Black Mesa and 9 other games have gotten the Greenlight!
Good news! Thanks for the followup!

Will AHK allow you to execute commands via the run dialog?
I believe it does. You should only need to put the .exe in a folder that is in $PATH.

4. Is already part of the Apple philosophy ;)
Not really, they are just incapable of making (buying?) decent CD burners and decided to say "it's the future" not tu use them :P
Just yesterday, my MacBook destroyed me 4 CDs (while attempting to burn linux, actually. maybe it's selective?)

Thanks for the heads-up!

Don't forget to vote it up on Steam Greenlight so that you can get it, appropriately, on Steam.

Cool! Voted up to :)

Most of the developers at my current job are on OSX laptops. A bunch of them started cursing some months ago after installing whatever-cat-named-update because their systems got bogged down (disk paging, beach ball icon, and sometime systems so unresponsive they had to hardboot them) - seems like Apple messed up the memory manager, majorly. Not something you'll see if you're just drinking caffè latte and not using your shiny laptop for facebook and hipstagram - but definitely if you're actually using the machine.
As someone who has been using OSX for over two years (an imac and a macbook pro), I can confirm this. Memory management in OSX makes no sense, the system is constantly paging stuff even though there's more than enough free memory for everything. Almost every time I leave eclipse open during the night, when I return on the next day and set focus on the window I have to watch the beach ball for a few minutes while it pages back stuff; also, usually it's faster just to kill eclipse and reopen it than wait for it to be paged in again. Also, we have 20+ macs at my workplace, and around 50% of them have had to go back to apple for fixing various stuff; all the 2year+ ones have serious marks all over the screen similar to sunburn, despite the fact that none get direct sunlight.

A related complaint: I see the beach ball at least once a week, apparently for no reason: in this situation usually the memory is half free and the CPU isn't being used at all. Also, I can see more youtube videos at the same time in my girlfriend's phone than on either of my macs (more than one is pushing it). And I can't use this awesome stuff with any of the macs because it's simply too slow (both macs are dual cores with 4gb ram) and the laptop will burn a hole on whatever it is resting on.

Sorry for the rant, but I really could go on forever on why you do not want to buy a mac. The fact that it runs something that looks like unix is awesome, though. (and the touchpads, mice and keyboards are the best invention ever)

Ooops. Didn't see that. :(
Locked this thread :) Please reply here.

Also, another way of doing this: keeping multiple profile folders. I know in previous versions of Opera you could pass the  profile as a command line argument, I suppose you can do something similar in ff.

86
Isn't this similar to the concept of "sessions"? Loading a session on demand?
I know Opera has this (even though I think there's no way to start opera from a specific session, you have to launch it and then switch sessions. also, you'd have to save the session in the end). Not sure if there's something similar for firefox.
If there isn't an extension that does this, there sure should be, I also would find it useful.

I've dome something similar to this using tab stacking in opera. However, this implies that all tabs from all sessions are loaded in memory at the same time. (actually, not true, since no Opera only loads tabs when you select them).

This is really awesome :)
Also, I have that site (this is colossal) in my google reader, it updates about twice a week and usually with fantastic stuff!

Alt+Tab still works (as expected) just fine. Desktop App behavior hasn't changed either.
Ok, glad to know that :) Thanks

It sucks that some tasks require going to FORMEtRo, though - it would be nice if one could just ignore that part (and perhaps not even install it) if not wanted.
What do you mean? I expected it would be how you described: metro is there, but if you want you can not use it at all.

« on: August 22, 2012, 10:13 AM »
I just read this other article: Why I’m uninstalling Windows 8 which some particularly scary statements:
Window management is a pain in the arse

Metro apps don’t have any window controls. If you want to swap between apps, you have to make a convoluted mouse gesture - move the mouse to the top left of the screen, and then down to select the window. You can’t minimise the app, and there’s no on-screen preview of what’s running to help you quickly switch between programs.
Does anyone know if windows 8 banned the alt-tab or if we can't have two windows side-by-side? Or does the "desktop app" work pretty much as in previous versions and this reviewer just doesn't know how to use it?

General Software Discussion / Re: VLC - Is it worth it still?
« on: August 21, 2012, 05:10 AM »
I was never a big fan of VLC, mostly because its default keyboard shortcuts make no sense to me (I know they can be changed) and the subtitles look awful. However, I often find that there's some stuff that the system codecs can't decode properly and I have to go back to VLC. So, I suppose that if you're OK with VLC, I'd stick to it to avoid having to sometimes switch back.

Also, even if you can't tell the difference between 320kbps MP3 and no-quality-lost FLACs today (I'll be honest and admit that I definitely can't on just about anything), who knows what quality audio gear you might purchase in the future? Better not throwing quality away :)
+1! Also, music that may sound OK in bad hardware, may in fact sound terrible in good gear. Recently I had problems with some MP3s that sounded OK in my macbook's terrible speakers, but when I tried them on decent headphones, they gave me headaches due to background noise.

yes, it takes up more space, but considering how much work it is ripping 400+ CDs, it's stupid not doing it right from the get-go
+1!  Also, isn't the €/GB relation much better in hard drives than DVDs? With the money you spare in using hard drives, you can buy more space to use a better encoding for the CDs ;)

Why wait until closer to 10/26 to show the whole list at one time?
I suspect that they will try to get confirmations from the people who submitted their sites to the list. At least that's what I'd do before releasing a "final" list.

You could try CSV Editor that has a lot of options specifically for csv files, also available in a Unicode-edition, and on top of that is free software :)
That looks like an awesome recommendation
