Living Room / LoveHKFilm calls it quits after 15 years
« on: April 10, 2017, 08:53 AM »
Another site bites the dust.  LoveHKFilm is throwing in the towel after 15 years of reviews.  This site hipped me to the works of many of the most intriguing HK actors, actresses, and directors.  It also warned me to avoid productions by the sinister Wong Jing.  :)

I am sorry to see it go.  But the heyday oh Hong Kong films is long past I suppose.

Revo Uninstaller Free has released a bugfix update.  Version 2.0.3.  The last release was nearly four months ago so it may be a good idea to download the new one.  Here is the version history

It says "minor bugs" fixed.  But still, it doesn't cost anything to update.  :)

Edit: Btw, I was looking around to see if the Pro version was on giveaway anywhere.  I had the free version 2.0.2 installed and noticed the update.

Found Deals and Discounts / Wise Care 365 Pro [softpedia giveaway]
« on: March 27, 2017, 06:59 AM »
Wise Care 365 Pro is available for download as a Softpedia Giveaway

There is no time limit on the license but there are no free upgrades either.

The main feature I use is the Registry Cleaner.  To be honest I am not sure which features are in the Pro that are not in the Free version.  Free is likely fine for most people.  But it can be kind of fun to get the Pro of any software if it is on giveaway.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / CPUBalance Pro [free GOTD]
« on: March 14, 2017, 02:39 PM »
As of post time there is still 12 hours and 20 something minutes to get CPUBalance Pro for free.  I have been running it for about an hour.  So far I like it.  What it aims to do is avoid the bogging of the process that has the focus by limiting CPU hogging programs running in the backgroud.

The main pleasant result I have seen so far is running SuperAntiSpyware scan in the background while surfing the web with Firefox in the foreground.  Ordinarily Firefox is a bit jittery when SAS is scanning in the background.  This time with the CPUBalance Pro running, FF ran smoothly at the cost that the background scan took a bit longer.

The only glitch I have seen is when run it pops up an error message that it cannot save a scheduled task and therefore it cannot be started at login with elevated privileges.  I don't care about that since I prefer to start it manually.  I just wish I could eliminate the error message. But I suppose I will have to bite the bullet and hit Enter after running it.  (My Laptop is a bit quirky.  You may not get this error.)

It comes with one year of updates.  There is some stuff in the readme about registration but afaict there is no way to register it.  Just install it and you are good to go.  In any case I did go to the web site and enter some info because I was not aware I did not need to.  Here is the link:

Along with the Cyberfox 52.0 release was text of the direction of Cyberfox.  To sum it up they have switched to ESR mode for 12 months.  After that, nada.  All gone.

A shame because through all the Firefox 64 bit working/not working seesaw, the Cyberfox 64 bit version trod along with no problems for the most part.

The other thing a bit weird, the new updater apparently uses .NET.  Since I am on Windows 8.0 and do not have .NET 4.6.1 installed, after a download that took 20 minutes, validating hash etc. it comes up and tells me it cannot run because the minimum .NET is 4.6.1.  Duh. How about checking the required .NET version at the beginning?

But anyway, sorry to see it go.

General Software Discussion / Macrium Reflect v7 release on Feb. 27th
« on: February 21, 2017, 09:19 AM »
I didn't notice this until I got an email from Macrium.  Evidently v7 release is due Feb. 27, 2017:

http://www.macrium.c...pages/version-7.aspx

I was under the impression that the rapid restore was only in the server editions.  But consulting the feature comparison chart it seems to be available in all but the free version.  The term they use is Rapid Data Restore.  Here is an editions comparison chart:

Found Deals and Discounts / Windows Deal dead in the water?
« on: February 09, 2017, 06:54 AM »
The page still works.  But for weeks now it seems there is the same single give-away.  Windows Deal seems to be dead in the water.  Anyone have an alternative?

Non-Windows Software / Android book reader (thinking Moon+)
« on: January 19, 2017, 10:03 AM »
Finally I am getting into some of these 21st century devices.  I have an Android phone(Marshmallow) and an Android tablet(Lollipop.)  I have Calibre on my PC.  After reading about a few of the book readers for Android I am thinking Moon+ free since I can access my Google drive from all three systems.

If anyone is using Moon+ can you tell me if it is only the current bookmark that is synced in the Pro version?  In other words, if I can store all my books on Google Drive using the free Moon+ I would like to try that out before worrying about doing the Pro.  I am likely to do most reading using my Tablet.

I guess what I am asking is if anyone knows if I copy the Calibre library folder onto my Google drive that is associated with my Android devices, if the files will propagate when additions are made?  The bookmark sync feature may be nice and perhaps in the future it may come in handy.  But I would like to just get the basics handled for now.

I installed Moon+ reader on my phone and it automatically installed on the sd card(I formatted the card as phone storage rather than portable USB.)  So I take that as a good sign.  I have step by step setup from an online page but I'm on the lookout for any tips avoiding the most common stumbling blocks.

On my phone I find my favorite app so far is the one for the public transportation in Miami.  I can check when the next train is due at a particular station and even if the elevator to the train platform is out of order before carding in and looking at the TV monitor.  Help this troglodyte see the light!  :)

I still hate trying to type into touch screen but I have to admit some of the stuff is fun to use.  :)

I see that my TipOff utility is still being hosted on Torrys.  You may download from my author's page there:
http://torry.net/authorsmore.php?id=2087

For details on the utility see this thread:
https://www.donation....msg153434#msg153434

Note that at the time I wrote it, 64 bit versions of Windows came with a 32 bit version of the File Explorer under SysWow64 folder.  This enabled 32 bit shell extensions to work on x64 provided you opened this 32 bit Explorer window first.  However for some unexplained reason known only to MS they seem to have done away with the 32 bit Explorer.exe that made life easier.

As far as I know TipOff will only work on 32 bit versions of Windows or through a file manager that enables the 32 bit shell extensions.  One being the freeCommander file manager.

For those of you running Windows 32 bit who would like to comment files using a tab in the file's property page, you may wish to take a look at TipOff.  It is no longer being developed since after coding several of these type of comment utilities I have come to the conclusion that they cannot be implemented seamlessly unless one happens to have written a file manager application to host it.  In other words, if you copy files by intuitive means, the comment will not travel with the file since it is not built into the file system as it was in the CMS file system used on Vax VMS machines.

C++Builder 10.1 Berlin Starter Edition for Free.  I could not install the Delphi release since my system has issues with Windows Installer.  I assume this installer uses Windows Installer so I am not going to attempt to put it on.

I just thought I would give a heads up if anyone is interesting in trying out CPP Builder.  :)

General Software Discussion / C Users Journal Nostalgia
« on: December 02, 2016, 10:20 AM »
From 1990 to 1994 R&D Publications of Lawrence KS published 8 of my articles in their various magazines.  The name of the company was a play on words as the publishers were Robert and Donna Ward.  The best known of the magazines was The C Users Journal which later changed its name to The C/C++ Users Journal once C++ burst on the scene.

Of the 8 articles 4 were published in CUJ and the other 4 scattered across the other magazines.  The hard copies I had are long gone and it has been so long I cannot even remember the titles of the non CUJ articles.  But the reason for this burst of nostalgia is I managed to find 2 more of my CUJ pieces.  The C Users Journal articles are archived online.  I used to have a CDROM with my other articles but it is no more.

In any case if it was not PC Magazine most people were not familiar with these computer magazines.  But now and then I run into an old time C programmer who remembers CUJ.

I could not find any covers from the issues in which my pieces were published but here is a cover shot just to give an idea what the magazine looked like.

CUJ.png

Nothing is as dated as old source code.  As example, one of the articles is titled A Universal C++ Data Type.  I am sure any programming student in the college here would immediately ask me "why didn't you just use the STL?" (standard template library.)  The answer being it was not implemented yet.  I think Borland Turbo C++ came out with an update with the STL included about a year after I wrote the piece.  But even though the code is obsolete the prose is not too bad.  (It was helped by the fact the Editor in Chief reordered the wording in quite a few of the sentences. I tended to use passive voice.)  :)

I usually don't mention my publications to anyone since programming magazines were in effect trade journals and nobody outside of coding circles really cared even back then.  But it was nice to get some positive encouragement while I was studying coding on my own.  Not to mention the publications served to get me work in the industry without previous experience.

I guess when one is of retirement age it is OK to look back at some things.  I only regret my stint as a Software Analyst was so short lived.  20 years of that kind of work would have provided me with a nice nest egg.  :)

The links are pasted in chronological order.  Note that any contact info in the author's bio sections is obsolete.  I no longer live in Massachusetts nor have any of the email accounts mentioned.

Also I am curious if the bookmarks will drag and drop right into the post here or if I will have to format them myself.  :)

Buffering Mouse Events

The Evolution of a Binary Tree in TurboC

A Universal C++ Data Type

Multithreading with OS/2 and Borland C++

(For those curious the links dragged but I had to cut and paste them over the Title text.)

I am glad at least the archives provide some evidence that I did some of the stuff I claim.  People tend to discount most everything you say if you do not have a permanent address.  Strange as it may seem.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / [free] Delphi 10.1 Berlin Starter Edition
« on: November 30, 2016, 06:17 PM »
Delphi 10.1 Berlin Starter Edition free.  It has the same language amounting to "free as long as you don't maker over a grand a year using it" we Delphi Programmers are familiar with.

No DB stuff.  But according to the page it can target Windows desktop and tablets/devices that run Windows.  I have downloaded it and will install it in a day or two.  It should be fun to check it out.  I like RAD drag and drop UI.  I have a recent Pro edition of Visual Studio but I cannot feature xaml.  It looks too much like writing web pages in html.  It should be fun to see how long it takes to create a Delphi Windows program with a few buttons and perhaps an edit widget or something.   :)

Living Room / Why Does Everything Have To Be Video?
« on: November 23, 2016, 06:55 AM »
it caused me to waste a great deal of time looking at videos when I could have probably been doing something more useful.

That triggers a pet peeve.  Why does every explanation how to do something have to be a video now?  It drives me nuts.  I want to know (something made up just to illustrate my point) how to change the HD resolution of a video player, let's say.  When the answer could be "go to main menu, click Options, then Display, then HD Settings, then click the desired resolution."  Instead a google search brings up a video I click on. "OK, here's were we go to download the player, then double click it to install.  Keep clicking Next.  Then go to the site for the free registration.  Now we go somewhere to play a video.  Choose any video.  OK, now go to the main menu and click Options..."

Arrgggggg!!!   :)

Try Everything Search latest features/fixes on Beta Nightly Builds

Zip files available in both 32 and 64 bit builds.
Note that Everything seems to run multiple instances these days.  I could not figure out why I could not unzip the download and copy Everything.exe over the old version when there was no Icon in the tray.  TM showed a copy was running "hidden" so to speak.  :)

Living Room / MDC Pres to receive Medal of Freedom
« on: November 21, 2016, 04:56 PM »
Not to reflect all Miami Dade College news into the forum.  But it is not every day the President of the college gets the Medal of Freedom.  Webcast is to be live tomorrow (Tuesday Nov. 22)

President Obama visited MDC a short time ago.  Apparently it made a good impression on him.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / [free one year license] RegOrganizer 7.52
« on: October 31, 2016, 05:04 PM »
RegOrganizer 7.52 100% discount.  One year license no support or updates:
http://www.windowsde...iscount-coupon-code/

Apparently you have until Nov. 6 to install and register the product.

For an idea what is included I recommend reading the page at Softpedia including the 2 user reviews:

http://www.softpedia.../Reg-Organizer.shtml

7.52 is indeed the latest version.

One of the included tools is an install monitor that allows you to record the changes made by the installer and undo them for a complete uninstall.  Generally I have found those to work OK if there is not much time between the install and uninstall.  However I advise caution before doing things like installing, using a software program for 2 years, then uninstalling via the tool.  Because changes made by installing other programs can get undone as an unintended consequence.  But as an undo tool it may be preferred by some over rolling back the system types of utilities.

I haven't tried it.  Just downloaded it in case I decide to give it a shot.  :)

I know there are download AddOns for Firefox to preserve the file modification time stamp when downloading a file to Windows.  Anyone know of a similar extension for browsers based on chrome?

I've been searching for over 1/2 hour and haven't gotten a hit yet.

I see a lot of hits in google when I search about Windows Installer hanging on "creating shortcuts."  But I don't see any solution that seems to apply to my case.  Most often I get this when trying to update Calibre 64 bit.  But I see it sporadically with many softwares that use Windows Installer.

This is really annoying since it requires killing the installer with Task Manager, then before anything else will install using Windows Installer you have to go through some mumbo jumbo to back off the aborted install.

Has anyone run into a "magic bullet" to get rid of this bug?
Unfortunately Windows Update does not work on this Laptop.
So if an update fixes it I have to get it on the machine without
using the updater, or Windows Installer.

I tried tweaking.com's windows installer fixer but I did not go through all the power down mumbo jumbo since I don't see why I should have to hard button the machine off to apply a fix.

Every different google hit on "creating shortcuts" with a Windows Installer hang talks about a different application.  So the installer itself must be hosed.

General Software Discussion / Easy 7-Z Updated Oct. 10
« on: October 11, 2016, 07:03 AM »
Easy 7-Zip is a free Gui for 7-zip.  It adds a few doodads like icons in the 7-zip Explorer context menus, and an easy to use File manager etc..

I was waiting for it to update to the new 16.x releases of 7-zip.  According to the home page it now contains 7-zip 16.04.

If you like 7-zip just the way it is there's no need for the Gui.  But I like some of the things the author has done.  Simple enhancements that do not break anything but make 7-zip more fun to use.

Edit:  Also when installing newer versions of 7-zip in the future you can overwrite the old one and Easy 7-Zip's context menu icons etc.. will still be there.  I was using 16.03 and 16.04 with it.  But I figured I would uninstall 7-zip and install Easy 7-zip combined package just to be pedantic.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / Wise System Monitor [ freeware ]
« on: October 03, 2016, 05:26 PM »
I guess this has been out for a while, but I just noticed it.  Wise System Monitor has a nice floating window in the notification area that shows current internet download and upload speed, Ram usage, CPU usage and CPU temp.

On my Laptop Task Manager shows virtually zero for resources used by just the floating window, except for Ram which indicates about 5 MB used.  Not bad.  The window stays on top and is only about 12 pixels high.  Also you can open it up for more details on hardware, OS etc..

A nice little freeware it will run on XP and later Windows.

DC Website Help and Extras / [solved] Outbox still exist?
« on: September 30, 2016, 10:03 AM »
I see when I compose a PM there is still the option to save a copy to my outbox, which is checked.  However I cannot find the outbox.  When I click Messages the only thing hanging there is Inbox.  Is the outbox history or just hidden?

Edit:  Ok, found "Sent Items" in the menu on the left hand side.
