Living Room / swf to gif (or other usable format)
« on: June 01, 2021, 02:46 PM »
Hi all :)

I have a swf file that I need to convert to be usable on a current web page. I can only find flash emulators that open the swf file in a browser and little else (they can't export to animated gif for example(?))
A downloadable software like lightspark does not even install properly or crash (latest version, tried both 32bit and 64bit)

I would think an Adobe product like After Effects would be able to open it and export it to a usable format but even if it does I have no access to Adobe products.

Any ideas?

DC Gamer Club / Stadia Google
« on: March 19, 2019, 01:29 PM »
GS.JPG

Not a gamer but curious to read what you guys at DC think about this, perhaps an interesting topic :)

Onstage at GDC,  Google  CEO Sundar Pichai announced the company’s latest big initiative, taking on the entire gaming industry with a live-streaming service called Stadia that will be launching this year.

The service will let gamers leave their hefty GPUs and expensive systems behind. Pichai says that the service can be used on devices with a Chrome browser and an internet connection. To Google that means Stadia will launch on desktops, laptops, TVs, tablets and phones. The service will work across platforms, so you won’t just be competing with other Stadia users.

Living Room / Canadian adventures
« on: May 18, 2018, 01:04 PM »
Nothing interesting but a lesson in life perhaps. Would expect a lot more from Canada and any so called first world country.

Living in a big city suburb, Toronto suburb, definitely not rural. Phone service is down on several streets for 5 days and counting. Internet (DSL) is sporadic at best. Somehow internet, presumably because it uses 1 pair of wires not 2 is not 100% affected even though the phone company rep cites the issue as 'water soaked cable, trying to find location of the soaked cable'  Makes very little sense and the downtime length is down right ridiculous.

Intro:
The Journal is most of all a record keeper, a diary or journal with added benefits of supporting reminders, images, to do lists and free form "doodles".

TheJournal7.png

Who is this app designed for:

Many would benefit since this overlaps a personal information manager with writing tools.

The Good

The tree style categories that support both a calendar or daily journal format or writing kept in a "loose leaf" format which as its name suggest is like a white page.
The possibility to display a day calendar to a page adds flexibility in creating reminders and remembering any writing by date.
There is big emphasis on securing the database including entry encryption, password protection, lock up on minimize. Plus 'extended security' to lock the program after X failed logins.
Plenty of formatting options and support for icons, tables, timers and stop watch.
Word counts, spell check and thesaurus included.
Global or filtered (date, title, category, image description based) search add more usefulness. Search queries can be saved.
Bookmark entries, move between entries based on set dates (eg 1 year ago)
Built in back and restore option, auto save as you type.

Why I think you should use this product

The product seems stable enough to keep records and makes it easy to save your database in any location including cloud drives to share across devices as its license allows this.

Conclusions
The extended trial period makes it very easy to decide if price is worth it and it fits into a user's workflow. It is a well rounded information manager.

General Software Discussion / Windows Explorer crashing
« on: December 10, 2017, 01:13 PM »
Starting a while ago I get Windows Explorer crashing/restarting *most times* when I open an image, save a new file or image in any app, rename a file, when opening Windows Explorer window and similar operations but those are the main ones. System function fine otherwise, and for example exe open fine. During those operations there is a delay and taskbar flashes as if reloading and any open windows explorer window is closed.

Eventviewer shows:

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 10.0.16299.15, time stamp: 0x66e02565

Faulting package-relative application ID:

No Windows or driver updates happened just when this started and I don't recall updating any apps either.

ESET online, Defender, Malwarebytes...all fine.
Sfc, chkdsk at boot....no errors
Drivers are updated as far as I can see (I used Snappy Driver Installer to check)

Googling 'windows explorer crashing' more or less end up at a page like https://answers.micr...53-893a-dd8cd4b4db00 I have done those listed (except since I get no sfc errors I didn't continue lower in the page).
There are some mentions of indexing and network drives but those dont apply to this machine.

Any ideas?

General Software Discussion / Downloadable Office trial
« on: December 04, 2017, 01:36 PM »
Does a MS Office trial still exist? It certainly used to - and not just at Technet or MSDN - but Googling 'Office trial' seem to all now end up at Office 365 pages, at least the handful or two results that I clicked on. The official office.com site requires a key to install or reinstall. Can one not download Office trials for a self built computer anymore?

Living Room / Routing issue?
« on: July 14, 2017, 06:05 PM »
So around a month ago I noticed I can't get to DC and another site (and a handful more that I have discovered since)

My first thought was my connection, but only two (at the time) were inaccessible
Second thought DNS issue but why affecting two+ different sites?
After noticing that DC (and those other(s)) ARE accessible through a VPN I thought may be my IP is banned but then why would DC or a few unrelated sites ban my IP.
So finally I do a traceroute to DC (and another site) and 8 hops from me just after my ISP's addresses I get the dreaded ??? ??? ???

Other than calling me ISP does any body have any thoughts? I am afraid such a routing issue won't be solved by my clueless ISP, they are not going to check what is likely a routing issue beyond their servers, not even their own probably.

(In the past days I am checking DC through Opera VPN and Windscribe with no problem)

General Software Discussion / Unknown packet
« on: April 06, 2017, 09:28 AM »
Hope someone here can help decipher something, I randomly ran Nirsoft's smartsniff on this laptop I am now, just as a security measure of sorts to check it. One of the captured packets is odd, to me at least.

Code: Text [Select]
  1. ==================================================
  2. Index             : 1
  3. Protocol          : TCP
  4. Local Address     : 192.168.0.126

Just that 00000000 00 randomly once in a while when I leave smartsniff running, to that IP or others that my look up says "Organization: O2 Czech Republic iol.cz"

Any thoughts?

General Software Discussion / Working with excel row and columns
« on: April 07, 2014, 12:21 PM »
Spoiler
Posted this on stackoverflow but my initial question was confusingly worded and by the time I clarified I guess the question got lost in the maze there

I am trying to work with an Excel file (actually using Libreoffice) that is an export of a website content database. Since I am not even sure how to explain the problem I made a small version of what I am trying to do. The real file has many more records of course.

This is what I have:

This is what I need:

Any ideas on how I can do this?

General Software Discussion / Firewalls and LAN
« on: March 26, 2014, 01:37 PM »
I am trying to set up my XP to use internally within the home network, not for file and printer sharing but screen sharing to access the XP desktop (see Teamviewer in next paragraph). My set up is typical, router (Linksys E2000) to computers.

My reasoning for this is mainly to use Teamviewer's LAN feature (I also tested this with Dukto, a LAN file sharing software).

I thought this would be best served with something for XP as opposed to going into the router settings (Mac blocking, etc.) I came across posts that suggested changing the default gateway on the PC to a 'wrong' 0.0.0.0 address and I guess this is ok. But then I thought I would find lightweight firewalls that might be capable of blocking off the internet and leaving other communication open.

Found PrivateFirewall and an old download of Sygate Personal Firewall that would match the needs (lightweight and XP compatible). They have switches to completely turn off the internet but this affects other processes, for example with Teamviewer set to exclusively accept LAN connections PrivateFirewall still blocks it because I think Teamviewer is still triggering a another process (ntskernl?). I have tried to set exceptions based on internal network (all of 192.168.x.x) and make sure every port and/or exe that Teamviewer (and Dukto) supposedly use to "Allow" and still nope.

I suppose I can use bulkier firewalls like Comodo and see, but ... anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

Living Room / Facebook likes? How?
« on: March 11, 2014, 07:53 PM »
Over the last few days I began to notice that the Likes section in my facebook has likes that I didn't like, so to speak. I began to worry that my computer is compromised. I have checked every device* including android phone that I have with one or more of Malwarebytes, Avast and ESET online scanner. After seeing that they are clean (hoping so after using the aforementioned tools) I used the Linux machine to change my facebook password and made sure that I am logged out of Facebook everywhere. One day after doing that I log in again and noticed one of such likes again. After a bit of googling I guess I could have visited a comprised site, iframe hack(?), during that one day but I was logged out of Facebook for that day.

Any thoughts?

General Software Discussion / Cloned software and licensing issues
« on: January 04, 2014, 05:01 PM »
Recently I wrote a review of ShareX (links below) which is a GPL screenshot grab and share software. Days later I also reviewed Lollipic which looked very much like a clone of ShareX. Of course the similarity was too obvious not to mention.
Today I received an email from "ShareX developers" with a request to remove the Lollipic review. The same email included a link to a reddit discussion about another apparent ShareX clone (NeoxScreen, not reviewed by me). The issue had been raised at reddit that at least [emphasis mine] NeoxScreen provides its source code and since ShareX is GPL it is free to copy, clone, fork. However, I don't see a link to the source code at the Lollipic site.

Any thoughts?

General Software Discussion / Log CPU and memory usage
« on: June 18, 2013, 09:08 PM »
Here's a basic question for everybody.

What should I use if I want to log (to a text file) the processes that use the most cpu and ram? Say every 5 minutes a text file is appended with top 5 process names with as much info about the usage as possible.

This is for both XP and 7 computers, something that can be set and forgotten. Then days later I open the log file to check.

Thanks

Living Room / Michel In Guides!
« on: February 07, 2013, 11:24 PM »
A bit of  ;D and

A 28-year-old salesman named Adam Mascall from Luton received a very angry letter through the post from the people at Michelin Guides (i.e, the French restaurant bible universally revered in food circles) after he snapped up the "www.michelinguides.com" domain name for just £6 recently.

Michelin, who mistakenly allowed the domain to expire, then threatened to sue Mascall in a sternly-worded letter as he was infringing on their trademark.

Mascall, however, then wrote back to Michelin and told them that his website was actually "Michel in Guides.com" and began filling the holding page with hilariously photoshopped images of UEFA president Michel Platini in Girl Guides uniforms!

General Software Discussion / Word to html
« on: January 08, 2013, 09:53 AM »
I have googled various terms ("word to html", etc), I want to ask here too.

What's the cleanest or best way to convert word files to html? I am more concerned with retaining tabs, spaces, line breaks than images or shapes.

There is also the issue than some of the word files are in landscape but the html shouldn't be really, so somehow I have push some content down or below (probably manually after conversion?)
