Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: Get current directory
« on: March 15, 2009, 11:41 AM »
I added a wrinkle to Home Folder 1.3.  If you have FavesSA 4.6 or later running with Monitor enabled and press Alt-NumberPadMinus while an application window is active, the complete program path is sent to FavesSA.  If it's not already in the current list, it's added.

I don't know how Windows decides to stick programs in its start menu mru list but it seems like there's no rhyme or reason I can figure out.  This gives manual control to add to the FavesSA list.

The thread made me curious and when I saw the function in AutoIt3 to get the path from the active window I wanted to see if it worked.  I'm starting to like doing these small gizmos.  I sweat blood doing this dumb application launcher thing that I've had on SoftPedia for a couple of years.  I got as many downloads in about 2 months with a program that just opens and closes the optical drive tray!!  Guess there is something to the idea of keeping it simple. :)

Edit: oh yeah, I wanted to mention I updated to version 1.2.  It now calls a function to reduce the memory footprint if running on Win2k or newer. Task manager was showing it around 6 MB on Vista64.  Now shows it < 4 MB.

Home Folder 1.2

that's a nice one there.. check out this post for a similar but mouse-initiated script. :)

That's cool.  I'm thinking esp. since XP doesn't have the built-in Command Prompt thingie like Vista maybe I'll add another hotkey to open one in that folder.  I'll give it a go.

Edit: I updated to 1.1  With this version, additional hotkey Control-NumberPadMinus opens a command prompt.  If the active window is an application window the "home folder" of that app is the current directory.  If it's an explorer folder, that folder should be the current directory for the command prompt.  Seems good on Vista.  I haven't tried it on XP yet though.

I found a function by gafrost called _WinGetPath() on AutoIt3 forum that gets
the path of whatever launched the active window without using the window title.
I used it to create an AutoIt3 app that listens for Shift-NumberPadMinus hotkey
and opens the "home folder" of the active window.

Because it uses WMI I think it's only usable on XP and later.
I call it, imaginatively enough, Home Folder.  :)
Here's the page:
http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html

Seems like it may come in pretty handy. I know I hate opening
shortcuts just to get the Location info(even hovering the mouse
is kind of a pita.)

(It doesn't open a command prompt, but at least in Vista if you
shift-right click in the folder you get the Open Command Window Here.)

It looks good on Vista 32 and 64 bit.  :Thmbsup:

Hmmmmm the startup delay thing makes me think it might be a good idea to have a launcher that gives you a chance to kill all the startups like if you are installing software or trying to put on a service pack where the machine reboots 5 times.  Avoiding all the utilities coming up without having to drag a bunch of icons out of the startup folder.

Then again this is probably already a feature in a bunch of launchers.  But I could add it to rapper.  Just have a MsgBox that times out and if you don't make a choice before the time-out it defaults to either launch or don't launch all the start up stuff(maybe according to setting in a .ini file or something.)

7632
This one is a free AutoIt3 called WinTray.  I'm still using v. 1.0 because it does what I want and I don't like "feature creep" but I guess it's up to 1.6 now:

Yeah, just about any compiled AutoIt3 gets false flagged.  If you go on the AutoIt forum there's a sticky about it.

I don't password it so if you want to decompile the exes with AutoIt decompiler I don't mind.

7634
I think there's some confusion here because it looks like Shades partition was deleted by Paragon Partition Manager but the thread turns into a discussion of Paragon Drive Backup, which is an image backup program.  I have experience with Drive Backup but none with the Paragon Partition Manager.

Coding Snacks / Re: Overlay Folder Icon with Exe icon
« on: March 11, 2009, 07:13 PM »
I'll give it a shot.

iiuyc you are just trying to take an image of a folder and superimpose the image from an exe file's icon in the center and convert it to an icon? Seems like it should be fairly simple with Photofiltre and GreenFish Icon Editor.  Both freeware.

You can search tutorials for Photofiltre but basically you want to load the folder image, then open the exe file's icon image.  Do a "copy" on the exe file's icon, do a "select all" on the folder image, then "insert in" to insert the icon into the folder.  Insert in automatically centers.  If the size isn't right you'd have to resize the selection with commands in the selection menu.  After saving that to a jpg or png file you open it in Greenfish and convert it to icon.

7636
Yep - it was supposed to end on 1st March so if you want a copy grab it quick while you can.

I downloaded it but haven't installed it yet. Anyone know what the difference is between this version and the commercial version?

Basically Paragon Drive Backup Express should be available for download from the Paragon site anytime.  They accept a hotmail address for sending the reg info.  There is even a 64 bit edition if you have Vista64. It's Paragon Drive Backup Personal 9.0 without some of the features.  No folder exclusion, no file only backup etc..   For an image backup of your entire system it's fine.  If you have an external drive you can get smaller backups by copying off big files(like if you have dvd .iso images or big .avi files etc.) to your external, delete them.. then do the backup.

The boot CD afaik is the same as Personal that is Linux based and has USB support.  If your system is hosed, boot the CD and restore from the external USB drive.

I've been using Paragon Drive Backup Personal since v. 8.5 and I've restored with it a few times.  The restore does work. I put Windows 7 beta on and when I got bored with it I just laid the Paragon image back on and my system was the same as when I did the backup.

If they had these Express editions out when I bought 8.5 I probably would have just downloaded the Express.  But if you do a lot of video it's convenient to just exclude folders with huge files to make the backup set smaller without the copy off work-around.

For $40 I ain't complainin' :)

7637
Yes, I plan to clean it up...new icon, basic File, Edit, and Help menus, etc.  I was thinking about renaming it to MediaTotalTimer unless anybody else has a better idea.

Cool.  How about PlayTime for a moniker?

7638
I also have one that's command line oriented.  Not very imaginatively named
Run And Place utilities. It's available for download from this page:

http://www.favessoft.com/downloads.html

It has no graphical or drag & drop or iconinc utility.  The startup program is called rapper.exe which reads a .txt file of params for rap.exe which launches them.  Each program is launched at a specific screen position, width and height. Might be of interest to neat freaks who like every window to be placed and sized just so.

Since it launches one at a time with delays to wait for the window to open so it can be moved and sized, it is in effect a startup delayer of sorts if you put a shortcut with param file in the startup folder.

Also included are window resizers to center a window at a percentage of width and height of the screen res etc..

They are all just little AutoIt3 utils.
Can be handy for .cmd scripts like if you want to open your browser to a specific page and make it's width and height a specific % of screen res. to read an online newspaper or some other thing you read often where the specific size saves you from resizing with the mouse, etc..

7639
Is this all you wanted the application to do?  If so, we'll call it done.  =]

Works for me. You can copy the total to the clipboard so I don't see anything lacking afaic. :)

Edit:  If I could make one small suggestion.. could you use an icon for the exe instead of default ahk icon? If one has a few ahk apps it's hover & hunt with the mouse to find what's what.

Other than that works great.  Drop a folder zips right through all the media files and ignores other flotsam in the folder.  Very cool. :)

7640

Very nice!  Thanks very much. Drag & Drop is even better since it's smoother in Vista64.

7641
Generally I find with the Paragon stuff the Express editions are the freebie to go with. With the proviso that you look over the features comparison on their site.  At least on the imaging backup it's equivalent to the Personal edition without a few features like folder exclusion.

Too many of these other freebie releases I think are for sticking in computer magazines.  Best to get the "permanent" freebie that's on their web site, if it has what you need to do the job.

I notice the Express edition on this one only supports XP and Vista 32 bit whereas you can get a 64 bit version of the Drive Backup Express.

Reading the fine print can be a pita. :)

7642
skwire that would be most excellent.  Anything to avoid data entry into a "time calculator" thingy. :)

7643
Hmmmm looks like if you call the MediaInfo dll and ask for Duration String 3 you get back a string with hh:min:sec.milliseconds playtime and could parse that to split it out to integers.

For an ahk aficionado the rest should be easy :)

Post New Requests Here / Re: Transparent taskbar
« on: March 09, 2009, 01:10 PM »
hmmmm speaking of taskbars, when I make a home-made taskbar out of a desktop folder it's like claw at it with the mouse until you get it to undock and you can size it.  Is there a windows message you can send it to switch to resizable mode?  Sometimes you can claw at that thing for minutes without getting it.  Really annoying.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: I love the Bulk Rename Utility!
« on: March 09, 2009, 01:06 PM »
:hanged:

Hmmmmmmm I've used that for years. FreeCommander has some renaming capacity now but it's not as vast as BRU.

7646
I'm not familiar with xfire, but I'm not into gaming so my ignorance is infinite there. :)  I was just thinking where MediaInfo provides a .dll the play time could be had for each file.  The shell extension would have to get the filenames from the shell or it could just use the Copy to clipboard trick if it was an AHK app, make the dll calls into the MediaInfo library and do the math.  Could even just use a MsgBox to give the results.  Doesn't have to be fancy.

Hours minutes and seconds are just harder to add in your head than decimal.

7647
If you have MediaInfo installed and hover the mouse you can get a tooltip with the play time of the video clip and some other info.  But I've yet to see a shell extension where you can select multiple media files, right click to select a command, and get the total play time.  Even if you drag & drop a bunch of videos onto MediaInfo I don't think there's any option for total play time of all the clips.  Would be very convenient for those of us who like to burn discs full of .avi files or whatnot.

7648
You can get the Express version from the main web site.  I don't know how many features are cut out but I think the main one is it won't delete a partition. But you can always use Cute or another partition program to delete to get free space, then use the Paragon to do whatever.

ContextMenu Commander / Re: ContextMenu Commander
« on: March 07, 2009, 12:09 PM »
afa opening a specific tab in the property page, I wrote this for CommentConfig and it's hard-wired to open the Comment tab, but it could be generalized.

What's not shown in this code snip is processing WMDropFiles message.
I load a StringList with the file names from the drag & drop. The way
I used it, if the CommentConfig program was open you could drag & drop
a bunch of files onto the program form and it would open them all to the
Comment Property Page Tab if it existed, instead of doing it by hand for
each file.

sei is an array of SHELLEXECUTEINFO structs with the same length
as FileList that you find out by handling WMDropFiles.

for each file dropped it does ShellExecuteEx with the 'properties' verb.
Then it looks for a child window with a Title containing whatever string
you are looking for.  In this case 'Comment'

procedure TForm1.ProcessFiles;
var
  x: Integer;
  CharsCopied: Cardinal;
  WindowHandle, CommentHandle: HWND;
  MyMsg: TMessage;
  AnError, Found: boolean;
  MaxTabs: Integer;

begin
  MaxTabs := 4;
  for x := 0 to Count - 1 do
  begin
    AnError := False;
    Found := False;
    ZeroMemory(@sei[x], sizeof(SHELLEXECUTEINFO));
    sei[x].cbSize := sizeof(SHELLEXECUTEINFO);
    sei[x].fMask := SEE_MASK_INVOKEIDLIST;
    sei[x].lpVerb := 'properties';
    sei[x].nShow := SW_SHOW;
    sei[x].lpFile := PChar(FileNameList[x]);
    sei[x].Wnd := Handle;
    if not ShellExecuteEx(@sei[x]) then
      raise Exception.Create('ShellExecuteEx Failed!');
    Sleep(500);
    WindowHandle := GetForegroundWindow;
    MyMsg.Msg := PSM_SETCURSEL;
    MyMsg.lParam := 0;
    MyMsg.wParam := 1;
    while (not AnError) and (MyMsg.wParam < MaxTabs) and (not Found) do
    begin
      if not PostMessage(WindowHandle, MyMsg.Msg, MyMsg.wParam, MyMsg.lParam) then
      begin
        ShowMessage('PostMessage Error!');
        AnError := True;
      end;
      Sleep(200);
      CommentHandle := GetWindow(WindowHandle, GW_CHILD);
      CharsCopied := GetWindowText(CommentHandle, Title, sizeof(Title) - 1);
      if Pos('Comment', Title) > 0 then
        Found := True;
      Inc(MyMsg.wParam);
    end; // While
  end; // For
end; // ProcessFiles

Also you might look for KeyHH.  I'm pretty sure you can use it to display HtmlHelp without the ms updates.
