Living Room / Per-user file associations
« on: June 06, 2008, 04:35 AM »
Finally I found a solution to set per-user file association! I've been looking for this for quite some time, but never found a software that would let me do this. :D

Then I came across the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\ which is where file associations are stored for current user (obviously). Maybe it's been mentioned here before, but this really has been bugging me so I thought I'd just post here in case anyone else was looking for it.

Now it's as simple as copying the key from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\ and changing the default open command in the latter. That way there's a default system association, i.e. .doc -> MS Word, that's overridden by the current user's setting, i.e. .doc -> TextMaker/OpenOffice/whathaveyou

Now if only there was a piece of software that would let me do this without bothering with the registry, I'd be happy. Any takers? It would make for a nice coding snack, I suppose. ;)

General Software Discussion / Software to create crosswords?
« on: May 19, 2008, 02:11 PM »
I'm going to create a couple of crossword puzzles for educational use (kids) and would like to know if anyone here has any experience with a decent piece of software for such a task?

Preferably free software, but I'd consider something inexpensive as well, ie. < $20(ish)...

I've googled a bit, obviously, but most of my findings are either too expensive for my use or they don't seem very good.

Any help is much appreciated!

RegexBuddy is an amazing tool to help you out with regular expressions. Personally I'm a few light years away from actually knowing decent regex, but with the aid of RegexBuddy I've certainly been able to accomplish the things I've wanted and learnt abit along the way. Highly recommended!

Do a search on DC and you'll see quite a few positive remarks about RegexBuddy!

edit: Added links. duh.

Point Motivator / Bug? Doesn't remember settings...
« on: January 19, 2008, 08:10 AM »
I've got Point Motivator to run on startup (apparently it will then be in the All Users-startup. Should preferably be in Current User, IMO), and I then keep it running all through my logged on session. But I've noticed that it seems PM doesn't save its settings if I log off while it's running. It doesn't lose any records or anything, but the options aren't saved. I need to close PM manually to keep any changes to the options.

Can anyone confirm this? Try to change the setting start minimized to the opposite of what you've currently got, then log off and log in again and see if Point Motivator has saved your setting. Thanks.
