I remember seeing this when Win7 first came out.  In fact, I used it once to help a friend.  But I lost it  :( >:(.

There's a way to install a lower version of Windows from an Ultimate CD.  Actually, the tip worked both ways.  Basic premise was to copy the CD files to a hard drive, modify one (1) particular file, then create an ISO on a new CD and run the install.  Of course, the proper key is required for the version you are installing.

My sailing friend headed out to see his SO this evening.  He took along my Ultimate CDs, 32-bit and 64-bit.  His lady's laptop locked up on her, and he couldn't cure it over the phone (she's somewhat less than technically patient  ;)).  He created a recovery disc when they bought her laptop, but may not be able to find it.  And those recovery discs don't always work as advertised - I've had two (2) that failed, and have heard of others.  So I loaned him the CDs I bought, with the understanding that he'd use the key on her laptop.

But I think he'll need to do the correction thing in order for them to work.  I've mentioned before that my short-term memory - say five (5) to ten (10) years - ain't what it used to be, and it's failing me now in finding the aforementioned instruction .

So the question is, does anyone have a link to that instruction, or perhaps know how to accomplish the kinda/sorta downgrade?

Folk, my sailor is thinking about implementing a sailing forum.  Ouch :'(!

Last forum software I implemented was phpBB(?) several years ago.  I do not recall that being a particularly pleasant experience  :o, although the unpleasantness may have been due to the commissioner, not the software.

So, what would you suggest for such a task?  Needs to be low maintenance, novice friendly, reasonably (?!?) capable.  I'll be installing it, but an office admin will be doing day-to-day maintenance as required.

(Personally, I like the look of this forum (), but I've gathered (incorrectly?) that it is relatively high maintenance.)

Seems as though I saw reference to such a while back.  Thought it was here, but haven't found it  :(.

I'm looking for an application or script that will identify all unused  :o pages on a Website.  Something like a reverse site map  :-\.  This could be done with a site map, I suppose, but it would be a very time-consuming process, I fear .

Any of you folk know of such?  Or, perhaps, a reasonably speedy method to accomplish that end?

Ok, folk, I'm not certain this one exists, but I'll ask, just in case.

I'm using several duplicated software items on each machine.  These are mostly [PIM] databases and note-taking apps.  I need a way to keep them concurrent on each machine.  Right now, I use Syncless to replicate changes to a different data folder and to a USB key.  That works well for one (1) machine.

However, when I'm using the same software on two (2) or more machines ... let's take MyInfo as an example.

MyInfo creates .mio files, with .mib backups.  The process mentioned works well.  But when I'm actively using MyInfo on two (2) or more machines, I need a way to merge the different files so that all data, from each machine, is preserved.

Let's say I've added a new article on machine A, and copied several Web pages on machine B.  On both machines, this was copied to daily.mio.  Now I need a way to merge the two (2) daily.mio files so that the resultant daily.mio contains all the data from both machines.  Might be able to do it with WinMerge, but this needs to be an automated process.  What I need is a kind of cross between WinMerge and Syncless.  Dunno that I've ever seen such a beastie.

Any ideas?

No, creating a separate file for each machine is impractical.  Daily.toshiba.mio, daily.gw.mio, and daily.gw2.mio could be created, but each would have to be loaded and updated on each machine - a maintenance nightmare I'd prefer not to encounter- but a bigger downside would be that now I'd have to search three (3) files for information that should ideally be contained in one (1).  In addition, I'd have to triple the MyInfo file loading on each machine, which would end up being a resource dilemma.

I looked at SyncBackSE, but I don't thimk it'll do this on a file level any more than Syncless does.  Syncless does directories, and while it's a bit more flexible, SyncBackSE does the same.  None of the backup software to which I have access seems to cover this, either.

What would be the first thing(s) you load on a new system?

Just got a new laptop, a Toshiba Satellite, Intel i7 CPU, Nvidia GT540M GPU, 6G RAM, ~700G HD.  While I need to get it active, I'm not in a time crunch - an unusual situation for me  ;D.

Since time is not hypercritical this time around, I intend to plan my initial installs.  That got me to wondering what others consider essential for system initialization.  (I will disable UAC.  Single user, allegedly knowledgeable, I just don't feel a need for it, although I could be persuaded otherwise.)  I'll partition the drive, make ~200-250 G C:\ for the OS, the rest for an E:\ data drive.

My initial load will be
  • Comodo & Revo install trackers
  • CintaNotes (for quick tagable notes)
  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • Apache
  • Microsoft Security Essentials
  • Comodo firewall (maybe, haven't decided yet  :-\)
  • Libre Office (don't use it much, but need to have it handy)
  • Karen Kenworthy's Directory Printer
  • Swift To-Do List
  • All My Notes (mostly for some history notes and for avoidance of past foibles)
  • Syncless
  • RollBackRX (adjunct to system restore points

Other stuff will come to mind, but that's my initial list.  I haven't decided whether to install imaging/backup software, since recent experience has show. me a certain futility in that venue.  I'm also uncertain as to graphics software:  needs to be something vector capable.

As mentioned, though, I'm curious what you would consider an initial load?  Maybe you can cure me of some bad habits  :tellme:?

Edit
Meant to ask what you use for a software kvm.  I was not particularly happy with MaxiVista, had a bit of trouble getting Synergy+ to work, so I've been using Input Director - it works, kinda, sorta.  Maybe I need to go back and hammer on Synergy+?  Or is there something else out there that I've just not seen?
