Is this of any value to anyone?

Thanks for the link, vegas.
"Fine, you want (monster) quality cables without paying the 800% markup.  www.MONOPRICE.com"
I just ordered from there. The old Radius monitor I mentioned in a previous post was sans a data cable and the ones at MONOPRICE solved my problem at an unbelievably low price. That's a good link to rat-hole for us old junk collectors

General Software Discussion / Unallocated drive space
« on: April 29, 2008, 01:50 PM »
Got a new problem and wondering if there is a solution?
About a month ago I bought an old computer w/monitor that had Win2K installed. The price being about the same as two loaves of bread I grabbed it!
Cracked the password, put in a new vid card and it's up and running.
Now I decide to replace the 8GB HDD.......... yeah, right!
There is a hidden partition or unallocated space that I can't image, copy or clone.
I tried TrueImage 7, then TrueImage 11, then XXClone, and finally Seagates Diskwizard software. I can't get a bootable image, or copy, onto a new Seagate drive with any of those.
Being a Yard Sale bargain there was no CD included so to save that copy of Win2K I've got to figure out how to copy those boot files from that unallocated space. I'm assuming it's raw disk space and wondering if that information can be recovered???
It works fine the way it is and I have no real need for a copy of Win2K but that's not the way that boys think.
If I could get the OS imaged I might put it on a newer machine? or not! The process of copying something from a raw drive is what intrigues me.
By the way, the monitor included in the deal is a Radius Intellicolor Display/20e and has the best picture of any monitor in the house. An old multisync from about 2001 weighing in at about a hundred pounds. Damn, it is one heavy old monstor.
TIA for any enlightenment.

Just ran across this..... slipstream SP3
http://tinyurl.com/5fud7a

I'm not sure the finished product is worth the effort but boys must have their toys.
It's a way to dump Movie-Maker and Messenger so maybe that will justify the time and effort it takes to put it together.

I've been trying for two days to download this. Getting nowhere if I did get a connection and finally nothing but 404s.
About 1:30 PST here in Calif. I tried the last link at the bottom of the list at MajorGeeks and it came pumping down like I was the only man at the pump!
It just finished about 10 mins ago so if you couldn't get a connection previously give tail-end charlie a go.

Nod,
The new version works fine and the date-time stamp is a nice touch. I should add that it works fine in Win 2000 as that's where I installed it when you posted the current version.
Thanks again!

I have 3 experiences of my credit card being charged without my knowledge. Two of those were in the US and one in Spain.

Sorry Curt, but you and I have obviously had greatly different experiences, both in life and with GAOTD.
In a previous life I used to fly multi-engined jet aircraft across the Atlantic , the Pacific, and various other large puddles of water, and usually loaded with passengers. I've been quite well programmed to err on the side of caution!
The rewards of downloading software from GAOTD are not great enough for me to plunge into accepting products when I have no idea what's in the box. I have downloaded a few and usually usually dumped them within hours of installing. I think I still have a couple on this machine but they aren't important enough to me to even remember what they are. I have yet to see one that "I couldn't live without". I have gigabytes of software ratholed on CDs, DVDs, HDDs and floppies, both 3 1/2 and 5 1/4 that came from similar operations, since 1988 or 89, so I'm really not hurting for software. I can afford to let this "opportunity" slip out of my hands and since somebody has raised doubts and had problems with stuff from GAOTD, I'm going to forego their offers.
Apparently you enjoy what they present? Please be my guest and help youself. I'll refrain!
YMMV

Here's the info from the comments in last sat. GAOTD...........

"I still get e-mails from GAOTD so every once in awhile I check to see the offerings. But I read the comments and still stay away. I am mainly suspicious of where all these programs are coming from.

So far just about every GAOTD offering are from developers in China and former Eastern Bloc countries.

I dunno, but maybe no one minds. Maybe this is an “international site” where members are also in Europe or Asia, so it’s not a big deal that the software if coming from questionable sources.

— edited —

No offense to anyone, but the only time I have been burned with ID theft and credit card ripoffs is when I bought from Chinese or “Eastern Bloc” vendors.

So no more for me.

OK, I guess it’s my mistake. GAOTD is a foreign run operation. I did not know that. Guess that explains the varied locations of all the posters in here.

I apologize, did not mean to insult anyone. But this will be my last post and visit. Good luck and have fun.

WhoIs on GAOTD. Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands, by the way:

I picked it up from an RSS feed!

http://www.freelists...4-2008/msg00150.html

A couple of days ago, maybe the weekend Giveaway, I was reading the comments posted by others that had gotten the giveaway and checked on the source.
When I read the comments I immediately unsubbed from GAOTD. Saturdays main offering I think???
If you can't find it I can boot up another machine and get that eMail msg by downloading it from the server with OE.
I dumped it!
YMMV :(

Beware the downloads......... I just saw on another forum they're spreading a virus.

That site is also suspect. It's on some remote offshore island that I neverheard of????

Update:
I don't think this is a virus. It's a nasty playmate!

""Outpost Antivirus Pro.

Onto two computers:

Outlook would not even start; Firefox locked up; Internet Exploder locked
up; every program on my systems except Forte Agent locked up until I
uninstalled the *W#(@#$&$(*& Outpost Antivirus Program.  When I rebooted and
got Outlook to run, I was informed that the Outpost AV addin had caused the
problems and "did not play well with others." "

I'm up and running with the workstation per the instructions in the .pdf guide. No problems, the instructions are great, (and voluminous) and so far it all looks good.
I've never seen Vista but sure got to see it with this project. I installed the Vista Sidebar in the course of following the guide. I'm still postulating but I don't think me and that sidebar are gonna be able to co-habitate? I haven't really played with it yet but that sidebar uses a lot of real estate and reminds me of something provided by a government subsidy program.
Hindsight being what it is, I now realize that I could as easily have downloaded the 64bit version since that machine is running a Celeron with EM64T and that does a great job with this copy of XPPro64. Maybe later, different machine, another 240 days, who knows?

UPDATE:
TrueImage 7 nor 11 will not install because the workstation is still a server per the Acronis "detection"???

Fodder,
I'm here to tell you we both have to learn to use the KISS answers, which in this case, "you came from Cleveland" would have worked as well as the info above that I posted in reply to the question "where did my 4GB of ram go"?
As near as I can tell there has been nary a nibble on the valuable info we gathered and posted.
I've come to the conclusion that facts are boring! People want answers with some excitement and "from Cleveland" is about as exciting as it gets. If you have ever been to Cleveland you know that being "from Cleveland", farrrrr from Cleveland, really makes your day!
Thanks again everybody.......... I'll be in touch!

General Software Discussion / Shell Tools.... Moonsoftware
« on: April 04, 2008, 11:01 PM »
http://www.moonsoftw...e.com/shelltools.asp
Shell Tools is out. Moonsoftware has included a handful of their old utilities, including FileNote, in Shell Tools. Unfortunately they still didn't include the 64bit extensions so we didn't gain much except for the bundling. I'm going to load it up on the 32bit machines though.......... I love new toys!
I've used their utilities over the years and enjoyed them. When I discovered that FileNote wouldn't work on this 64bit version of XPPro I almost cried. Nod jumped in and saved me then others added improvements so we survived.
BigJim set out to discuss our plight with the guys at Moonsoftware when FileNote came up and he was advised that they were going to fix it. If there is anyone here with a little authority I'd suggest a little chit-chat with BigJim about getting results. I've heard of cases where when the desired results weren't obtained the "Big" disappeared. :-\
YMMV

Hey guys, thanks for the input. These tools impressed me but I'm wondering if the young lady that sprung for 4GB mem but only got credit for 3GB in properties will even pause long enough to digest what they are looking at??
I'll present the apps to the masses and see what kind of response they get? It may be that the question can be answered as easliy as the one "hey dad, where did I come from?" posed by the eight year old. Cleveland, you came from Cleveland, now go play! ;)
And Fodder, you're right! That block diagram or map I saw is the KISS answer and it's still available at Wiki, I'm sure.
I'll look again and in the meantime I'll fend off the wolves by feeding them the apps that Stoic Joker and cmpm turned up.
Thanks again guys!

I think my description of it may be a little oversimplified. And I'm sure there is a great deal more to it!
But remember......... when the eight year old asks where she came from simply say Cleveland, along with the rest of us, and she'll go away. The long dissertation about the facts of life really isn't necessary.
The only reason she's asking is because the ten year old next door said she came from Chicago?

I've been running a 64bit system since MS released the trial. When the trial expired I bought a copy!
I have no complaints but it's hard trying to explain the problem to 32bit OS users. At one time I found a diagram of the 32bit memory address space that showed that the top of the bucket was already full so you couldn't get 4GB of memory into the remaining space in the bucket. I think the graph was on Wiki but I can't seem to find it again. There's enough information about memory stored on Wiki now to choke a goat. I'll look again but right now I'm engaged in a brutal battle with a game of Freecell.
Thanks

General Software Discussion / Memory Information
« on: April 02, 2008, 09:59 AM »
TechRepublic posted some info about memory for those of us that have memory problems.

http://downloads.tec...8814&tag=nl.e101

"Tackle PC upgrades with a solid understanding of memory
This sample chapter from the latest edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs offers an exhaustive look at what memory is, how it works, and how it fits into PC architecture."

You have to be a member to download but it's free so the price is right!
TechRepublic is a treasure trove of information.

Well, that was a bust! I thought a little shame might work but apparently not.
I was thinking about something to use to explain to newbies why they can't get to use all 4GB of the new ram they just bought. Patches and reg hacks are going to increase with price of ram dropping, especially DDR2, and big rebates.
Of course they won't work either but they'll keep trying, and keep crying, and I'll keep trying to keep from crying!
Damn, there are times when I even make myself sick.
Thanks, Fodder

General Software Discussion / Memory Address Space
« on: April 01, 2008, 08:08 PM »
Is anyone aware of any software that graphically displays memory address space and where the physical memory is being used?
It would sure be easier to understand why you can't stuff 4GB physical memory into the 32 bit system address space if it was displayed in a graph and it would bloody well be a blast if you could watch the graph and make the memory dance by using or releasing some of it!
If there isn't anything like that around I'd be ashamed of myself if I were a programmer? Luckily I'm not!
It , of course, would be easier to explain it that way too. That's really why I'm looking.

Can somebody check it in another reader to see if the feed is bad or my reader is?
