Hi Mouser,  I hope all is well.  Sorry I haven't been on the forums much lately...  "Life" has been keeping me pretty busy.

Here are a couple feature request / ideas for Screenshot Captor.  (or maybe these are already possible?)

1.  Set default style for Arrows / Callouts:  I don't really care for the bulky red.  I'd rather If mine defaulted to a slim gray or black with smaller font in the textbox...

2. Repeating:  It would be nice if "Arrow Mode" was sticky.   i.e. So I can do multiple arrows or callouts without having to click the Arrow Icon on the Toolbar each time.  (Maybe SSC could stay in Arrow Mode until I either choose another tool, or press Esc?)

3. Quick Typing:  It would be nice if I could click-n-drag to create the arrow, then immediately start typing text to add a callout window to the arrow.  (i.e. So I don't have to click in the "Edit Arrow Text" text box each time...  The box should automatically become active after creating an arrow.)

So the work flow for creating three callouts would be:
   Press Arrow Tool Icon...
   Click-n-drag...
   Type the text...
   Click-n-drag...
   Type the text...
   Click-n-drag...
   Type the text...
   Press Esc.

Thanks for considering these :)

Google Boomerang / Any chance for a Translator Boomerang update?
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:14 PM »
Hi Mouser,

I hope all is well.  I was hoping there might be a chance for a feature request RE Translator Boomerang...
In addition to the humor-factor involved with boomeranging translations, this tool also helps me create phrases that are likely to translate correctly.  (i.e. if the bommeranged phrase still makes sense, then the translated version of it is more likely to make sense.  I get the translated version from the "Debug Info" tab.  As shown in the image below, some of the Spanish characters are not correct.  Can this be fixed?  Or maybe I can fix it via my computer font settings??  IDK.

Thoughts?
Thanks.

My thought here is that CHS would automatically monitor clipboard contents, and if the contents meet certain criteria, apply a template.
For example, if I'm pasting the (wildcard) string "http://i.imgur.com/*.png"  then CHS would enclose the URL in the appropriate form syntax.
bracket "img" <clip> bracket "/img"

Obviously this is related to my sImgur request for Skwire :)

Screenshot Captor / Best Imgur uploader?
« on: November 24, 2012, 10:26 PM »
Does anyone know of an uploader for sending from SSC to Imgur, that is non-intrusive?
I'd like it to send the screenshot, put the url on the clipboard, then unload itself.

Just noticed that RWIE is a Bits Du Jour up comming deal

Highly recommended for folks that like to do their own custom icons or icon sets.

In case anyone doesn't know the connection--the developer, Vlastimil, is also a long-time DC Member  :P

General Software Discussion / How can I batch decompile icon files?
« on: October 14, 2012, 12:45 PM »
It seems I've become obsessed with collecting Windows Icons (and icon sets).  I guess it's a hobby.
There are some pretty cool free sets out there on the web...  This weekend I realized that the motherload of icons is right inside my own Windows operating system...

I use Total Commander (not free)to filter out all the DLLs in my C: Drive, then one of the user-created TC plugins (free) lets me filter out the DLLs that have icons in them.
I use Nirsoft IconsExtract (free) to extract the icons.  There were nearly 8000 of them, and many are quite nice!
I then use another TC plugin to group the icons by whether or not they have hi-rez components (1167 do, lots of duplicates, though).

What I'd like to do now is make them so that they all have the same components:  32 bit, 256x256, down to 16x16, and get rid of the ugly low-bit ones.
I'm finding that Windows has a hard time displaying them in a consistent way....  If I open a window in large thumbnail view, some of the icons will appear large, but others are small.  I can only assume that Windose is preferring a smaller 32 bit over a larger 8 or 4 bit (?).  Anyway, I found that IcoFX (free old version) will let me bulk convert images to ICOs.  AND... It will let me "convert" from ICO to ICO.  Since it lets you decide your own bit depth and sizes, I'm able to make my set uniform.  UNFORTUNATELY IcoFX seems to do this by taking the largest embedded PNG and re-sizing it to the different dimensions.

Note how the top (pre-conversion) one is sharper than the bottom.  This is especially noticeable on the 16px one, were the original actually has a separate, low-detail version of the artwork, but the bottom one is an anti aliased smear of the larger image.

So the question:  How do I get all of those ugly 4 and 8 bit sub-cons out of there?

OR... Is there any software (think "free") that will actually convert like IcoFX does, but use the original size for the conversion?  (e.g. use the original 16x16 if there is one, otherwise, shrink the larger one).
Does that make sense?

I've been a long time fan of Mike Lin's excellent Cross Hair app http://www.mlin.net/CrossHair.shtml
I find that about 80% of the time, I'm using it as a reading guide on a webpage or on a CHM help file for an app.  When this is the case, I want it to be present only on the given window, not the entire screen.
In the image http://i.imgur.com/KJiRl.png I'm reading item #2 in this help file.  I'd like the reading guide (which I've drawn as a gray rectangle) to be associated with this window so that it is only visible over the given window.  If I click away from the window (see bottom of image) to work on another window, I want the reading guide to stay in place with the assigned (now inactive) window.  It would be like a placeholder for my reading, but also would stay out of my way.

Does that make sense and/or seem like a good idea?

Screenshot Captor / Feature idea: Smart preselect...
« on: February 26, 2012, 01:28 PM »
While using Object capture mode, it occurred to be that one or more of the smaller sub-items that SSC was "offering" to select (the stuff inside the window) are also things that I will probably end up needing to Select so that I can apply image effects...
Why not just let SSC "remember" what these things are. Then, after the object is captured and flattened into an image, SSC can have the corresponding part of the image Pre-Selected for me...

DC Website Help and Extras / Hi-rez images of the Cody Bird Mascot?
« on: February 24, 2012, 02:37 PM »
I know I remember seeing some, but can't find them now...
Thought it would be fun to Incorporated them into a custom Screenshot Captor mask/frames.
Especially if Cody was doing the "Vanna White" routine, where he's standing beside the screenshot, "presenting" it :)

Screenshot Captor / Any "hand model volunteers" out there?
« on: February 19, 2012, 02:50 PM »
I attempted making another "hand frame."  My technique is still not perfect.  Will try to attach the PNG and MASK files in a zipped folder, and also a sample.

One problem is that I have ugly hands.  And my camera is not that great either.

If we have any nice-handed photographers out there, please consider donating your image for a SSC mask!

Screenshot Captor / Feature request: Sizable canvas.
« on: February 18, 2012, 07:08 PM »
Like this:
Screenshot - 2_18_2012 , 4_57_14 PM.png

Or maybe it's already possible in some fashion?

Related to this request, is that if I drag another picture onto the original one, and it overlaps the edges of the canvas, then SSC should (optionally) increase the size of the canvas, rather than cropping off the overlapping parts...

Did that even make sense?  It made sense in my head.

Am referring to where the blue "But mostly here" arrow is pointing.
Is it possible to have an "add your own" in the same way that you do for clipart and frames?
Screenshot - 2_18_2012 , 11_15_36 AM.png
I'd like to use a "Tag" shape like the yellow one.
The ability to shape/bend lines would also be cool ...

Screenshot Captor / Reproducible crash :)
« on: February 18, 2012, 12:45 PM »
I always garner an evil bit of schadenfreude when I manage to break software.   :P
I was trying to capture an image of the "You've captured an Object. Now what?" tool that I referenced in the resent "Interface Options" forum discussion.

To reproduce the crash (I guess it's a crash--not really sure):
1. Activate an Object Grab either by Hotkey, Tray Icon right-click, or by the menu item in SSC.
2. Ctrl+Click in the Red Box, then the "You've captured an Object. Now what?" tool pops up.
3. Before choosing one of the 4 options or closing the dialog, bring up the SSC Main Window. (By clicking its icon on the Windows Taskbar, or by hotkey, if there is a hotkey assigned to 'Toggle Visibility.')

The Systray icon stays red because SSC thinks it's still in mid-capture, but the "You've captured an Object. Now what?" tool is closed, so you can't complete the capture.  SSC has to be restarted.
Am working with v3.00.00 on Vista...  Perhaps others can try on different versions of Windows...

Screenshot Captor / "Hands Holding" mask/frame combo...
« on: February 13, 2012, 08:41 PM »
Here we go:
hands holding small.png
It might not be immediately useful, but it's fun!
Save this: http://i.imgur.com/OXZ5N.jpg in your SSC/Frames/Masks folder.
Then save this: http://i.imgur.com/BEXuF.png in your SSC/Frames/Frames folder.

Be sure to click the "Rescan Dirs" button.  Then apply the mask and save the image, then apply the frame (i.e. hands).
 :)

MODERATOR EDIT: See further down on page for post by mouser of NEW download and modified instructions for this that works on Screenshot Captor v4.

What I mean, is to have the menu, toolbar, and dialog icons in SC all reference portions of an external "buttons.png" image.   That way users could create and contribute different icon sets.  I think there is a lot of room for improvement (visually speaking).  For example different images for the different types of "Grabs" on the Capture menu, or the different types of Borders on the main toolbar.
Given the high number of items, I imagine you'd want more than one group of images.  Maybe "MeniItemImages.png," "ToolbarItemImages.png," and "DialogItemImages.png." The dimensions of the pngs would be 16 pix high* (16* number of items) wide.  Here is an image of my work space for the skin I made for xplorer2 http://i.imgur.com/aCC4F.png  If this is something you're interested in, I'll volunteer to put your current images into groups.  Those groups would be part of the download package for SC, and then folks can create custom versions at their leisure.

Site/Forum Features / Stop notifications for a given thread?
« on: February 11, 2012, 01:13 PM »
Near the top of the screen is a link to "Show new replies to your posts."  I like to use that feature, but I'd also like to stop watching certain forum threads.  Is that possible?  I can't find the option for it.

Screenshot Captor / Imgur Uploader for Chrome only, pretty cool.
« on: February 10, 2012, 08:10 PM »
If you're a Google Chrome user (the browser, I mean) and use Imgur for your image hosting, you might try it.  It's more light weight than ZUploader.
Google search "Chrome Web Store," once there, search for "Imgur Uploader."

It stays in the "Send to" area of your context menu for image files.

Since SC utilizes an actual file browser on the left of the main window, you can right-click one of the images and access the 'Send to' menu from right inside the SC main work area :)
Also it works from within Windows Explorer, xplorer2, etc.
