I've just been looking at this in a renewed attempt to customize the folders I keep open in my taskbar. Over the last year or so I've tried a half dozen applications, alongside the native customization panel. None have worked - including this icon generator.

Turns out that it's the Windows (7) inability to work with NAS files. This app, and various others, work on internal hard drives, and removable memory, but not networked drives. So now I'm looking for a solution to either the immediate challenge of customizing NAS folder icons, or reworking Windows 7 so that it extends functionality to NAS drives. Maybe those are one and the same?

Any thoughts?

hello dglp,
wouldn't it be a lot easier to use Taskbar thumbnail previews? I think it will, because I don't think what you are asking for, is possible!

enable / disable thumbnail previews:

https://superuser.com/questions/202843/how-to-disable-windows-7-taskbar-thumbnails-preview
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52265-taskbar-thumbnail-previews-enable-disable.html

Thanks for this.
These methods may work - though as noted above, they look pretty long-winded.
One thing that is an improvement though is the 7TT app mentioned in superuser.com. Choosing the 'text only' display is an improvement over showing the thumbnail display. While it doesn't identify each folder at a glance, it is much easier than clicking on each tab to see the contents.

do you mean: the folders you happen to have open at the moment, in different Explorer windows?
Yes. I have pinned several folders to the taskbar, and keep them open permanently.

If I've got 6 folders open I'd like to color-code, number, or iconify each one for easy recognition.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, right-click the folder, choose the "Customize" tab, and click the "Change Icon..." button.
I did do that originally, and it works for some displays, not not on the taskbar.
I also tried the shortcut method, where I send a shortcut to the taskbar, and change the shortcut properties.
The display within Explorer accepts the change, but the taskbar stubbornly remains with the original icon.

Would this How-To Geek link (Windows 7 oriented) be helpful?
Or a TenForums thread with a similar gist for Windows 10.
Thanks. It looks like it might do the job - though it seems to involve some fairly fiddly setup; perhaps changing themes, and so on.

Hi all,
sorry for the delay in replying - I hadn't set up the reply notificaiton option.
Will look at links now and report back.

For clarification, the Windows Explorer tabs are open on my taskbar, and are all the same pale yellow icon. That icon doesn't change even if I use the above-mentioned option.

Happy new year everyone - there'll be interesting challenges aplenty.

A small but persistent challenge for me is to change the way folders are displayed in my Windows7 taskbar.
If I've got 6 folders open I'd like to color-code, number, or iconify each one for easy recognition.

I've gone through various of the Windows display settings without finding a solution.
For example, I can set up a toolbar organizer that allows me to iconify the links within a given toolbar - but that doesn't do anything with taskbar folder links.

So maybe it's time to dig a bit deeper.
First point of enquiry.... here!

Does anyone know of a tweak or tool that changes the way folder icons are displayed in the taskbar?

Post New Requests Here / iCal to CSV/xls
« on: September 19, 2016, 04:30 AM »
Thanks to the arrival of a super-duper once-a-year newsletter, I am reminded of a question that's been knocking around my thoughts.

I want to take entries from the Lightning calendar in Thunderbird, and convert them to a spreadsheet format.
I use Lightning (and similar calendar apps on my phone) as a daily organiser. I want to extract various things like how much time I've spent on an activity over a month.

I've purchased a verfy helpful Excel plugin called PrintableCal from VueSoft. It does a lot of the heavy lifting. But I still wonder if there's a tool that would essentially run a copy-format-paste operation on the initial iCal data.

I'll skip any further detail for now.
Is anyone aware of an existing tool to do the job?
Or ideas about how to go about it?

Thanks Shades. I have made progress using a combination of MS Word and Libre Office Writer in reformatting, and then printing to PDF, as you suggested. Am very pleased with the native PDF settings available in LOW.

Am discovering that internal bookmarks are not a well-developed element in any text editor I've come across. It would be interesting to have a plugin of some sort for LO that listedonly bookmarks and allowed them to be edited in a separate table.

General Software Discussion / Search & Replace internal hyperlinks
« on: January 03, 2015, 06:48 PM »
Been a looong time since I last checked in to look for a solution... and even longer since I posted a question, but if there's one place on the web where I will find a bunch of interesting and relevant replies, ...  :)

I've got a set of self-edited web pages which link to each other in various ways, where anchors may be hyperlinks, classes or names, and 'bookmarks' using divs with name/id.
Ergo:
<a href="myserver.net/index.html">
<a href="#N0A12bf67">
<div id="tocN0A12bf67">
<a name="N0A12bf67">
<a class="file" href ="foo.txt">

I want to save that set of pages in a document, while keeping the links working, and it seems that I have to rework all the links so they stop pointing to the original web pages.

I have tried various ways of saving to PDF, have C&P into Word and OpenOffice, have even tried some pretty nifty e-book editing apps. So far, some of the links still point to the original URL.

I'm thinking that I may need to ...
a) combine all the pages into one document?
and/or
a) find every anchor.
b) decide if it's internal or external to the current document; then ignore internals as they'll continue to work.
c) modify the external links with new internal links, OR, if I have not combined all the documents into one, modify the links to erm, uh, dunno!

This last bit may depend on whether I'm making a PDF, .doc, or odf. as I suppose I need to make the revised links point to the correct filetype.

I'm pretty sure I need to combine all pages into one document so that when I make the PDF/doc/odf, each link looks within the one document rather than heading off in a failed search of a separate one.

Am thinking I can use cmd.exe to create the concatenated version and save it as HTML.
Thereafter, I would change the URLs to point at itself in the new concatenated format, then print it as a PDF.
Or C&P to word, OO etc.

Am I right so far?
If so, all I ask is whether someone knows a tool that will do all this for me!

:)

Happy New Year!
