kartal, I've never had to set up a VPN myself. I've never had to use one, either, so your information on this topic far surpasses my own.

Looks like you are either going to have to buy something or program your own. No wonder the PowerFolder guys started charging for their app. There's evidently nothing else like it.

Yes Powerfolder is very nice, I have been using it for long time(since it was opensource).

I do not have any problem with people charging for their efforts, good for them. But I have this distaste for crippled trialware. It is waste of time, what is the frigging point of offering someone to try a version that is crippled? I mean if their code is so precious they should keep it for themselves, it should not be even on the market. I just hate it when developers offer trial version that lacks the most important features, I wonder that is the real genius behind such hesitant behaviour.

That is the main reason I do not want to go PF commercial version, I am not going to buy something without trying it fully. The cash amount is not the problem but the thing is that I am trying to build a real, flexible pipeline. I would hate to see if it breaks apart after buying it.

Innuendo, actually encryption and big brother is no my main problems. the free version of Powerfolder has 3 folders-10 gb limit.

Althou your suggestion sounds interesting if it is something doable I would definetely use it. I use Vpn(client side) with my client but I never setup any vpn server-tunneling stuff myself.Is it hard to do?

app103, I need to make sure most of my folders are in sync. They are quite big from 10gb to 100 gb. The second reason I would not use dropbox or similar solutions is that it is an overkill to use online services to sync some files. My last reason for not using them is because I do not like online services, just a personal taste problem.

I just tried using "rmdir" inside my script, I could not get it to work. I think it is because Popen does not pass rmdir as a command. Since I do not use it myself I wont dwell around it much really.

edit: I fixed the issue, it was a shell issue. Here is the windows version but it does not have any verbose mode.

Why depend on an external tool instead of coding the removal routine in Python? And when using an external tool, why depend on gnu rm instead of Windows' built-in RMDIR /S ?

Well because it was easier to just use Gnu tool rather than trying to write my own recursive Python folder deletetion. I was just trying to get something going asap.

I just like the Gnu rm`s options and I use other Gnu Core Utils here as well, so it was just a personal taste.

I will just make one version with RMDIR instead later today.

Hi

This tiny Python script utility is using Gnu rm.exe to forcefully and peacefully removes folders. I think it works better than windows delete. It will popup a window where you put the path to intended delete folder. For now it does only one folder(recursively) at a time. I made this utility because I was sick of waiting for Window`s delete to figure out what to delete.

Use it on your own risk. I use it here happily :)

kartal, the method I have always used was RemotelyAnywhere & that's the only advice I could impart, but it's commercial software & it'd be way overkill for what you want to do.

Is it like charged up VNC? I have never used it really.

kartal, Thanks for the feedback.

Not sure what the firefox issue is. When I drag text from firefox to a folder in the toolbar dock, it creates a new snippet fine. I just need to type a description and save.
-David

David, that issue was happening with the main window. The snippet bar seems fine, it is just not my way of dealing with collecting information.

Another solution could be a dropbox instead of large side bar or customizable global shortcut support(windows key) for toggling the snippet bar.

I am really happy to hear about new stuff you are working on, definetely they will add great value.

Btw I did not have time to check out the folder structure. Is it saving files in flat files in folders? That would be great because it would make it easy to exchange between other applications.

Kartal, I'd suggest the last freeware version of PowerFolder (PowerFolder Basic), but I just found out that it doesn't have the encryption features that one can only get from the commercial Pro version.

Which is what I use at the moment.

Thank you all for the suggestions. As usual I am looking for solutions that have been used and tested by DC members :) I appreciate that some of you were trying to find a solution but the thing is that suggesting application names does not cut it for me. I need a proven used method so that I can also bug you about how you set it up, like Eóin`s setup. The reason I do ask for opinion here is that I need proven methods. None of us has hundreds of free hours to jump from test to test, trial to trial.

Trust me I have exploited all the solutions everyone mentioned  here and more over the years except Eóin`s solution which I have not done due to central repository aspect as 4wd mentioned. But it looks like that is one of the viable methods that can be a good alternative to Powerfolder solution.

I actually wanted to try out the latest commercial version of Powerfolder yesterday  but I just saw that it is a crippled trialware which I hate personally, again I gave up on that one due to this silly desicion made by the developers. What is the frigging point of offering a crippled trialware that is not much diffferent than the last free version really? That is plain sillyness in my view.

So far solutions

-Install ftp servers on all computers and use ftp syncing. I use Syncback for my local network stuff and it does a superior job.

-Try Powerfolder and deal with retarded crippled trialware

-Go with svn-git server setup

-try hamachi one more time( It does not work in my network, it could not even assign ip to itself). I probably wont use this one mainly because their help files were no helpful and I already wasted over 4 hours on it

-I want to try WASTE again, but the documentation is sparse. I am not sure if the problem was my setup or it was WASTE-router issues. It sure did not work in my internal network. Maybe someone can give me a lead on this one

-Dc++, again it did not work on my local network, it sounds retarded that I need to open router ports use it on my local network. Tried, no success

-I did use Groove in the past(before MS bought it) as a small team management. Has anyone tested it. I think it is a good alternative since it lets you sync individual  folders unlike Collaber and Collanos.

When you say snapping, you mean the docking? when you hit the close button, it doesn't exit. It can be brought back from the system tray.

You can also try unpinning it and it will autohide.

Hope that helps.

-Dave

Dave, I personally am not big fan of docking apps but I am sure there are many who would prefer it due to convenience. So I closed it and tried to use it without the docking bar. But it seems like the main window is not handling the drag and drops the way the side bar was handling.  The other thing is that everytime I dd from FF it keeps asking me to specify a target. The thing is that I have been already dropping on target on the docking bar.

I guess I am not used to the way your application has been designed. So I just keep hitting certain walls here.

It is a very nice app but I will pass on this one. Here are my reasons

-No dark themes(text, highlighting, background)
-Drag and drop support is mainly supported for the docking bar.
-no search highlighting (searched words)

I'm still not sure whether the printer you want to print to is connected to a Win or Linux machine but if you can see the printer as, eg. 'Canon BJ200 on Kartal6' then you should be able to pool the printers.

I did check out the pooling solution, that looks like multiple printing. My problem is not multiple printing, my problem is that I do not have "drivers" for the xp64 computer
which is my main tool because Canon does not make drivers for xp64 for that particular printer. I am trying to compensate for lack of drivers by printing docs to PDF----->to the real printer. As I said this is already possible and I have been using it for 4 years already. I am trying to find another solution.

If you share printers across the network you need printer drivers, in general one might not see that is happening because as long as the client computers are same os the driver is not an issue. And that has been my main problem because one of my machines is xp64 and that xp64 computer cannot access the shared printer on a windows computer because of the lack of the driver. One might think that when you are using a network printer you would not need such thing but you do.

Otherwise, you could set your PDF printer to always save to the same directory and then use a simple(?) AutoIt(Hk) script to watch for any new PDFs and send them onto the machine with the printer by either having the print machine watch a directory, print then delete anything that appears or by injecting into it's print queue directly.

And that is something I have already mentioned. I just am not that experienced with Ahk and do not know much about Autoit. I know python but WIn32 automation is not something I have done at all but I will check it out, so I will probably do it in Python.

4wd, I am  not sure what multiple pooling does, I will give a try.

Let me articulate what my main problem better and what my solution to that problem was before.

I cannot use any of my canon printers(directly connected or over the network) on xp64 because Canon does not provide drivers for xp64 for that particular model. So I either install a linux server that can provide http printing which does not require printer drivers from the client(I did it with ubuntu) or use a non hardware printer(ie pdf) that can than print to a hardware printer so that my xp64 machine would print to pdf server on my coputer that has printer attached. Then the pdf server would print the pdf and submit this printed pdf to to the selected or default printer. I did use this solution with pdfcreator but I do not want to use it anymore due to the reason I mentioned above.

One other solution is to print to a specific shared folder and use another folder watching application to submit these newly printed pdf files to an actual printer. I did try this before and it is cumbersome. I tried it with logmonitor and powerpro. There was another application just for this purpose but i think it was expensive for me at that time.

If I cannot find a software I will probably write a python app but it wont be as elaborate as those finished softwares

You could use a distributed versioning system? Probably serious overkill, but free.

Yeah I was thinking to use Tortoise(with server setup). I have not tried Git stuff, do you think it is easier to setup(server and client?)

I used tortoise for my projects before but it was only one client no server, I did use for plain file versioning and it was great.

How about PrintConductor?
Also, check out http://www.noliturbare.com/index.php for a few print tools.

I am not sure what printconductor can do because it seems like it is useless without universal convertor which seems to be sold for 69$. I am laso not sure how this could be usefuil for me. I need an automated solution and this does not look automated to me? I am going to print files on another computer? As long as I need to interact with other computer I can just print them to a shared folder and print them manually :)

I have not seen anything that is useful for me on http://www.noliturbare.com

thanks for suggestions though :)

Even PowerFolder relies on online storage to achieve its functions. The only difference is you are using their servers instead of your own FTP server or a webDAV-type account.

It seems that in this corner of the software market the simpler and more intuitive you wish it to be the more you are going to have to pay. I've searched pretty extensively over the last couple days. What you want, with the ease of use you want, coupled with what you want to pay does not appear to exist.

Actually Powerfolder does not rely on online service to share and sync data. PF can connect to peers either on the network or over the internet. Online storage is just one of the options they offer. The powerfolder servers might get involved if the handshaking between peers has been unsuccessful. That i think works much like p2p servers which Pf wolders just provide routing of the client ip, rest is done PF client to client.

To me pay is not the real issue until certain amount. I was just looking for a free option if it exists, if it does not I will see what I can pay for.

Thank you for searches and suggestions. I was just wondering if anyone on DC forum successfully has used file sharing the way I wanted.

Ok I just put this one together. It works as long as there is only one previous window open. I use Vim as my primary text editor. Maybe someone with better ahk knowledge can help me out here

Edit: here is a better version

If WinActive ahk_class MozillaUIWindowClass
{
   ^!c::
      {
      Send, {CTRLDOWN}c{CTRLUP}
      Sleep, 100
      Run "E:\programs\Vim\vim72\gvim.exe"
      WinWait, [No Name] - GVIM,,2
      WinActivate
      Sleep, 100
      Send, {CTRLDOWN}v{CTRLUP}
   }
return
}
}

I just want to be able to select some text and see them in my favorite editor. There are tools to see the source code of selected text and even there are addons that would let you edit text entry area in an external editor. These are not what I am looking for. What I am looking for is an addon that would let me see the selected text in an external editor pretty much just for reading purposes, just simple text.

I probably will write a simple Python or Ahk hack if I cannot find one.

From the homepage, kartal:

One synchronization software provides all these solutions

    * Sync data between your desktop PC and laptop (notebook).
    * Replicate and back-up data between your home and office computers.
    * Synchronize more than two directories.
    * Update and back-up files over a local network or the Internet.

Innuendo, you need to set up an ftp server on both sides to use this thing considering that one of my comps is a netbook, I hesitate choosing ftp server as a solution. I already use Syncback and it has superior ftp sync. Sorry I did not articulate my point enough. If I have to choose the ftp path I can always use http://www.webdrive.com/ or some other free alternatives. As I mentioned I am looking for more intuitive solution.

On the otherhand I am not sure if there is a way to encrypt the data on the ftp server or during the trasnsfer that is another reason why I do not want ftp solution.

It also offers amazon etc stuff but those would cost me more than I would pay for software solutions.

Gotcha. Bullzip doesn't do it automatically. But since I let it auto open the PDF it created just to be sure it looks ok - all I need to do is hit <Alt-P> <Enter> to print, immediately followed by an <Alt-F4> to close Bullzip, so it's not too a big a deal for me.

I also seldom need to print the entire PDFs I've created at one time, so in a way, not going directly to the printer is a plus for me. ;D But I can see where autoprint would be a nice feature to have.

I've just sent a suggestion over to the authors asking them to add "Print to Default Printer" to their list of available post processing options. :Thmbsup:

As I said my main intention is not to print pdf files. The reason I need this is that Canon does not provide printer drivers(xp64) for my printer so only way is to print them is using a pdf printer on my other machine. I have done this before(Pdf creator can do it) but I was so disgusted by the behaviour of the Pdfcreator`s author(sneaky toolbar installation) that i stopped using it pretty much.

This is what I currently use. :)

I use that one too but the thing is that it does not let you print to an actual printer after the pdf file is saved.

I am not trying to just print a pdf file. I need this pdf printer to print files(canon laser printer) after pdf creation.

Hi

I need a simple free pdf server to print stuff from my xp64. I was using pdfcreator in the past but because of the author`s sneaky embedding of toolsbars, I have stopped using it. Are there any other alternatives out there? Basically what I need is pdf printer that can print to another real printer after saving it as pdf. No online related solutions please.

thanks

General Software Discussion / looking for a simple firewall app
« on: June 13, 2009, 10:46 PM »
I have tried many firewall software paid and free. Most of them are humongous system resource eaters. I hate them. Some of them offer very little.

Here is what I want

-Small
-It will show me which programs are active, which ports are being used. It will let me restrict access to ports and resources.
-It would let me specify which ip adress should do what(ie controlling internet sharing)
-It needs to be small
-I do not want security suits, just firewall
-I do not want obsessive hidden firewall behaviour that would drive me nuts here(ie Zonealarm)

thanks

Lashiec, thanks for another suggestion. I actually tried that one as well. It ddid not work within my local network so I did not bother to try outside. Most of these apps rely on opening some ports on the router which I am hesitant mainyl because one port only could be directed to one computer at a time(forwarding and I am sure it is possible to multiple port computer tricks. I just do not want to get too complicated with this stuff. I need a flexible system. It looks like PowerFolder is way more superior to any of the systems I know of.
