The InstallAware offer has now closed.
The offer started on Tuesday and went until Friday. During that period this blog had 1379 page loads from 859 unique visitors. Sinan Karaca reports to me that they gave away 56 free licenses worth $83,944.00.

See http://blog.deployme...ve-away-results.html for details.

Adventures of Baby Cody / Re: A Map of where Baby Cody Visits?
« on: October 26, 2009, 07:53 AM »
Great work!

Is there any chance that the description of a visit can contain a link to the 'next' visit, so that you can easily follow the visit in chronological order?

In a recent blog comment on Deployment Engineering, Sinan Karaca posted:

In fact, anybody reading this blog and wanting to check out just how revolutionary InstallAware is, send sales at installaware.com an email with the subject "Painter License" and we'll send out a complimentary Developer license your way. Till this Friday only :)

Cheers,
Sinan

General Software Discussion / Re: Choice of application installer?
« on: October 08, 2009, 06:19 AM »
I have to second Eóin here.

My background is in application repacking with Wise Package Studio, so Windows Installer just makes sense to me.  So when it came time to create packages for my own software I couldn't go past WiX, and I recently discovered WiXEdit and it's got a lot of promise.

But I also have to agree with lanux, for simple stuff (ie. CrazyLittleFingers) you can't go past a good ol' zip.

tranglos,

I'd like to address all the points in your opening post about a better CMS, but I have a baby sleeping in my lap and it's a little bit difficult to type.

So I just want to find out your thoughts on ModX.

I believe I could implement your ideas in a couple of hours with ModX.  The power of ModX comes from it's use of Template Variables (TV's), which give you the 'fill out a form' capability for your content.  Chunks are repeatable pieces of html code (eg. an application name, a version number, an image).  Snippets are repeatable pieces of php code, and they accept parameters.

One example on one of a community website I manage, is that each community group has it's own calender.  I have placed a TV in the template which lets the group specify their calender username.  There is also a checkbox that allows them to toggle the calender.

So by checking the box and putting in your username, you now have a calender relevant to your group.

Another example on a website I'm currently developing is a product listing much like you specified.  I have a form that lets you edit each product, it has a name, description, price etc.  I then have a snippet in my product listing template that retrieves these details, the snippet calls on a chunk of html for it's template.

So if even want to change the look and feel of the product listing, all I need to do is edit 1 piece of html.

So there should be two ways of linking. One, by the database ID of an article.
ModX does this.

I stumbled across ModX about a year ago when we were researching a CMS to use for GraniteNet, and the more I use ModX the more I like it.  I now have 3 projects in the pipeline all based on ModX.

Anyway, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

let me know if you need any assistance with it, i've been using it for 6 months or more now...

Mouser, something I find that works for me is to set aside a little time (half an hour or so) to plan your day for tomorrow, this helps me go over the things i've achieved today and organise my schedule for anything I didn't get time todo today.

I also find it best if it's the second last thing you do that day.  So for me, I finish work at 4pm, so at 3:30 I plan my day for tomorrow and then finish off anything I need to for that day.  This way you don't get to the end of your day and skip you're planning for the next day.

Here's a 3 button version of MouseControl for those of us with 'normal' mice (requested by k0r0z1f)

Usage
  • Left Click: Play/Pause
  • Right Click: Next
  • Mouse Wheel: Volume
  • Middle Click: Previous
  • ESC: Exit

I think we should call the fundraiser over around midnight on April 1st, New York time.
(that is, it will go 24 hours into April by the NY time clock).

Good idea, that'll catch all those last minute donations from those of us in *other* time zones... :)

where is the thermometer?

 :D

Look at the top of forum. You can see the red liquid trying to reach the 8k mark. That whole instrument is called as thermometer. I tried to explain thinking i'm explaining to Mayans.  :P
if your web page images are agressively cached by your ISP or browser you might not see it, its on the banner of every page now through march.  try ctrl+F5 to refresh the page. you should see it eventually.

In all seriousness, I still have not seen this magical thermometer, 4 different computers, 3 different ISPs, 3 different browsers, 2 different os's and 6 different cities..  must be that Australian internet filter k.rudd keeps threatening promising

we can make a stop motion short, adventures of the cody mug.

Yeah!  We should get people to upload pics of their mug in various locations, at the park, at the beach, on a swing, swimming with ducks....

There is definately no one size fits all productivity system and neither should there be.

App, I think you hit the nail on the head when you pointed out that Mouser came up with a system that works for him on day 1, I too had noticed that and already he's made the comment that he want's to 'take it to the next level', whatever that is.

I think the beauty of the GOE 2006/2007 experiements was learning about people's adaptations of other people's productivity systems, and maybe this should have been promoted more or the actual purpose of the GOE, in reality it seems to have been an accidental by-product.

For me, the idea of getting organised is appealling, but I'm very cycnical of a system, especially one you have to pay for, because I'm reasonably certain it's not going to work for me.  It's the same reason I look to freeware/donationware applications or full featured trial versions.

edit: typos

« on: February 24, 2009, 10:10 PM »
Every AHK I've written, including Trout, that saves position subtracts these eight pixels as well as 46 vertically.

posw := posw - 8
posh := posh - 46

 :D

That's reassuring, I thought I was going mad when I had to use 8 and 46 for my app...  :D
