General Software Discussion / Strange Firefox Error:
« on: December 13, 2007, 10:48 PM »
I've never seen a Firefox error like this before. Does anyone have any ideas what it means?

Living Room / PixelJunk Monsters - A Tower Defense Game for PS3
« on: December 06, 2007, 02:19 PM »
From Q-Games comes a PlayStation Network game on PS3 called PixelJunk Monsters; a TD game meant to appeal to the Japanese culture.

Everyone here at Q-Games loves real-time strategy games, from Warcraft through to Command & Conquer and Company Of Heroes, etc., but the Japanese public simply don’t buy that genre yet. So one thing I really wanted to do with Monsters is take the simple RTS concept of building and researching and having base defenses (a concept that has been used in Warcraft tower-defense mods and more recently in its Flash incarnations) and wrap it all in a completely different style and mode of gameplay that the Japanese public (and hopefully the West too, of course!) would really get into.

RTS’s are historically controlled by a roving cursor (either a mouse, or an analogue controller) and right from the start I decided to take that away and replace it with a cute character you control. You run around as this little defender-of-the-forests type chap, collecting money and building defensive towers along the paths to your base. You can only build towers where we have placed trees in the stages, which gave us enormous control over the design and balancing of each map. As a result we have over 20 very different stages, all of which are unique and addictive to play.

Another major help in the design was the addition of gems that the monsters sometimes drop; using these gems you can research more advanced towers, or upgrade existing ones. If you like though, you can upgrade existing towers by doing a little rain-dance-type performance in front of them too. The longer you dance, the more powerful the towers become!

General Software Discussion / Adobe Reader has a trojan?
« on: December 03, 2007, 08:55 PM »
I just turned on my wife's (Dell) laptop and the Dell Support center told me it didn't have the latest Adobe Reader plug-in for IE. So I had it take me to Adobe's website and clicked the install button and it began downloading.

As it was downloading the McAfee Security popped up saying there was a trojan in SGC (SGC15.exe), which was in the temporary files being downloaded by Adobe.

Does anyone else have information on this? Or even what SGC is?

Screenshot Captor / Cropping broke my image and Undo didn't fix it
« on: October 18, 2007, 01:14 PM »
Hi mouser,

I was working on an image in Screenshot Captor, making text boxes and arrows and things, and decided I wanted to crop the image.

Well, silly me, I'm used to every other image editing software in existence in that you select the crop tool before selecting the area to crop. So I clicked crop and it cropped the entire image to the last selected area, which was a text box I was working on.

"Oh noes!" I said to myself, "What have I done?" Thankfully, I'm a semi-intelligent lifeform and I remembered about the powerful Undo feature.

I quickly pressed Ctrl-Z and got the image back, but something was very, very, VERY wrong!!!11eleventyone

The text box that the image had been cropped to was now in the top left corner of the image. That's no problem, I could just move it back to it's old position without much effort. But that wasn't the only problem! :'(

All the other text boxes and arrows were gone! And no amount of undo would bring them back. They're dead and they're not coming back.  :'( :'( :'(

Please remove this gross and negligent behavior from Screenshot Captor or else Cody gets it!

DC Gamer Club / Counter-Strike Fun
« on: October 18, 2007, 12:13 AM »
Wordzilla recently got a server that he's using for a dedicated DC IRC server, as well as some other things. One of those other things is Counter-Strike. The game is free and Wordzilla has the download on his server. Come to the IRC channel or send Wordzilla a PM for information on where to download the client as well as the password to join the servers.

Once you get it installed, launch the game and click Find Servers, then go to the Favorites tab and select Add Server. Enter in the following details:

As you can see, there are actually twelve different maps being hosted. Each one will need to be entered manually. Here's the list of all current maps being hosted.

We've had some fun already playing the game. We've had mouser, hamradio, scancode, jgpaiva, Josh, mitzevo, and others play. Come join the fun! Below are some screenshots.

I wonder who is behind these doors?

Counter-Strike - Deozaan Waiting.png
You were warned! It's me, waiting to ambush!

For those of you interested, the way we got Cody and my Deozaan Inside logo in the game was through using a custom decal. The instructions are kind of puzzling at first, but we just used a program called Easy Decal to convert an image to a decal. Then you need to rename the decal to tempdecal.wad and put it in your cstrike directory, overwriting any other tempdecal.wad you may have in there. But you're not finished. This is the most important part. You need to make the tempdecal.wad read-only so it isn't overwritten when you start the game. And there you have it!

EDIT: Added link to IRC channel.
