Agreed, thanks for the site recommendation.  I just bookmarked it and added the URL to my Google custom search engine for freeware.

Soluto told me that Soluto added 7 seconds to the boot time, plus it was using around 40MB of RAM.  I'm no longer using Soluto.

To be fair, I'm not their target audience.  I've reviewed all the apps that run at startup and have turned off everything I don't need.  I was mostly testing out Soluto to see if I could recommend it to others.  I could see it being quite useful for folks who don't know much about what's starting automatically.

And +6 for DBAN :)

@lanux128 Adding SHA1 is a good idea.  I'll take a look.  Thanks for the instructions on how to use it with Total Commander and Salamander.

Cool :)

106
Ahem...you can download it here.

I wrote this mainly for me, but in case someone wants it for the same reason I wrote it, here's brief overview.  The reason I wrote it is because I couldn't find any MD5 sum apps that did exactly what I wanted: Accept a file as a command-line parameter and compare the resulting MD5 sum with the text in the clipboard.  I use it with FreeCommander and I assume it could be used with Total Commander as well.  It closes with the Escape button, so it takes one keystroke to run it, and another one to close it.

Comments are welcome.

To integrate with Free Commander, use this as the parameter: %ActivSel% /sub

Those were hilarious.  I read about them yesterday but didn't really catch what they were so I didn't watch them.  Thanks for pointing them out.

Agreed :)  The other one I recall updating was 7zip to get the Foobar2000 installer to extract.  I just checked and it's not working again.  Blast!  I can manually extract with 7-zip, but UE identifies it as NSIS and extracts a bunch of .bin files.

Another big fan here.  It's Ctrl-2 in Free Commander (Ctrl-1 is to extract zips) and I use it at least once a day.  I was updating the backend utilities manually, then found Lupo PenSuite's version.  It's nice to see an update from the author.

The main reason I prefer Notepad++ is because I'm already using it for text editing.  However, it's a pain to have to go through those menus to find the two options.  It took me a good 5 minutes to find them.

It's the classic debate between a simple application that does one thing well (stripmail) and a more complex application that does lots of things (notepad++), but not as well (or at least easily).

I tried creating a macro but it failed miserably.

I might have to start using stripmail myself  :)

113
Just as an FYI, Notepad++ can do this.

Select all the text.
TextFX Tools -> Clean eMail >Quoting
TextFX Edit -> Unwrap Text

That was it, I still had My Documents on the Win7 machine.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm migrating to a Win7 x64 machine from WinXP SP3.  I believe I have the same settings on both, but the subdirectory filtering in FARR isn't working on Win7 for the Dropbox directory.  See attached screenshots to illustrate what I'm seeing.  On Windows 7 there are two results for Keepass (one from the Backups directory) even when the Backups directory is in the exclude list.

Is there another setting that could affect this behavior?  I've gone through all the preferences but I may have missed something.

jaden, thank you so much for this comment.  i almost felt like no one was reading these.  I am a little embarrassed to admit how much effort I put into these reviews.

I appreciate the time you spend on them and I would wager I'm not alone.

Thanks for the info on the giveaway.  I'll keep an eye out for it.

I read the earlier posts about Powermarks and Linkman but decided to stick with Diigo (having converted from Delicious a few years ago).

After reading this review however, I gave it another try.  I love the live search.  It also makes it easier to switch browsers and still be able to add bookmarks with a keyboard shortcut (one of the reasons I switched to Diigo).  I use tags to organize all my bookmarks, but with 11,000 that's becoming less manageable.  Being able to search them all quickly is probably the best way to go.

I imported all my bookmarks and the import and search performance is impressive.  How will we find out about the free Pro licenses?  You may have a convert  :)

Thanks 40hz - this looks like a great resource!

On a whim I tried using the latest version of libcurl.dll (7.20.0).  It crashed every time :eusa_dance:

I'm on a LAN and haven't noticed any connectivity issues.  I do use an openVPN connection so I can access another datacenter.  Could that be related?  Maybe a routing problem?

I've also seen a slightly different crash while manually starting and stopping it in order to provoke the issue.

I'm watching the process with Sysinternals' Process Monitor to compare successful runs and crashes.  I have 3 apps to check for updates.

On a successful run it creates 8 threads and has 3 TCP send/receive/disconnects in this order: SRSRSRDDD (S=Send, R=Receive, D=Disconnect).  5 threads exit, then the process exits.

On the first crash I reported, 8 threads are created and there are 2 TCP send/receives but no disconnects (Order: SRSR).  No threads exit.  That appears to indicate it's crashing in the network connectivity code.

On the second crash, 8 threads are created, and 2 TCP send/receive/disconnects occur.  (Order: SRSRDD).  No threads exit.  The order is odd, because the third connection doesn't appear, even though the other two are disconnected.  I'm not sure where the crash is happening to explain that order.

Let me know if there's any info I can provide to help diagnose this.

DcUpdater has been crashing recently.  I can get it to happen when I run it manually every 1 out of 3-5 times I run it.

The attached screenshot shows the threads view in ProcExp after it crashed and I suspended it, in case that's any help in debugging this.

Here's what the crash dialog had to say.  Although the version says 1.0.0.0 here, the about dialog says I'm running the latest version (1.26.01)

Worse yet are all the financial institutions I use now requiring me to add so-called "security questions" to my login, supposedly to enhance my online security. All that does is reduce my security online. Idiots - and then some.

Those are truly awful.  With the amount of personal information available online, those so-called security questions should be renamed account entry questions.  A 15 character password with uppercase, lowercase, digits and special characters?  Who cares, you wrote your dog's name and where you went to high school on your public Facebook profile and someone's already transferring money out of your account.

That's why I provide nonsensical answers to those questions and store them in KeePass.

What is your best friend's name? Flesh wound
What is your dog's name? Anybody want a peanut?

Oh yeah, here's my all time favorite ... Shell Oil decided to enforce a protection scheme on their gas cards. It consists of requiring one to enter their zip code when using the card. Apparently nobody at Shell knew that Address & Zip Code are a standard part of the information contained on every driver's license ever made. (Add what two cards are guaranteed to be in anybodies wallet) ... Doh!!

I don't remember when this started, but every time I fill up with my credit card I have to type in my zip code.  It's such a flimsy means of verifying someone's identification it probably stops more honest people from getting gas than crooks with a stolen card.

Like airport security, it inconveniences the consumer and is easily subverted by crooks.  I've heard the whole reason for these changes are to appease the public rather than reduce crime.  Corporations want to make sure people feel more secure, even if they're progressively less so as time goes by.
