Living Room / Re: UK Riots: Have you been affected?
« on: August 12, 2011, 05:46 AM »
@Carole : I entirely agree with your analysis.
I was born and brought up near Lewisham (South East London) and knew well that area, also Brixton as well as the other areas affected such as Hackney and Tottenham.

When I hear politicians talk about "mindless criminality" it just makes me sick. Do they have any idea of what it's like to live, or spend one's whole life, in these or similar areas ?
Criminality for sure, but not mindless, criminality has causes, it is not causeless.

General Software Discussion / Re: Speech to Text Software?
« on: August 11, 2011, 06:31 AM »
@Ren : there is this strange thing that may be able to do something near to what you are looking for. I haven't tried it out myself yet (50 + mb download) but I will do as it looks fun to play with.

And check this site.

And then there's this the blurb says : "Cool C writes at the speed of speech and is always ready to read. Cool C is the fastest and easiest way to get your thoughts down on paper .... Just talk to Cool C and your words will be typed as you talk. When you are done, click READ and Cool C will read everything typed back to you."

The gui is vile beyond words (joke) and it doesn't seem possible to get a key for the trial, but I thought I'd bring it to your notice anyway.  ;)

Living Room / Re: Film vs. Movie?

Quote : "The origin of the name "film" comes from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) has historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, moving picture, photo-play and flick. A common name for film in the United States is movie, while in Europe the term film is preferred. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema and the movies." Wikiyouknowwhat.

I think "movies" is an American term, whereas "films" is more UK English - may be wrong though.

There's also the well-known FileMon from Sysinternals which has more options.

Superboyac, have a look at this one : File monitor.

Edited out - made a mistake !  ;D

If you don't like NirSoft apps or others suggested here, then maybe this would help : What changed ?

Or this : Diskhash file compare tool ?

260
superboyac : I use simply a minus sign " - " in front of the folder name, the marked folders still keep their alphabetical order.

Peerblock ?
hosts file ?
The Proxomitron ?

Use K-Meleon as browser ... ?   ;D

262
Try these gems from Nirsoft :

Opened files view
My event viewer

You would have to add them to your Start folder.

Great - I don't feel so alone  ;D

(Just got back from my siesta...)

I don't have a FB account, nor Twitter, in fact I don't even own a mobile phone. I have my own domain, so my emails and all are on "my" disk space.
Some very interesting comments here, thanks guys.

264
The title says it all - am I all alone with my little PC and my files all here with me ?

I wonder if others feel the same, maybe misplaced, distrust of the cloud ?

265
There is also Ixquick (which has been talked about here before I think) - it's fast, private and more easily configurable than Scroogle - I like it !

Read the About page for all details.

General Software Discussion / Re: recommend backup soft?
« on: July 09, 2011, 01:21 PM »
I can highly recommend (as I use it for quite some time now) this very good but unjustly little-known backup solution :Uranium Backup.

There are seven versions from freeware to complete pro.

PS Wasn't there a recent post or thread about "necroposting" ?

General Software Discussion / Re: graphs software

Yes - don't know why I didn't post the Veusz homepage ...

However, there do seem to be problems with the download links both on the home page and at Softpedia.

Have you looked at yoshinoGraph ?

270
Another viewer with only command line options ! Mycview ... could be useful ...

271
Following the link in the quote in oblivion's post I ended up here : Puller.

Now that's an interesting and useful program but which, I'm sure, someone here could rebuild in another way with even more options ...  ;)

272
Oh no ! ... don't tell me someone else is controlling my computer ... ?  :o

273
Errmm ... yes, maybe, but I still don't know what's best to do - or how to do it ... :D

274
I suppose you could try removing it to see what breaks. But for 51Mb in disk space savings, it hardly seems worth messing with.

Yes true, but (as per the screen capture) aren't the 2047 mbs allocated and unusable for anything else or is this just my ignorance showing through again ...?  ;)

Thanks 40hz.

Can't remember ...  :-[
