General Software Discussion / Re: Lock PC during Boot. ???
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:40 AM »
I have never crossed anything about BootManager asking for a password, all it does is provide option to a user to choose between the OS's, sorry 40hz, i really can't understand the point here. :tellme:

The Windows logon password is not good enough?

What's your desired usecase here - preventing people from, say, booting from an USB stick or DVD? Preventing them from getting into your Windows account? Or actually securing your data?
If it's last item, look at BitLocker or (IMHO preferable) TrueCrypt.
I wouldn't choose setting password from BIOS, its rather too much,,,since i am on a dual boot, i already have password setup for Winxp and doing that for Win7 wouldn't be a problem (just time consuming), but i would rather give a single password and would be able to boot to any partition from the Boot Manager, this program i am talking about rewrite's the mbr, so before even the pc begins to read the xp mbr, it would first read these changes....haha (how do i explain this in words)
Bit locker is not my choice, i am not big on encryption, i had some painful moments with it already. But this program is their, i don't know its name.
Also i heard its not freeware, i am ok with that.

General Software Discussion / Lock PC during Boot. ???
« on: February 03, 2013, 07:32 AM »
Hello,
people if anyone can suggest me something regarding to Locking PC during the boot process, it would ask for a password or something. I heard about a program that would require a pendrive to unlock the PC during the initial startup. Then give a password.
I had heard about it a few years back, then i never thought my PC would require Locking, but now i see their is a great need for Locking my PC. Hope you understood my problem.
Google would bring a lot of results, but not the one i wanted.

General Software Discussion / Re: FastStone Image Viewer
« on: February 01, 2013, 04:08 AM »
do you use both? If yes,
I'm curious what you'd use each one for - when or why you would choose to open one instead of the other?

I use Irfanview, if the images are not too big ( i mean in length ),for faster viewing of images and if the images contain large information and needs a magnifier and for short editing Faststone is the default choice for me, i tried Ashampoo Photo commander, to view 15 jpg images named serially from 1-15 and guess what, after reaching #4 i try to view the next image , it would jump to image #7 its all haphazard, tried it with even Ashampoo Photo v.10, just for a photo editing and viewing its bloated.
Their are few things which is good like batch renaming short editing, with little better aesthetic feel etc but little more bloated. I don't have it anymore.  :-\
Faststone never shown this bug, its stable as bedrock. Batch renaming works beautifully, croping and texting an image work fine,,,ideal choice for viewing digital comics.

I am still using v.4.6 , its great, beats Ashampoo Photo Commander any version, photo editing is great too, viewing digital comics, etc etc, i only wish it was a tad faster like Irfanview, i can't think of any reason why not to use it....

I had already created an XP entry from Win7 by using these commands:
c:\bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d "Windows XP"
c:\bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=D:C:\bcdedit /set {ntldr} path ntldr
c:\bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast
This would work if Win7 was in C: and XP in D: But i had other way round, the link you provided i'm going through and taking notes, it looks like it would work , need some time to verify everything. Will holler back.

107
So after restoring the XP image i booted from a Win7 Repair Disc and although it corrected the Win7 entry, and after a restart it would boot only to Win7.

Install EasyBCD and add the XP entry back in again.

How to Add Windows XP to Windows 7 Boot Manager Using EasyBCD

Thank you for that, it worked and , i installed it under Win7 first and the entry exitsted for Winxp. But when i reboot to Win7 after selecting it from the Boot Menu, it would not boot properly, i can see the mouse pointer but the desktop is all blank. I have to call Task Manager to bring it to Desktop. So i boot to Winxp and format D: and later restore Win7 image suprisingly the boot menu exist, even for Win7 and later i would boot to Win7 , no problem.

But i was hoping for a more concrete approach through repair disc or winpe disc. Any chance i can achieve that , by the disc.

General Software Discussion / Re: Who is still runnig XP?
« on: January 25, 2013, 11:50 PM »
My main OS would be Winxp since it came with the rig, and i have to say something that comes along  with a package does last long and is better compared to those downloaded from net, i downloaded Winxp image from my Technet account, and that image i made it to oem and after a few weeks of heavy browsing and downloading it would not behave the same as the original copy that came with the rig.
That wouldn't give any reason to prefer more than Win7 but, i really like the eye candy and the whole aesthetic feel of Win7 when i simply leave it open, i don't know if its me, but i noticed the copy/paste feature is considerably faster in Win7, and tweaking command prompt wasn't to time consuming, and the major thing i liked was configuring the recording option and selecting main audio device, which was replaced by some sound card was also easy, all these small things have been improved.

I am an average joe, and i do not use my pc for any major things, but i tweak a lot and noticed a lot of the small things i had a little time consumed in Winxp has been reduced in Win7. But i will not leave Winxp that easily or any time sooner. I can't comment on kernel level or can't give any comments what an administrator found it useful to him/her.
I am on a dual boot, and it is rocking for now.

109
Hello folks,
i have a dual aboot system, C: has XP and D: has Win7, although they boot preety well, i did a XP restore in C: yesterday ( for a test ), now this removed the boot menu and showed Press Ctrl+Al+Del during restart: this would mean the boot entry nor the mbr doesn't exist.

After restoring an XP image it booted straight to xp, now i want the Win7 entry too in the boot menu. I am assuming the WinXP boot menu can't handle this( it may add an entry but it would not boot to Win7), and the Win7 Boot menu, would install certain files in C: when Win7 is being installed (certain files i noticed), the Boot Menu would show the XP entry as Older version of Windows.

So after restoring the XP image i booted from a Win7 Repair Disc and although it corrected the Win7 entry, and after a restart it would boot only to Win7. I had made a backup of bcdfile from the command prompt using Repair disc. Exporting it has no effect, and i tried the bootrec /rebuildbcd /scanos to and other commands , didn't work. It only noticed Win7 in D:

It was only during the Win7 fresh installation, which would make changes to the Boot Menu, and i have no clue how i can replicate that by using a Win7 Repair Disc or Winpe Disc.

Hope my problem is understood, i tried few things about adding the Winxp entry in the boot menu and add certain files in C: as well, it would add an Windows Xp entry but it didn't show in the Boot Menu during restart it would straight boot to Win7.

Can anyone suggest me something, i have been fondling with this question in my mind for a while. Please help me out.

Change the other pane to what you want then save it as the default lister. Settings > Set as Default Lister
Thanks , i knew it was somewhere near, its really screws your head when you are multitasking in the heat of things, and that too with Dopus, which i feel is still the most complicated file explorer i have used.  Thanks for the tip and i will paying more visits to Andy’s custom configuration and icons: what choice do i have here.

Anyways happy holidays and Merry Chritmas in advance.

General Software Discussion / Re: yet another file manager thread...
« on: September 16, 2012, 01:40 PM »
Just stumbled upon this thread, i want to give my opinion too, i prefer program's or application : in this case being a file manger, that would consume
little or very less memory, i have used not a huge but quite a few good ones like q-dir which consumed around 8 mb Dopus around 60 mb, xyplorer around 4 mb no matter if i do a copy paste of a huge file . The least was Total commander, around 2 mb but i still can't get it to understand why people llike it so much. Especially power users, as they say... ::)

I use xyplorer and the tab feature makes it really easy if i want to do a copy paste or extract or move things with an external device attached, that is one thing i really like: single reason i use x yplorer.
Besides that i don't use xyplorer or any other file manager.

But xyplorer is good :)

wow Renegade, that a new thing for me, fruits , vege's herbs spices , bread rice, how about some one living in USA, i think a lot of our diet is sometimes governed by religeous teaching or thoughts, really i do mix n match too much of what Renegade just mentioned, but i am not on a stupid diet, but sometimes they show such lovely meals prepared in an American restaurant, and bread ( or wheat) would be their primary base for most of their food item eaten, in one episode the host mentioned that some hotdog item(with some accompaniment's) would serve as a complete meal, for anyone living in that particular city (in that episode).

I like bread too, but sometimes i feel how much american people take dried , non juicy stuffs down their throat.
I mean their has got to something they must be eating some supplement which would fulfill Vit and Minerals intake :

I think a typical house wife could answer this question better. :) :(

« on: July 17, 2012, 01:11 PM »
Hello folks ,
this is nothing related to program or software issues, all i want to know is that , are their any folks from United States of America or any other country like Europe : would you be kind enough to share your staple diet.
Like i see programs like Discovery , National Geographic and Travel and Living, where they show American people eating bread in many forms and name like hotdogs burger, stakes and dessert where you don't care to remember,
like i am Buddhist and i am from Sikkim (India) a small state actually the second smallest in Sikkim although their are many communities here too, but being a Bhuddist from Bhutia Cummunity our staple diest is rice, morning is fried rice with eggs or whatever remains of the last night supper along with a tea.
During afternoon its Rice, Millet and vegetable or sometine beef meat cooked sometime boiled and served.
Night is the same as afternoon supper.

What would be yours.

General Software Discussion / Visual Basic or Visual C++
« on: July 06, 2012, 01:49 PM »
Hello again, i am aspiring to be at least a novice programmer who can make a small clock for pc or making some little puzzle game that doesn't require some heavy duty programming skill, all i want to make a single exe programs that could be used by any user.

So far , i just got my head into QBASIC and slowly i want to move up to Visual Basic and then Visual C++, but what i would to know if, i can achieve this by using Visual Basic or Visual C++, lately i got this feeling of sticking just with one programm:  and achieve mastery in one tool of a trade.

So what would you suggest me with to start with QBASIC or move to C++ then Visual C++ and Visual Basic, hell i don't know what all this terminology mean even in theoritical manner.

Can anyone suggest me something to this dilemma.

PS: i already have Express edition which contains Visual C# 2008,Visual C++ 2008,Visual Basic 2008 and Web Developer: so i want to learn Basic now, so would be the choice.

http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/2496/96365646.png

Also i got a copy of microsoft Visual Studio 6, which also contains Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0

I had repeatedly excellent experiences with the DRevitalize. I successfully managed to recover several HDs that were already trashed, and they still serve well since then. This all without any data loss. After using those undelete programs it's probably too late, though. Anyway, you can try it, even the demo works well (you just have to wait a bit).

Thank you all for your post,i took a long time to understand all the info, any way thank you yksyks: DRevitalize did it for , it found a single sector and went to repair it, check the snapshot, later i will try by Active Hard Disk Monitor to find that  bad sector is gone or not.

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/2218/hjk1.png

Just making sure that it not a fake output by DRevitalize: but all in all this little tool did what i wanted and it ran in Demo version.
It took almost 3frs just to scan a 320 GB EXT HDD, their were a lot of data their, i'll not lie it did fell to the ground and had few band here and their , may be that to contrbuted to bad sectors. Cause my PC 320 WD HDD doen't  have a single bad sector.

But thank you again for showing your interest and time to this post, thank you again " Donation Coder"   rocks.

 :D :D :D

Microsoft's own CheckDisk should help you out with that. It is already included in every Windows version since Win 2000 (if not earlier).

If that one doesn't do it, there is an alternative called 'MHDD'. This is a tool for advanced users, so be warned! With that tool you have a lot of control, including marking bad sectors (so they will not be used anymore). However, to accomplish this it first has to "nuke" all the existing data in a way you will never get it back. MHDD I would recommend as last resort only.

Hello Shade  :)thanks for replying this query: you see i used once to perform a low level format on one of my HDD quite a long time ago.
You also mentioned first i h' to nuke the HDD first before markig bad sector so that they can't be used anymore.

http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/8277/snap1r.png

I wanted a tool that would mark the bad sector so they can't be used, i ran Active Disk Monitor, it did show 54kb of bad sector as red(indicating a bad block) in my EXT HDD: but i dont know wheter it is marked it or not.
So anyother tool that can achieve this, you see i am storing a lot of data in my 320GB EXT HDD and i want to add more : is their anyother tool ,i would be happy if their was one that did the job.  :(

Thank you:

124
Hello folks, i was trying to recover some deleted Wallpapers in my ExtHDD i was using Active Undelete for this, but Recuva too performs equally good at this, Undelete showes few bad sectors, so now i am realising that i do not have a Sector checking software for this, the one that can detect it and mark as red colour which later on the OS would detect it and avoid writing on that particular bad sector.

Hope my problem is understandable.....:)

PS:Can someone suggests me some free as well as paid software for doing this job.

125
hello 4wd , its good to hear from you. i tried ubuntu live cd ,to remove the residual file but on the next reboot to XP i could still see those files in my recycle bin .
Then in my last try i opened Q-dir :from their i could see those files and i proceeded to delete it. What do you know:it got deleted and the recycle bin was completely deleted.
For some reasons i dont know but each time i try to post my problem it gets solved here at this forum . . . .
Nice hearing from you 4wd
