Had similar behavior, but when the original link was pasted in the location area and tried again, it worked here.

Perhaps there's some kind of redirect or cookie check?

I just wanted to point out that i think its a terrible idea for software to do bad things to a user's computer or files if it suspects that it has been pirated.

I tend to lean in this direction too -- are software developers so skilled that these features might not be buggy/problematic sometimes in unexpected damaging ways?

Perhaps it's not worth your time -- I think Qubes is likely to be around for a while though, so may be there'll be other reasons to try it in the future :)
