You talking about the web based version, or does the downloadable windows client also have the IE dependency? While the web based will certainly be handy, I think the windows client will best suit your needs with live find as you type and better hotkey support.

Maybe they figured . . . if it does everything it's supposed to, why cram more crap in? I hate software that isn't updated, but then . . . realistically . . . it's usually features I don't need + bugs :)

I used yeahwrite obsessively back in '98 or '99, absolutely adored it.  I was trying to remember the name of it a few weeks back, but couldn't . . . so thanks nogojoe! Time to download it and take a walk down memory lane.

Sabot--It's really not so much an "over the top" application, though all the colorful tabs can give that impression.  The reason its file size remains so small is that it's not so much feature-intensive as functionally flexible. All those eye-boggling tabs aren't different features so much as slightly tweaked ways of using the internal editor.  Pretty much everything in it does the same thing, it's just divided up into pre-defined sections to give you an idea how to use it. It's ultimately a union of a simplified word processor and a simplified spread sheet application. It's really quite simple and intuitive, as I remember it.  And cheap, 19.99 for life (after all, if it's never updated you'll never pay an upgrade fee :)

As for your issue, sabot, have you considered giving Evernote a try? It might work well . . . and the current beta version 3.0 syncs online so you can access the same data via the software, your online enabled phone, or any web browser.

Currently we've been using a number of loose papers filled with this kind of info, but as you can guess they very quickly get outdated, torn, lost, edited, scribbled on, etc. The built in address book on the phone system is extremely clunky with no search function whatsoever, so that's no help.

With evernote, you could actually photograph/scan in those hand written notes and they'd be searchable. Evernote has a pretty impressive OCR indexer.  The aforementioned online sync capabilities would make it somewhat usable with a smart phone type device, for added convenience.

I've been daydreaming of a simple, yet extremely efficient application that can allow me to put all this info at my fingertips but so far all the PIM and Address book software I've been trying out are *way* too overpowered for what I'm looking for. I'm hoping if I list out the small wishlist I have that someone can point me in the right direction or just whip it up

Using Evernote 3, moreso than evernote 2, is extremely simple/straight forward.  Just jot down notes which can be tagged, can optionally add checkboxes for todo stuff, and it's all find-as-you-type search.

I'd also need just an input text box that would allow me to copy paste info into it to add to the file of phone numbers, emails and whatever other misc info.

It comes with a "Universal Clipper" add on -- highlight any text, hit a hot key and that text will be inserted into evernote as a new note -- which you can then tag or edit as necessary.

Extra credit would be a way to arrow key up and down the list of results and be able to hit a hotkey like alt-e to edit that line directly rather than having to manually go edit the overall file.
If you make each entry its own note rather than compiling them all in a single note this would pretty much be inherently there for you.

Drop me an e-mail and I'll send you an invite to try the Beta.  For what you described as your needs, I think it might be a really good option for consideration.  It doesn't cost anything at present and what it will cost later on down the road is not yet known.  Something per month per the amount of storage you need, I guess.

Hare to type with pee in your eyes anyway, Mouser . . .

Seriously, though, is it really so painful to generate a license key occasionally?  I'd rather download a license key every six months than authorize a credit card payment every 8 to 12 months. . .

But what do I know?!

For all the flak you catch for FREE license codes, you may as well make donations compulsory.

I'm not frustrated . . . quite the opposite.  I've become so certain they're incapable of removing them from the list, I'd be disappointed if they actually did what I wanted them to do.  Their failure is reaffirmation of their incompetence.

Some evening when I have the time, and some strong drink, I'll go back into battle with them.  What I really want to do is drunk dial Michael Robertson.

General Software Discussion / Re: Carbonite Online Backup
« on: April 19, 2008, 10:30 PM »
Syncplicity is free, at least as of now.

Also, take a look at Mozy.

I was wondering if anyone here had any personal experience with Carbonite specifically, though personal experiences with other comparable services would also be valuable.  Have you used any of these services, or are you just aware of them? I mean, I can do a google search for online backup--I did prior to deciding I was leaning toward Carbonite.

Mozy: among other things, I prefer Carbonites pricing scheme.
Syncplicity: I want to backup my data and forget it; I don't want to (a) use a new beta for that (b) get locked in with a product before I know its pricing scheme.  More worry some, I've read a few recent stories that cited the CEO expecting the pricing to be in the 20$/mo range. Finally,  am very turned off by its emphasis on data sharing and integrating with facebook, etc.  Judging by the price and services, it's targeting data sharing and syncronizing more than straight up backing up.  I'm far more comfortable with a backup service that just sticks with backing up. Less is more when it comes to set and forget.

General Software Discussion / Carbonite Online Backup
« on: April 19, 2008, 02:25 PM »
I've to date walked the frayed tight rope of PC using without any form of backup (save for a handful of things on USB pen drives).  It's bit me on the ass a few times--twice I've lost literally everything.  So I'm finally looking at taking the plunge and backing things up.  Despite it being an obvious necessity that would have saved me a lot of heartache, I've never really been compelled to bother with it.  I hate the idea of a local backup--whether an external drive or another form of media, it's yet another "thing" I have to worry about--and another thing that can fail. Or be stepped on. Or eaten by the dog.

After a voluntary (unpaid) raving over it by Gregg Stebben on the radio, I've decided to install a trial of Carbonite.  It's fifty bucks a year, paid annually, for unlimited use.  What I'm wondering is if anyone here has any personal experience with Carbonite--any catastrophic issues or great experiences.

So far, I've no complaints... it appears to be backing things up. Presumably somewhere in the Internet cloud where I can retrieve it if necessary. . . but until it becomes necessary to restore from backup, what do I know? :)

411
but I just really don't get EverNote 3.

. . . and I'm still using it. I still don't think it's great. I don't even know that I *like* it, but . . . it's handy and I keep on using it. It gets the "Things that make me go 'huh!'" award for the month.

412
Awe shit, gotta keep my wife away from this -- unless it is said tongue in cheek.

I'm a bit of a neat freak always smilingly-nagging at my wife because her car, desk and any other personal space are always by far the most cluttered points in view.

Though with an investment consisting of a mispelled name and a single post on how to change it . . . really, it would be faster/easier to just sign up all over again rather than worry about a forum post followed by a private message followed by administrative action :-\

They look almots sci-fi in origin -- especially the fifty pence piece. I immediately thought of Battlestar Galactica.

It's beta, I know . . . and I love their spirit, enthusiasm and the fact that they're open to such drastic changes to their mode of operation . . . but I just really don't get EverNote 3.  Partially because it doesn't support Opera, I admit -- but I just find the desktop client and web versions alike to be a bit . . . clunky. Of course, lack of palm sync makes it largely pointless for me anyway. But I just expected it to be "better".

Living Room / Re: Do you collect anything?
« on: April 08, 2008, 08:29 AM »
I do not collect anything in a dedicated/meaningful manner--there are some things I'm less inclined to have self-control in purchasing -- but it's more impulsive than collective.  For example, I love lighters -- and purchase far more of them than I need/can use. The end up used, lost or broken 90% of the time, however. I have no central repository for them.

I love hats and sort of collect them, but in a more utilitarian manner.  They can be costly and I'm not willing to go broke so I only purchase a handful a year -- A Fedora every six to twenty-four months, a ballcap every now and then.  Again, though, not really collecting as I use rather than present them.  It's not collecting if you're not hoarding and protecting, is it?

The closest thing I have to a collection is liquor bottle tops -- which isn't a collection based on uniquenes but on archival.  When I finish a bottle of liquor, I keep the lid.  Not surprisingly, it's a pile of very-similar bits of plastic, as I tend to drink always the same three or four things with only the occasional variation.  I've been hoarding them for about four years -- it wasn't intended as such, but it essentially started around the time I became a father.  So I guess it's a diary of how much he's driven me to drink.

417
What are you looking to accomplish? If it's nothing too involving, I'd be glad to spare a few minutes.  Feel free to drop me a PM with more specifics.

DateBk6 is great!  Small fast and dependable.  Pimlico apparently understands the wisdom in "not reinventing the wheel."  I'll stick with this one for a while.

I haven't used poco for a long, long time--I've lately been flirting with the idea of trying it (Or Barca?) as I want a desktop solution to sync with my Palm that isn't Palm Desktop. I think Barca fills that role, but I'm not certain. Years ago I remember reading that Palm sync was planned for Barca but don't know what became of that.

http://I have used P...mails just vanished! Man, that'd make a man's stomach churn . . . My favorite aspect of gmail is having a server side backup of everything that I mostly trust.  I am still in limbo for my local "backup". At present, I'm using Opera's M2, however using the betas I never really know for sure what day IMAP is supported and how well. Some times it works, some times it doesn't :)

http://FWIW - your n...lose to your person?

Thanks! A rare moment when my hat was off my head . . . there's a scalp and some hair under there! Theprawn.com's non-obscure content was always there, just tucked a few layers back for a bit.  Some days I'm more self-indulgent than others, I'm sure I'll be making it unreadable again before too long!  As for JARDAY, you might say someone close to my person :D

it might be a good idea next time you receive an email to look through the full headers to check if they are sending it to the address you think they are.

I know e-mail headers. I combed through them to make sure I wasn't making an ass of myself. It was going to the e-mail address I "thought" it was. And no, I didn't "wait" three years. I waited three years to bring the discussion here, it has been an ongoing battle with them for three years.

My favorite standalone games for the PC are
Aquaria -- probably not up her alley, though--sort of an ocean exploration adventure
Eets -- action/puzzle game that is a lot of fun; probably more your style than hers, though :P

(Short answer is I know of no such website)

Last night, I still couldn't log in -- receiving the same "Oh so busy" message, so I shot off a couple more messages to support.  I didn't bother with niceties as they seem not to respond well to that -- and received yet another assurance from support that my e-mail address was removed from all lists.  This response was much faster than previous responses, a fact I credit to use of every socially unacceptable word in my vocabulary, and perhaps will be my golden ticket to life without Linspire spam.  Only time will tell.

If I do get another message, it will be extremely tempting to forward it on one hundred times each to every linspire address I can find.  Though becoming a spammer isn't high on my priority list . . .

Your advice is very sound, iphigenie, and I really would like to try it. But after 3 or so years of this I don't think I have the patience to be civil -- and I no longer have any clear objective, other than to make them stop e-mailing me.  It has all become very irate, irrational, stupid -- a fued over an e-mail address. :)

424
Linspire, Inc. Is the worst company I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with.  From my first moments with them several years until . . . Probably forever. . . They torment me. I think they do it on purpose. That or they aspire linspire to a level of incompetency that can be rivaled only by monkeys post brain-transplant-with-toad surgery. Boing.

I was going through a multi-boot kick.  I had a few flavors of Linux as well as trusty windows installed.  There was a special one week only offer to get Linspire (Then Lindows IIRC) free.  I am not one to turn away free stuff usually, and it was more fodder for my OS playing.  So I downloaded and installed it.  If I knew then what I know now . . .

Their primary source of income isn't the OS itself but their software distribution system.  They have a package installer, like any other linux distribution (and no easier to use than, say, Ubuntus) -- but unlike others, you have to pay a monthly fee to use it. Paying gives you access to some stuff, other stuff you have to pay even more out of pocket for.  It's very capitalistic.  It's not very good, at all, and its only real claim to fame is larger, shinier buttons than other Linux distros -- as if to say "Look at me, I am not Linux and I am not windows. I have giant buttons like a child toy and will hold your hand all the way to the bank."

So you can get Linspire.  You can forfeit access to all windows software while at the same time not gain the robust flexibility of Linux.  And if that's not cool enough for you, it was horrendously unstable.  The only thing you get is the ability to brag to your idiotic windows using friends (I think that's what all Linspire users think of windows users) that you use linux.  Of course, if you're at all perceptive you'll realize you shouldn't mention which distro you're using to anyone but fellow Linspire users. Because real Linux users will know you're an idiot; and windows users will know you're a fraud.  Yes: I passionately hate them. I uber hate them. I passionately uber hate them!

At this point in my story, however, I didn't passionately uber hate them. I was just disappointed and not fond of them.  So I canceled my click and run subscription, wiped the Linspire partitions to put something useful on there and believed that was it. Click and RUN!!!

Alas. The next billing cycle came around and I was charged despite my having canceled it. I was unimpressed but still reasonable.  It took a lengthy correspondence with support, but eventually I got my money back and was assured that I wasn't scheduled for rebilling. My relationship with them was seemingly concluded. Click and RUN!!!

Alas. The next billing cycle came around and I was charged despite my having canceled and having been reassured I wouldn't be rebilled.  This time, I was unable to negotiate a refund. As far as they were concerned, I was using CNR, demanding refunds and thereby getting a free ride.  My insistence that they check records to see I wasn't logging in, wasn't downloading were to no avail. They didn't care that the operating system no longer existed on my computer or that I was no longer using it or that it was disabled in my account and should not, under any circumstances, be rebilled. They didn't care. I was forced to cancel that card to prevent future billing. I believed, finally, it would be the end of my relationship with them. Click and RUN LIKE THE WIND!!!

Alas. Every couple weeks I would receive their newsletter--much like Click and Run, I disabled it in my account. And still it kept coming to the same e-mail address.  I tried going through support to get them stopped, and despite the support personnel assuring me my e-mail address wasn't subscribed, I continued to receive their e-mails.  This battle between them and me continued on--continues to this day!  I realize I could manually create a filter to reject these e-mails, but I shouldn't have to! When I say stop, they should stop! They must stop! They will not stop!  The headers all indicate the messages are being sent to the e-mail address I am attempting to removing, but the message body always says <> in place of my e-mail address. (This message has been sent to <>) -- They can't even get THAT right.  Each time I receive their e-mail, I try to log in to my account to double check that I shouldn't receive their e-mails. But EVERY time I do, I get the same message:

Yowza! Looks like we're quite popular right now, and our servers are experience a very high volume so we can't process your request presently. We apologize for the inconvenience, but please try again a little later. .

So self-important! Oh, so popular! It's probably other desperate schmucks like me trying to turn off their compulsory e-mail messages!! Everything about them is self-important, idiotic and broken. (I should mention, they even fail on the ellipses: it should be three dots, not two!) Oh how I hate them, how I passionately uber hate them.

If I lived closer to their headquarters--or if ever I am passing through--I would handle this like the descendent of an ape that I am, I would show my disdain and make my territorial claim. Each time I received their self-important newsletter (sometimes as often as weekly, usually two to three weeks) I would walk into their offices and piss on their rugs.  Obviously they do not respond to a civilized approach.

I'm starting to feel like Milton from office space. "I'll set the building on fire... "

Tonight, having exhausted every civilized avenue, I decided to e-fling poo.  I'll continue to e-fling poo until they leave me alone.

Spoiler
You idiotic spamming sons of bitches, yet ANOTHER newsletter has dripped from your incompetent cunts into my inbox.  I explicitly unsubscribed through my account interface and I have been "assured" countless times by support that my address has been removed, and yet I continue to receive your self-important, meaningless ass residue excuse for a newsletter in my inbox. MAKE THEM STOP! Is it really necessary to excrete your shit all over my inbox every fucking week despite my pleas for reprieve? STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT!

I do not want to receive your newsletter. Do not send it to crepe [at] jarday.com

With 95/98, I used to re-install every six to eight months.  Beyond that, never.  My last XP system ran 3 or 4 years on the original install without any problems.  I haven't been using vista long enough to say, but I suspect it'll workout about the same as it did with XP--I'll be upgrading to a new PC before I manually re-install the OS.
