Found Deals and Discounts / Re: DrawPlusX5 50% on BDJ
« on: March 08, 2012, 11:59 AM »

Draw+ looks interesting and I downloaded the starter edition trial to take a look see. When I went to install I was asked is I wanted their toolbar that I declined.

- 3_8_2012 , 12_39_49 PM.png

I continued on, it did some un-packing and up popped this screen:

- 3_8_2012 , 12_41_03 PM.png

This is the 1st time ever I have had this happen when installing a program. I re-booted yesterday and I haven't installed anything since.
Any ideas on why this is happening? I've heard this is a quality product and don't want to be paranoid about it, just never had it happen before.  Anything else that could cause this?
I cancelled till I decide what to do.

Thanks

Steven,

Right Note, for instance has a strong horizontal (x axis) implementation combined with an explorer tree on the y axis with multiple levels, I think.  This could be given an arbitrary tab-interface score of maybe 8.5 on a scale of 10, real solid and strong, not spectacular.
The reason this is helpful is that often your major categories, such as finances, web, spirit, software, etc could be the Y axis distinction, while the specific topics could be X axis,   Within the specific topics, then, the Explorer tree would only get moderately cluttered.  The whole purpose here is to keep a bit of top-down thinking so that the Explorer tree does not have to be frequently opened and closed and navigated to find the present topic.

I have only recently started using RightNote but so far it is able to do most everything I've needed or tried. Purchased it during the BDJ offer.
The X Y axis is present in RightNote, they are just opposite of your above quote.  Categories (Pages in RightNote) are the X and specific topics would be the Y (Explorer window.)  This better fits my usage and I guess thought process.
I also like that it allows me to choose the type "note" I prefer in each category. Each can be any or combination of Memo, RichEdit or RichView (still figuring out the differences of the two,) Source Code or Spreadsheet.
- 3_8_2012 , 9_49_21 AM.png

A major example -
** I would like my major colors right on the button bar, rather than a pull-down pallet and choice. **
Is this implemented here or there ?  A note is much more usable if you can color-code on the fly, very simply.
Unfortunately I haven't found a single button method but it is still relatively easy to change the color through the right-click context menu.  Plus through the context menu a different icon can be added to each note, child or sibling.

Another big issue is an active user forum, a rarity in the Note field.  Worthy of discussion, too, as it has a lot to do with where we settle.  Right Note is considered excellent despite this lack, but it should be noted.  The developers should be encouraged on this, even if it is done by a Yahoogroups or Googlegroups type of forum, or even attempted by letting Donationcoder or another forum host.  (Wilder's does this a lot with security software, quite successfully.)
It's also unfortunate RightNote doesn't have a forum for sharing of information... yet.  I am hopeful it is only a yet and one will be started. I saw that you posted regarding this on BDJ.
I'm not sure how their support by email is doing so far.  I sent a question and haven't heard back yet.  Being fair, it's only been ~18 hours since it was sent.

General Software Discussion / Found an Office Ribbon UI Editor
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:29 AM »

I came across an Office Ribbon Editor I haven't seen discussed here yet.  Or mentioned after a couple of searches.

Simply called Office Ribbon Editor by LeafCreations

Short quote from the main page:
About Office Ribbon Editor

Office Ribbon Editor's main focus is on editing the RibbonUI for Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. The reason behind this decision lies on the fact that the ribbonUI is managed with XML. Office Ribbon Editor is a feature rich application that includes such features as:

Creating Office 2007 and 2010 documents without the requirement of having Office actually installed.
    Syntax highlighting and Autocomplete capability.
Access to all Office 2007 and 2010 features from the ribbon to the new Backstage feature found in Office 2010.

Since there's been a few discussions here about the MS Ribbon it might be of interest.
I am mostly still in the dark ages and using Office 2003 so I haven't tried it.

Standard disclaimer... I am not affiliated with the program or developer in any way.

Living Room / Re: Android Tablets
« on: March 03, 2012, 06:33 PM »
In addition to looking at the processor etc. one suggestion that is a recurring theme on some of the tablet related forums I've visited is to pick your apps 1st.  The tablet can be the fastest and prettiest one out there but if it doesn't do what you want it doesn't make a difference.
Just an observation.

There was a similar request a while back by another member for something like this.
:tellme: I think that might have been me.

Request / idea was to show a list of shortcuts overlaid on the desktop (to one side) related to the current focused app.
New app => new list.

IDEA ~ Show List of Shortcuts overlaid on Desktop

Yep, yours was the one. I like your idea and have been watching out in my "travels" to different sites for something like it. I even thought about trying a wallpaper changer but that seemed more of a hassle than a solution.  I like Ian's solution. I'll just have to learn a bit about AHK. Which definitely isn't a bad thing.

132
Ian,
Thank you for this. I have been meaning to try and learn some about AHK but haven't so far. Your script is helpful for Win7.  if I wanted to do similar for a different program could I just replace your hotkeys text with something else using an editor and run it in AHK?

There was a similar request a while back by another member for something like this.

General Software Discussion / Re: Does this exist?
« on: February 27, 2012, 04:21 PM »
I looked for something similar to what you describe a while back but didn't need portable or the free form and used Clarify.  I remembered seeing two others in my journey but didn't try.  I found my old notes.

Hypernotes
http://sourceforge.net/projects/hypernotes/
Hard to tell if this is still in development since the last update was 5-2-2011 and it's alpha.  But from the one screenshot they show it looks interesting and kind of onenote looking.

Freeplane
This one looks interesting too and according to one of the posts in their forum I think it may be portable. Freeplane also has a fairly active forum http://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/freeplane/viewforum.php?f=1
They may have some suggestions.

http://freeplane.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
From the web page:
Why Freeplane?
Freeplane aims for maximum ease and speed of use. Occupying the middle ground between an editor and a diagramming tool, Freeplane allows the user to add content as quickly and naturally as they would in a text editor, yet producing structured content that can be manipulated as easily as a diagram"

Not sure if it takes screenshots but might be able to use it along side Mouser's Screenshot Captor since it can be portable.

It was also mentioned once in this old DonationCoder thread on mindmap programs:  https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=5801.msg40627#msg40627

Let us know how it goes and what you finally decide on.

General Software Discussion / Re: Does this exist?

Here are two you might want to look at.

http://www.clarify-it.com/
Off their web site:
"A better way to work with screenshots
Capture, sequence and annotate screenshots to create documents that are a great alternative to screen recordings"

http://www.bluemangolearning.com/screensteps/
Off their web site:
"Creating documentation doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming. ScreenSteps combines everything you need, screen capture, image editing and documentation authoring, allowing you to create better documentation in less time."

These are both by Blue Mango Learning but have separate web sites.  Both are paid apps. Clarify-it is a little less $$ and not as many features.  I have Clarify-it and it lets me take a screen shot and then add text.   And export as a PDF.

Edit:
Also take a look at their blog.  It's been a while since I have and they have some good info on creating manuals.
http://www.bluemangolearning.com/blog/

I'm all about companies putting out GOOD manuals for their products.  I used to work with a gentleman that said "Manuals should be written like a 1st grade reader. This isn't meant as an insult to a person's education. Just that typically (and naturally) the person that writes the manual is the person that knows the MOST about that product.  And the one that in many cases reads it is the one that knows the LEAST about the product. It should be written with that person in mind."

^ I'm often logged in (and using search), & I got the same results as you Bob...

I just didn't know. That shoots my theory.

136
Let me ask if this could be the reason I didn't see the clear history choice?
Do they only collect history info when you are logged on to your Gmail account?
The only reason I have an account is it was required by Verizon when I had an Android phone.  The only time I log onto it is to see if I have any mail on the account or modify some contacts I keep there for my BB phone. And always log off when I'm done. I never search the web when logged in to my account.

137
It may be too late already.  I went to look at my history to see what was there and maybe clear it.  The only screen that comes up for me is:

- 2_22_2012 , 10_13_37 PM.png

I do not get the option like the screen shown in the EF example:

- 2_22_2012 , 10_16_22 PM.png

Oh well.

Wow, I wasn't expecting it to be so professional looking on such short notice.

In my experience, everything related to one of tranglos' apps looks slick/professional.

I totally agree!  I just wasn't expecting it to be so "slick/professional" in the short amount of time after I asked if it was available.  Almost like he was a mind reader... or is he?

Living Room / Re: Google Ends Privacy
« on: January 29, 2012, 01:45 PM »
I have an Android phone. How does this affect me?: Because you have to sign in to your Google account to do anything except for browse the Web and make phone calls, Google will be able to track practically anything you do on your phone using Google services.

So even on the phones, it's limited to what you do while logged in, and apparently you can browse and call without that happening.
Troubling news, but not unexpected, and seemingly easily circumvented.

The great thing about Android is that you don't have to use the Google services, you can use any of the plethora of alternatives. In fact if you go a step further and install a ROM like CyanogenMod you can opt to not have a single Google app installed on the device to begin with.

[edit] Also people should checkout - http://www.google.co...B/privacy/tools.html

There you can opt out of search personalisation, targeted ads, etc.

Though I'll be doing it, why should I have to go through these hoops to opt-out of a service I don't or won't use?  Or should say my wife doesn't use a phone for.  I'm in the process of re-activating my old Android phone for her to use.  Her flip phone was acting up plus she wanted something that displayed photos better than the flip and so she could occasionally check her (non-gmail) emails on.  But, until she signs up for a gmail account, my account is the one assigned to the phone.  I've turned off the background sync so it doesn't mess with her contacts but it won't be her phone until she signs up.  Plus we had to add a data plan just so she could use it.  But that's a different story.

How is this considered an opt-in?

« on: January 29, 2012, 11:54 AM »
By default, Echo only prompts if you are deleting 10 clips or more. You can reduce that number to 1, so that Echo will always prompt:

Preferences -> Prompting -> ClipDeleteTrigger

Yep, that did it. Thanks. Now I don't have to worry about hitting delete by accident.

There are a couple of other things I'm wondering but will check through the previous posts and help 1st.  If I'd have looked at the help I'd have known about the trigger. :-[

By chance is there a pdf of the help?

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Release: Ethervane Echo
« on: January 28, 2012, 01:54 PM »
I'm using the latest Version 1.0.6.110 and have a question about deleting a clip.  If I have a clip highlighted and delete using the keyboard or the context menu with the mouse it's gone.  There is no confirmation whether I would like to delete the clip.  I checked the preferences and Prompting > BeforeDeletingClips is set to True.  Also tried changing it to False just in case.  Same thing.  No confirmation.  Is there another setting I need to change or look at so I get a confirmation?

Also, is there any type of listing that tells what all of the individual preferences settings do?  I've figured out some of them or read in earlier posts what others do.  Chances are I won't use many of them, more of a learning experience for me.

Thanks,

This "draggability" and reconfiguring of the tabs in the CHS main GUI window seems not to have been documented (?), or covered in any of the CHS videos by mouser that I have seen:
See this summary of CHS "How to" videos ("screencasts"): (Have I missed any?)

I thought there were more than 3 but looks like I was mistaken.  That's all I found also.

Maybe it is a hidden feature test by mouser to see who found it 1st. :) And you won!!!

Back on 12/15 mouser started a Clipboard Help+Spell: Tips and Tricks thread.   This would be a good addition to it.

145
timns, I also got a thong. Does yours itch and exhibit crack-creep?

146
But hey - isn't it nice how easily you can reconfigure the main CHS GUI?

IainB

It is!!!
I didn't know this was doable.  I need to watch Mouser's videos more often.  :-[

Thanks very much for taking the time to put together the tutorial.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Ethervane Radio 0.2.4
« on: January 20, 2012, 12:56 PM »
I've been using Ethervane Radio more and more recently.  ESPECIALLY since it gives me access to a few stations I haven't been able to get on some of the bigger named programs.  I've also noticed the sound quality through my external speakers seems better too.  It at least seems I need to tweak the other programs a little with an EQ plug-in for them to sound as good.   Are you doing anything special to make ER sound better or am just (or not) hearing things??  :tellme:

There are times though I would like to boost the bass a little with ER.  Are there any recommendations of an add on EQ that could work with ER?  I've gone through all of my sound/speaker settings and there isn't anything installed.  This is a Dell laptop with whatever stock sound card came with it.

Thanks!

148
I do not have an addition to the list but will highjack the topic a moment to offer a  if you decide to take this further.  And I would be interested in a better/easier expander if you decided to offer it as donationware or for a modest fee.  Especially if it is along the ease of use of Ethervane Echo.

BDJ is offering Folder Scout Professional today at 50% off for $14.95.

http://www.bitsdujou...ware/folder-scout-2/

From BDJ page:
Folder Scout Professional lets you instantly access any drive, folder, or file on your computer or network just by typing a few letters! ...

Features overview on File Scout's web page: http://www.foldersco...m/ProductInDepth.htm
I'm not on a server but here is a link to how it works with a network in the last release http://www.foldersco....com/NextRelease.htm

I checked through the forums here and did not find anything that it had been discussed before.  I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it or maybe comparisons to other like programs? Listary, FARR, Everything Search or anything else.

Time allowing, on the 1st formal day back to work after the holidays, I'll download and give the trial a try. But still wondering if anyone else is using it.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with, or getting any type of kickback from, any of the programs I mentioned above. Only using a couple of them.
