Hi again Mouser,

Here's one of those amazing coincidences that happen to me way too often. I was just putting together a review of website watching services. The one you mention is payware. Got any freeware ones?

Here's a good review of the free web based services.

Best wishes,

Clif

Hi Mouser,

Thanks for the confidence in me that you show. I just now am going through the DC Newsletter. It's just great for folks like me who really don't have time to participate often, but want to keep up with the going's on here.

Nice review!

I used the ClickTeam Install Creator the last time I needed one. This looks much better.

Thanks for the great review.
Can I post it at my website? Full credit to the author and DonationCoder as well.

Living Room / Free license for SEAU (creates nice installers)
« on: November 13, 2006, 11:28 PM »
Hi folks,

I have been offered a free license to any single software at http://gammadyne.com. I saw this utility there and immediately thought of all the good programmers at DC.

I have no need for anything there, but I will transfer the license to this (or any other) to anyone here who would like it. If more than one of you wants one, I'll see what I can do.

Best wishes to you all ...

Clif

Here's the program that caught my eye: ($49 value)

Self-Extracting Archive Utility (SEAU) builds a professional software installation program in a single compressed executable file.  The installer runs on all of the 32-bit Windows platforms (9x, NT, 2000, ME, XP, 2003).  SEAU offers full support for uninstallation, multiple languages, interface customization, license agreements, readme files, file associations, DOS batch operations, multiple disk spanning, DLL installation, automated installations, patches, expiration dates, shared files, command line archive building, and much more.

SEAU creates executable installation programs that are self-contained in a single file.  A single file is easily downloaded, requires no software such as WinZip to decompress, and ensures that all installation files are present.

The installer's overhead is only 105 KB and the compression engine achieves a very high compression ratio.  You will be amazed at how small SEAU can make the archive.

SEAU can optionally provide support for uninstalling the product.  The user will be able to uninstall the product by one of the following methods:

    * The "Add/Remove Programs" option in Control Panel.
    * A Start Menu shortcut (optional).
    * A Desktop shortcut (optional).

Still being in beta stage it doesn't support the extensions I need.

It's an interesting browser, probably better suited for girls.

Hi Mamba,

That could be interpreted as a challenge to the females here. Would any of you "girls" care to comment? LOL

Having fun!

i can't believe no one posted a reply to this yet..
very nice mini review cliff - i have to forward this to vrgirl, this is the kind of thing she might like.

I can easily believe that no one replied. What's to reply about? Isn't it obvious that this is a "perfect" mini-review? LOL

Seriously though, I'm not surprised people here aren't really interested in Flock. I almost consider it to be "fluff-ware". In other words, the type of thing newbies to the internet might find exciting. I'm guessing most of us have alternatives to the features in Flock, or don't care to try them.

I still think it's pretty cool though. They've done a darn good job of integration and I wish them much success in the future. My only concern is that they keep a free version of it available.

Have fun!

Flocking out to get the new browser
review from ClifNotes, Jul 2006

Flock is a browser based on FireFox that is tweaked to let you socialize more easily, and they've released a new beta version. Last week, I got a letter from Flock asking me to try the newest beta version. I tried it out for awhile and now you'll know what I think of it.

Setup
After downloading Flock and installing it, I was presented with a wizard that tried to walk me through the setup. Flock uses several free services that allow it to do some unique things. I had a few problems getting through this wizard, mainly because I wasn't signed up for all the services Flock uses. Here are some of the services Flock uses or interfaces with ... Flickr, Photobucket, Del.icio.us, Blogger, MySpace, Live Journal,  Ebay, and RSS feeds.

Features
Because Flock is linked in with photo hosting services, bookmarking services, blog services, and RSS feeds, it's really there to keep you connected to your friends and the whole web. Once it's set up, you can drag and drop pictures into your blogs and post them right from Flock. It's very easy when you get used to it. The RSS news feeds are easy to use and add to, so you can keep track of the news or your favorite blogs from your friends.

Problems
Yes, this is beta software and I ran into a few bugs. My most serious problem was that Flock would stop working when I was trying to access my Gmail accounts. I won't be using it because of this single issue. That doesn't mean it won't work just dandy for you. Don't let me stop you from trying it. I still think it's very cool.

Here's what they say about the new Flock beta ...
''Welcome to Flock, the safe, spyware free web browser that makes it easier to connect with your friends. With Flock it's a snap to upload, comment, and discover new pics. Read all the news you care about, in one place. Blog freely. Get search results as soon as you start typing in the search box, and much more.''

I appreciate the link, as I am sure mouser does on every link you post. That was really my only requirement for you putting this in your newsletter so I am now satisfied. As for a webpage, I dont have one of my own as I havent the time to make one. Perhaps one day I can get someone to design me one. Anyways, links back to DC is enough for me as these casts are done for the good of donationcoder, its users, and all the users who happen to stumble upon it.

Thanks for including this and thanks for your help in getting the word spread!

Josh

Hi again Josh!

I published the newsletter early this morning.

Acckkkkk!

Netcraft failed it's first and only test from me!

View the difference in these two reports
http://www.siteadvis...tes/screensavers.com
http://toolbar.netcr...www.screensavers.com

I've had personal first-hand experience with screensaver.com and I know that it's not good, yet NetCraft makes no mention of it. Not only that, SA will warn you before you click on a site in a search engine. NetCraft only tells you about the site after you've arrived.

It's history ...

Thanks for the mention. I think I'll give it a try ...

I've got multiple copies of Portable Firefox and I'll fix one up for a trial run!

as i've said before, as long as their is a link back to dc, i'm all for it. :)

Yes, I'll link back as always. It's going to link to this thread and DC. Also, If Josh has a homepage, I'd love to see it and include a link if it's appropriate.

I'm curious, let's see how many times I've linked to DC in the past ...

Hi Josh,

I found your review in the DC Newsletter. Would you mind the review and screencasts being featured in my newsletter? I get about 3000 unique hits a week there.

http://freewarewiki....ifsCurrentNewsletter

I always give credit and a link-back, and I'll mention DC as well.

I have previous reviews from another friend of mine at this url, but I like your screencasts and you did a fine job.

Thanks for the praise Mouser. Highly appreciated, coming from you.

Yeah, table of contents at the top. I give credit to Fred's Langa List for that idea.

However, I might mention that it's a standard feature in pbwiki.com's free wiki farm.

Placing a simple <toc> statement is all that's required to neatly index the page. Couldn't be easier or more convenient.

Time for a shameless plug: (can't help it, I love my webhost)

Wow! Great back and forth on this thread.

I wrote about Wink some time ago, and I tried it long enough only to get a feel for it. It's hard to beat the experience of people who actually use it in a project or two.

I hope you don't mind if I reference this thread in a future article about Wink2. Better yet, I'd love it if one of you might volunteer to write a review, since you actually have used it. (Two paragraphs at most with a screenshot)

I always give full credit and offer to plug your favorite site. (DonationCoder?) LOL

Oh, I mentioned DC again in this week's newsletter.

Thanks for the tip about the new stuff here Mouser.

Have fun!

I had recently noticed that SiteAdvisor has been aquired by McAfee. I was concerned they might drop the free version until I read this:

From the CEO:
McAfee will be working with us to accelerate feature development and bring you new ways to use SiteAdvisor and to stay safe and in control online.

We greatly admire the technology and people behind McAfee, and we can’t think of a better partner to help take SiteAdvisor to the next level.

As we begin to integrate with McAfee, you’ll notice lots of improvements over the coming months. But a few things won’t be changing:

* The free features in the current SiteAdvisor software. They will remain free to our current users and will continue to be available for free on our Web site for new users.
* Our commitment to provide objective safety ratings which are free from conflicts of interest.
* Our willingness to probe deeply into the actions of the malicious players on the Web and to work hand in hand with you, the SiteAdvisor community, to expose them.

Source: http://blog.siteadvi...or_to_the_next.shtml

I noticed no promise to keep it free forever, but nobody can promise that.

I would love to try out the VMWare, but my system is much too slow. I might try out one of the Sandbox programs sometime. I've heard Sandboxie is good. Any opinions on that one?

My favorite trick is to unpack ALL exe's (Installers are quite often self-extracting archives with setup scripts) before running them.

Hi Edvard, have you ever tried Universal Extractor?

It tries to unpack installers that it recognizes. I found that it only works on a hit or miss basis, but you may find it useful.

Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestions. I added a line recommending backups after the spyware scanning phase.
