Find And Run Robot / FARR 2.90.02 not useable
« on: September 12, 2010, 11:32 AM »
I updated from v2.87.03 to v2.90.02 several days ago (as an aside, that's how FARR id's itself in the troubleshooting log and to DCU, but both the helpfile and the EXE properties identify it as 2.90.01, a little confusing.)

Since I updated, FARR has become unusable. I'll press Break and type a few keys which appear in the entry field, after which FARR is unresponsive for long enough for me to lose all interest... maybe 30 seconds, maybe 3 minutes. For now, I've just unloaded it, hoping for a fix... how can I function without FARR??!

Nothing else on the system seems sluggish. Windows XP SP3.

Thanks!

DcUpdater / DCUpdater redundancy
« on: July 24, 2010, 03:52 PM »
This scenario has occurred many times and is quite frustrating:

1. DCUpdater runs and suggests updates. Other stuff going on, no time to respond.

2. A few days later, DCUpdater runs again. All the same updates are suggested, added to the end of the list. Maybe I'm away from home for a few weeks with my computer on remote access. By the time I get home, the list of 10-ish suggested updates has grown to a list of 100 suggested updates, with the same ones being listed again and again and again. Yech.

Thanks.

Find And Run Robot / console output to memo
« on: April 23, 2010, 09:46 AM »
Using virtual launch string "appcapappendmemo" in a simple alias:
appcapappendmemo python c:\mypath\clipsum.py

1. Even though .py is an executable extension on my system (python), if I specify the command as only a .py file, it says "Error launching..." It works ok as shown above.

2. The output of the script goes nicely into the memo display, but the memo display does not scroll at all, must be scrolled manually each time to see the output.

3. How to clear the memo display?

4. This is moot because I ended up displaying all text from the python script, but I wanted to use the "showmemo" virtual launch string but could not find in the documentation how to combine two virtual launch strings in one alias command. Where is this described?

Thanks!

DcUpdater / 1-time bug... DCU would not exit
« on: January 28, 2010, 05:36 PM »
Just FYI....

DCU showing in tray, but no updates needed (this seems odd, don't recall this happening before).
Clicked big Exit button, nothing happened. Clicked exit in tray right-click, no change.
Killed from Task Manager, restarted, exited ok.

Seems like it would help troubleshooting if the operations log included a time stamp.

DcUpdater / Request option to always check all known programs.
« on: January 15, 2010, 06:50 AM »
If I run DCUpdater manually (e.g. invoke it as a program from FARR), then it includes FARR and FARR plugins and Anuran on its list of programs to check. But if DCUpdater is invoked by one program, it doesn't list its other registered programs.

I would like an option that whenever it runs, it checks all its registered programs.

For example, first thing this morning there were two DCUpdater notifications in my system tray for FARR plugins (btw: why 2 notifications instead of 1?), but when I opened the DCUpdater window in response, it did not list Anuran. I was hoping that whenever DCUpdater runs for FARR, it would include Anuran in its list of programs to check... and vice versa.

Find And Run Robot / NOD32 flagged FARR as trojan [posted in error]
« on: November 18, 2009, 10:36 PM »
Sorry, searched the forum for NOD32 before posting this but somehow missed the relevant thread. Time to quit for the day.

This afternoon during a periodic system scan, NOD32 quarantined FARR (v 2.77.02) with the following logged message: "probably a variant of Win32/Genetik trojan"
I only noticed it the next time I tried to use FARR and it didn't pop up and FindAndRunRobot.exe was missing.

I assume that the message is spurious and released the EXE from quarantine. Its MDA5 is:
6f3980ac3acb64a29f11cc6dea774fcb

Find And Run Robot / What flavor of regex?
« on: July 07, 2009, 04:14 PM »
What flavor of regex does FARR use? There should be (at least) a link in the help file to a page which describes them. Thanks!

Find And Run Robot / Alt+P hotkey broken?
« on: March 10, 2009, 09:16 PM »
Probably my bad, but the Alt+P hotkey for the options dialog seems to have broken recently. Can someone else see if it's working for you? I'm now on FARR 2.49.01

Find And Run Robot / Better link to version history, please
« on: July 28, 2008, 10:49 AM »
When DCUpdater says that a FARR update is available, it provides a link to this page:
https://www.donation...drun/help/index.html
whose history link points to this page:
https://www.donation...drun/help/index.html
which lags behind this page:
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=10505.0

and which is therefore of no use in deciding whether to do the update ASAP or a bit later.

Would it be possible to have a more reliable link path, from FARR's listing in DCUpdater, to the latest version change info?

Thanks!

Find And Run Robot / Disable Ctrl+Break?
« on: July 10, 2008, 07:53 AM »
OK, I must be going nuts. I can't find the option to change the hotkeys that invoke FARR. (Specifically I want to disable Ctrl+Break.)

I thought that perhaps FARR had reverted to a "show basic options only" mode, but I can't find anything about that either.

Thanks!

All of a sudden FARR has become unusable for searching. As soon as I type a character in the search entry field, up comes a popup "No disk in drive . Please insert a disk into drive D:"

I expect that this is caused by some old shortcut links which migrated from my previous system 6 weeks ago, which still do point to a (now nonexistent) drive D:. But FARR doesn't even tell me which link is causing the problem. I can't tell you exactly when this problem emerged because 1) I'm not sure when I did my most recent FARR updates and 2) recently I've been working on a limited number of tasks so have been able to select the program from FARR's "most recently used" default list, which does not cause this problem to emerge (no typing on the search line).

Help! Thanks.

Find And Run Robot / Hold down final key to launch first found item
« on: August 02, 2007, 05:27 AM »
FWIW, I just read that Mac Launchbar offers the following feature: as an alternative to pressing the Enter key, just keep holding down the final key that you've typed. Sounds intriguing where one has learned a short key sequence which brings a frequently used command to the head of the list.

1. It would be friendly if DCU were to offer to close a running app before (or during) installation of an update.

2. Just now I ran DCU and if found updates for itself and for FARR. It downloaded them both, then installed itself and restarted itself. But then it didn't realize that it had already downloaded the FARR update, so it did it again. No big deal, but better if it recognized the file and didn't repeat the download.

Thanks!

When I type "Upd", FARR correctly locates
D:\Program Files\DcUpdater\DcUppdater.exe
and several other items in the same folder.

But when I type "DCU", it finds none of these. It only finds donationcder.com URLs

presumably this is finding (only) the dc search alias; I'm still not at all up to speed on aliases, but isn't this an incorrect parsing?

Thanks!

DcUpdater / DCU download issues?
« on: July 11, 2007, 04:39 PM »
Mouser,

DCU is a great concept, and already seems very handy. But...

I just ran DCU, and (perhaps for the first time) it told me that itself and FARR needed updating. I clicked "DL & install all updates". Pretty soon a Firefox (2.0.0.4) download dialog appeared, but I had to wait about a minute before FF responded to my click on the dialog's "Save" button. This happened for both the DCU and the FARR downloads. Don't know if this is a DC or a FF issue, but it has not happened before with FF dl's.

I eventually ended up with two copies of the DCU download, and one copy of the FARR download, in my DL directory. Even if I clicked the Save button again while waiting, WTF?

Also, what is the point of calling the button "DL & install all updates" if it does not automatically go into the installation step? Seems like I had to manually run the two downloaded update files. Or am I missing something.

Win2K SP4.

Find And Run Robot / Apparent bugs - newbie
« on: September 02, 2005, 08:41 AM »
v 1.05.21

1. F&R apparently accepted my license key but Help-About still shows 179 days to renewal, even after exit / restart.

2. I don't understand alias groups. I have 2 aliases named:
  .abcx
  .abcy
but when I type .abc then only .abcy is shown though both are partial matches

3. When a group alias contains a URL, F&R is inconsistent about what it displays in the Name columns. It seems that this should always contain the URL. The following URL displays as expected (except see my note below about "http://")
  http://www.abc.com/site/index.html
But in this one, the final folder name is omitted altogether, making it very difficult to know what is being shown.
  http://www.abc.com/site/

4. Also, the URL parser for URLs in a group alias does not realize that URLs may contain colons after the http:, resulting in the difficult to read situation where this URL is parsed after the second colon instead of the first as expected:
http://www.abc.com:1...rontend/x/index.html

(Actually I'd rather that it put the entire URL including http:// in the name column and put the name of the group in the location column, but I realize that I have not yet grokked the essence of F&R so I'll just mention this as a weak preference.)

Thanks!

(I shouldn't be doing this right now, too overloaded... I should just use F&R to save lots of time and come back in a month when I can. But I did want to pass on these initial comments.)
