Find And Run Robot / Public release ? Next Update ?

Hi Mouser,

i really think you should release FARR as soon as possible, it's no big deal not having all the material for the public release... (screencasts and all...) well at least in MHO

FARR topic seems kind of dead... i keep reporting bugs with no feedback... there is no update since mid august, that's 2 months !

FARR webpage always states that :
Public Release Will Happen in
JULY AUGUST 2007

anyone discovering donationcoder now would think FARR is a dormant project, i'm sure you are putting many efforts into the project, but we just don't see it like we did few months ago...

there is no doubt in my mind that FARR is the most advanced launcher (for windows), and your more important software project...
i also believe that the current version is not the 2.00.142, please share it with us, so that we can report back to you.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, i know it's hard for you to let FARR go public, you said it...
BUT it's time to make a choice :

• you release it
  
• you work on FARR like you did few months ago : frequent updates

only the first line break (\n) works ...

PS: i'm still hoping for a enhanced showmemo command

Hi mouser,

i think it would be great to (re)use CHS formatting capabilities...

could you make a command-line utility using CHS formatting capabilities to format the clipboard content (using .format files)

like so, for example :
CHSformat.exe myspecialformatting.format

i think it would be great in conjunction with FARR (using an alias or searching batch files) or with any other launcher by the way...

I don't know if it has already been done

anyone aware of such tools ?

i noticed a new bug concerning the aliases

in a read-only alias file, you just can't see aliases

if you want to see an alias (by double-clicking it) it says you can't add or delete a read only alias

Find And Run Robot / tiny display annoyance in 2.00.140 and other comments

Great to see a new release is out !

so using 2.00.140, i noticed (is it new ?) that when you invoke FARR you can briefly see the previous search in the search box.

Fixed error where you were unable to delete user aliases and instead got an error about them being readonly.

that's great, i will be able to clean up my aliases a little !

Added a slight delay when triggering hotkey with the copytext option, to give more time for the copy to work.

could you make this delay an option (even through a file) i noticed quite a difference...
it's no big deal for me since now i use autohotkey before invoking FARR (when i'm using FARR with aliases)
this little peace of ahk code works wonders :

SendPlay ^c
ClipWait, 1

there is no delay per se, since clipwait ends when it detects clipboard content
(could you do something similar ?)

the paste command is really nice...

for example you can create the bbcode alias (just call the alias bbcode, no regex...)
with the following result :

handy :

Farr just crashed many times...(FARR not responding, skin gone, cpu 100%, have to kill it) i don't really know why
i just discovered that $$c was my clipboard content....

and i use $cc a lot in my aliases maybe there is an infinite loop

unfortunately i can't reproduce it everytime
sorry i'm not precise enough

Hi all,

is there a way to search in two (or more) startup folders (Me and All users...) using a dosearch command ?

i can search in mine like so :
dosearch C:\Documents and Settings\Nico\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\. $$1

and in all users :
dosearch C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\. $$1

but is there a way to combine those two dosearch into one ?

i'm sure there is a trick but i did not find anything ...

PS: the goal is to relaunch a startup app (a bit like Skrommel's ReRun but for only one app...)

Hi all,

i'd like to be able to copy the selected file in the result list to the clipboard the way explorer do...
that means that i could later copy the file in any explorer...

i found a utility called ezclip but it does not work all the time... (well for me it works 1 out of 10 )

do you know any command line utility to do that ?
is it doable with autohotkey or vbs ?

@mouser, i think this also could be a feature request... could be a nice addition

THAT is when mouser's too clever +action modifier does not come in the way  (please fix please fix)

you can make a divider in an alias results list like so :

__________________ | C:\DoNothing.exe /STAYOPEN /ICON=icons\noicon.ico

i attached the DoNothing.exe file which does NOTHING 

this file + /STAYOPEN makes FARR stay open and do nothing in case you inadvertently choose this result
for the icon i specify a non-existent icon which produces nothing...

@mouser, maybe this could/should be improved, so that we could have nicer dividers ? (maybe moving result numbers, etc.)

Hi Mouser,

I think it would be great to be able to Run multiple commands in one alias result, few possibilities come to my mind...
(i know you can Run all results of an alias ... but it's a totally different story... i never used it)

1) launching multiple websites (just 3-4 not an entire alias' result list...)
2) opening a webpage in all your different browsers (for webdesigners)
3) launching multiple programs (morning startup)

once again i know you can approach that using alias and the launch all command but not as conveniently....

and now the killer possibility 
4) Run a command + playing a sound + showing an OSD message... NOW that would be fun !
that would be great for many many things and would make FARR sexier

I don't know if it's hard to do but i'm sure it would be really handy ...
of course, one could encapsulate few commands into an autohotkeyscript or a batch file
but that would be so much easier right into FARR

you could ship FARR

• with a nice OSD message program like AbteriX's MessaBox
  
• a small wav/mp3 player...

That would rock !

Hi, i got this idea while using FARR...

i needed few colored icons (just colored squares...)
and i thought it would be cool to have an .exe just to do that (i already did something similar in PHP)

it would be very simple, parameter would be the color and maybe the style of the icon (rounded, square, star, etc.)

DynamicColoredIcon.exe "#ffcc00"

@mouser i wonder if it would work with the \ICON modifier of FARR ?

... my idea is maybe just plain stupid

just to make sure, you are not forgetting some bugs/annoyances (before the release day, i hope...)

1) the +action trick TOO clever https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=9161.0

i think the +action trick is trying to be clever and detect that there is only one result, and so it should show you text about the action.  that's normally what you want, so that you can see what action will be applied to what file.

as i suggested the +action trick when used with dosearch command is way to clever it shoud just be fired when asked !

• $$c is empty if the clipboard content is too big
  
• "restartsearch $$c" command crashes FARR when the clipboard content is too big (above 1024  characters ?)

3)since the 2.00.130 release and the new result display updating, there is no more flickering but the search box is not responsive as before...
it really really should be an option

in anycase the search box should feel completely free

for example when i use one of my (dosearch) alias which searches music on my network drive, it takes literally 10 seconds before i see the search terms i typed after the alias trigger... let's say my alias is triggered by music, if a type "music madonna"
i see music, then FARR stops for 10 seconds (i know it's working but it feels like it just crashed) then madonna comes up then the search ends (an other 10 seconds later)

i really (only?) notice it when using dosearch aliases

I also wanted to say that i'm really getting anxious waiting for the next release of FARR, i got used to get one every few days...

Hi mouser

i noticed that the clipboard is stripped when too big
this is bad 

i use it all the time in my aliases (as you know)
lastly to resize pictures thanks to imagemagick command-line utility
and when i pass the path of say 50 images it does not work anymore

PLEASE remove the limit, i know it has been 128 characters in the past, you increased it ...good
but please remove the limit (or make an option for us to configure...)

i also noticed a bug that crashes FARR
the "restartsearch $$c" command crashes FARR when the clipboard content is too big (above 1024  characters ?)

I really really believe increasing the $$c capacity is a MUST, since people will use it to save snippets, manipulate file paths, etc.

some requests :
it would be great to be able to specify a text file :

it would allow for quick and dirty note management...with a few scripts... (and would be easy to share, i know a plugin is coming)

even better :
it would be GREAT to be able to specify a URL !

and so on....

one could have a startpage with a nice presentation of his favorites

Hi mouser, i'd like to suggest a small feature but which would be very useful for some complex alias

i have an alias to search my music, since all my music is organized in folders, i only search folder, then i can play it or enqueue it to winamp thanks to the action keyword "open_winamp" :

Music album search $$1 | dosearch -alias +folder_music +open_winamp +\ $$1

see capture when i search music (m + keyword) : m mar


when i select a result, i get the action keyword triggered, i then have to choose between the different action

what i'd like to do is Play my selected folder, keep FARR opened (thanks to /stayopen) THEN go back to the result list (to be able to enqueue further albums...)

how could we do it ? i thought through a restartsearch command.... (see capture)
maybe restartsearch $$searchbox

the thing is, the result list (all the albums) must be still there (i guess), so we don't want to really RESTART the search, since it could take a few seconds (even more on a network drive)

i think it'd be great if we could have a new keyword modifier to switch from small icons display to big icons display

for instance :
when you have an alias with few results (let's say the windows management alias of jgpaiva)

you could set up a "super" alias using a dosearch command :
dosearch WindowManagement +showbigicons

or for a alias with lots of results (let's say one that finds mp3...)
dosearch +folder_mp3 +open_in_winamp +mp3... +showsmallicons

i would be very nice ! and makes FARR even sexier

i wanted to share a trick with the community 

the following "clipboard" alias :

will "paste" the clipboard content to the search box (I know you can Ctrl+V to paste the clipboard content )

sounds dumb ... but it is in fact really handy when used in conjunction with aliases with powerful regex masks :

for instance this one which recognize urls...

you can have one that recognize email, telephone, etc.

now let's say you choose the "auto copy selected text to clipboard on trigger" option in the general tab of FARR

you can just select a url (for instance) ... open FARR ... find the "clipboard" alias press enter then the url alias is triggered 
my "url" alias offers me different things : open the url in my default browser, in firefox, in opera, save the url to my delicious account and more to come...

if you assign an hotkey to this "clipboard alias" :

• you select some text (url, email, etc.)
  
• press the hotkey
  
• press enter (to bad we can't skip that step)
  
• one of your aliases with powerful regex masks is triggered

hope it gives you some ideas

You can start FARR with some commandline options for advanced usage:

• -standalone = start FARR visible and in taskbar, and exit on close of window
  
• -search "search string" = start FARR visible (or bring up any running copy) and start a search
  
• -show = start FARR visible (or bring up any running copy)
  
• -exit = exit any running copy of FARR.

This is great new feature !
i personnaly use it with autohotkey
i set up an hotkey to copy text or files path (when in my explorer) and open FARR with a search string ...

Hi Mouser,

i wanted to code an autohotkey script to open some kind of preview window for my "FARR code snippet manager" 

i tought i would use the status bar text to get the file names...
i tought i could also check the search box text to trigger the preview script to work only when i'm using my snippet alias...

BUT i have the impression i can't get anything... ControlGetText, etc. does not work ...
i have no idea about windows classes, controls, etc. so i may very well be out of the subjet but do you have any ideas to get some info ?

If i could code some C++, i would (not enough time to learn) try to code a plugin, but i thought i could code a tiny script with autohotkey to get the job done...

if the control you use are invisible, could you add a "standard control" with hidden texts of the search box, status bar, etc.
I'm highly speculating here, so bear with me !
