What I would like to see is getting a digital copy along with the printed copy. For a $50 USD book, I'd pay $70 or $75 to get both. That's reasonable.

O'Reilly does this. You can register any print book published by them that you own and if it is available as an ebook, buy that for an additional $4.99.  That includes most titles from MS Press. All their ebooks are DRM-free and if there are multiple formats (pdf, ePub, mobi), they are all included in the price.

It would be nice if other publishers would operate this way, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Publishing is the original venture capitalism (dating from the 15th century) and the mentality of publishers is generally the same as any other venture capitalists.

[edit] I was working with this a little today. The fan does start and stop, so I guess that rules it out [/edit]

Most laptops will allow you to set the fan to stay on through the BIOS, if that's what you REALLY want.  I don't see why you would want the fan running when it doesn't need to be.  The power manager on Lenovo computers will allow you to set the fan to maximize performance, which is a better way to go, IMOH.

General Software Discussion / Re: New MailWasher - ugh
« on: December 25, 2010, 11:21 AM »
Does anyone else here feel exactly the same way about MailWasher? I really really regret moving away from MW6. It was *not at all clear* that I was moving from a purchased product to a yearly license. And on top of that, the new MW is pretty crummy for a multitude of reasons.

For an explanation of why Mailwasher Pro went to a subscription model, see here: http://forum.firetru....php?f=50&t=6550

I can't say I blame them. It costs money to keep software up to date, and $9.95 a year for two computers is not at all extortion IMHO. And if you have a MW6 license, there is nothing to stop you from re-installing it and using it forever.

MW 2011 isn't blazingly fast (nothing running on the .NET framework is!), but I like it better than MW6, so I'll gladly pay them $10/year to maintain and improve it.  Note that a $59.95 license is like paying for 6 years of subscription discounted in advance. Who knows where we'll be in 2017?

i will never go back to using a mouse without 2 buttons on the side.  i use them for Back and Forward when browsing the web and i could never do without them.  and of course only the certifiably insane would use a mouse without a scroll wheel.

I used to think the same, but have found that setting the side scroll functions to page forward and back works just as well, if not better than dedicated buttons. I use a variety of Logitech mice, all of which have tilt wheels, and this works well on all of them. I find it more intuitive than dedicated buttons, and it makes all my mice work the same for browsing.

Along the same lines, the cursor pads on ThinkPad notebooks have dedicated back & forward keys (filling the upper corners of the standard inverted T layout). I find these to be just as invaluable since I often cannot use a mouse when browsing on a notebook.

Paragon Software has put several of their products on sale at 50% off until December 15, after which they will go to 40% off until December 22, and 30% off until December 31.

http://www.paragon-s...09-Xmas-offer-3.html

In particular, Hard Disk Manager Suite 2010 (with free upgrade to HDM Suite 2011) for $24.99 and Hard Disk Manager Pro 2010 for $49.99.

Paragon Hard Disk Manager Pro has become my first choice for backups because it combines the functionality of many programs (backup & recovery, disk partitioning, virtualization etc.), although their interface doesn't always make it easy to find some of the more advanced features. I have found it to be far more reliable and stable than other backup and imaging programs I have used, notably Acronis True Image.

The Suite has most of the features of Pro but does not include virtualization management.  See http://www.paragon-s...onal/comparison.html for details.

Since HDM Pro makes it trivially easy to convert any Paragon backup disk image into a VM for VMware Workstation, VirtualBox or Virtual PC, I consider it to be the better deal, even at full price. You can buy the virtualization manager separately, and it is great for P2V or V2P, but it's as a combination with backup imaging that it really  shines, allowing you to make working VMs from your backups much faster and more reliably than the utilities provided for that purpose by VMware and other virtualization systems.

General Software Discussion / Re: Fastest Audio Converter
« on: December 05, 2010, 06:40 PM »
12000 seconds is 3 hours, 20 minutes, compressed into a 92 MB file. That means that you have a very highly compressed lossy format being converted to another lossy format.

With that kind of recording, I'd be more concerned about retained fidelity of the output than the speed of conversion, although I'd guess that the original file is not of high enough sound quality to notice much difference anyway. Have you compared the output from the different programs you tried?

I've been using Easy CD-DA ( http://www.poikosoft.com/) for years to convert between formats with excellent results.

It is fast, but not free - $32.23 or $53.71 for a lifetime license.  It has a 30-day trial period, so you can try it on your file and see if it is worth the cost to you.

Living Room / Re: Getting an HTC Desire HD -- Android Phone
« on: November 10, 2010, 06:36 PM »
HTC Droid Incredible, after more than a decade with Palm devices. No mobile phone offers a PIM that matches Palm's but a smartphone today is so much more than a PIM. I like it a lot. I also like the HTC Sense UI.

Android phones are really tightly integrated with Google and Google's services, which is good if you use them,  but some may not appreciate as much.  Apple has many more apps now, but I expect Android to catch up, at least for anything I'm interested in. It also allows some things that iOS can't at this time. My initial though was that animated wallpaper was a ridiculous concept, until I found that I could have my up-to-date local weather radar running as wallpaper. That's really useful where I live.

Some of us older folk still fondly remember XyWrite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XyWrite).

Android IS Linux and most Android apps are written in Java for the Android VM, which is based on the open source Harmony Java platform.  You can also write browser-based apps for Android using HTML, CSS and Javascript.

OS Information for my HTC Incredible phone running Android 2.2 (Froyo):

Kernel: Linux version 2.6.32.15-gb7b01d1 (htc-kernel@and18-2) (gcc version 4.4.0 (GCC)

Google does not require you to obtain apps through the Android Market, although individual vendors may. Doing so certainly makes it easier to keep apps upt-to-date, since the AM tracks revisions for each app downloaded through it and notifies the user when updates are available.

Living Room / Re: "ICE" Your Cell phone
« on: October 29, 2010, 07:20 AM »
Verizon offers a phone (Samsung Haven) designed for seniors that emphasizes simplicity and ease of use. It has both a dedicated 911 key and a dedicated ICE key. The ICE key brings up a list of up to 3 contacts to call in case of emergency, along with a medical notes field where one can provide important information to first responders.

The ICE contacts do not have to be in the regular contact list, but if they are, they are highlighted in red there, so the user can find them easily even without pressing the ICE key.

Living Room / Re: Windows Mobile 7 Review
« on: October 28, 2010, 09:42 PM »
While I complained about Windows Mobile and I won't be buying it myself. However, it most certainly does multitask. I routinely use my WM6 device to execute multiple applications simultaneously.

Windows Mobile did support multitasking, but W7P is NOT based on WM6. It is a completely new operating system derived primarily from the Zune media player operating system. That is why many of the reviews refer to it as a "1.0 version."

In the context of a mobile OS, multitasking means allowing processes connected to one app to run in the background while another app is in the foreground. Android is a Linux variant and allows developers to write their own background services.  iOS4 provides a limited set of background services that developers can access through an API. I don't know what mechanism RIM and WebOS provide for multitasking.

From what I understand, W7P allows some multitasking between the Microsoft built-in applications, but does not provide any mechanism for third party applications to have anything continue running in the background when switching to another foreground application.'

David Pogue reviews the Windows 7 phone in today's NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.c...e&ref=technology

I can't understand why Microsoft would  bring out a phone OS that does not support multitasking now, unless they hope it will can be a placeholder until they can put together something competitive. That's not going to work.

Microsoft's support for their PDA's has always been lousy. For years, the only way to get decent mobile support for Office applications  (Word, Excel,  Powerpoint) was to use Dataviz's Documents To Go on a Palm or Blackberry, and now, Android -- Dataviz has apparently been bought by RIM (Blackberry), but they have just released DTG 3.0 for Android a few days ago, and it is a real winner.

Techspot recently reviewed "budget" solid state drives and included the Seagate hybrid in their benchmarks.

http://www.techspot....-budget-ssd-roundup/

From their results, it sounds like a good deal for a notebook if you need more storage than you can afford from an SSD, but for desktop computers, you are better off with an SSD as a boot drive and a regular HD for data storage.

Gravic has several lines of OMR software that might suit your needs.

Remark Office (http://www.gravic.com/remark/officeomr/) allows you to print your own forms and scan them from just about any scanner.

Remark Classic  (http://www.gravic.com/remark/classicomr/) is designed to work with OMR scanners such as Scantron's.

I can't give you any information about accuracy or reliability.

Living Room / Re: Some initial reflections on using an ebook reader
« on: August 17, 2010, 03:17 PM »
I haven't seen the new Kindle DX, which sounds promising, but I have played with the Nook and various Sony models, and was not at all tempted by them for many reasons, not least of which is the low resolution relative to size (most are 600x800, the Sony Daily Edition 600x1024) and the (to me) highly distracting page flip blanking.

I've only seen the iPad briefly, but I can't really imagine reading anything for long on it - I own an 8 year old Panasonic Toughbook CF-R1 running Windows XP, which weighs 2.2 lbs and has one of the best screens I have ever seen on a laptop, with the same size (9.7") and resolution (1024x768) as the iPad. I use it frequently for reading PDF documents and web browsing, but I wouldn't really want to read a book on it, mostly because I find it too tiring to read on an LCD screen for any extended length of time.

That said, a couple of months ago, I traded my 4 year old Treo for an HTC Droid and to my great surprise, find it quite usable as an e-book reader.  It has an extremely sharp 3.7" 480x800 screen, which is not much less resolution than most e-book readers.  I had thought that I would find it hard to read on because of the small size, but to the contrary, find that I can hold it close enough to read without glasses, and because the screen is so sharp, not be distracted by resolution effects. It isn't really usable for technical documents in PDF format, but the free Aldiko reader handles ePub texts beautifully  with more flexibility than dedicated e-book readers (font, size, line spacing, color themes, layout, navigation, brightness, etc.).

It also helps that my Incredible has an AMOLED screen, which has greater contrast and less glare than the LCD screens on most smart devices, including the iPad. It's not a good choice for reading in bright sunlight, but indoors, and especially in bed at night, it is great. Unfortunately, because Samsung has decided to keep its entire production of AMOLED screens for its own devices, the newer Incredibles supposedly have SLCD screens. Samsung is expected to introduce a 7" Android device with an AMOLED screen later this year, which sounds interesting.

The Samsung Galaxy Tape is another option that may be available by September, if rumors are to be believed:

http://www.pcworld.c...blet_hype_begin.html

Supposedly it will have a screen res of 1024 X 600 (iPad is 1024 x 768) on a 7" diagonal Super Amoled screen. That's quite adequate for reading and viewing, in a substantially smaller package than the iPad, and with the advantages of Android rather than the closed iOS environment.

Paragon Virtualization Manager 9.5 is available for free until May 24, 2010

You can get it at: http://www.paragon-s...m/free/giveaway.html

This is the version prior to the current one and I don't know what has changed from PVM 9.5 to 2010, but if it works for you, the price is certainly right.
