General Software Discussion / Looking for LetmeType alike
« on: May 08, 2009, 10:05 PM »
Hi

I love LetmeType is awesome but the only problem is that it does not have export feature. I was wondering if there are any apps that gets close to LMT as far as learning and efficiency skills go. I tried Phrase Express but I did not think that it was learning anything at all. It is ok for predefined stuff but LMT just rocks all the way up.

Any suggestions? (freeware, shareware...)

Find And Run Robot / dosearch only shows the first line
« on: May 07, 2009, 10:38 PM »
Hi

I have setup an alias that shows other aliases, kind of like grouping them. So I am using do search to make searches based names of other aliases.

This is the kind of structure I have

searchword
(no regex)
dosearch searchpic
dosearch search music

The problem is that Farr only shows me the first line. I have like 8 lines none of them are showing up in the list except 1st one when I invoke "searchword"

LaunchBar Commander / Couple suggestions
« on: May 03, 2009, 10:09 PM »
Hi

This is a great application, I never knew this one before. Here are the things I am missing at the moment

-There should be a tray icon at all times(I was using default launcher)
-Stay on top does not work all the time(I am using vertical orientation without docking)
-I know mouser said there is a sound setting per item but I am not seeing any under "menu, submenu group" under settings (I was using default launcher)
-It would be great if ther user could access the launcher while the preferences is open because there is no way to test the settings without closing pref.

Hi

I guess today is my wanting day. :) I am looking for a general purpose text editor that relies mostly on coloring text to improve readability and usability. I will be using for browsing text or code. What I am looking for is not code highlighting though(might be part of he deal ). I want this editor to be able to recognize indents, tabs, groups, occuring sentences, words, grammar rules etc and color them either randomly or based on predefined rules. For example one paragraph could be orange the next one would be dark blue etc.

Once I improve my coding I will write one myself but I need one right now :)

General Software Discussion / Taskbar grouper?
« on: April 25, 2009, 07:02 PM »
Hi

Does anyone know of any software that would let me group open windows on taskbar by date, time, name, application, size etc? I know there are bunch of taskbar maintain-shuffle kind of stuff but I use alot of windows and they are kind of useless for me since grouping and regrouping takes time. I use taskix at the moment which is ok but no grouping is provided. I also hate windows taskbar group way.

thanks

Hi

I am using groupbar and I like it but it is kind of outdated. Does anyone know anything similar to this Groupbar from Microsoft?

Living Room / Best programming books ?
« on: April 24, 2009, 12:44 AM »
Hey Guys-Gals-Furries

I am trying to compile a list of good programming books(that I can also check out from local library :) I am looking for not too advanced stuff somewhere between beginner-intermediate level. I saw some forum entries but not very spesific to snappy programming books. Bear in mind though I am not a programmer, just a hobbiest, but I have done some programming when I was very young like around 14 with Turbo Pascal (on 8086-80286), but that was a long time ago. Anyways I am trying to get back to programming. I am kind of sick of hacking stuff :)

Here are couple I am enjoying at the moment

-"Core Python Programming" by Wesley J. Chun. I love the way he writes and explains. He goes high and low without loosing any rythm.
-"Algorithms" by Teach Yourself. It is a nice and cute book. It explains various algorithms with pseudo codes. I kind of like it.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Is import-export aliases broken?
« on: April 20, 2009, 09:52 PM »
Hi

I am having weird times with import export alias stuff in the latest release. Is it working properly in your setup? I copy and paste an alias but the whole thing is added to the intended section. I do not remember that this is how it worked before?

Hi

I want to set an alias that would look for search words(files) in folders that are not in "search folders" list. Is it possible?

I was looking for a simple calculator that can do binary calculations. This one turns out to be very simple and feature rich. I know there are alot of advance calculators out there but none looked like binary centric.

Btw it supports basic argument passing so you can pass arguments to this .exe easily. I will make an alias for Farr.

http://bincalc.googlepages.com/
"
Megatops BinCalc is a pure Int32 calculator designed for developers. It provides you a effective way to perform binary calculations or making base conversions.

BinCalc is FREE, and it looks very different to the other calculators. When I was staring the BinCalc project, I just want to design a UI cool enough to scare the binary "muggles" and avoid them touching it -- it is only for developers.

I know this has nothing to do with the plugins themselves because they were working fine. I just restarted and Farr does not want to work as long as I have the calendar and the alttab plugins are installed. I guess something is corrupted in the  windows installation that it is creating this mess here. I tried reinstalling microsoft c++ distributions but that did not resolve anything for me. Is there anything else I can do to make Farr working again with these plugins? These are the 2 I was using mainly really as far as plugin use goes.

Developer's Corner / Python newbie question
« on: April 13, 2009, 10:53 PM »
Hi Guys

I am working on my own alarm, countdown application. I do not have a gui setup now( will use wxpython). However I need a way to be able to print current time in a window(or command line) without printing every second in a new line. I can query time module to get the current time but I want to be able to print in a simple seperate window and terminate the window or time counting when the time is up. I have figured out the rest except printing time. This is for only testing the application not for final version. Currently I am using rudimentarty print command which prints the time on ever new line which is unpleasant.

thanks

Living Room / Cheap wireless calling plans in the States?
« on: April 08, 2009, 07:26 PM »
Hi guys I am thinking to change my wireless calling-data plan, I definetely want a cheaper economy plan. At the moment I am using Att-palm data plan which cost me 67$ a month which is becoming too expensive for me. Does anyone know of any cheaper plan (from different carrier maybe)? I do not need to have a full data plan though, a simple email checking, 10-20 mb monthly would be more than enough from now on. I do not care about unlimited calling. I guess I do not even use my phone more than an hour a month.

General Software Discussion / Firewall+Proxy?
« on: March 31, 2009, 10:08 PM »
Hi

I am looking for somewhat light firewall+proxy solution that I can install on my laptop. But I would like to use ti as proxy to so all the oher computers will go online through this laptop. I can use windows internet sharing but the problem is that that thing resets the ip adress which I hate. I like to use custom ip adresses for my computers. At the moment I have privoxy running on that laptop but I am looking for more robust-secure firewall+proxy solution together.

thanks

Post New Requests Here / file name randomizer
« on: March 30, 2009, 07:08 PM »
Once in a while I need to name my files with totally random characters. It might be beneficial to have a file name randomizer. The way I imagine is that the user select bunch of files and the randomizer would name the selected files with very random characters.

One another version of this software also could add random suffixes or prefixes.

I am looking for a solution that would work via right click in windows shell.

« on: March 17, 2009, 07:25 PM »

General Software Discussion / Bookmarks, I am frustrated
« on: March 16, 2009, 09:47 PM »
Hi guys

I have been looking for a decent shared bookmarking and web scraping solutions for a while. I have checked out scrapbook, webresearch, linkman etc. None of them does what I want. What I want is an application that

-can save webpages
-does not use proprierty format
-does not use special database. I want flat file system so it is easier to sync. I hate syncing 100 mb database file back and forth couple times a day.

Scrapbook
This is a great application-addon that does what I want very closely however it has problems with files synced over the network. When I sync scrapbook folders I need to restart FF, it does not refresh the database automatically which really sucks because it really has everything I need.

Webresearch
This is a great program but it is using proprierty  database format and provided syncing solution can only work if you sync the database across computers then manual operation. Basically first you sync(via another program) the database outside this application then you need to manually sync inside the application, whcih can get very confusing along the way.

I hate online solutions so I will never use them. I like to take care of my own stuff on my own computers on my servers. So no online social bookmarking-online scraping solutions are any good for me.

Any suggestions, ideas?

Hi
Does anyone know if it is possible to run an application as default desktop-desktop replacemen- stay on top of desktop? I know I can run htm, web application on the desktop but that is not what I need. I want an application to show up when I invoke minimize all (windows+m) . Althou my problem gets more complicated also because I use minimize, restore etc irregularly. I sometimes use min to tray, sometimes, hide, sometimes minimize, sometimes back to front etc. So I am really hoping that there is a way to keep an application on the desktop while rest of the apps can be minimized without destroying their window states and sizes.

I am not looking for a desktop shell replacement or something. I use a special calendar notetaking application and I would like this application to not to respect the " minimize all" command.
