Installation was slightly annoying, though, since there's no images available. I pondered whether I should accept running the root filesystem as vfat (since that's what I could create from my work macbook) - but ended up transferring a Ubuntu ISO to an usb pendrive, boot my old laptop from that, and get an ext4 root fs.

Thanks for reporting back on your success :)

Perhaps your work-around for getting an ext4 root fs is less trouble than trying to achieve the same end with something like VirtualBox (possibly with its extension pack).

Congratulations on your working environment :)

On a related note, came across the following recently:

If I had a RPi2 (he he), I might consider the following:

The consequences of continued technical development? :)

331
So did you get one?

332
Perhaps folks have seen it already, but came across "Pathfinding for Tower Defense" today.

Found the interactive maps to be of interest.

333
If this is a major problem i can work on attempting to fix it. But for now it kinda works with chrome :P

So far, for my case I think it's fine the way it is.

Thanks!

334
Very interesting -- have you tested with cutting specific portions of web pages in web browsers?

Ah, I see your docs mention issues with Chrome.

Spoiler
Thanks for using outlines in your PDF docs :)

335
Very interesting link -- thanks for sharing that!

Depending on precise feature set, a bit of this may be shoe-hornable in to subtitle formats.

IIUC, the new kid on the block is WebVTT -- supposedly supported in a variety of browsers:

  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebVTT#Compatibility

Apparently at least version 2.2.0 of VLC supports it too.

I mentioned browsers because IIUC the used components are often reusable for apps -- indeed, it's fairly straight-forward to make a simple video player now.

But to answer the original question, IIUC, there is no widely accepted way to do bookmarks for videos.

It does seem less likely, but perhaps after a certain amount of time...

On a related note, below is a thread with more detailed discussion including mention of alternative devices:

Very interesting device, thanks for sharing.

Interesting to see if anyone manages to "extend" or "modify" the system that ships with it...

I'm using NixOS.

If the compilation experience is anything like Firefox, I'm not sure I want to take on having to do that every time there's an update :)

340
Thanks for the various ideas :)

I wasn't a fan of the UI redesign, but I thought I'd give the new UI a chance for a while.

One aspect I like about it is that I can customize what shows up in "the menu".

I had tried placing the search bar inside the menu and accessing it via Ctrl+K, but I haven't figured out how to access the other items using only the keyboard.  Without being able to get to and navigate within the new menu using only the keyboard, it's not nearly as useful as it could be for me.

I haven't taken the Classic Theme Restorer plunge yet -- do you know if it requires a lot of tweaking?  When I installed it and took a look at the options I was overwhelmed :)

I'm not using Windows much recently and Palemoon doesn't appear to be available for the *NIX I'm using so that doesn't appear to be an option for me ATM.

Spoiler
With respect to being able to customize one's UI, that kind of thing seems sorely lacking in the mobile world (well, at least on Android AFAICT) where I keep getting the feeling that the folks releasing apps are trying to manipulate us out of using certain features and nudging us toward others.  Not a nice feeling at all.

Perhaps it's also that the underlying SDK doesn't necessarily make it easy to provide this kind of functionality...I can see that once users start customizing to their own tastes, devs have a harder time taking their software in directions they'd like to -- at least I think customizability is often add odds with that desire.

This menu thing got me thinking that there might even be folks trying to explicitly limit keyboard shortcuts -- to nudge folks to use the mouse more.  Perhaps because without using the pointer, it is so much less likely in most major browsers that one would click on things...

341
Not having much luck finding a keyboard shortcut for the "Hamburger Menu" (aka PanelUI-button) in Firefox.

In Chromium, Alt+F, Alt+E, and F10 followed by space all seem to work.

Anyone know a keyboard shortcut for Firefox?  Or possibly how one might be assigned?

Sadly no good answers here:

I liked some of the apps at f-droid, [...], but is it safe to use apps from it ?

I don't have an answer to your question, but below is a bit of how I see things.

With F-Droid, IIUC, the idea is that what's there is compiled from source code which you can examine.  As to whether some things haven't been tampered with, I don't know -- e.g. by the folks who are performing the compilation and making the results available.  I don't think the people who are compiling have examined the source code of the various projects in detail to try to assess security aspects (e.g. for design and/or implementation errors).  Deliberate holes in the original source code seem less likely, but it still seems possible.

With the Play Store, AFAIU, what's there has not likely been tampered with since release by the original developer because of the digital signature scheme (though there has been at least one significant case of the scheme not working as expected and being exploited) -- but you don't really know what was in the source in the first place nor what might have snuck in during compilation -- most folks do not have access to the source code for most of the things on the Play Store.

With recent events, I think it's not too unreasonable to be thinking that if there's some place that one can hide something, sooner or later someone's likely to think of hiding things in those harder-to-examine places.  It appears that in many cases it's economical to do so.

On a side note, I had the impression that you are/were interested in developing for Android -- so I thought that F-Droid might provide source code you might examine for studying purposes.

343
If you aren't already familiar with it, I suggest also checking:

  https://f-droid.org/

AFAIU, almost everything there also has source code available.

344
For a simple PDF reader, MuPDF -- if you really want to, you can build it from source too :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Why won't my laptop run Firefox?
« on: March 05, 2015, 03:57 AM »
If nothing else, if the hw is good you could do a complete wipe and install and at least have a running Laptop with a clean OS on it.

I'd not be so hasty to do this unless there is a recovery option available (alternatively, clone the existing drive and keep that or the source drive safe somewhere for future reference) -- if the OS that's on there is or "inherits" from an OEM install, there may be OEM-specific files that having access to later may make one's life easier.

I agree that determining the key via the likes of ProduKey as suggested is a good idea.

Thanks for the newsletter :)

On a possibly related note, are you familiar with Rosetta Code?

349
In the last week or so I used SystemRescueCD to pull data off of an HDD -- the contained GNU ddrescue was quite useful.  There are some related utilities ddrutilty (among other things has some nice NTFS-related tools) and ddrescueview which don't appear to be on the ISO, but I was able to fetch them (one had a precompiled binary and the other was easy to build from source) while booted into SystemRescueCD.

It took some studying to learn how to use GNU ddrescue (note: there's another program with a similar purpose and name), but the results so far appear to be that I was able to recover all except one file.

The following things seemed worth considering before getting started:

  • Consider practicing on something you don't care about too much -- and consider doing so before an emergency.
  • Arrange for some place for the logfile(s) to be saved to -- I used some USB memory.
  • Arrange for a device to save GNU ddrescue output (not necessarily logfile) to -- typically one is likely to want something that is larger in capacity than the sum of the partitions one wishes to attempt recovery for.
  • Don't overwrite past logfile on subsequent runs -- work off of a copy.
  • Consider an initial run that doesn't try hard to recover much -- if you decide later you want to wipe the good areas, the logfile for the initial run may present less trouble.
  • If dealing with NTFS, examine ddrutility -- there's a contained tool that may make the pass through an NTFS filesystem faster.
  • Don't attempt individual file recovery off of a fresh result of running GNU ddrescue -- clone first and work off of that.

These are not faults with the documentation, FWIW :)

I was happy to learn that sometimes even HDDs with trouble can be "mostly wiped" by leveraging an appropriate GNU ddrescue log file and an appropriate invocation of the utility using its fill mode to target "good" areas.

Have you tried the browsers that won't run using a freshly created account?
