DC Gamer Club / Re: 30 PC Games to Play Before You Die
« on: May 06, 2009, 06:47 AM »
The list is very 1st person shooter heavy, a genre I don't care much about. That said, I played through the first half of Far Cry and liked it.

From the 6 games on the list that I actually played my favourite is Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. It is charming and engaging, and just about the right mixture of story, puzzle and action. I have bought Grim Fandango and I think I would have liked it, but the character controls turned me off so much that I couldn't play it.

My all time favourite game is not on the list: The Longest Journey.
Playing it was an experience that still haunts me. If you like adventure games and haven't played it, do yourself a favour and check it out. It can be bought on Steam, I believe.

You might guess that I love stories, so the other games on my personal best of list are probably not too surprising:

Nox (was much better than Diablo 2 IMHO, has immense replay value because the 3 classes play so differently plot- and abilitywise)
Warcraft 3 (I still play this one regularly - it's immense fun and extremely versatile due to tons of user-generated gameplay)
World of Warcraft (thank god I found the strength to give it up - still one of the best games ever but too addictive to play)
Dune II (I loved that game, and found it much better than it's C&C descendants)
Bard's Tale (probably unplayable now because it's so ancient. I invested months into that game as a kid)
Indiana Jones 4, Monkey Island I & II, The Dig and Loom (of the Lucas Arts games I enjoyed these the most)
Gabriel Knight (although definitely not flawless I liked the game's atmosphere and have fond memories of playing it)
Broken Sword (a great adventure game with an engaging story and likeable characters)
Beyond Good & Evil (a game between classical adventure and action, has a great sci fi setting and story)

There are possibly a few games that I forgot and certainly a few I've never tried and would have liked (like Planescape). Nowadays I don't want to invest too much time into gaming, so I haven't played any of the more modern games.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Request - Red Box Capture Click

Good idea, seconded! I think just clicking is fine for normal redbox capture now we can cancel by pressing ESC.

I hope you don't mind if I bring the PM discussion to the thread?

regarding your commandline launching posts.. what do you think about me adding a memo in the options where user can specify some commandline programs to execute post capture -- that would make it easier to run a few commands after capturing, which were independent of the configured graphic image editor, etc.
-mouser

Why not enable all the filter options in the memo box? Like %customdate% etc. This would make creating the parameters for command line utilities much more flexible.

For instance, I am saving my screenshots in daily subfolders, named like this: "2009-03-08" etc. I create this directory manually every day*, go into this directory within SC and it will automatically save the captured screenshots there, very intuitive.

Because of this directory structure I need some way to pass this directory name to the ftp command line utility, so that it will save the screenshot in the same subdirectory on the server (Rightload will create the directory if it doesn't exist already).

Cheers,
Stefan

*Any idea how to create a daily subfolder within the screenshot folder automatically?

Screenshot Captor / Re: FTP Uploader Script

I just found out that Rightload also supports the command line, which makes it even greater. Click here for instructions.

Everyone out there looking for free command line utilities.

Automatically create thumbnails from the captured screenshot: Easy Thumbnails. The command line options are displayed in the help.
The tool I use for uploading the screenshot plus the thumbnail is Rightload. Here are the Command line options.

Both tools support command line and right-click action and are very easy to setup and use.

Installed the beta, works as expected, thanks!

7
Great stuff, thanks!

8
How does SC pass the path/filename of the captured image to an external executable?

Can you give me an example for a simple *.bat file that prints the filename of the image in the command line? I will need it to pass it on to a command line tool.

9
Btw, maybe you should rename this option from "Launch External Editor" to "Launch External Application" or similar.

I didn't have the idea to use a command line utility for resizing and uploading until my brain had translated "Editor" to "any executable, ideally one that processes command line parameters"

mouser, I love you!

Yes, that is exactly what happened, yesterday I was thinking about trying out this option, clicked it, and then proceeded to do something else and forgot :-)

Screenshot Captor / SC Folder window popping up after screenshot
« on: March 05, 2009, 03:54 AM »
I updated SC to the latest version yesterday, and today (after waking my PC from sleep) it started to behave strangely. After every screenshot a window is opened automatically showing the SC install directory (in my case it's "D:\Program Files\ScreenshotCaptor").

Have I accidentally set an option to do this?

Or is it because I set my PC to sleep?

Or is it because I set the default screenshot folder to a network drive? (I don't think so, because yesterday it worked).

12
Ok, I'll let you know when I have found what I'm looking for.

Thanks for all the good work!

Stefan

13
That's all right until you have coded it into the left pane, thanks!

14
Exactly, as it is now I have to manually create the thumbnail.

Btw, there is a tiny bug with the thumbnail creation. Even though the "Switch to Thumbnail after Creation" checkbox is unchecked, the thumbnail rather than the (still selected) original is displayed in the main window.

Screenshot Captor / Feature Request: sort order of thumbnail panel
« on: March 04, 2009, 11:53 AM »
I'd like to be able to sort the thumbnail panel alphabetically rather than by creation date. I'd also like to be able to set the sort order.

The reason: I often manually create thumbnails or different versions of the same screenshot. As it is now, the new versions are not grouped with the original in the list, which would make much more sense.

Maybe this can this be done already? Is there a hidden setting in an ini file?

Thanks,
Stefan

First of all, let me thank you for Screenshot Captor, I love it!

For my blog I take lots of screenshots, and to improve my workflow I want to send a captured image to the command line to automatically

a) create a thumbnail from the captured image
b) upload both the captured image and the thumbnail via sftp to my web space

Can this be done using Screenshot Captor?
Can anyone help me finding these 2 command line tools? There must be a lot of tiny open source floating around doing exactly that, no?

Thanks a lot,
Stefan
