I would suggest you all take a look at IZarc! I was shocked when it wasn't mentioned here.
I wouldn't swap my copy of IZarc for a farm down south.

POPCORN!
About 40 years ago when cable TV came along and then Showtime, we signed on for the service.
We got the movie channel connected and a program guide. My wife was all excited and wanted to invite her folks over to watch our first movie.
I told my father-in-law that I would buy the movie tickets if he bought the popcorn.
They showed up at the appointed hour and my FIL had a jar of Orville Redenbacher popcorn. We popped the corn in my electric popper and enjoyed the movie. My FIL bragged about the quality and flavor of Orville Redenbacher's finest the entire time they were here.
I had to replenish my popcorn supply before the next movie so added it to the grocery list. When I checked the popcorn isle at the supermarket I discovered that a bottle of Orville Redenbacher's finest cost about the same as four movie tickets. On the same shelf was a one pound plastic bag of JollyTime popcorn for 29 cents.
I opted for the JollyTime, came home, refilled the Orville Redenbacher jar with the JollyTime, hid the bag in a lower drawer, and placed the jar in the cabinet where it was usually kept.
Showtime came around and the folks showed up as usual. And as usual, we broke out the popcorn popper, which I dutifily charged with a shot of fresh kernals from the Orville Redenbacher jar. We watched the movie and enjoyed hot popcorn, Redenbacher's finast from the JollyTime bag. Everyone commented that you could really tell the difference when you bought the best. I agreed!
Until the day he died my father-in-law ate JollyTime popcorn from an Orville Redenbacher jar, raved about it's flavor, and enjoyed every kernal.
I buy nothing but the finast! <G>
 ;D
That's how legends are made!

Do I need monster HDMI cables?
No, HDMI monster cables are simply a monster rip-off.  If a cable is HDMI certified, it will by definition offer you a perfect digital signal.  Despite the fact that the electrical signals traversing an HDMI cable degrade as a cable gets longer, it will still offer perfect digital transmission so long as the signal loss or distortion is within a certain tolerance.  Analog cables might benefit from extra thickness and insulation because there’s not much you can do to fix analog signal loss or distortion other than to amplify and maybe filter the signal a little to mitigate the bad side effects.  But when it comes to digital technology, the signal is either all there or it isn’t.  There is zero measurable difference in the digital signal quality between the $6 HDMI cable and the $60 monster HDMI cable.

Caveat Emptor!

This is the thread I just posted about.

Guys,
File notes is old hat. I posted this Dec 7 and a long thread follows. Nod5 wrote File Noter to work with a 64 bit system, which works great and several more got into the act with File Notes, and modifications thereof.
I don't know how to get back to that thread from here but I suspect a search on Idea: File note 7 Dec would work.
You'll find a couple of kewl little utilities penned by a couple of resident coders. (Nod5 and Grorgy)
Big Jim also built a fire under Moonsoftware and they promised an update to FileNote.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back in 1999, Moonsoftware released a little app called FileNote. I used it so much it became second nature but when I moved up to a 64 bit OS it no longer worked. I emailed Moonsoftware about when it might be upgraded to 64 bit but received no response. It really is a neat little utility and when I ran across your site I thought it might be well to check since you guys seem to have talent bubbling out of your ears!

Thanks for the information however we're still skirting my question.
I knew what I signed up for, I knew what I was doing when I ran the enabling script, and knew what I consented to download and install.
What I don't know is what IS installed??
My properties sheet says, as does yours, that SP3, v.3311, was installed. Not being psychic I have no way of knowing that when decoded that means SP3, RC2. It seems to me to be a simple matter to report that SP3, RC2, build 3311, was installed when that in fact is what was done. Problem solved.
Someone in a forum reporting that I couldn't have SP3 because it hasn't been released yet is not information I can enter in a properties sheet. Maybe MS made a mistake was another comment. Entirely possible!
Just the facts ma'am, that's all I expect from MS. Plain and simple facts would answer all my questions.

Ahh, so you need a key to the code? As I posted previously, I have SP3 v.3311 and that's the code for RC2. How will I know when I get RC3?
I was expecting a notation in the properties sheet that SP3, RC2, v.3311, or something similar, had been installed. Not being privy to the coding system used I had hoped that SP3 was installed and I was done with it. Too much to hope for I guess!

You could not possibly just have gotten the Service Pack from Windows Update without knowing what you installed, seeing as the only way to get it is to either run the executable file from Microsoft manually that allows access to it from Windows Update, or by manually changing your registry to do the same thing. Nobody "just got it from WU" without having specifically requested it. Because of this, I'm having a really hard time understanding what the problem here is...?

That said, I've been using the SP3 RC for a few weeks now and I haven't had any problems with it.

Where would I look to determine if I have that update installed?
I would think that if SP3 RC is installed on a machine there would be an indication of it posted somewhere where one could determine that fact?
I cannot find any proof that SP3 RC has been installed on my machine.

This RC thingee is still bugging me. I've been through that machine and looked everywhere I can think of............. no indication that update was an RC version.
If a strange user sat down at that machine you'd see SP3 with a build number. Is the build number supposed to be proof positive that it's an RC or would you be lead to believe that SP3 has been installed? I'm getting too old for this!

Service Pack 3.V.3311

----------

On the 20th I received a file..........Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2.exe

Executing the file was supposed to add me to the Windows update list. I executed the file and this afternoon I got the notification in the tray that an update was available and I agreed to install.
The above is the result.
It appears you are correct about it being an RC.......... that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I can post the above exe file if anyone wants to give it a go?  :-\

That's good to know, Thanks!  :)

This would also be a good time to ask a stupid questions. One of a gaggle of questions that I maintain in my repertoire for just such occassions.   8)

Over the years I have wondered if it is possible to run an uninstall string outside the Add/Remove applet or the uninstall supplied by the application. There have been times when uninstall wouldn't work and yet the uninstall string in the registry appears to be perfectly valid. So close and yet so far! Any ideas?

"MyUninstaller is an alternative utility to the standard Add/Remove applet of Windows operating system. It displays the list of all installed application, and allows you to uninstall an application, delete an uninstall entry, and save the list of all installed applications into a text file or HTML file.

MyUninstaller also provides additional information for most installed applications that the standard Add/Remove applet doesn't display: product name, company, version, uninstall string, installation folder and more."

Anybody have any experience with this?

 FileMenu Tools - Version History
Version 5.3.2 - 01/19/2008

Customize your Windows right-click menu
Who doesn't love to right-click, especially when browsing the Web? Whether saving images we like to our local drives, copying HTML links to send to friends, or scanning downloaded files for viruses, the right-click has become an essential part of most users' computing lives.

Yet how many times have you right-clicked on a file in Windows and then painfully scoured a long list to find the only option you need; sometimes it's the only one you ever use. Wouldn't life be much simpler to have only the items you want in your right-click menu? Well, for Windows Explorer, it's mostly possible, and the free utility FileMenu Tools makes it rather simple.

General Software Discussion / Expert Help
« on: February 13, 2008, 01:39 PM »
I need an expert from out of town. Hell, maybe from out of the country?

"As of 2007 onwards, Samsung Semiconductors is expected to use its proprietary “Through Silicon Via” (TSV) with an all-DRAM stacking configuration – "................

The above line is from the website Memory Secrets.
I've downloaded the site and trying to edit out all extraneous script, etc., so I can compile it into a .chm file. That site is in the UK and I can't figure out how to clean up the formatting when I edit and save in Notepad ++.
There are several options for different formats such as Windows Format, Unix Format, UTF-8 with BOM, and more, but I still wind up with Greek in a saved file. Quotation marks and apostrophes seem to be the biggest offenders.
Am I making any sense and can anybody help? I'm too old to cry!

There is a list of Related Info links at the bottom of each page for those with a lust for this stuff!   8)

Ryan Leng is an independent technology consultant and auditor for corporations in computer systems involving hardware, software, networking, security, IT policy formulation and training.

Originally trained in Computer Science and Economics, he has since worked in many fields relating to computer hardware integration, software design and engineering, surveillance systems, advertising, multimedia production, user-Interface engineering and graphic designs.

Ryan approached bit-tech with his unpublished book on DDR technology a short while ago, and when we read it we were greatly impressed with the depth and attention to detail, as well as being able to convey complex ideas in an easy to understand manner.

Whether you are adept in the knowledge of memory technology, it’s still an interesting read for a fundamental part of a PC architecture. We’ve cut his work up into several parts, the first of which we’ve published here covers the basics. The information published here is merely an excerpt of a much larger document.

General Software Discussion / Re: Idea: File note--Update
« on: January 28, 2008, 04:38 PM »
I'm finding some answers. The problem is not in filenoter.zip or filenoter.exe. The problem is Avast. I haven't heard from them yet but I removed Avast from the XPPro machine and installed AVG. The filenoter.exe file is unlocked, the context menu works as designed. Filenoter, filenotes, Universal Viewer are all back and working fine.

Unfortunately I can't say the same for XPPro64. Reinstalling filenoter doesn't help.  The upgrade from Moon Software that BigJim mentioned earlier is available for download so I installed that but there's no change in the context menu so the corruption persists. I'm going to try a repair install now and see what happens. If push comes to shove I can do a clean install to a new drive, identical to the drive that's in the machine.
