I wonder why Google has pushed Gmail so far down on their new vertical navigation bar. Now I can fix it with the Google Bar+ user script, and do additional customizations! Well, for this screenshot I replaced Gmail with DonationCoder.  (requires Greasemonkey or Scriptish for Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Chrome)

Script Summary: Gives new options to the new google toolbar. If the new google bar has not been enabled, this script will enable it. Allows each menu entry to be customized. Allows for a thinner interface. Allows for google Ad blocking. Presets are provided for common menu items (more will be added); If you have an item you think should be a preset please let me know via the discussion link. As of 0.5.6, users are notified of updates right on the google bar!

Web Link Captor / Nice, with one nitpick
« on: January 05, 2012, 01:24 PM »
This is a really nice tool, simple to operate but powerful. I liked that tree structure under Script to Invoke, a lot of scripts could be added and it still wouldn't look cluttered.  Great job on the user interface.

I had some ideas to use it to look up foreign vocabulary on dictionary and pronunciation web sites, but sadly when I pasted lines from my word list, all the Unicode characters displayed as question marks. so I was sad. (That was the inspiration for the Unicode thread I started, by the way.)

28
You are creating an application today. It will not be Unicode compliant. Why? For older programs, it may not be worth the rewrite effort, but if you are writing code from scratch, intended for a worldwide audience, this would seem to be automatic, and yet it doesn't seem to be. What are some of the challenges you face in creating software that leaves the ASCII character set of yesteryear behind (except for backward compatibility)? Be as technical as you want, don't worry about it being over my head. Maybe it will be, but I can still use it as a starting point for further research, and others will benefit.

On the other hand, be as non-technical as you want as well. I think I am seeing a trend of requesting Unicode support for various DonationCoder applications (maybe I am just noticing it more now that I am learning Devanagari script), so I think a lot of people want to know why this isn't easy!

For some reason now, if I go to Manage Search Engines within Firefox (click on the search bar dropdown, and click Manage Search Engines..), click Edit Keyword, type in a keyword, and click OK, I can no longer click the second OK, as seen in the screenshot. This happens even in safe mode. It did happen right after trying to work with some Search mode plugins (Web Search Pro), however that is now uninstalled, and it happens even in safe modes with addons disabled.

Going to try in order unless someone has a better idea:
1. Reinstalling this version of Firefox
2. Reverting to previous version of Firefox

I remember doing this before about a year or so ago, and I've done it again. I clicked on this forum expecting some kind of programmer version of Mad Libs.

Is there a way in CSS to have a selector for all text with a Unicode range of say, 0900–097F? (Assume the HTML does use any language tags.)

Trying to see if this problem can be resolved using Stylish and a custom userstyle for Unicode characters in that range.

Yesterday I discovered the Siddhanta font for displaying Devanagari. Today I discovered that most of the Devanagari on the web is in Arial, Helvetica, or sans-serif font, even in things like Devanagari conjunct tables, where it makes no sense. Why would they not use at least Mangal? Since it is easy enough for web designers to specify a list of display fonts in order of preference, what are they thinking? Are they so grateful we have Unicode these days, they just don't care what font it is in?

Any idea why on earth would that be, and how do I shoehorn in alternative fonts generally? The closest thing I've come up with is the FontFinder extension for Firefox, but that will only let you change the font one character or word at a time or the whole web page, and you have to do it manually after the page loads.

Webcam Video Diary / WebcamVideoDiary - Instant Hit with the Kids
« on: November 22, 2011, 11:47 AM »
After seeing my kids' reaction to Skype and Audacity..I attached a webcam to the kids' computer, installed WVD, and it was an instant hit. Thanks! (Not that they need further incentive to be glued to the computer, but I'd much rather they play with WVD than Webkinz (the web site = Farmville for kids), and we can curate the best recordings into a family video scrapbook.)

Finally got a chance to do some wi-fi testing because I seem to be losing a lot of bandwidth these days unless I skip the router altogether. This seems to be the case regardless of whether I go through wi-fi or an ethernet connection through the router.

Living Room / Google's Π-Shaped Menu With More, More, and Even More
« on: October 17, 2011, 09:14 PM »
Is it just me? Or could this be improved? (Other than the red lines)
MoreMoreMore.png

Shopping is on there twice.
News is on there twice.
How about Google learns which items I actually click and floats them up to the top menu and hides the rest? Since I'm signed into Google anyway, it should figure out my habits? This might be the odd case where Microsoft-style personalized menus might actually work.

I am determined to finally learn how to use FARR effectively this year. I have downloaded 37 FARR Demo screencasts and I am going to put them on a DVD, and I have been using DVD Styler. It looks like it is going to work, but the thumbnails for each chapter (file) aren't very useful and I would rather have it copy the filenames and use them for the chapter links instead without too much work.

I should note I downloaded and converted them with VideoDownloadHelper using "smart filenames" so the filenames are descriptive of the content, for example: FARR Demo #2 - Basic Search, Scoring, and Launching.mp4.

Is anyone aware of any DVD menu program that will do this? DVD Styler is easy to use but I didn't see this option.

I want to run a virus scan any time a mass storage device is attached to one of my home computers. What I want is for the device to be locked down from being used until this virus scan completes. I currently am an avast user, is there any way to configure avast or any other program to do this?

StanzaIMG_0048.PNG
iBooksIMG_0051.PNG

The ebook is Modern Perl, which is provided by the author in epub format as well as PDF. Notice how Stanza cuts off the long lines, which is a known issue with Stanza. However iBooks is painfully slow on my iPod Touch and is generally considered inferior for good reason. Yet it wraps the whole line and displays it.

I am also giving Calibre, an ebook manager, another shot lately. When I attempted to use it before, getting ebooks from my computer to Stanza was painfully unreliable*; now there are two new options for iOS sync including sending ebooks them via iTunes and that is actually 100 times less painful and actually works. If you do it that way, however, iBooks sees the epubs and Stanza doesn't (on iOS, the app kind of owns the documents it opens, kind of like Palm OS 5 which I thought we were evolving away from.) iBooks is painfully slow, but at least it is not cutting off lines like the ones shown above.

* With the caveat that I was a little slow to figure out I needed to reserve an IP address for the iPod Touch and so I may have contributed to the unreliability of the initial method.

Living Room / Security by obscurity fails again (RSA)
« on: June 07, 2011, 08:36 PM »
RSA Security will replace virtually every one of the 40 million SecurID tokens currently in use as a result of the hacking attack the company disclosed back in March. The EMC subsidiary issued a letter to customers acknowledging that SecurID failed to protect defense contractor Lockheed Martin, which last month reported a hack attempt....

RSA Security Chairman Art Coviello said that the reason RSA had not disclosed the full extent of the vulnerability because doing so would have revealed to the hackers how to perform further attacks. RSA's customers might question this reasoning; the Lockheed Martin incident suggests that the RSA hackers knew what to do anyway—failing to properly disclose the true nature of the attack served only to mislead RSA's customers about the risks they faced.

I suppose this is old news, but it was new to me. The Windows Mobile version of Pocket Informant (not to be confused with the Windows Phone version) is now free, and unsupported (but it does have a thick PDF manual).

Living Room / Choosing what movie to watch
« on: January 29, 2011, 09:50 AM »
For this poll, family can also mean any group of people you watch movies with (although I would expect a group of friends to be more individualistic than a family). I am curious about other people's movie watching habits. Based on the assumptions made by movie tracking software, movie watching seems to be treated as purely an individual activity. For example, often there is a "wish" toggle showing someone wishes to watch the movie. But not a way to specify if it is one you alone want to watch, or one you want to watch with your spouse, or one you want to watch with the whole family. Sometimes you can work around this if the software is customizable enough, usually it isn't.

The idea is that there are people who just want to watch a movie, but have no idea what movie to watch, so someone else falls into the role of deciding what movie to watch.

Also, I am thinking mainly of movies watched at home. If you watch a movie at a movie theatre, you are limited to the choices there and it tends to be an impulse decision I think, so there is probably not much of a perceived reason to keep a list.

Living Room / Mobipocket, LIT, or Kindle - which is best?
« on: October 20, 2010, 03:02 PM »
If I have a choice of buying a book in Mobipocket, LIT, or Kindle format, and the prices are similar, which should be my preference? In case it matters: some of the books I am interested in may have a fairly complicated layout and I will be reading on an iPod Touch.

Living Room / iPod Touch 2nd Generation vs 3rd Generation?
« on: October 18, 2010, 07:44 PM »
If I buy a second generation iPod Touch off ebay, what would I be missing compared to third generation, in terms of firmware, upgradablility, jailbreakability or anything else I should keep in mind?

Living Room / PDAdb.net's PDA Chooser
« on: October 16, 2010, 09:54 PM »

You can easily find the perfect mobile device with PDAchooser too. The PDAchooser is the simplified variant of PDAmaster and it is optimzed for quick and efficient device searching. It provides less features but easier usage and clearer user interface than PDAmaster. You can also compare the results after the query.

Lost this site for a while, and just found it again after a few days. Helpful in searching for PDA's or smartphones within certain specifications such as screen resolution.

It's time to think about replacing my Dell Axim X51V, the second PDA which I had to retire due to a bad digitizer.

I am checking ebay, the best thing I am finding is an HTC Diamond. I consistently am seeing the Sprint version selling for around $100, or $150 with a charging dock. I think people hate Sprint so much it brings the price downl.  I don't intend to use it as a phone. I have a Net10 phone for voice ($100 every 180 days and more talking minutes than I need.) and there is no data that is so urgent to me that it justifies paying $60/month for a data plan. A daily sync gives me more data than I can possibly read or play, and I am usually not that far from a PC anyway. And I like the feature set of the HTC Diamond, and I plan to sync over USB or the charging dock if that's possible.

Since I don't plan on using the phone, is there another "Windows Mobile device in $100-150 range on ebay" anyone would care to recommend, with or without a phone built in?

By the way, I have had horrible luck with the digitizers going bad on both the PDAs I have had, Tungsten T3 and Dell Axim X51v, any hints at picking something where the digitizer may last longer are welcome, I wasn't very good at replacing the digitizer in my T3 and don't want to try again with my Axim (which also seems to have some power issues).

GPS doesn't matter so much, but I am assuming I could use it for something even without a data plan (maybe a pedometer?) - correct me if I am wrong.

General Software Discussion / Rename text file based on contents
« on: October 09, 2010, 05:06 PM »
I have about 100 files I would like to rename based on the contents of the first line. For example, if I have a file File_23.txt and the first line is HG.ColorCodes.UndergroundCables, then I want the file to be renamed HG.ColorCodes.UndergroundCables.txt. When I Google this, what I find are ways to do this from a batch file, or from awk, or from VBScript. I can do that myself, but because of all the competition between file renamers, I would think there would be a way to do it from a GUI somehow. I am not seeing it in BRU or RenameMaster, though. BRU can read from a text file but you have to hardcode the new name for each file in that text file, so that is not what I want. Maybe there is something I missed?

EDIT: A cursory glance at the web site suggests Pfrank may be able to do it, I will let you know,

Has anyone had any positive experiences in exporting Outlook Notes so that it could be imported by any other note taking software (other than OneNote)?
I find the Outlook built-in export to CSV a little squirrelly (I've never seen CSV files with multiline records in any other program). Specifically I tried importing these CSV files into ThunderNote as is recommended but it appears that doesn't work no matter what I try. And it looks like I could import Tomboy for Windows notes if I wrote some custom code to split and XML-ify the .csv export into .note files, but it seems like a lot of hassle.

And if that weren't impossible enough, ideally I would want to be able to edit the notes from a PDA as well. This may affect the choice of my next PDA OS.

OneNote actually seems to be the best bet since they have a PDA version that doesn't require an always-on internet connectivity, I didn't really care for the desktop version (2007, haven't tried 2010 yet).

Mainly (today) I care about simple text based notes.

49
I have been experimenting in slow motion with Thunderbird, to see if it is possible for me to use it for what I use Outlook for, as a hub for the Four Pillars of PIM: tasks, notes, calendar items, and contacts.

1. How do I stop the Mail Account Setup prompt from appearing every time I launch Thunderbird or go to Address Book? I use Gmail for personal mail.
Screenshot - 10_5_2010 , 11_04_32 AM.jpg

EDITED: I put it my Gmail address and it was very smart about pulling up IMAP and SMTP server from a database, which is impressive but I don't really want to access my Gmail locally at this time.

EDITED 2: Discovered by accident that if I go ahead and set up a mail account and remove the account, it stops nagging me but for some reason I can only remove the IMAP server not the SMTP server.

2. Lightning seems to be the canonical add-on for tasks and calendar, contacts are built in, is there a notes add-on someone could recommend?

(EDIT 3: So far, it looks like ThunderNote)

3. Is there a good way to sync tasks, notes, calendar items, and contacts in Thunderbird with a PDA (any OS)?  I see BirdieSync but it only seems to sync 1 to 3 of these, depending on OS.

BirdieSync™ allows synchronization of your Windows Mobile device (contacts, events, tasks and mails) or your iPhone (contacts) with Thunderbird™ with Lightning extension installed and Sunbird™ on your PC.

Living Room / Google Reader kills support for sites without RSS feeds
« on: September 25, 2010, 05:37 PM »
Google turns off the track changes feature on September 30. This was the short-lived Google Reader feature that let you add web sites that didn't have RSS feeds and it would autogenerate one that had any new content.

It was handy while it lasted.

Like the official blog says, you can use Page2RSS  as an alternative.
