I just tested it and indeed it works when you save/load as .XML.
All formatting, images and other html-ish elements are saved

While there is no Insert->Image menu, you can copy/paste images from your web browser or anywhere else, and it will save them correctly.

One little glitch i found: if you try to paste an image into an empty document, you have to hit <enter> (or insert another character) for it to show up in the document, other than that it works fine, here is a screenshot of my test, this document is an image pasted from a google images search on "guitar tabs" and i put some lyrics next to it (not really of that song ;)) saved the document as .XML, reloaded it, and it showed up just fine!

So if you want to be able to load html webpages, you could try pasting them into your document (and maybe make some minor adjustments) then save it as .xml, which you will be able to load correctly later.

I'm afraid i'll be able to do little about the html loading since the wxWidgets RichEdit control (currently) doesn't really support it (only saving). However, it will save and load perfectly fine in it's own .XML format. You can paste images of guitar tabs etc into the document (it should handle images just fine in xml, though i can't test at the moment) and add your lyrics under it. Click file->save as... and save it as an .xml document.
Then later you can load it and it "should" show up right. (Don't take my word on it, like i said i can't really test it at this point)

Ok, it's finished.

Windows download: here
Linux binary + source code: here

[edit]
There are newer versions available! Some people seem to be still downloading 1.0 from this thread. Please check other messages in this thread or visit http://linkerror.com...cgi?section=download to get the latest version.
[/edit]

If you want it on another platform other than windows or linux, you'll have to recompile (makefiles for various platforms included, though it may need some editing)

The source is really a hack for the wxwidgets richedit sample, so the source is very crude, and in only one .cpp file.

I hope it does what you need it to do.

A screenshot:
bpmnotepad.jpg

Basics:
  • Hit the play button in the toolbar and scrolling will start.
  • Hit the space bar to pause/resume the scrolling while active.
  • You can use hotkeys ctrl+0..9 to quickly adjust scrolling speed.
  • You can use the textfield in the title bar to enter a custom scrollspeed number.
  • Other than that it works as a normal text editor.
  • Use format->Font or the blue A icon in the toolbar (select text first)

Note : The value in the speed text field is how many milliseconds it takes in between scrolling one line
PS: Currently the scrolling toggles (pause or scroll) with the spacebar button, if you'd like this to behave differently, where you have to continiously tap to scroll, i can implement it or add it as a setting/option later, i just figured that this method would be less intensive in the tapping, and thus maybe easyer.

I'll put up a website with documentation later.

I hope it helps!

529
It's almost done, most of it works already, but i need to run to the grocery store now, i'll finish the rest of it when i get back, give me a few hours yet ;)

530
Making it scroll a variable amount at the tap of the spacebar would actually be way easyer to implement than a record/playback feature. Working on it ;)

531
The idea I was having is, the first time you record the scrolling speed by hitting the spacebar in a beat, the program will adjust accordingly, then you save it along with the recorded speed/beat data, and later you'd be able to play back with the variable speed(s) in the way you recorded it. When you're actually using it while playing an instrument you'd be playing back a pre-recorded scrollspeed.

532
I hope they don't fart.  ;)

533
Hi, Jimi!
Welcome to the site!

It's an interesting idea. Maybe I'll see what I can do if my time permits it, and if nobody else beats me to it. (Please don't let this keep anyone else from volunteering!)

I think the hardest part would be to fine-tune the scrolling to the BPM. (eg: how do you know how fast scrolling should be at a certain BPM rate?) Maybe this can be an adjustable variable setting or something.

534
Ok,... i guess they wouldn't notice the screenshot section in the menu :)

535
Thanks for the suggestions, mouser.
I updated the front page to include a 'key features' bullet list, and an explanation of how exactly the changelog/todo generation works. I hope that helps!

536
Looking good!

537
Go ahead and do it,
I'm not really interested since I need mine to be cross platform.

538
Just a quick little todo app I wanted for myself.
I wanted a todo application that would generate todo.txt/changelog.txt files for my projects automagically, and keep track of a relation between changelog and finished todo items, starting from a plain hierarchical todo gui which i could use to just organise my thoughts. I know that there is a thousand and one todo applications out there already, which is why I was a bit hesitant to start this project, I searched around and tried various todo applications out there, but none did what I wanted them to do, or they did too much. The vast majority seemed to be suffering from heavy feature bloat. I just wanted something very simple and minimal that did what I want it to do. So I eventually broke down and made this, I thought I would share.

I wouldn't call it a finished product just yet, but it's usable.

Known issues:
  - When adding a new project or task, or when marking one as completed, the
treeview will refresh and expand all nodes (instead of remembering which ones you had open or closed.)

  - On linux: when moving the main window to a different workspace/desktop new
dialogs do not appear on the correct workspace.

  - When the changelog text field is left emtpy they do not show up in the
changelog treeview when marked as completed. (they are however written to the txt files using the summary text)

I'll get around to fixing these some day ;)

I made a silly little web page for it, which is where you can go download it:

...and you can then use your BIOS boot menu (usually F8) to choose the right disk when booting

IF your BIOS supports it. Better check first.
Many older BIOSes (expecially motherboards with IDE only, no sata) don't let you switch between disks without changing master/slave jumpers on your hard drives, etc,...

540
I like this layout of projects/ folders/ files. Great change.

541
it's possible.
there are however quite a number of ways to do it.

I'm not sure if the ubuntu installer will build your grub boot menu correctly by default or install grub in the correct harddrive's mbr, so it may or may not require some hacking around.

If your system just starts up to XP with no boot menu after the ubuntu install, boot from the live cd, and mount your ubuntu partition, and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Yippee, y2k all over again.
Will we ever learn to make date-critical software flexible enough?

I guess not, because, who expects to have time- as we know it, disappear or change.
What will the software world do when tomorrow they decide to remove the month February from the calendar?

Stranger things have happened.

I think I'm a bit confused about what exactly you're asking,... do you want to

A) Sort the programs that start up with windows (seems unlikely)
B) Sort the programs in the start menu (rightclick thing would fix that)
C) Show all programs in the start menu without their folders, alphabetically, without having to manually drag them out?
or D) something else

Maybe, please, clarify a bit.

Personally I think that's a good thing

It's not when someone blames a bug in gnome on 'linux'. That makes baby Linus cry. ;)

<edit>
... and what's even worse is that he credits Ubuntu to 'manage the cpu' so it doesn't freeze at 100%, while this is the same with any other gnu/linux distro, since the Ubuntu had nothing to do with this, this is the hard work of the kernel developers.

What strikes me as funny is that he is judging APPLICATIONS and then talking about them as if they are 'LINUX' which is, afaik, a kernel.

i'm wondering if there is something kind of unique about the world of computers. people take software for granted a lot of the time and expect to pay nothing.

This is nothing unique to the world of computers, it's more unique to being an engineer. People don't wonder about why big bridges don't collapse under the weight of all those cars and big trucks that drive over it every day, people don't worry about how ANYTHING technical works, it's just there and who cares about whoever designed it.

I think in this case its more of an "evolution", Gothi[c] didnt seem to mind either

Nope, I don't mind ;) that's maybe because I'm more used to talking on irc, i never was that much of a forum person, hence I just kinda go with whatever way a 'conversation' flows, which seems the most natural thing to do, to me. You don't really tell people to stay on topic in real life either if a conversation gets sidetracked.
