Found Deals and Discounts / Re: aShampoo Burning Studio 11
« on: September 24, 2012, 06:17 PM »
Hi Tinman, any chance you could add "Burning Studio" to the title in the OP.
Will make it easier to find, thanks!

I got version 11. I havent tried much with it yet, but it's not working out well for me so far:

  • burn .mp4 file to DVD - gave a codec error (I then installed DVD Flick and that worked fine)
  • the "Add" dialogue for data discs is pretty wonky - sub-folders show sometimes, sometimes not, sometimes some. I get it now, they're trying to hide all sub-folders, but not successfully
  • adding folders to a disc via the "Add" dialogue is almost impossible - I had to get the folder path and paste it. That may be intentional, but not helpful to me.

I think I'll leave it rest for a month or two, hopefully they'll bring out an update...
  I Changed the subject title...
I haven't had the problems you listed yet, but I haven't done a data disk burn yet.  I normally just copy/paste in Windows Explorer for data with InCD running in the background.
Under "Settings>Service-Channel" you can turn off advertisements, announcements and other messages.
Only problem I had was with the DVD +R DL media that I was using, kept getting a disk error.  I tried another brand (Not Memorex) and it works just fine now.  I've always had problems with the Memorex brand...  And note that their customer support went into action as soon as I emailed them with the problem.  If your having an issue, you should report it to them.  It may be something simple....

Tinman you are exactly right....that's the goal of my site...
Which is exactly why I posted about this site on this forum.  Now if we can just get some people to understand that it has nothing to do with spam.   lol

Tossing an email address and grabbing a new one takes a couple of minutes. The stuff scambaiters do can keep scammers occupied for a lot longer.

You've got your heart in the right place, but you're approaching the problem in a wrong way - and I'm still afraid it'll do more harm than good.

A scammer tossing an email address and getting a new one means that all the possible "hits" to that scam will be lost and he has to start all over again from scratch.  That's why they hang on to the email addresses as long as possible until someone shuts them down.

Speaking of spam, anyone had trouble with spam text-messages being sent to your cell #? If so, were you able to make it stop and how?

It's illegal for marketers to contact mobile phones.   You can file a complaint here:
http://www.fcc.gov/complaints

That's USA only last I heard. :)
I don't know about other countries, the fcc.gov address is for the USA obviously.

Most all ISP's provide configurable anti-spam tools.  If you haven't "tweaked" it, then it's still set at the ISP default settings, which is normally pretty strict.  You can also add addresses to a white list within these configurations.

I recently started using Paint.net, which is a freebie.  It's a pretty serious image editor with tons of free plug-ins to download.  I got it to replace Photo Impact 8 (Commercial), which stopped working after one of those famous MS updates.....

I can't remember the last time I got a spam or scam email.  I turn over my spam mails to 3 different anti-spam organizations, including one government site.  My scams/phishing emails I turn over to two anti-spam sites and one anti-phishing site.  If I'm able to ascertain the ISP, I also send a nasty-gram to them as well.  Yeah, I hate spammers and scammers, they are the scum of the world.  I'm all for them being lined up, shot and mass buried with one marker saying "Here lies a bunch of scum, feel free to walk and whiz on their grave"....

Here's something to get even with the scumbag scammers of the world.  Whenever you get a scam email attempting to part your hard earned money into the hands of a worthless scumbag, go to this website and enter the scammers email address and the subject line of the email.  The scumbag will then be bombarded with fake emails, making it harder for him/her to actually be successful in hooking someone.  Do read the contents of the site, if you abuse it you WILL be banned.....

Dang... For $10, hard to go wrong! (I'm constantly having troubles with other titles... bought.)
Exactly what I thought.  I have Nero 10 updated to 11, but have nothing but problems with it.  And unless you use it every day for months at a time it's really hard to get around and use it.  And then there's the bloat.  I downloaded Burning Studio and it was only 176 mb, and it's not stripped down in any way.  As far as I can tell it has everything that Nero has.  Plus there's some themes and other stuff you can download to beef it up some more, but I don't need anything else than what it has now.
I haven't had time to play with it yet, but it comes highly recommended from several sources, and other software I have from them has worked great in the past.  Here's to hoping that they're still as good as people say......

I've ripped with DVDSmith Movie Backup many times and it has worked like a charm.  It will remove copy-protection and real simple to use.  Best of all it's free (Last time I checked anyhow).....

Last time I buy NVIDIA period. Just don't care anymore. They want to **** with freedom, well, my free cash won't bother ****ing around with them.
Yeah, that's sad too.  I've always used nVidia based cards since I came to the PC.  I plan on going to Linux in the next couple of years, so I'll probably wind up having to buy another GPU...

I wish i could do something about google and yahoo sending the newsletter to spam, but as you might expect, big companies like that don't care about us or what we want.  It's their world and they make the rules.
Tis why I only use my POP3 service on my ISP.  Most all are completely configurable in how they treat your email, right down to a whitelist.....

Yep, that's what I'm going to, Linux with Ubuntu and a dual boot with XP.  I'll be using Linux as the master boot....

I've got a beefed up 2.8 gz desktop, and whenever microsoft stops supporting XP updates, I'll be intalling Linux on this same computer with a XP dual-boot.  I'm not downgrading to win8.  I've done got really tired of all of microsofts shenanigans, especially with win8, and Apple isn't much better.  So far I think I'll be using Ubuntu as the front-end....

I just put everything in a normal text file and put it on CDRW and throw it in the safe.  If there's ever a change that needs to be made, that's why I use a CDRW!  lol

I suppose the mouse/trackpad drivers have a properties settings available, have you looked in there for anything not kosher?
The drivers issue is the only bad thing about Linux, but there's quite a few linux sites out there that have a stockpile of drivers and workarounds that linux users have found.
When I go over to Linux I plan on having all the linux drivers downloaded and on a CD ready to install just in case they're not included in the GUI....

I thought Media Center was only being omitted from the Pro version. Almost all computer will ship with the Home version on - which begs the question if you upgrade to Pro do they REMOVE functionality?

Has anyone seen whether losing Media Center in Pro affects Media Player which has been in every version of Windows at least since Windows 98.

From what I understand, if you already have Media Center you can use it on Win 8.  But considering it has to be "installed", unless you can find and get the installer to work your out of luck.  And I think that Media Center can't be separated from the OS disk to install on another machine according to MS's EULA.
Win 8 and pro comes with Media Player.  But doesn't that beg the question would you still have to install all the codecs, which means you either find a freebie codec or pay for it?
Here's a rundown of what comes with the different flavors of Win 8: http://www.pcworld.c...n_four_versions.html
You can go to the MS website and ask a question to the MS agents for the proper answers....

1171
Oh Microsoft, you've done it again....  >:(  If you want to play  DVD's on Win 8, you have to pay extra.  As a result of dumping Media Center by default, out of the box versions of Windows 8 will also lose TV tuner support and DVD Video Object (VOB) file playback.

Windows 8 Dumps Default DVD Playback
Microsoft's Windows 8 will not ship with support for DVD
playback. It says DVD playback will require a "marginal cost" OS
upgrade or a third-party solution.

Apparently the Linux kernel can behave very strangely when it is enabled. Most forums I visited with regards to errors I experienced always told me to disable ACPI. For some chipsets it works, but with most it just introduces erratic behavior that drives you insane.
I don't even know what that means and why it matters! Care to help?

P.S. Where's our mascot Superboy to help carry the torch?
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification provides an open standard for device configuration and power management by the operating system.

I had this same problem twice in XP. It seems XP resets the default to "Mute". Try going to controls, to sound and then just unclick the box for "mute".

I had that problem on Win 98SE, but never on XP.  I wonder if it has something to do with what sound card your using.  With my Audigy 2 ZS, when I go to Mute, the word "MUTE" is displayed on the upper left hand side of the monitor.

1174
Whenever you install Linux (whatever distro), disable ACPI in the BIOS
Now that's an excellent tidbit of info.  Thanks!   I'm putting together a text file of important Linux stuff that I need to know before installing, and this goes into that text file.   ;D

Only thing to figure out now is if I'm installing a dual boot XP/Linux, what will be the outcome of disabling ACPI on XP......

I suppose my only dilemma is if/when I do go to Linux, which flavor should I go to.  But that will be a discussion on a Linux forum.  I can only imagine the fighting that will/has break/broken out between the Linux flavor fanboys.
I've used many many different OS's over the years including Unix, but I don't really have a clue about the differences in the Linux flavors.  Actually, I don't have a clue as to how to use Linux.  I suppose one good thing about that is if I don't like one front end, I can just blow it away and try another flavor without having to blow away the whole OS.  I actually have a Linux Distro, plus WinLinux 2001, but they are both old and outdated.
I had thought about going over to Apple too, but as much crap as I've seen that they've put their user base through, plus the cost of their machines & accessories and a few other things, I decided not to even add them to the list.
Methinks this will require much research.... For another couple of years I suppose.....
