Living Room / Interesting, low-effort, blackmail-esque spam
« on: June 25, 2018, 12:18 AM »
I got an email today from someone named Gaye Boso (first though was literally, "Gay Bozo? Is this a prank?") with the following content:

Subject: Тiсkеt#224466327: <[email protected]> 25-06-2018 02:05:42 Your secret video here

Hi.

Hopefully you actually don't mind my english language sentence structure, considering that i am from Saudi arabia. I toxified your device with a virus and im in possession of your personal info out of your computer system.

It previously was installed on a mature internet page then you have picked the online video and clicked on it, my application quickly got into your computer.

After that, your webcamera captured you flying solo, in addition i caught a footage that you've seen.

Just after a little while it also picked up all of your device contact info. In case you need me to wipe out your all that i have - transfer me 500 eu in bitcoin it is a crypto. It is my account transfer address - 1Eqp....QuYW [edited to hide full address]

Now you have 28hours. to produce a decision As soon as i will get the transfer i am going to wipe out this footage and every thing thoroughly. Otherwise, you should be sure that this evidence would be submitted to your buddies.

This reminds me of the old "honor system virus" and I can't help but have a similar feeling of amusement plus some bewilderment about this one.

Also amusing was Gmail trying to be helpful with one-click auto-responses: "I accept the terms," "No worries, thanks for the update," and "I'm not interested."

And another interesting detail is it was sent to an email address that, if memory serves me correctly, I created specifically for a parking garage a couple years ago when traveling to Seattle. So it seems there's been a data breach of some sort, or they sold my data. I checked haveibeenpwned.com and it doesn't have any results for the address in question.

Anyway, I thought some of the rest of you here might get a kick out of this ridiculous spam. :D

Living Room / Beware of punycode phishing attempts
« on: June 18, 2018, 05:10 PM »
This is probably considered old news, but it's some information I just discovered and haven't found any references to punycode on DC, so I thought I'd post about it here.

Punycodew was created to help protect against phishing attacks where certain unicode characters in different languages look the same as letters from the roman alphabet but are in fact different. Punycode tries to avoid this problem by converting domains with unicode characters to what might appear to the average person to be a somewhat random mishmash of ASCII letters and numbers. However, there is a flaw in its design such that it doesn't always work, leaving you vulnerable to phishing attacks after all.

Check this article for more information: https://fraudwatchinternational.com/expert-explanations/punycode-phishing-part-1/

If you click the following link and your browser shows something that looks like "apple.com" in the address bar, then your browser is vulnerable to this attack vector.

Here's an example of what it looks like from a vulnerable browser:

Developer's Corner / How to get started with Python and OpenCV?
« on: April 26, 2018, 08:17 PM »
[EDIT] Originally posted in this thread: Dice analyzer machine project before being split off into its own thread. [/EDIT]

This is slightly off-topic so if you'd like me to start a new thread I'll do that, but...

I've been toying with an idea to write a little utility that would need to analyze a few words/numbers on the screen (or from a screenshot) and then make a decision and emulate some keyboard input based on that. The thing that's holding me back is that I'm concerned it will take me much more time and effort writing the utility than it would save me from just manually doing the thing I want to automate.

Do you have a recommendation or suggestion or ideas on the relative ease or difficulty it would be for someone like me who is familiar with coding but never really used Python or OpenCV before to get started on extracting data (essentially OCR with a very clear font) from an image?

I can go into more specific details if you'd like but I was attempting to keep this short to prevent myself from derailing this thread too far.

PBOL / Docked Mode is broken, needs more love
« on: April 19, 2018, 05:04 PM »
The current docking mode is broken in v2.03.

Here's what the current floating window looks like:

Here's what the docked window looks like:

I have it set to automatically resize, but it obviously doesn't.

I really wanted to revive this thread requesting a 3rd docking option (always visible, don't reserve space) because I want PBOL to have the minimal docked interface without the title bar and menu bar and I also want it to remain on top of other applications (which is already an option). And ideally I want to be able to have more customization over the dock position so it isn't just snapped to the center of whatever side of the screen it's docked to.

And it would be nice if you added a docking toggle to the context menu for both the window itself and the tray icon. I forgot that docking was set to auto-hide and the app kind of got lost for a while as I tried to figure out how to get it to display again.

Developer's Corner / Ludum Dare 41: April 20th-23rd, 2018
« on: April 06, 2018, 07:28 PM »
Ludum Dare 41 is coming up in just two weeks.

It has been three years since I last participated in any Ludum Dare event (LD32), and I'm gearing up to try my hand at it once again. But this time as a team effort!

Right now you can submit theme suggestions for the next day or so, after which the Theme Slaughter will begin. I'll likely post more details to this thread as we get closer to the start (and end) of the event.

Feel free to discuss any aspect of LD41 in this thread, including any games you might try out once the event has completed.
