If you are talking about FLV videos I think they dont bypass Firefox cache, they are stored in it, not in Flash internal secret hidden cache... I dont think what you are seeing in Process Monitor is the actual flv file being cache but maybe something else flash related, just guessing but maybe if you blocked local settings from being stored, maybe what you are seeing is the flash code trying to store the settings and the flash plugin refusing over and over...
You can use this Firefox extension to control Firefox caching mechanism: BetterCache.
The description emphasizes its capabilities to make everything cache despite of http headers and the like but actually it incorporates a whitelist/blacklist feature that should let you put a rule to never cache flv files (never tried it myself though).
Anyway I think what you are experiencing is not related to disk caching slowing down flash playing but something else, unless there is a bug in firefox flash plugin or something is wrong with your disk.

Dont know about blocking incorrect answers, but if you use Acrylic DNS Proxy you can see some sort of log of all dns queries, but they will be made by Acrylic, not Windows.

I would also recommend Mandriva over Ubuntu but any of them would be ok.
Whatever you choose I would advise to research if your network connection hardware is well supported under the distribution you will install. So even if you have troubles with other hardware you can be sure that you have connectivity to download drivers, package updates or just simply ask for help on the net.

I think the Font Family is not just metadata, but part of the font code, so you would need a full font creator/editor to do that.

Regarding PowerMarks, I tried it and at first sight I see three big limitations with it:

 - When importing from Firefox, if you have several profiles, it chooses just one, without letting you import the other profiles' bookmarks.
 - All imported bookmarks end up in the tree root. A choice to select where do you want the imported bookmarks to be put would be nice.
 - I didnt find any way to reorganize folders: drag and drop doesnt work in the folder tree frame, and only bookmark items show up in the right frame.

Just an idea, maybe the bad block TrueCrypt is complaining about is in the boot sector or the mbr because of some boot manager installation?
I'm not sure if chkdsk tests that area, it checks only partitions I think...
I believe all windows disk checkers have to rely on chkdsk to do the job on ntfs.
The only third party solution I can think of would be using some Linux distro with ntfs-3g support and check the volume from there but I'm not sure if thats safe (well for read-only checks it should do, but I would not do any corrections from linux just in case...)

Am I missing something or none of this programs support Firefox 3.0 new bookmarks storage architecture?
It seems they are using a different database system than the classical bookmarks.htm file of other mozillas.
I tried a few and none of them seemed to able to export to my Firefox 3.0, and when they import they are missing some of the bookmarks.
Is there any solution for keeping firefox 3.0 bookmarks synchronized? (locally across different browsers, not online)

I doubt the first poster needs to bother with half open connection limits as he says he is using a GPRS connection. I think there is no point in having a higher than default half open connections when he doesnt have enough bandwidth to give to all of those connections.

@ Curt: it will patch the tcpip system driver so it will affect any and all programs connecting to the internet.

I believe the reason for having silent automatic updates is because that way Google can manage Chrome as just another "web service" like the rest of their services, and not having to deal with the fact that, along time, not all users will install the latest update, so they will have to tailor their services for different versions running at the same time (for instance, they will release a new version of gmail that will rely on some new feature of Google Chrome v2.0; if there is users still using Google Crome v1.9, they will not be able to use that new feature or maybe it will crash the browser, or cause problems to their Gmail servers...).
