Softpedia and FileHippo both show it as Firefox 49.0 stable.  No changelog though:

http://www.softpedia...-Firefox-Final.shtml

Edit: I upgraded to the x86 49.0 from 48.02 and no, it does not load any faster, at least by eyeball.  Still seems to take almost a minute from double click to being able to type into the address bar.  :(

Found Deals and Discounts / EaseUS EverySync 3.0
« on: September 10, 2016, 07:57 AM »
EaseUS EverySync 3.0 is on Windows Deal

I am just curious if anyone is using it or a previous version?  btw I do not see any of the usual stuff about remaining time to download etc..  I put my order in about 10 minutes ago. So far no email.

But I am wondering if any of this more convenient cloud access stuff is really that much more convenient.  :)

General Software Discussion / The Outlook is disappointing
« on: August 31, 2016, 07:21 AM »
For as long as possible I out- maneuvered the attempts by Hotmail to draw me into the Outlook interface.  But alas, I had to log in through a link.  There was no way around it.  Now every time I open my mail instead of the inbox just being there I have to watch this progress bar for some unknown interval.  Just like my google mail.  Arrrgghhhhh!!

The guy who named it a "progress bar" was being ironic I suspect.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / AData s102 16GB USB 3.0 cheap
« on: August 11, 2016, 09:12 AM »
AData s102 16GB USB 3.0 has a promo code for a $3 discount(if you are willing to accept the promo emails) good until 8/15/2016.

If you use the $.99 shipping option this brings the cost under $7.  I ordered it just now.  This will be my 6th AData s102 USB 3.0.  So far none have let me down.  They seem to be in a pretty good price/performance niche.

Note that if you click the Blue color option the promo disappears.  So buy the gray one.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / Vopt 9 defragger free
« on: August 11, 2016, 08:28 AM »
Vopt 9 defrag for free.

Once installed copy the reg file text to a file named Vopt9reg.txt and place it in the same folder as vopt.exe.

Edit:  I tried this program a few years back.  Maybe I didn't keep it because it wasn't free.  But I ran it on my C: partition.  At first I got a bit paranoid when it showed it was going to close over 18,000 gaps on my partition.  But that only took about 25 minutes.  After it completed I did the analyze with Auslogics Pro.  It showed C: as being only .05 percent fragmented.  For those who like "quick" defraggers it seems positioned between Auslogics and MyDefrag.  They say the first defrag with Vopt takes the longest.  Supposedly if you use it multiple times per week there are fewer gaps to close.

One note, if you use Restore Points you may want to opt for the VSS compatible mode.  Conversely if you use a snapshot utility such as RollbackRX you should uninstall that utility before doing any defrag.

My impression after initial use is favorable.  A nice free tool. One nitpick the UI has a rather tiny font if you are over 40 years of age.  But otherwise the display shows what it going on as it moves the disk clusters around.

General Software Discussion / BingThing 1.6.1.0 guilty pleasure
« on: July 21, 2016, 03:04 PM »
BingThing 1.5.8.0 is now on my page:  MilesAheadSoftware
I believe it is in a usable condition now.  Tooltips should explain most functions.  For more detail see the included Readme.txt file.

I haven't posted this software on my site yet.  It probably needs an incremental search or filtering feature.  That may take awhile.  But it is meant to do some of the stuff I tried to do with BrowserBunch while also letting me search Bing(the guilty pleasure is naming it BingThing so I could not exactly have it use google.)

I notice browsers are very slow loading lately.  For those who leave the browser open all the time that may not matter.  But the way I roll is to close the browser when not using it and open it when I need something.  So I wrote BingThing to make it easier to have something feed the address line of the browser via the command line rather than waiting 45 seconds for Firefox or whatever it is to let me type into the field.

A nice feature is that it uses Single Instance to transfer the command line options to the first instance.  This simplifies using it with a hotkey program.  My ahk general purpose hotkey saves the current clipboard text, then sends Control c to copy the highlighted text in the active window.  Then is restores the saved text to the clipboard after launching BingThing.exe with the selected text.  If nothing is selected that is OK.  Either a new BingThing process starts, or if it is already running, it activates and gets the focus.

Anything on the command tail BingThing copies to the Input Line ready for either search or launch.  As shown in the screen shot, if you have browsers set to open urls in new tabs and they support multiple urls on the command line, such as Firefox or chrome or opera, then it will open multiple sites by just typing the domains on the same line.

BingThing saves the most recently used 128 url/search items.  The file handling is still a bit rough.  But at least there is some history.

Like browser bunch it starts with multiple blank buttons.  I expanded these to 8 over browser bunch's 6.  Pressing a blank button will associate a browser with that button and stick its icon on the button, just like browser bunch did.

There are still a few bugs but I thought I would post it in case anyone would like to play around with it.  I have a feeling the incremental search filtering in the history will be a pita so I am putting it off for now.  :)

Edit: I may have left out the most important bit of info to clarify using BingThing.  If the radio button Launch is selected, whatever browser button you push will be launched with a command tail of whatever is in the Input Line.  If the Search radio button is selected, then the contents of the Input Line are added to the Bing search string.  Any spaces are replaced with "%20" to avoid the command tail being chopped short by cmd.exe seeing a space character.

Bing supports the "site" parameter so for example if you wish to search Walmart for baseball caps you may type "site:walmart.com baseball caps" in the Input Line, make sure the Search radio is selected, then press the button for the Browser you wish to use for that particular search.  I find it handy for videos as some sites work better with Firefox when trying to play flash video but espn3.com seems to prefer Opera.  Also if you have your hotkey thing going you can copy from most any other program such as another browser or editor and open one of your browsers to the url.

For grins here is the section I use for hotkey.  I use Control Winkey b, but you can change it how you like:

Code: Autohotkey [Select]
  1. ^#b::
  2.     ClipSave := Clipboard
  3.     Clipboard := ""
  4.     Send,^c
  5.     ClipWait,2
  6. ; set the path to BingThing.exe on your system
  7.     Run, C:\Utils\BingThing\BingThing.exe %Clipboard%
  8.     Clipboard := ClipSave
  9.      ClipSave = ; free memory
  10. return
[/s]

http://sharewareonsa...y-utilities-pro-sale

2 days 11 hours yadda yadda left to download and install.

I decided to try it this time.  It has some stuff the Wise Care 365 has such as removing internet history traces, defrag registry etc..

Also it has duplicate file find and some other stuff.  It wants to start with Windows but you can turn that off in Settings.  At least it is configured with automatic mode Off as default.

The last PCMag review is a few years old.  But Softpedia spoke well of it.  If I run into anything really nasty I will post.  If you haven't done ShareWare OnSale before they ask for email address and a short profile.  But it is very short.  Mainly they are interested in your job title.  I just put Student and they gave me the software anyway.  :)

Edit: One suggestion.. hang onto the page from ShareWare OnSale until you Register the software because it tells you exactly in what menu the registration dialog is. It is not under About as most software has it.  You can waste time trying to find the dialog if you just
  it.             :)

I just checked for updates in FF 47.0 and it says I have the latest version.  But yet again the installer is available from Softpedia:

http://www.softpedia...-Firefox-Final.shtml

Although the changelog entry is still for 47.0.  But anyway, Softpedia seems to have an "in" somewhere so I may as well put it on.  Mostly I use SlimJet but there are a few things that work better in FF still.

Edit:  Tricky tricky.  Once installed it opens the first time to Mozilla page and clicking What's New gets an up to date changelog:

General Software Discussion / FolderSave v. 1.0.0.8
« on: June 24, 2016, 07:40 AM »
On another forum a poster without a UPS wondered if there was a way to overcome that fact that when he got a power glitch, the folders he had open on the desktop were not saved for next boot.  He has the folder options set to restore open folders on startup.

It seemed like something not difficult to hack so I wrote a small utility called FolderSave that sits in the tray.  When run with /auto command line param, it opens the saved folder set(if any) and positions and sizes the folder windows where they were when saved.  Every 30 seconds it saves the folder set if there are any Explorer Folder Windows open.

It has only been tested on single monitor Windows English language version of Windows 8.0.  But it is pretty basic and so should work as expected on most systems XP and later.  It writes a text file to the same folder as the FolderSave.exe.  For this reason it is a good idea not to have the exe file underneath Program Files or Program Files (x86) to avoid UAC and/or access denied crapola.

It is just a hack but if you regularly use the same set of folders positioned and sized just so then it may save you time and/or avoid running a template type utility if the only reason to do so is to set up the folder pattern.

You may download from my page here:
MilesAhead Software for Windows PCs

Please see the included Readme.txt file for requirements and more info.

Edit: source is included so you may change the hotkey or comment out the playing of the chime when the folders are saved etc..

To compile use the latest version of AutoHotkey
I used the 32 bit Unicode flavor to compile the exe.  A custom icon is also included.

basically saying the GOTD version is crippleware and pay $14.95 if you want the real deal.  Guess I'll uninstall soon.  :(

Living Room / Limitless is limited after all
« on: June 07, 2016, 01:26 PM »
Limitless was the only TV series I made a point to watch every week.  Suppose you had a creative inventive show that actually got good ratings.  What would you do?  Well if you are CBS you dump it of course.  Can't open up a can of worms by having a successful TV series that doesn't suck.

This reminds me of Nowhere Man with Bruce Greenwood.  Half way through the first season they decide to twist the plot so that everything can be wrapped up in 13 episodes.  Can't have thought provoking episodes continuing on willy-nilly or people might grow to expect TV series to make sense.

The "kill it before it spreads" syndrome strikes again.
Oh well.  No need to consider subscribing to CBS live on air broadcasts especially since any good shows are killed and the live NFL games they carry are exempt from the streaming deal.  Guess I have to buy a tuner for my Laptop.

I hear there is a sequel to the movie Chronicle, which is of course titled Chronicle 2

Maybe I'll score one out of three.  :)
Edit: although after reading more stuff about the movies "development" it seems to be foundering.  IMDB says it is "in development" so maybe it isn't totally dead yet.  Here's hoping some good SciFi is made someplace.  :)

General Software Discussion / Toolwiz Time Freeze goes shareware
« on: June 02, 2016, 02:12 PM »
http://www.toolwiz.c...toolwiz-time-freeze/

The site is kind of funky now.  Just bullets with blurbs.  No detail on the difference between the old freeware and the new shareware.  Changelog says updated engine.  But I cannot find any detail about what is gained by paying for it.  So I assume it is a trial version now and you pay to keep it working.  Unless someone knows something specific.

If the free one worked on your machine you may want to save a copy of the installer.  :)

I have Tamper Monkey extension in SlimJet.  But I have no idea what to do with it.  The scripts I find on the download boards are for sites I haven't heard of.  Does anyone have some favorite general purpose Tamper Monkey or Grease Monkey scripts they wish to tout?

Found Deals and Discounts / [free] AnVir Task Manager Pro
« on: May 27, 2016, 07:47 AM »
I am an occasional user of AnVir Task Manager Free.  It has a pretty nice UI for a TM replacement.  When I saw this Pro version free I figured may as well.

http://sharewareonsa...giveaway-coupon-sale

Basically just fill in your email address and what OS you regularly use and you get a download link.

Edit:  Ok I just installed it.  You get an email with name regkey to register the software.  What Pro has that Free does not is some doodads such as adding buttons to your windows(On Top, Min to Tray etc..) and info icons to the System Tray(cpu usage, disk usage etc..)

If you want to use those options then I guess you would set the program to start with Windows.  If you already have other utilities that do all those things then you may just want to launch it when you need to use a Task Manager.

Found Deals and Discounts / [free] Start Menu 10 Pro
« on: May 27, 2016, 07:32 AM »
BTJ still has Start Menu 10 Pro for free

http://www.bitsdujou...in=today-100-percent

I am not sure what features Pro has over the Free version except for the user categories of folder sets.  I got a free Start Menu X Pro in the past and it was just too much work to set up my own categories.  I am going to take a look for a feature comparison chart.

But anyway, on my Windows 8.0 I found that having Start Menu 10 start with Windows and automatically skip Start Screen did not work for me.  I disabled autostart and load it with a delayed loader program I wrote(Delayed Cuts.)  I have the Desktop Tile in the top left of the Start Screen so all I have to do is hit Enter anyway.  No biggie.

Start Menu 10 does have a recently run programs panel that actually seems to put some recently run program there for reuse.  It can be handy for some stuff buried deep in the start menu.

I was using the free version but for nothing I could resist installing the pro.  There is no registration.  Whey you "purchase" it from BTJ you get a download link and four days to install it.  From what they say it will not install after that.  So get it into your backup image.  :)

Edit: I found the comparison chart

Post New Requests Here / Idea : One Shot System Time Sync
« on: May 24, 2016, 04:20 PM »
I find when I WiFi that the WiFi routers block the Windows Time Service.  I thought it may be a nice idea for a small utility that does a one shot time sync when a button is clicked.  It could sit in the tray.  Perhaps with a command line switch so that it syncs the time and exits without showing a Tray Icon.

Right now what I am doing is getting the exact time off the web, then using the time command on the command line.  It would be nicer just to hit a button and have it compensate for AM/PM etc..

This is mainly aimed at my Laptop so I am looking more for a manual trigger than recurrent as I may not be connected to the net when the interval expires.

I found a few ahk scripts on the forum that use the IE activex control to get the time, but they don't quite do the whole job.  Sort of fragments from back around 2006.

The simpler the better.  :)

Edit:  this thread shows how to get the tine using the ie object avoiding the router block.

General Software Discussion / Outlook App Popup : how to block?
« on: May 23, 2016, 01:10 PM »
Several times a day I go to my hotmail account and this same annoying popup telling me that the Outlook App is available for download, covers the entire page.  Anyone know how to block it?  I am running the latest SlimJet and I have JavaScript PopUp Blocker installed.  It catches many of the annoying popups.  But not this one.

I am running the oldest UI they will let me use for my hotmail account.  On my backup mail account on hotmail I let myself get pulled into the vortex and now I cannot back out of the new fangled lame ass Outlook UI on that account.  I sure do not want my main account to flush down the same tube.  Edit: not that the popup blocker has anything to do with preventing that mandatory migration.  I just never want to see the popup for something I do not want to use.  There must be a way to kill it dead door nail permanent like.  :)

General Software Discussion / Shellbag Analyzer and Cleaner 1.25
« on: April 11, 2016, 08:29 AM »
For some reason Shellbag Analyzer and Cleaner 1.25 just showed up on Snapfiles today.  Perhaps they just got around to notifying Snapfiles of their new version(released March 5, 2016.)

Anyway, I know from issues on Windows Vista, Seven and Eight forums that Explorer shellbags can have old information and run out of room for new stuff.  Which is why Explorer can forget folder size and window placement information.  What this analyzer and cleaner does is sift through all the shellbags in the Registry and produce a report.  Then you can erase the shellbags left over from deleted folders and/or optimize the remaining shellbags.

I recommend using some method of backing up your Registry before experimenting.  I made a snapshot with RollbackRX and also used Tweaking.com RegistryBackup before trying it. So far it seems to make the taskbar population snappier(I have a triple row of icons in my Taskbar.)

For freeware it looks like something kind of fun.  It is touted as a privacy utility since supposedly the Registry has this info of deleted folders and the names of the folders might give some clue what programs you were running or something.  But I think the shell optimization effect may be more useful in the real world.

I have only done one clean and optimization.  But so far things seem better than before running it.  But I do have my backups if weird stuff happens.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / Shadow Defender free
« on: April 08, 2016, 08:18 AM »
100% discount in effect for about 2 days 17 hours after this post date/time.

http://sharewareonsale.com/

I believe I tried this once before and it did not work smoothly on my Laptop.  ToolWiz TimeFreeze is free and has a similar functionality.  But it works on my Lappy.  ToolWiz products may not be updated very often, if at all, in the future though.  The software producer's status seems unclear.  ToolWiz TimeMachine has not been updated in a couple of years.

In any case Shadow Defender may work better on your machine than mine.

Living Room / Twist Tie alternative?
« on: April 06, 2016, 03:26 PM »
I am wondering if anyone has a good alternative to Twist Ties for keeping stuff like ear bud wires, usb connector cords, and other stuff that has small gauge wire connected to it, from getting all tangled?

Granted Twist Ties are cheap but they can be a bit of a pain to twist and untwist.  I tried using bobby pins but they are too straight.  I was thinking along the lines of small padded alligator clips.  Maybe something I could find in a Dollar Store.

I don't have a junk drawer for these kind of resources.  I have to pretty much buy everything I need for specific purposes.  With all the hw guys out there I figure there must be ingenious solutions too.    :)

General Software Discussion / Cookies click driving me crazy
« on: April 05, 2016, 08:20 AM »
Every web page I go to now, they want me to click a button after they tell me their site uses cookies!!  I have one question.  Can they not set a cookie to remember that I clicked the button last time? After all, I told them it was OK to put a cookie on my system.  So why don't they instead of being annoying?

I put a watch on camel cubed(camelcamelcamel.com) awhile ago to notify me if the AData s102 USB 3.0 flash drive 256GB model broke a hundred bucks.  I got the email.  The price was $94.99 so I had to go for it.

http://www.amazon.co...6G-RGY/dp/B00R61UX7G

Supposedly there is only one left.  :)

This flash drive has mid range to good performance.  But I like it because that is coupled with rugged construction and reliability.  I have a 32GB a 64GB and 2 128GB of this model.  None have given me a problem.  The sequential read and write numbers come in as expected for large file transfers.

I think I paid close to $90 for the first 128GB s102.  The second I got for less than $40.  I have been waiting for the 256GB to break a hundred bucks.  Looks like the price is finally starting to crumble for that capacity.

Edit:

Apparently there is a performance bonus on the 256GB capacity drive.  I thought perhaps Amazon got it wrong because earlier I could not find any other location with their numbers.  But AData's data sheet bears it out:

http://www.adata.com...fd/specification/145

Up to 200 MB/s sequential read and up to 120 MB/s sequential write for large files.  Now I am happier I pushed the button.
