General Software Discussion / Re: Readability and Reading List
« on: July 16, 2014, 11:28 AM »
I'm getting suspicious that you and Contro are trying to drive the old man bananas???
Before I go running off looking for Firefox please tell me that the links you posted above don't all go to the same place!
All three links take me to the original page........... no converted page in the whole lot!!!

and Contro.

you were following Virginia Murdock yesterday and that means you were in the Reading Lists feature at Readability.com and a fur piece from Read Now which is my topic of interest.

I've got Google Chrome installed and the Read Now add-on installed easily on that so I'm going to do some testing on that before I chase down Firefox.
Convince me that you have a stripped down web page saved to your HDD in html format........
dare ya!

Contro,

We are not even close to discussing the same subject!
You seem to have wandered off into the woods and got lost???
I think the only way back is for you to install "Read Now" from Readability.com.............
open a very busy and cluttered web page.............
Convert it by clicking on "Read Now" in your menu bar............
When the cleaned up page comes up you can compare it with the original page.
The converted page should have a link to the "Original".

Try Readability...........
it's free
a simple add-in.............https://www.readability.com/

It satisfies my needs with the exception of saving. It has no provision to save the simplified file??

I drop the simplified source code into Notepad2, which handles html nicely, and save as an uncluttered web page. Neat and sanitary but more time consuming than I'd like.

Thanks,
I glanced at your ideas and there's nothing there I can use.
Text files won't work......... I need the images.
"QuickJS" doesn't work in IE.
Links don't help........ I want an uncluttered web page saved to my HDD.
SC or parts of a page is not what I'm after.
I'm looking for a way to save a web page, converted by Readability, using java script, as an HTML file that I can open in IE11.
Thanks again...

Is anyone familiar with the browser add-on Read Now and Read Later from Readability.com or MS's own Reading Lists, which does basically the same thing?

"Readability

https://www.readability.com/

Readability is a web and mobile app that zaps online clutter and saves web articles in a comfortable reading view."

I found Readability a while back and thought my problems were solved......
not true!
Only partially........
My memory is bad and getting worse so rather than save something to Favorites I save the web page. As you all know, web pages are getting larger and larger and only about 5% of the page is data you want to save.
Readability has come up with a partial solution and from what I can gather they have stopped further development.
Using Read Now add-on you come up with a page stripped of all the clutter and left with the "meat of the matter" for your perusal. Nice!!
Now my problem enters the picture...........
when I save the converted page I get a copy of the original page and not the stripped down page (I'm smelling java!)
I contacted Readability.com and the man on the phone suggested I try saving as EPUB or something. duh!
Currently, as a workaround, I've been viewing the source of a page, copying the source, dropping it into Notepad2, and saving it as the original title.htm.
I get what I want with this method but it is time consuming and I'm frustrated that so seemingly a simply problem is so damned complex.
With the "Cloud" in the mix and 90-95% of their storage space consumed by superfluous clutter I don't understand why this is still a problem.
I'm a two-fingered-hunt and peck typist who hasn't even written a .bat file in the last 20 years so I'm worthless as part of the solution!
Anyone know anything about this that would solve the problem?

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Windows 7
« on: March 14, 2010, 10:52 AM »
The price quoted on their site for the software is for a downloaded copy. If you want the CD it's $10 additional!

At the moment this deal is looking like a scam. I tried to get some info on shipping because it was taking so long and received an email last night (Saturday night) that the CD would be mailed "the first thing Monday morning" after having been told previously that it has already been shipped.
Odds are good that I've been "had". >:(

I ran across vender that is operating similar to Serial Sellers (Sales?) in that they are buying large quantities in bulk and selling individual applications.
I hesitate to recommend them at the moment but I have a CD for Win7 in the mail. I've been running the RC and it's rebooting every two hours........ until that CD gets here
The reason I called: I'm wondering how many people are interested in buying Win7 (any version) or any other software?
I told the guy on the phone that I placed the order with that if everything was legit and worked out OK that I might have some more customers for them. This would seem like a good time to do a little wheeling and dealing to maybe get a lower price or at least get free shipping. They are charging $10 US for the CD with free shipping, otherwise it's a download?? (BIG download)
My CD should arrive here early next week and I can poke it into this machine immediately so I can get more answers.
Post your name and what you want so I can cut and paste to develop a list, unless there's a better way to come up with a list?
I don't know if they will ship outside US but I can find out exactly what software they will have available and their prices.
I'll get back here early next week after I get Win7 installed. :)

What's the Best? / Re: Best file archiver/compresser
« on: March 13, 2010, 02:21 PM »
I just posted a reply to this in the wrong place!
I suggested: http://www.izarc.org/
as an archiver/compressor app.
Open it up, select all file formats, point it to your download folder and you're in business!
I've used it for years and would rather fight than switch! :-[

You might want to take a look at IzArc for a compressor app.
Open it up, select all file formats, point it to your downloads folder and you're off and running!

Here's a little different approach to saving web pages.
I've used HTTrack for years with good results but ran across this a few months ago and it has become indispensable.
Usually I download just the home page, or first page, of what I want to save and then go back later to get any remaining info that I want to keep. It's a simple, fast, easy way to grab something of interest!
I'm using the Lite or freeware version of Local Website Archive and seldom use HTTrack anymore. YMMV

"Local Website Archive

Local Website Archive offers a fast and easy way to store information from the web on your hard disk. Archived web pages and documents are stored in their original file format and can also be opened with associated applications or found by desktop search engines.

Local Website Archive can be used as WebSite-Watcher add-on or as stand alone program without WebSite-Watcher.

Local Website Archive is available as a professional and a freeware version."

General Software Discussion / Re: Super FDisk (iso)
« on: September 09, 2008, 07:52 PM »
Has anyone had a chance to test this software yet?
I'm curious about whether an external USB hdd shows up along with the other drives?
I don't have an external USB enclosure to use for testing.
We have a situation in another forum where a lady inadvertently compressed some files while trying to format an external hdd. Now it won't format, the files are locked and won't delete, and the only solution I can think of is to blow away all the partitions on the drive and reformat.
Any ideas?
TIA

Remember Fdisk?

Here's it's replacement and it works like a champ!

http://downloads.zdn...5026&tag=nl.e550

I burned the iso to CD and tried it on XPPro. It booted up without a problem and provides everything you'd want to know about your drives.

I stuck the CD in an old machine with Win2K. Again it booted up fine and even displays the parameters for the hidden partition containing the BIOS/CMOS/whatever?

Well worth the dime for the CD and beats messing with Fdisk!

I'm surprised that IZarc isn't mentioned. It's the only one I use and I'd rather fight than switch.
Install, select all extensions, set it to extract to C:\All downloads and you have a new folder with the extracted files in All downloads. Use "Move To" in the menu bar in Win Explorer to put the whole kaboodle where you want it.
Go to lunch?

Anyone looking for trouble?
I found some!
Polar Help Desk freeware..........
http://www.polarsoft...l.asp?intProdID=1929
There's a freeware version there which I have downloaded and installed on XPPro64 and XPPro32. I have IIS installed on both machines and the setup for Polar declares a successful install.
I can't get it to work on either machine!
Up front........ I have absolutely no need for a help desk. I ran across the software by accident and was curious to know if it could be adapted to categorize and index tips and tweaks.
If anyone is interested in playing with it I would be happy as hell to learn how to make it work.
It may be worthless for what I was trying to do but gravity wasn't a high value item either until somebody figured out how it worked!

General Software Discussion / Re: Reliable web page capture...
« on: July 16, 2008, 11:20 AM »
How about mirroring the entire site and then picking out the page/pages you want?

"HTTrack is a free (GPL, libre/free software) and easy-to-use offline browser utility.

It allows you to download a World Wide Web site from the Internet to a local directory, building recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer. HTTrack arranges the original site's relative link-structure. Simply open a page of the "mirrored" website in your browser, and you can browse the site from link to link, as if you were viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and resume interrupted downloads. HTTrack is fully configurable, and has an integrated help system.

WinHTTrack is the Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP release of HTTrack, and WebHTTrack the Linux/Unix/BSD release. See the download page. "

Apparently you have the problem solved but I ran across DBXConv.exe recently and you might want to rathole the tool for possible use in the future.
http://tinyurl.com/2ztxh5
The app converts OE dbx files to eml or mbx (Outlook) files which can be opened in a text editor. It's a freebie, command line tool so the price is right and it works!
