If I click either of the links in Firefox, I get this error message page:
We are sorry...

The page you requested is not available at this time.

You can try the following:

    Search Microsoft Community
Go to the Microsoft Community home page

This is consistently repeatable.
If I copy just the location of either of the links, and then paste that into the URL bar, FF takes me to the correct page every time.

If I run the same duckduckgo search in Chromium, I cannot repeat this error - it works fine.
If I click on the pasted links in this post, in FF, it works just fine.

So what is the duckgo search result panel (or its script?) doing to send FF to the wrong page?
This is happening a lot, but seems to only occur with searches linking to microsoft sites, where FF always goes to the above error message page.

In case anyone reading this doesn't realise it, if you have a 64-bit laptop, it will typically have 2 x RAM card slots. Most 64-bit laptops come with 1 x 4Gb or 2 x 4 Gb RAM cards installed, which is pathetically inadequate compared to what a 64-bit laptop is capable of addressing.

If you do not already have them, you can purchase 2 x 8Gb RAM cards to go into those slots, replacing any smaller RAM cards. This potentially WILL make a difference to the speed/responsiveness of ALL memory-intensive operations - e.g., huge Excel spreadsheets, or when opening up several InfoSelect8 .WD2 databases simultaneously. The laptop will take it all in its stride, instead of pausing/choking on trying to manage and operate on too much data with too little RAM.

Well worth it. The 8Gb RAM cards are relatively affordable too.

Suggest you try the website Crucial.com - DRAM, solid state drive (SSD) memory upgrades for Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS.
There you can find compatible memory and SSD upgrades with their Crucial Advisor tool and Crucial System Scanner.
I downloaded their Crucial System Scanner - a very handy tool. It confirmed how much and what type of RAM my laptop could support - i.e., 2 x 8Gb DRAM.

Shop around - I ended up buying 2 x 8Gb Kingston DDR3 PC3l-12800 CL11 204-Pin SODIMM
 - from a local retailer, at a discounted price, after comparing their prices online.

The Dr.Explain deal is here: http://www.bitsdujou...#8090457295218049707

As it was described as "An Amazing Automatic Documentation Authoring Tool", I went to look at the website to see what was so special about it, not having come across it before.
I took a look at the developer's Dr.Explain overview (click on link to read).
It looks as though that overview has been written using Dr.Explain, and it is pretty impressive.

Give yourself at least another 26 unique hotkey combos with Microsoft's remapkey (or other key remapping tool).

I was prompted to mention this upon reading this:
is it easy to change the hotkey combination?

what do you want to change it to?

[ Invalid Attachment ]

^This^ is the bit you need to change -- I always forget (I *think Ctrl='^'), and need to look up the AHK site.
I know from the screenshot that:
# = Winkey
and that's it....

so,
only half a solution -- or maybe just a quarter ;-)
__________________________

What sort of use would a ridiculous hotkey combo LeftShift+RightShift+I be?
For me, it is very useful, as I use that as an AHK hotkey to launch InfoSelect, and I use the combo LeftShift+RightShift+V to launch the VLC media player. The LeftShift+RightShift combo keys are very handy, as no-one in their right mind would generally have a use for that combo, so they are "all yours".

It's not that I have a huge hand span or anything. I select the LeftShift+RightShift keys with the first two fingers of my left hand, and the next character with right or left hand fingers, depending on where the key is.

I can do that by the simple expedient of remapping the RightShift key to the CapsLock key. Of course, if you have a use for the latter key, then another key would be required. The objective would be to give yourself a ridiculous pair of keys close together.

The only caveat I would have is that the Win10 updates seem to set the keyboard mappings back to the standard default - and they also restore file associations to the standard default too. Updates to earlier Windows OS versions didn't used to do those things.
Hope this tip helps or is of use to someone. It's been very useful to me.

As a sufferer of CRIMP*, over the years I have trialled probably hundreds of pieces of software for PIMs (Personal Information Managers) - including Wikis, database tools and computerised card-indexes.

CRIMP stands for a make-believe malady called compulsive-reactive information management purchasing. Symptoms include:
   • never being satisfied with your current system of information management
   • continuously being on the look-out for something newer and better
   • purchasing every new PIM program you learn about
   • and secretly hoping you won’t find the perfect PIM, because then you’d have to stop looking for a better one

So, when someone speaks of succumbing to his or her CRIMP, it means acknowledging that they’ve purchased another PIM program even though they really don’t think they need it.
There must be a 12-step program for over-coming CRIMP, but who really wants to? It’s too much fun.

Usually, when I write a mini-review on DCF, I do as thorough a job as I can. Since that takes time/effort - due to the constipated nature of making tabled posts and embedding RTF and links and images in this forum - I usually only write about the particularly potentially good/useful software/service that I find, and, having made that not inconsiderable effort, I try to maintain/update the reviews from time to time so as they remain reasonably current and thus still potentially useful.
However, the "also-rans" have rarely warranted much of a mention from me.

Until now, that is. Earlier this year I changed my work methods and began to methodically use OneNote to capture more of my activities in a Journal form, and this included trials/evaluations of all PIMs and other software - i.e., including the also-rans. So, I am now slowly building notes on the also-rans, which is useful when I next see them available on (say) BDJ, as I can quickly see and refresh my memory as to what my conclusions were the last time that I looked at the software on sale or being given away, and without putting any real effort into it.

Thus, in the discussion thread below are presented my brief review notes (and perhaps other people's too) on the PIMs in the index:
  • Essential PIM Pro (originally posted 2015-12-12 in the OP; later moved into the discussion thread)
  • The Journal - an extended daily journal/diary system.

I have actually used this software in 2014, and here are my notes about it (copied from my OneNote PIM):
2014-01-28 1446hrs: d/l + install WonderFox HD Video Converter Factory Pro via BitsDuJour (FREE):
  • Doesn't seem to be very good or efficient at what it is supposed to do.
  • Tried to "merge" 4 x .VOB files and the output at 8Gb was about 3 x larger than the collective input files added together.

I recall spending quite a bit of time trying to see what on my system might have been causing the above problems, but I gave up eventually, so it remains a mystery.

Having said that, Wonderfox seems to have some good/interesting stuff, and this is my take on some other Wonderfox software that I got for $FREE:
2012-08-17 0248hrs: Installed this - WonderFox Document Manager: (Verdict - Not much cop.)
  • 2014-10-28 0118hrs: I recall trying it out briefly, but I think this must have been useless for my purposes, as I seem to have expunged it.

2014-10-27 1601hrs: d/l + install WonderFox DVD Ripper PRO:
  • Tried it out on ripping a few videos. Seems to work well and is less constrained than DVD Shrink (could copy videos that DVD Shrink could not copy), and much faster.
  • Not sure what the diff is between the DVD Ripper "SpeedY and "PRO" versions.

I think I shall try out HD Video Converter Factory Pro again and see if I have any better luck with it this time.

A PC and mobile phone user asked me today if I could help to find some possibly obsolete software. It is not something that I am familiar with, so I am posting this on the offchance that a collective "Brains Trust" of DCF denizens might be able to throw much more useful light on the topic than I might be able to do on my own.

This is the gist of it, as far as I have it at the moment:
  • This person says they have been using a mobile phone "Telecom R1" from TNZ (Telecom NZ) for several years now and had previously downloaded the Zte Join Me PC client software (which had been documented in the user manual as to where it could be downloaded from). The software was very useful in archiving text etc. onto the user's PC.

  • However, due to a recent upgrade and re-installation of WinXP onto their computer, it seems that the Join Me software has inadvertently been lost/deleted.  :(

  • Having recently purchased two more of the R1 (TNZ) phones, this user wishes to upload files and texts to those new phones as well, using Join Me, but cannot find the software now.

  • The user has been in contact with http://www.ztedevice.com/ - makers of the phone - and it seems they do not support the phone with the Join Me software any more. Enquiries made to Telecom and the vendors of the phone get pointed back to Zte, so it seems to be a dead end.

  • Whilst this user can Bluetooth just the contacts across to a PC, they also need to get the texts from colleagues (i.e., text messages that are on the old phone) copied off the phone and saved to a PC and then copied across onto the new phones as well.
    ________________

So what seems to be needed is information about potential sources for an intact archived copy of the Join Me software, or information about any useful forums that might be able to help.

What are the rules for local v. public index/search of DC Forum + Wayback saves? I'm not sure whether the rules are somehow broken, or working as specified (rightly or wrongly).

When trying to see if I might be able to help/contribute more in a discussion on a topic in DCF, I will often resort to:
  • (a) Exploring the DC Forum - by using the local search functionality provided - to search for some of the terms used in the discussion, and to see what else might have been mentioned about that topic elsewhere on the Forum.

  • (b) Exploring more widely by doing a duckgo search of some of the terms used in the discussion, to see what else might have been mentioned about that topic elsewhere on the Internet.

  • (c) Conducting Wayback searches for links/URLs which are old or give a 404 response.

If the searches turned up some useful links then I would often post whatever I found - e.g., the DC Forum links, or the duckgo search URL, or the Wayback URL - into the discussion, on the basis that being specific with references was likely to be more useful than than simply saying something such as, for example, "We already discussed that on DC Forum", or "RTFM", or "Look in Wayback", or something.

However, I am a bit confuzzled by what I have observed in an ad hoc manner as and when I have performed searches, and over an extended period from some time back, because sometimes:
  • (i) Some text strings of more than adequate length could not be found in local searches of DCF - that is, using the DCF local search function. I had presumed this could be the result of (say) either a local indexing failure, or deliberate site blocking (non-indexing) of certain strings/posts by admins.

  • (ii) Some text strings of more than adequate length were not found in some or any DC Forum posts, in duckgo searches, even though the strings were in one or more DC Forum posts. I had presumed this could be the result of (say) deliberate site blocking - e.g., (say) robots.txt of certain strings/posts, or other blocking, so that search crawlers were inhibited/blocked.

  • (iii) Some discussion threads in the main DCF forum being unavailable in Wayback beyond a certain point due to robots.txt blocking. I had presumed this could be the result of deliberate site blocking of certain strings/posts by admins.

  • (iv) Some posts appearing in the DCF "Best Of Blog" but with the wrong date and time of posting. I had presumed this could be the result of an indexing rule error.

Any daylight on this would be helpful.

I must have been asleep, or something.
If you haven't heard of or are not already using LINE, then you might be very interested in this.
I hadn't been able to find it discussed in the DC forum, but I apologise in advance for any duplication.
(Skip to the details in the bulleted items in the list below.)

LINE logo VoIP.png  http://linecorp.com/en/ - Over 400 million users in 2015 so far, and estimates are it will reach 700 million by year end.

A couple of weeks ago, I was given a Nokia "Lumia" 830 smartphone to try out. I was delighted at the opportunity, as it has the Windows OS, and I was primarily interested as I wanted to test out the MS Office apps  - especially for OneNote and the Office Lens app (those apps all, by the way, work very nicely indeed - I highly recommend them, and the $FREE Office Lens app is superb).

My 14 y/o daughter had been hinting for some time that she wanted a phone, so I gave the phone to her to use, but without a SIM, as I did not want to get her conditioned to the idea that she needed to or could freely run up a phone bill.
She took it to school and connected it to the WiFi there, making a connection to a shared OneNote Notebook - a working concept/tool that I had been teaching her to use, with Excel, for a data-rich science project she was conducting at school. She already uses MS Office (Word and Publisher) and I have introduced her to Excel (which has blown her away, as it makes such light work of the data analysis on her science project).
I downloaded several $FREE games apps to the phone, and she found and downloaded some more. As I had not linked any payment devices/sources to the phone, she could not inadvertently purchase anything - I learned from my mistake with the Kindle in that regard, and even my 3½ y/o son had made a book purchase at one point (he's 5 y/o now).
The games seemed to be the main objective from that point on, as both my daughter and son started to play endless games on the phone, trying to beat each others' latest high score in a desperate, spiralling contest of egos.
Needless to say, I found this focus on games/entertainment somewhat disappointing, but not unexpected. Kids are kids, after all.

Then my daughter mentioned that a Thai school friend of hers used an HTC phone with a $FREE text chat client app called "Line", and kept in touch with her family back in Thailand using that.
Hearing that, my Thai wife reminded me that she had already told me that, from her phone conversations to Thailand family/friends some time ago, they had referred to something called "Line", and that I had drawn a blank at the time and thought it was just a proprietary Thai Telecom thing.

So I did a duckgo search, and came up with loads of references to LINE. I was amazed. Started in 2011 (see Wikipedia notes below), users currently number over 400 million and counting, projected to pass 700 million by the end of the year. What was this thing?

So I downloaded the free app. When it installed, it didn't necessitate any attached ID, but said it had to set up a Line Account and asked for an email address or a phone number for security (even though there was no SIMM in the phone), so I gave it my personal mobile number to see what it would do. It texted a 4-digit code (with a 30-minute life) to my personal mobile, to feed into the LINE app. When I typed it in, that confirmed a link between my LINE Account ID and the phone number. The system then conformed that my LINE account was thus set up and operational. Within seconds, the LINE contacts list started to be populated with LINE contacts who had my phone number in their contacts list. These contacts were in "groups" and my account was then being automatically linked to associative groups. My account was also being forwarded by these people to others. Each contact was alerted that my ID (with that phone number) had come online as a LINE account ID.
A few minutes later, my wife and daughter were on the phone using txt messaging, voice calling, and video calling to family and friends (in Thai and English) - people whom we had not spoken to in ages. and whom we thought we had lost contact with. (During this period, my daughter downloaded a $FREE Thai keyboard app so as we could type in that language also.)
It brought tears to my eyes to see my wife crying with happiness at this communication with much-missed family and friends, and her joining in the group discussion that was going on at the same time. She walked some of her video callers around our apartment, to show them what it was like, so I had this new experience of being "visited" by one of her younger sisters as I sat on the bed with my laptop on my knees. I waved at my visitor and greeted her in Thai and she waved cheerily back, apparently accustomed to such such virtual "visits".

They spent hours on the phone, calling friends and family in places including Thailand, South Africa, Europe, and I don't know where else. I discovered I have a contact in South Korea too.

  • Line (application) - Wikipeda
Line (styled "LINE") is a proprietary application for instant communications on electronic devices such as smartphones, tablet computers and personal computers. Line users exchange texts, images, video and audio, and conduct free VoIP conversations and video conferences. Line was designed by 15 members of New Human Network (NHN) Japan's development team, composed of Korean, Japanese, Chinese and American engineers. The idea of Line communication system was proposed to NHN Japan by Lee Hae Jin, the Chief Strategy Officer of NHN. It first launched in Japan in 2011, reaching 100 million users within eighteen months and 200 million users only six months later.[1] Line became Japan's largest social network in 2013. In October 2014 Line announced that it had attracted 560 million users worldwide with 170 million active user accounts.[2][3] In February 2015, it announced the 600 million mark had been passed and 700 million were expected by the end of the year.[4]

  • From Japan, The Biggest Social Network You Never Heard Of
'Line' Has Gone Viral With Consumers, Fueled by Ads and Stiff Fees for Business
By John Stampfel. Published on June 14, 2013.

The Japanese spend a lot of time commuting, and mobile devices are an essential part of the journey. Commuting accounts for 28 percent of mobile-device usage time in Japan, with social-media consuming a hefty chunk of it.

Nine months ago, nearly everyone on my daily commuter train was using Twitter, which now has 20 million users in Japan. But most of have since switched to the homegrown platform, Line, which was launched in 2011 by NHN Japan after the Tohoku earthquake. The name refers to the lines that formed outside of public phones after the disaster.

Driven by strong advertising support and celebrity endorsements, the app, which provides free IM and calling via smartphones, tablets and desktops, is now the world's fastest-growing social network. It recently reached 50 million followers in just 399 days. In January 2013, Line's total number of Japanese followers hit 40 million; and a whopping 60 percent of Japanese women in their 20s and 30s, Line's research shows, use the platform every day.

Line and its parent NHN (which also owns Naver, Korea's largest search portal) have monetized the network by motivating users not only to follow brands but to take action, which has made Line incredibly attractive to marketers in retail. According to research commissioned by Line, more than half of female users follow official brands. In addition, 63 percent of all users read brand messages, 32 percent have used a coupon delivered via Line, and 27 percent have clicked on a link.

Unlike Facebook, however, advertisers can use the platform only if they pay. There is a fixed-rate card, and the number of messages is strictly controlled. For example, a four-week campaign with five messages will cost 8 million yen ($81,000), while a 12-week campaign offering 15 messages (at a maximum of two per week) will set you back 15 million yen ($151,000).

Brands can use messages to link to content or offer coupons, presents and prizes. There are additional charges if brands want to create sponsored stamps, a form of emoticons that are hugely popular in Manga-obsessed Japan. These are based on client creative but generated by Line. And marketers have major incentives to remain on Line for the long haul, as a decision to stop paying means a brand's account is deleted and it loses not just followers but the content that was created.

None of this tight control has put off potential advertisers, which now include Coca-Cola, Lawson convenience stores and the Sukiya fast-food chain. When Matsumoto Kiyoshi, a drug store chain, needed to attract more customers aged 10-20, it offered a 10%-off coupon via Line and, within five days, more than 10,000 people had used one -- half of them in the target group. An additional 300,000 people also started following the brand on Line.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Line's fast rise and its ad-funded business model is that so many businesses have bought into it so quickly. While consumers are quick to leap onto the next big thing, businesses in Japan are notoriously wary of new platforms. The constant search for first-mover advantage is simply not as ingrained in the marketing psyche as it is in Western countries.

As Line becomes more global, NHN will get the chance to see whether these characteristics apply outside of Asia. Early results appear promising: Line claims on its English-language website that it is the most downloaded app in more than 40 countries and available in 230 markets. Services such as avatar community Line Play have recently become available in English, and the app itself is available for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows phones. In February, Line signed a deal with Nokia to make it available on Asha handsets across Asia. Line's status as the biggest social network you've never heard off won't last for long.

Send messages and make free calls from your PC
Alan Le Bihan    Communication software Internet phone
        LINE 300 Million Users

LINE is an instant messaging application and VoIP platform that lets you send messages and make free voice and video calls, and it has a Windows client so that you can do all it all from your PC.

    Free calling and messaging
LINE’s main purpose is to help you communicate with your friends for free. Just like Skype, Facebook Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and many others, LINE lets you send free text messages and chat with friends who are also using this app; you can even start group chats. LINE also includes VoIP features so that you can also make voice and video calls.

LINE aims to differentiate itself from the competition by adding features that will appeal to its younger users: in addition to the traditional messages and photo and audio sharing features, LINE includes many stickers which you can add to your conversations for a little fun. These emoticons will brighten the dullest conversations, and there are many more which can be downloaded.

A simple interface to focus on the essentials
The PC version of LINE comes with a minimalist interface. Three tabs give you access to your contact list, your current conversations, and lets you add new friends. The client is very easy to use, and to log in to the PC client, all you have to do is scan a QR code with your smartphone.

LINE for PC is the perfect extension for the mobile version. You can start a conversation on your smartphone and continue later on your computer.

If you use LINE on your mobile, you’ll like the PC version because you’ll be able to enjoy the same features. It lets you access your LINE contacts and talk with them comfortably when you are home and using your PC.

    Installation
To use the PC version of LINE, you must have the LINE app installed on your mobile.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Unable to edit text of clip in search results
« on: September 26, 2015, 07:30 PM »
If I do a search of clips in CHS for (say) the text string "duches" and pull up only 2 clips (ticked as "favourite") with the string "duches" in them, I am unable to edit either clip because the cursor dodges about as it keeps returning to the start of the highlighted search string in the clip being edited.

I think CHS has behaved like this for quite a while, and this behaviour is repeatable.

I'm not sure whether it behaves like this because of something I am doing.
Am I doings something wrong? Is there a workaround?

"Another one bites the dust."

I only discovered by chance that Google Drive webhosting functionality is to be shut down by Google.
It was from here: Google Starts Deprecating Web Hosting Support In Google Drive | TechCrunch
(Copied below sans embedded hyperlinks/images.)
Posted Aug 31, 2015 by Frederic Lardinois (@fredericl)

One of the lesser-known features of Google Drive has always been its ability to host basic web sites for free. If you only found out about this from the preceding sentence, you now have one year to enjoy this tool. Google today announced that it will deprecate the web hosting service starting today and will turn it off completely on August 31, 2016.

The company says that in the time since it launched this feature three years ago, “a wide variety of public web content hosting services have emerged,” so it has decided to discontinue the feature in order to focus on the core user experience in Drive. That’s been the standard reason for Google to deprecate services lately, but it’s still a bit of a surprise that the company would turn off hosting support.

For now, you can still use Drive to host basic sites that only need a few JavaScript resources and CSS files. You can’t use any server-side scripting tools, of course, but Drive has always been a useful service for quickly putting up a basic site. It even offers an API for developers.

Google itself, of course, offers Google Sites as part of its Google Apps for Work package as an alternative. It feels like it’s been a while since Sites got any major update, though, and it doesn’t quite offer the same flexibility when hosting your own sites.

It’s worth noting that others, like GitHub, for example, have long offered a very similar service. In addition, you can also use Amazon’s S3 cloud storage service, Dropbox and a number of other services for hosting basic sites.

Beginning August 31st, 2015, web hosting in Google Drive for users and developers will be deprecated. You can continue to use this feature for a period of one year until August 31st, 2016, when we will discontinue serving content via googledrive.com/host/[doc id].

In the time since we launched web hosting in Drive, a wide variety of public web content hosting services have emerged. After careful consideration, we have decided to discontinue this feature and focus on our core user experience.

For those who have used Drive to host websites, Google Domains can refer you to third parties for website hosting functionality.

For those who use this feature to serve non-user content to web and mobile applications, Google Cloud Platform offers a better-performing solution.

Google Drive - a safe place for all your files (650).png

Definition: "deprecate" = a new ambiguous and  clichéd euphemism to be used at all times in place of anything remotely specific but especially including such as  "shut down", "terminate", "kill off", "remove (life) support".
Never to be used in the same sentence with "excited".
Avoid confusion with "depreciate", "deprecatingly", "decapitate".
Usage: "the terrorist was deprecated with prejudice after decapitating his prisoner", or "we deprecated 2,000 of our personnel today as a cost-cutting measure", "the HR manager responsible for hiring the unabomber onto the corporate payroll has been deprecated", "we deprecated the solar generation plant as it had depreciated to zero with no residual value".

DC Gamer Club / Fallout 3 (GOTYE) on Windows 10 Pro.
« on: September 17, 2015, 12:07 PM »
Note: "GOTYE" = "Game of the Year Edition".

We had been given some gift vouchers to spend at a high street IT chain store, so we went to their store to buy a computer game, and came away with my daughter's choice, which was Fallout 3.
It installed the Steam delivery system and required GFWL (Games For Windows Live) to be installed and running as well.
After a bit of mucking about recovering our relatively unused GFWL signon ID/Password, Steam, the game, and GFWL were installed and ran fine on a Samsung-S3 (Series 3) laptop with standard Windows 10 update.

A couple of days later I installed the thing (Steam, the game, and GFWL) on a Toshiba Satellite L855D laptop with Windows 10 Pro. It all seemed to install OK, but it wouldn't run - kept coming up with the same nondescript error at startup:

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

For several hours I scoured the discussion forums, searching for a solution or a workaround.
Not being able to run Fallout 3 on Win8 or Win10 seemed to be a common problem.
There were two very useful posts at steamcommunity.com:

However, after several hours of playing Sherlock Holmes and repeatedly reinstalling the thing on the Toshiba-L855D, using different tweaks here and there, I still couldn't get Fallout 3 to run. So near, and yet so far! Very frustrating.
I checked and compared, and found that game installation folders/files and Steam components were identical on both laptops, but I had noticed that, on both laptops, GFWL Client had been set to run at Windows startup, and, out of interest tonight I compared the GFWL files as installed on each laptop, and noticed a difference:

One subfolder was different: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\Redist\DirectX
 - on the ToshibaL855D, there were only two files in that folder, and though the same two were in the corresponding folder on the Samsung-S3, on the latter the folder held a few more files, so I copied them across to the ToshibaL855D folder, leaving it with these in all:
  • APR2007_xinput_x86.cab
    Aug2009_d3dx10_42_x86.cab
    Aug2009_d3dx9_42_x86.cab
    DSETUP.dll
    dsetup32.dll
    dxdllreg_x86.cab
    DXSETUP.exe
    dxupdate.cab

I then ran DXSETUP.exe, after which I stopped and restarted the GFWL Client, logged in to GFWL, and then started the Fallout 3 game after searching for the link using the Start menu: "Fallout 3 - Game of the Year Edition".
It seems to work OK now, though I have only now started playing it.
I suspect it will have been worth all the trouble, but I thought I'd post my notes about it here, in case they might be of help/use to others with similar Fallout 3 problems under Win10.

DC Gamer Club / Viva Piñata - can it be run on Windows 10?
« on: August 25, 2015, 08:13 PM »
Viva Piñata: This game is/was a favourite of my daughter's, and I have been trying to get it to run under Windows 10, but so far no joy.
Has anyone here managed to get VP to run under Win10? I'd be interested in comparing notes.
I have scoured many web forums for ideas, but to no avail.
TIA.

I stumbled upon this today whilst searching for something unrelated. It looked interesting, so I downloaded the game. I checked and it is/was already included in the Vista Ultimate Plus installation that I have configured on an old laptop.

Download the Freeware from Softpedia - Tinker
 - where it says:
Editor's Review
Tinker is one of the most memorable titles you can play. It’s a great looking puzzle game in which the main character is a tiny robot who you must guide through a large number of scenarios that require a good dose of brainpower to complete.

An example of excellent game design in all aspects
Tinker is charming from the first second you lay eyes on it. Even as a grownup you can’t hold back a smile when seeing the little guy and that smile gets a bit bigger when you see how he gently slaps switches and does his victory dance.

However, not all the creativity went into the visual design of the game. Along with smiles, Tinker also causes a decent amount of frowning, you know, the kind that takes over your face when you have no idea how to solve the puzzle that’s in front of you. Expect plenty of that because Tinker is quite terrific brain-tease.

Play 60 levels that define the notion of a great puzzle game
In terms of gameplay, the mechanics are easy to understand. In each level you are placed on a rectangular surface with a checkerboard pattern and you share that space with the puzzle components. There is good deal of those and they range from simple ice blocks to magnets, you have mirrors to work with, teleportation pads, magnets, lasers and a whole lot more.

Tinker supplies 60 levels and each one is unique in how it looks and how it’s solved. You will always have to deal with different mechanics and interactions between the objects, switches and everything else. Often enough, you might just take a moment to enjoy the creativity that went into creating each puzzle.

If you haven’t played it by now, don’t waste any more time
For puzzle game fans and not only, Tinker is a perfect example of how you can create something that’s excellent in every way. It’s not the best, but it’s definitely one of the best experiences you will have with a game of this sort.

I think this game is going to drive me batty.

Living Room / Comparison of FREE Cloud Storage services.

EDIT: 2015-06-07 0524hrs: Title of this opening post was changed to reflect what this thread seems to be turning into.

OneDrive v. Google Drive?
I have been mulling over this comparison for a while.
As far as I am aware, OneDrive does not muck about with (e.g., alter or compress) your files, whereas Google Drive does.
From experience, for documents, Google Drive/Docs will create "GDocs" copies of some of your files, and duplicate them, then later delete and update them to new formats. All without the user's say-so.
The duplication comes from when they changed "labels" to "folders", thus forcing duplication of documents which you had tagged with multiple labels. That seriously pissed me off. The labelling was a brilliant idea and they should have left well enough alone.
For images and videos, Gdrive is unreliable in Picasa, because they compress your images/videos, and it's a one-way lossy compression, so you can't rely on Gdrive for uncorrupted backup of your photos OR videos.
So, from my perspective, Gdrive is unreliable - not so OneDrive.

However, I don't really have that much experience of OneDrive, except that it does a sterling job with my OneNote Notebooks and User Preferences syncing and MS Office document storage/backup (as one would expect), but I was unsure of the image/video storage aspects.

What I wanted was someone else to tell me about their greater experience.

I just found this by Glen Lipka:

Google Drive vs. Microsoft OneDrive
2015-06-02

I have been using OneDrive for a while now as our cloud service. However, complaints have forced me to reconsider. Here is a quick summary of my thoughts on the subject.

Pricing
OneDrive pricing.
15 GB    Free
100 GB    $1.99/month
200 GB    $3.99/month
1 TB    $6.99/month (includes Office 365)

Google Drive Pricing.
15 GB    Free
100 GB    $1.99/month
1 TB    $9.99/month (includes Google Apps)

They both offer office apps, but the full Microsoft Office suite is much more powerful and has both online and offline versions. With that said, Google is still 50% more expensive at the 1TB level.

Price Winner: Microsoft

Displaying Pictures/Videos
I have alot of photos online. I used to use Picassa, but it just didn’t the one feature I needed – folders! I organize my photos by year and then by month. Tags aren’t always good enough. I loved the Picasa photo editor, especially the red-eye removal, but without folders it just wasn’t going to work for me. Recently, Picasa has been merging into Google+. Actually, it’s pretty confusing what is happening there. I don’t use Google+, so I just don’t know what to think about their solution. With Picasa, YouTube, Google+ and Drive it is hard to understand what Google is doing. It feels like a lack of leadership/coordination to me.

On the other side, Microsoft does a great job of creating a nice interface for pictures. It has lightboxes and plenty of options. No red-eye removal, but the experience for viewers has been pretty good. My only complaint for Microsoft has been the lack of proper codecs to display DivX videos. It can display simpler formats, but I usually compress my videos using the DivX converter so they take up less space.

Display Winner: Microsoft

Sync Stability
If Microsoft had this part of the system under control, I would just give them the crown. It’s a better UI at a better price. However, the sync stability has been a nightmare. They are trying to embed this into the operating system, but honestly, they just fucked it up royally. Constant sync errors and confusing UI makes me worried about losing files constantly. The error icon is constant and the solution (re-open the file) is sketchy at best. Microsoft Office asks me the question, “Do you want to keep the server version or yours?”. This would be fine if they gave me a way to DIFF the two versions. How the hell should I know which is the right version?! They were supposed to be sync’d. No one else is editing!

You can see how Sync problems are by far the most infuriating issue. The importance of a stable sync can not be exaggerated.  Google’s sync, seems to be much more elegant. The progress of the sync is much clearer. It also asks you if you mean to delete on both the server and local. (Microsoft is unclear when this happens). The speed seems ok so far.  I have to test it more, but right now…

Winner: Google
___________________________________

Sharing and Identity Management
They basically have the same sharing model. However, Microsoft wants you to use their Microsoft account and Google wants you to use their Google account. (Duh!) So it comes down to which one of those accounts is more prevalent in people’s lives, especially me and my family.  The answer is: We all use GMail. None of us use Microsoft. My phone is Google, my watch is Google.

Microsoft has tried numerous times to improve their email client, but ultimately, I keep having spam problems. Using GMail (and most recently Inbox) eliminates spam from my life. I’m not switching. Also, the Microsoft Phone is still DOA, so I am not buying that either.

Winner: Google
___________________________________

Summary – Split Decision!
So for now, I switched all of my normal files to Google Drive but left all of the photos and video at OneDrive. There are fewer sync problems with photos because I am not actively editing them.  I will experiment with the photos at Google, but the extra storage expense is making me wary.

I hope this comparison helped you in some way. I’m just trying to educate, engage and entertain.  Not always in that order.
___________________________________

In my case, OneDrive would seem to be:
  • The winner on price. (From the costs given in the above.)
  • The winner on display. (I learned that from the above.)
  • The winner on sync. (From my experience, though syncing images/videos has yet to be tested by me.)
  • The winner on Sharing and Identity Management. (Outlook being far superior in functionality and integration with Social Networking.)
  • The winner on Data Integrity & Security. (QED).

Couple this with the Cavalier approach of Google in it unilateral killing-off of Google products, leaving the users with nothing else, then any Google user would probably be wise to reconsider whether their data was actually safe in Google's hands. The reverse would seem to be more clearly the case.
So, it looks like it's "Goodbye Google" from me to even more of their services, in addition to those they have already pulled.

1.0 Intro and Overview:
Both versions are excellent accounting packages and were generally recognised as being market leaders up to the point when MS pulled out of the market.
Whether you want a tool to help you better manage your personal finances, or to manage a business, this software will do extremely well. You'd have to pay out quite a lot of money to buy anything similar.
As a lapsed accountant with long experience of, and a keen interest in, accounting systems and software, I can say from that experience that I have yet to come across a better-written or more comprehensive commercial accounting package developed for home or business use.
The "suck-it-and-see" approach (try it out for real) would probably verify that for most users who might be interested in finding out.

The table below shows a comparison of Sunset (and earlier) version features:

MS Money - 02 MS Money Versions.png

2.0 Using MS Money (Sunset)
2.1 Start-up: After installation (using whichever of the 2 Sunset versions you wanted), when you start up MS Money you will see this screen:

2.4 Tutorials: There are some quite useful/helpful video tutorials. These can be started from the menu, or directly from the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles\WebCache\  (Start with the smallest file, MSMoneyTour.swf, which will load the others.)

  • MSMoneyTour.swf   16.2kB
  • tourIntro.swf       4.1MB

MS Money - 06 Support videos.png

3.0 Who this software is designed for:
Home or business users wanting to manage their financial affairs and budgets.

4.0 The Good:
Software which is just very good and well-designed for what it does.
Ergonomically very good and intuitive GUI, and a very good Help manual and context help/tips.
Suits elementary and complex requirements alike.
If this was the first accounting and budgeting package that you started to use, then it could very well be the last, as you would probably stick with it.

5.0 The needs improvement section:
Nothing to report here.
However, if you had wanted the costly service add-ons of an accounting package that can operate online service transactions with your bank account, then you would be out of luck. Those bundled services were disabled in the Sunset product, since banks would be (or were) unwilling to support online services to a retired product.

6.0 Why I think you should use this product:
For home or business users wanting to better manage their financial affairs and budgets, this software could be of enormous help.

7.0 How it compares to similar software
It used to, and probably still does, outclass most other accounting packages in this market sector (home & business accounting and budgeting software).
When MS pulled out of the market, the leaders included:
  • Quicken,
  • Intuit, and
  • MYOB.
- producing variously good desktop accounting package and/or online accounting services (e.g., similar to MSN Live MS Money).
There is a lesser-known product called NewViews that was a superb DOS-based accounting package, which was belatedly rewritten with a full GUI for the Windows OS - it could well be a a good alternative to MS Money or the other contenders.

8.0 Conclusions:
The MS Money Sunset packages are superb value-for-money at $FREE.
You would probably have to spend several hundreds of dollars to get anything else as good.

In the context of PIMs (Personal Information Managers) and Note-taking tools, and after reading an interesting discussion thread on OutlinerSoftware about this, I am just wondering whether DC Forum denizens might have some experience or information to offer on this subject.
Synology Note Station appears to be a proprietary multi-text and even multimedia (image, video and audio) scrapbooking and note-taking system which is locked-in to only run on Synology NAS devices.

The discussion thread at OutlinerSoftware is currently:

Outliner Software: Synology Note Station

Having recently acquired a new Synology server to replace our old, trusty but finally expired CubeStation, I’ve been very impressed by the Note Station module that can be installed on the exceptionally capable operating system behind all Synology servers (DSM 5.2 at the time of writing). It’s a really powerful multi-pane note-taking tool that allows you to share notebooks, enter rich-text notes (or indeed graphics, recordings and other attachments), and even offers a note-integrated task management facility.

The search function is still a little basic, but the rest of it is awesome. You can create ‘shelves’ for your notebooks, which basically nest them (rather like Ulysses: if you click on the ‘shelf’, it shows you all the contents of the embedded notebooks, or you can select individual notebooks to see their notes exclusively; it also has an ‘All Notes’ function). You can create tags. You can capture web page contents directly to notebooks using a nice web clipper extension for Chrome that is not unlike OneNote’s (so you can choose to save the simplified ‘article’ view instead of the full web page view). Oh, and you can import your Evernote notebooks, too (indeed, the whole thing is clearly inspired by Evernote). The search function is very fast, so the system appears to full-text index everything, but although you can constrain searches by date, notebook etc., search results simply list the notes containing the text you’re looking for - there are no highlights inside the notes, and no useful snippet previews of relevant sentences in the list of results. You can move from note to note (the search result shares the same left-hand navigation tree as the standard note management window), but you won’t see pretty highlights. Still, can’t have everything!

For to-do management, you can create to-dos from within notes. In this case, they will appear in a separate list when you click the ‘to-do’ icon in the navigation bar above the relevant note, so you can have any number of to-dos associated with a given note. Even better, they will also appear in a separate list of to-dos that also includes reminders, priorities and can be sorted by date. You can jump directly from a to-do in this list to the associated rich-text note (useful because the notes, again like OneNote, support checkboxes, complex tables and other such task management paraphernalia). This jump function doesn’t work, by the by, in the mobile app (yet), but the software appears to be evolving very rapidly.

Currently the whole thing runs through a web browser (although you can set up the server so it opens directly into notebooks for you, effectively treating a Chrome tab as an application). Best of all, there’s a very good app for iOS - called DS Note - that runs very nicely on iPad. I’m just checking out the iPhone version to see if it’s as nice as the iPad one. Ah, yes, it is. Very nicely done. It even shows web pages. Excellent!

One of the advantages of running stuff on your own Synology server is the company’s QuickConnect function, whereby you can set up a direct link to your server from anywhere at all, protected by HTTPS if you wish (always advisable). This is seriously useful. For me, it’s a no-brainer: this immediately supersedes Evernote, because it’s under my direct control and I can share stuff with colleagues (and friends and family) if I wish to. The sharing function is very powerful, and you can share entire notebooks with a couple of clicks, as well as individual notes.

Indeed, it even supports sharing through a fairly broad selection of social media. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all evolves, I must say.

I hope this is useful for others interested in collaborative note taking! For those alarmed at the thought of buying an entire server just to get access to an outliner/info management app, do bear in mind that Synology servers are incredibly capable machines that support all platforms, are compatible with e.g. Apple Time Machine and have their own built-in file version management system, and are available in many different guises, ranging from very modestly priced single-drive machines to huge rack-mounted monsters with multiple disk arrays. Our old CubeStation was a four-disk NAS, but this time we’ve opted for a two-disk NAS (a DiskStation) because we already synchronise most of our key work files to the Cloud. This machine will act as a secondary backup option plus a useful repository for other info. The two disks are held in an advanced RAID array called a Synology Hybrid configuration. No idea what that means, but one disk is mirrored to the other, which means that running a couple of Western Digital Red 3TB disks, we’re got about 2.7 TB of storage space. Oh, and the DiskStation itself can use OneDrive for Cloud backups, too, so if you’ve got an Office 365 subscription, you can use some of your 1TB of storage space for DiskStation backups. I think the word I’m searching for is ‘neat’. Or possibly ‘awesome’.

Cheers,
Bill

Thanks Bill.
I just checked: Note Station is also available for my DS115j NAS. I’ll install it after my holidays. This could be the easiest way to replace Evernote as notetaker on Win/OSX/iOS.
Best wishes, Franz

Ah, another Synology lover. Yes, although it’s still only at version 1.xxx, Note Station appears to be developing very rapidly now: the task management apps were only introduced with the last revision, but already come across as fairly mature (apart from the glaring omission of a note link from the task lists on iOS). In fact, I’m toying with the idea of moving my ever-mobile task management over to the DiskStation…

There are various references on DC Forum to Synology NAS ("Network Attached Storage"), but none seem to refer to Synology "Note Station" software running on the NAS - or at least, I couldn't find any reference, or might have missed it.

According to the Synology website Download centre for the Synology hardware ID of DS115 NAS:
Note Station helps you fully enjoy writing, viewing, managing, and sharing content-rich notes. It is very easy to create content with rich text editing, media embedding, attachments, and much more. Manage your notes by using tags and grouping notes into Notebooks. When you are ready, Note Station makes sharing your content via social networking platforms simple and quick. Create, share, and enjoy!

The release notes at that download indicate that the product is at an early stage of its life-cycle (first released 2014-12-09), so there is likely to be more to come:

The blog.easydns.org has this post: (copied here for information/searching.)
Unfortunately, we have renewed our ICANN Accreditation - blog.easydns.org
(Copied below sans embedded hyperlinks/images.)
May 20, 2015 Mark Jeftovic

easyDNS has met the automatic renewal requirements under our ICANN Registrar Accreditation Agreement and will thus renew into the 2013 RAA on June 23rd, 2015,

WHY THIS IS UNFORTUNATE
This means that as of June 23rd we will be subject to enforcing the new Whois Accuracy Program (WAP) which was enacted by ICANN earlier this year. All registrants of any domains under which easyDNS is directly accredited (.COM, .NET, .ORG .BIZ, and .INFO) will henceforth be subject to the WAP. (Note, all new GTLDs such as .website, .host and are handled through our OpenSRS Resellers tag and are thus already subject to the WAP).

WHAT IS THE WHOIS ACCURACY PROGRAM?
The Whois Accuracy Program (WAP) was created by ICANN, the body that oversees internet namespaces such as .com/.net/.org etc in co-operation with various Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) in attempt to increase accuracy of data supplied in domain Whois records (see "What is a domain Whois record" below)

In this stage of the program what is required is that at certain specific points in a domain name's like cycle, domain registrants must complete an action that attests to the accuracy of the data supplied in the Registrant data supplied.
Key domain lifecycle points or events that trigger the WAP are:

Registration, renewal or transfer of a domain name using a new (previously unverified) contact data.
Modification of a domain's Whois record to new values that are not previously verified.
If an administrative email such as a renewal notice, or a Whois Data Reminder Policy (WDRP) bounces or is otherwise undeliverable.

In any of these case, a Whois Accuracy Program process is initialized which takes the form of sending emails to the Registrant (yes, this can mean sending this notice to the same address that bounced and started this process in the first place), requesting them to verify their Whois data:

This normally takes the form of visiting a web page that displays the current Registrant data for a domain, and clicking on a button that asserts that the information is true and accurate:

whois_verification

The initialization of this process commences a time limited process (we refer to this process internally as the "Domain DOOMSDAY CLOCK", which is 15 days in length.

YOUR DOMAIN WILL CEASE FUNCTIONING IF YOU FAIL TO CONFIRM YOUR DATA
If the Whois data remains unverified after 15 days, the Registrar must suspend the domain, causing it to cease resolving over the internet, until such time as it can verified.

THIS IS NOT A SICK JOKE
This is a real policy, enacted by ICANN, which binds all domain registrars accredited unto the 2013 RAA. Many Registrars are already operating under it, and there are already numerous horror stories in which high profile, super busy domains have been shut off and ceased operating because of failure to comply with this policy.

IT IS IMPORTANT FOR ALL EASYDNS MEMBERS TO BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING:
After June 23, 2015 whenever one of your domains hits an event outlined above, you will be receiving an email notice from us asking you to "Click this link to verify your Whois data". Even though it looks like an obvious phishing attempt, it isn't.

THANK ICANN
You can thank ICANN for this policy, we because if it were up to us, and you tasked us with coming up with the most idiotic, damaging, phish-friendy, disaster prone policy that accomplishes less than nothing and is utterly pointless, I question whether we would have been able to pull it off at this level. We're simply out of our league here.
Follow Up Questions:
What is a domain's Whois Record?
You may not be aware of this but every time you register a domain name your registration details (name, address, email, phone, fax) must  be entered in the relevant registries "Whois Database", which is a publicly accessible database and those details are visible by anybody.

For examples see http://www.easywhois.com which is our web based gateway to any whois database in the world.
What if I use Whois Privacy / MyPrivacy For my Domain Records?

If you use Whois Privacy, you will still have to confirm your underlying Registrant data – even though your public Whois records will be those of the privacy proxy.

Feature Request: SC freezes the on-screen display as soon as it is invoked, allowing the user to take their time to frame the section clip.

I am putting this in as a feature request as I can't see how to get SC to do this using the existing settings.
(See the emboldened/italicised bits in the cross-post, below.)

Re: NoteFrog Pro (clipboard information manager) - Mini-Review

I have already sent Berry 2 test reports and have just now sent him a third - the latter about what I have termed "the Systray problem".
The symptoms are that sometimes, after being minimised/closed to the Systray, NF disappears from the Systray, though the process appears to continue.
The collage of screenshots below is intended to explain it, and what I could find out about it.

NoteFrog - v3.0.0507 not in Systray but still active process - Copy 01.png

I am providing the screenshot not so much as to describe an apparent error/bug, but rather to demonstrate how useful Screenshot Captor can be in problem analysis cases like this - where "a picture is worth a thousand words".
The picture is comprised of a sort of collage of different screenshot bits, starting with the first - which was of the Task Bar and Process Hacker window (which were side-by-side) - and then overlaying other screenshot clips and adding a text box and arrows, and expanding the canvas in SC (Objects-->Expand canvas to fit objects).
I'm sure I could have made it look nicer, if I took the time, but the thing is it would have been difficult for me to do this without using SC. SC really is a superbly crafted and useful tool for such purposes.

The only constraint in using SC in this case seems to be in taking any screenshot of an area of the screen which contains a system pop-out window - and there were 2 such instances in this case. SC couldn't take such a clip without closing the pop-out window first, every time I tried it. The Windows Snipping Tool and the ABBYY Screenshot Reader weren't any better, but the OneNote Screen Clipping tool did the job just right as it freezes the on-screen display as soon as it is invoked, allowing the user to take their time to frame the section clip.

I shall cross-post this in the SC discussion forum, as a request to add similar functionality to SC.

If the terms "Jet Set Willy" or "Manic Miner" or "Jetpac" are familiar to you, you probably remember a home computer from the 1980s called the Sinclair Spectrum. It was designed and made in Britain, but also popular around the world. Many of its most popular games became classics, and it's now possible to play many of them on your PC via an emulator. You'll need to be using the Chrome browser to try this. Assuming that you are, head to https://chrome.googl...ccy-portable/jfkpejk... to download the Unreal Speccy Portable add-on, which includes the Spectrum emulator and a load of ready-to-play games. Note that the installer will probably put an icon on your desktop, from which you can launch the emulator. In my own tests, there was no obvious way to start it from within the browser itself.

Summary: Go play it - Wizard101.

Description of why:
My now 13 ½yo daughter and one of her friends have been playing the online game Wizard101 ($FREE) for a year or more, and they introduced it to my now 4½yo when he had turned 4, since which time he has proceeded to develop and train 6 wizards in his account (6 is the max no. of wizards allowed in an account) from 6 different magical "schools" - there are 7 schools in all. Wizard 101 seems t be loosely-based on the model of "wizard school" as set out in the Harry Potter stories.
My son has brought up his wizards from where they started at Level 1, to now Levels 14 to 20 (levels go up to a hundred, but you probably would have to become a paying member for that. On the way to getting to this point, he has developed and later deleted some wizards where he made mistakes or choices in their development and where he wanted to see if he could do better or differently by starting them afresh, or trying another school.

Not only is the game fun to play, but it is rather complex, and if the player wants to aim for optimum development and duelling skills (against other wizards and against baddies) of any given wizard, then the playing choices are confusingly multi-faceted and interwoven/interdependent to some extent. I started playing the game with him, helping him along, and by the time I had rather lost interest in it, he had started to become proficient, and he has now gone on to discover things about the game that I had not known of or understood, and I would say that he now understands the game well and in many instances better than I do. The thing that I reckoned would hold him back was his inability to read. Though there are audio tracks where people artefacts in the game give hints and "Quests" for players to undertake (the audio being presented at the same time as text), there are large chunks of the game that necessitate reading skills and numerical comparison of things like health points, mana, spell strengths, etc.

To my great surprise, he has done what I have read about children doing - they memorise the pattern of a word or phrase, and can tell you what it "says", without being able to properly read - so his memory skills are being developed. Furthermore, his numerical comparison and reasoning skills have been raised so that he can cope on his own and no longer needs my help in playing, except in some of the most complicated tasks around arranging an optimum mix for a wizard's skills, powers and magical equipment (redolent of the old RPG approach, but done in a GUI).

The above just scratches the surface of Wizard101. Non-paying members find that they are stuck in the main, initial realm, and unable to proceed to play the game in some specific certain places in that realm, until they start to pay $ to join up. However, apart from this limitation, the game is not crippled and can continue to be played for free in the initial realm, discovering new parts that open up to a wizard as he/she ascends the skill levels.

Wizards have finite max. stores of health points and mana points. As the wizard develops, the max levels increase, and can be further augmented/increased by using appropriate magical paraphernalia. Health and mana need to be recharged after they have been reduced in the game (in using magic and in undertaking magic duels), and there are floating "wisps" that wizards can bump into to get a small recharge.
To get from A to B - and there's a lot of that to be done (maps help to teach you the lie of the land) - Wizards can either walk/run, or travel on a "mount" (e.g., including flying broomsticks and flying dragons). After they get to a certain level, they can also "teleport" from one place to another, which uses up a small amount of mana each time.
If a $FREE-playing wizard has made a "friend" of a wizard on a $PAID account in a higher level, then the first wizard can teleport to their friend - whether the latter is in the same realm, or in his castle, or in a different realm - to play, and at no cost. Very shrewd of the game developers to offer "sampling" like that.

All in all, Wizard 101 seems to be a superb game, and one that I would highly recommend - for game adepts and for children of 4yo and over, alike. It would be great fun for the former, and almost certainly developmental for the latter - and possibly for their parents too!    :D

Whilst experimenting with setting the grave key as the FARR toggle, per this discussion: Difficulty with launching FARR when using ` key + focus on desktop., I had to play about with the Hotkey settings menu.
Some of those settings are preset (fixed) in FARR with relevant fields being uneditable, but the user doesn't get to find that out until they open one (right-click to edit) and see the warning message in red. That's really a bit late to find out - and if the user comes back later to edit one, and can't recall whether it was preset, they have to open it up to find out first.

Suggestion: Could these "preset" Hotkey options be flagged with (say) a red asterisk and a common warning message where they are listed in the Options - Hotkeys window? That would save the user having to open it up to find out first.
I typically have 6 or 7options and don't recall offhand exactly which ones are definitely preset.

Thanks
