Found this promising bit at:

  http://sourceforge.n...onth-freefilesync-2/

SF: What is the next big thing for FreeFileSync?

Zenju: The most-requested feature currently is synchronization with smart phones. This is top priority and will be in one of the future versions of FreeFileSync. However. I can’t make any promises as to when it will be available.

Perhaps also of interest:

SF: What is the software development philosophy for FreeFileSync?

Zenju: FreeFileSync takes a drastic approach concerning software development. If something is not right, be it software design or source code, it is fixed, no matter how small or insignificant the problem seems. This seems like a lot of work for tiny problems but it pays off significantly when applied consistently. The complete code base, not only of FreeFileSync but all of my software projects, always matches the current level of my expertise. When I learn something new, I apply and update everything. As my understanding of both technical and human interface problems deepens, the number of things to fix decreases over time and my time investment shrinks. Strategically, this is an advantage because working on the FreeFileSync code base is always fun without this historic baggage.

The advantages of constant code refactoring are well known. For example, the C++11 standard had a profound impact on the code base. As soon as the common set of feature supported by compilers on Windows, OS X, and Linux allowed it, I migrated the FreeFileSync code gradually to using the most recent and improved ways of programming. For me, software development is taken literally and whenever there is something that should be done differently, I believe is never too late to do it now.

Living Room / Tindie
« on: May 19, 2015, 05:36 AM »
While looking into how to get experience with JTAG using a Raspberry Pi, came across tindie:

Tindie is the largest marketplace online for open hardware. Thousands of our inventions are open source. The schematics and source code are available for anyone to study, remix, or even clone.

via https://tindie.zende...open-hardware-policy

Has any one picked up anything via tindie?

Found a "USB Lithium Ion coin cell battery charger LIR2032, CR2032 replacement":

  https://www.tindie.c...-cr2032-replacement/

(Though it may be that care and timing are needed to stop the charging appropriately.)

I don't use Chrome, so I have no understanding of the "epcnnfbjfcgphgdmggkamkmgojdagdnn" part

AFAICT, that's pretty normal for items appearing in the Chrome Web Store:

  https://chrome.google.com/webstore/

Each of the app, extension, and theme links I examined had that kind of string at the end of its associated URL -- just figured it's for uniqueness sake, but have not verified.

FWIW, the following somewhat non-technical aspect had me leaning the other way (i.e. not favoring ublock, but rather ublock origin):

Managed to establish a serial connection today -- without solder even :)

Perhaps the next step is updating to something that will lead to a more successful boot.

FWIW, I think there may be something relevant starting here:

Sorry double-post.

To make up for that...

Here's something from MS -- IIUC one of their research folks (Cynthia Dwork) is the creator(?) of Differential Privacy (mentioned in a RAPPOR paper FWIW):

In 1977 Dalenius articulated a desideratum for statistical databases: nothing about an individual should be learnable from the database that cannot be learned without access to the database. We give a general impossibility result showing that a formalization of Dalenius’ goal along the lines of semantic security cannot be achieved. Contrary to intuition, a variant of the result threatens the privacy even of someone not in the database. This state of affairs suggests a new measure, differential privacy, which, intuitively, captures the increased risk to one’s privacy incurred by participating in a database. The techniques developed in a sequence of papers [8, 13, 3], culminating in those described in [12], can achieve any desired level of privacy under this measure. In many cases, extremely accurate information about the database can be provided while simultaneously ensuring very high levels of privacy.

I think Atom does the same, but it's open source, so you can remove it in theory though most won't in practice.

I'm not sure that the first time the data is sent for Atom that you know that your MAC address is harvested or that you know soon enough to prevent it.  When I tried Atom, I did not feel good about this part.

On a more positive note, Chrome seems to use RAPPOR - a pretty interesting approach to collecting data.

Randomized Aggregatable Privacy-Preserving Ordinal Response, or RAPPOR, is a technology for crowdsourcing statistics from end-user client software, anonymously, with strong privacy guarantees. In short, RAPPORs allow the forest of client data to be studied, without permitting the possibility of looking at individual trees. By applying randomized response in a novel manner, RAPPOR provides the mechanisms for such collection as well as for efficient, high-utility analysis of the collected data. In particular, RAPPOR permits statistics to be collected on the population of client-side strings with strong privacy guarantees for each client, and without linkability of their reports.

Some folks at MS appear to be involved in research in this area, so may be they use something analogous in some of their products.

The simple answer is that our brains lie to us.

I like to think that there's no ill-will involved here...but wait a minute :P

FWIW, here's some of what Wikipedia currently has to say about Ahamkara:

Ahaṃkāra (अहंकार) is a Sanskrit term that is related to the ego and egoism - that is, the identification or attachment of one's ego.

Vedic philosophy teaches that when one's mind is in a state of ahamkara, one is in a state of subjective illusion, where the mind has bound the concept of one's self with an external thing. That thing can be a tangible, material object, or it can be a concept (such as the concept of the fight for peace). The ego is involved in constructing the illusion.

Noted the following via the ifixit link:

  http://www.eesc.euro...press-releases.29603

For the first time, an EU institution is looking into the positive aspects of a total ban on planned obsolescence: more jobs, better consumer protection and a boost to sustainable development. The EESC has today issued an opinion on product lifetimes and consumer information to combat the business strategy of obsolescence.

Recently came across and have started reading "Think Stats: Probability and Statistics for Programmers" by Allen B. Downey.

There are some other "Think X" books that look interesting too, where X might be "Python", "Bayes", "Complexity" or something else.

Oh, and:

...books are available under free license that allow readers to copy and distribute the text; they are also free to modify it, which allows them to adapt the book to different needs, and to help develop new material.

These books are available in a variety of electronic formats; some are also for sale in hard copy.

Found the Textbook Manifesto by the same author:

Students should read and understand textbooks.

More details at: http://greenteapress.com/manifesto.html

Sounded pretty reasonable.

From the way that they're marketing it, and the 'interview' process and the reasoning behind that, I don't know if it will get into the hands of someone that would do that.

Looking at:

  http://store.sony.co...onyClickHere:DPStore

somehow I'm getting the feeling one can be obtained in a fairly straight-forward manner.  May be things have changed?  The price seems to have dropped a fair bit :)

FWIW, I came across that link via:

where I saw the following:

FWIW, I failed to find uBlock Origin via searching the chrome web store (though I read claims to the contrary in a few places) -- there was a link that worked mentioned in the following though:

General Software Discussion / Lists of "Rogue Security Software"?
« on: April 05, 2015, 04:56 PM »
Came across this:

  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rogue_security_software

Wikipedia currently has the following definition for "Rogue Security Software":

a rogue (a form of Internet fraud using computer malware) that deceives or misleads users into paying money for fake or simulated removal of malware (so is a form of ransomware) — or it claims to get rid of, but instead introduces malware to the computer.

Not sure how up-to-date the list is.

Found some other lists that seemed clearly out-of-date by a year or more.

Apart from asking around, I guess if one is considering something for installation and it's small enough jotti, virustotal, and the like are likely to give useful feedback about the candidate in question.

He he.

How many years 'til embedding of devices within one's body is widespread?

Although raw device access seems like it might work, I was thinking one might boot some live iso image in VirtualBox (or equivalent), create an ext4 fs image via the booted virtual environment, copy/share the resulting image to the host OS and use the likes of dd [1] to write the result to an SD card.

Booting up another machine might be simpler and quicker ofc -- but if one really didn't want to reboot... ;)

[1] IIRC, there are various implementations of dd for Mac OS X, Windows, etc.  But I take it you're quite aware of that sort of thing.

ArkOS have stated they'll update their distro to use the RasPi2 when they get their hands on it.

Hadn't heard of that -- looks pretty interesting!  Thanks for sharing.
