee Photomanager 2009 - 65% off
« on: December 14, 2008, 08:53 AM »
I just picked up ACDSee Photomanager 2009 for an effective price of $17.50. List price is $50. Right now with each purchase they are giving 2 $10 gift cards for Amazon.com. Heck, I can always use those. So:
25BF08  code for %25 off of ACDSee until 31 Dec (-$12.50)
2 Amazon cards (-$20)
$17.50 effective price.

Thanks to all who answered my post about photo tagging. That post is what prompted me to look at photo managers. I tried all the ones mentioned in the post and settled on ACDSee. The discount pushed me over the edge.

That is why it is a good idea to have your data files on a drive other than the system partition.

I now have Returnil on all 3 of my machines. With the registered version you can choose on the fly to save data at shutdown or not. With the free version you have to turn protection off, reboot, install your program or changes, turn protection back on and reboot.

This is a real life saver to have on my wife's computer. She is not real computer smart and my 6 year old also uses that machine. I was always having to fix it after they messed something up. Now, I have it all set up in a good state and no matter what they do to it all I have to do is reboot and I'm back to a pristine state.

The other good one I saw was Roboform.

I did the Snapfish trial. Very easy and cheap. I signed up, they gave me 50 free prints. I bought one print with the credit they gave me. So, I got Returnil for the 90 cents postage that Snapfish charged me.

General Software Discussion / Basic Question on Photo Tagging
« on: December 11, 2008, 03:39 PM »
I want to organize a huge library of photos by tagging them. I currently do not use any photo ablum software except for the occasional use of Picasa. Normally, I view my photos with Xnview and have them organized in folders.

If I use a particular software and tag the photos, will those tags be portable? For instance, if I tag in PhotoPro Album and later decide on Photoshop Album, will the tags show up in the new software?

I've got some rare free time coming up and I want to finally get this done.

General Software Discussion / Re: MaxThink
« on: December 05, 2008, 10:11 AM »
I started using MaxThink on a Kaypro CPM machine.  (That makes me the oldest.)
Not necessarily. My first machine was a Kaypro II. No hard drive, 2 360K floppies and tiny, monochrome screen. And, just like my first car, I wished I had saved this.

I just this week bought Returnil through trialpay. That wasn't on that list.

I was using Symantec Corporate Antivirus because I can install it free and legal from my workplace. It was suprisingly good as far as no impact to my computer use. I never felt its presence.

Now I do not use any antivirus, antispyware, or firewall. I am using Returnil and everything runs in a virtual environment. After every reboot I am back to a clean slate. I don't have to worry about viruses or malware. Plus, I can try out new software virtually before committing it to my real hard drive. The only drawback is that I have to turn off protection and reboot if I want to make any lasting changes.

193
I second the idea of using Total Uninstall. I like to monitor my installs to ensure I get a full uninstall.

There have been several instances where I went to install a piece of software when I noticed that I already have a uninstall log by the same name. My memory isn't what it used to be.

A bit off topic but I've started keeping a spreadsheet with a list of all the books I have read. Quite a few times I've gotten 50 pages into a book when I realize that it is starting to sound familiar.

I just Googled "Packed Molebox" and it looks like it is okay.

From PC Tools on wilderssecurity.com
That was a packer detection. It's quiet unusual for legit software to use Molebox packer for it's "protection"... It's simply begging to be detected as false positive...

Living Room / Re: Free printable shopping lists - neat idea
« on: November 17, 2008, 07:36 AM »
www.tickedlist.com is not bad. The printable list is designed not to waste ink with too much fancy stuff and also it has a mobile site so you can browse your list on your phone.
Hey, thanks for that link. I just signed up and I'm giving it a try. The only thing I can't figure out is when I create a task it doesn't show up on the Today page as due. I created a task due today but Today shows nothing due. The funny thing is that in the left sidebar it shows the task as due. I notice there is no help on the site and no contact info.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Free Ashampoo Burning Studio 2008

I suspect they are very good at squeezing every last penny of possible income out of less than class leading products.

I own Burning Studio 8 and I am very pleased with it. It is rock solid for me but I have to say that I've never tried the slideshow feature that CleverCat complained about. I find it refreshing when compared to the bloatware that Nero now puts out. I bought BS8 when Vista came out because my old Nero 6 was not Vista compatible. Well, I have since downgraded back to XP but I keep using Burning Studio over Nero.

If possible, a FARR plugin based on this program would be nice.
Just create an alias with Everything's command line.

I still am happy with PD 8 on XP. I see no reason to upgrade. I did look at the "what's new" list and did not see anything there worth upgrading to. I know PD 2008 has been out for awhile but I am perfectly happy with the previous version.

Remember that you can export your config from within Dir Opus. Any time I make a small change (quite often) I export the config. If you ever have to reinstall you simply import the config and you are back up and running in seconds.
