Hi Mouser.

Thought of a little script the other day and actually got it working, which must mean 'I got something done'.
Therefore I will enter and share on the 1st of December.

Living Room / Building a Freeware PC + windows
« on: October 29, 2007, 03:55 AM »
For all the freeloaders out there, here is a interesting article linking 53 freeware apps, + windows.
The article is about rebuilding a machine, using just a windows and freeware.

good quick read of the main article
http://www.freewareg...l-freeware-programs/

there look to be some keepers in among some of the apps we already know
a few I will be giving a run, but already this looks great for the icon designers

This is my work PC, I try to take care of this machine.

Which by my standard is impressive, because my home machine gets trashed regularly.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Very simple timeclock utility
« on: September 16, 2007, 12:43 AM »
Just a quick note.

There are a number of things I want to change/update here. I think I will add it as my GTD of 2007.

dealbreakers for PDF-exchage:
no keyboard shorcuts
no way to undo a highlight
No way to remove toolbars

These are minor things, I bet it takes less that 24h dev. time to fix them... are they responsive to user requests in their forums?

Hi urlwolf,

I use PDF exchange daily now.
No way to undo a highlight - when cursor is over highlighted text, Right click delete, (does not delete text, just the markup)
No way to remove toolbars - View > Toolbars > all there
No Keyboard shortcuts - Not sure what you mean, Alt key for all menus is there or did you mean customisable shortcuts.

Living Room / Re: How do you organise your 'My Documents' folder
« on: August 21, 2007, 01:43 AM »
Being notoriously bad at staying organised. (I failed mousers GTD experiment) I am leaning towards a more automatic system. I have been using the Client/Theme/Job folder name approach for the last couple of years, but sometimes fail on the discipline of maintaining it.

I might try some of the auto-file moving utils out there, use X1 to index it all. just cant decide on alphabetical or extension.
Not that I have much time anymore, but I might even try a AHK solution.

(And of course, multiple backups before and after trying anything)

Living Room / How do you organise your 'My Documents' folder
« on: August 20, 2007, 07:23 AM »
After a few years of collecting and creating documents, the 'My Documents ' folder has started to burst at the seams. I sat down the other day determined to clean this mess up. but how? I dont really want to delete or archive anything, just organise it properly, and keep it organised.

The ideas i had where
1- A to Z folders with everything filed alphabetically
2- folder based on extensions, ie MyDoc folder, MyPDF folder, MyPics folder, MyTXT folder, MyDWG folder
3- folders based on job/client/theme
4- All piled into one folder, and allow a file search program to locate stuff (X1)

Each has its advantage and disadvantage
1 and 2 can be automated, which is appealing, 3 is practical if you can maintain it, and 4 is just lazy but also easy.

maybe some members here can offer their wisdom. especially if they use 1 or 2

« on: August 10, 2007, 02:39 AM »
Top three excluding browser and email.

1 . ToDoList    (keeps my life semi-organized)
2.  Stickies     (post it notes for the desktop, un-organized stuff)
3.  GoodSync   (thumb drive sync program, just started using, love it)

« on: July 20, 2007, 04:42 PM »
BTW on a sidenote are there hotkeys for cascade windows, tile horizontally/vertically?

None in Windowz xp, not sure about vista.
I had a talk with jgpaiva a little while ago about tiling, and as he is far more educated in scripting then myself, we will see what he comes up with. :)

DcUpdater / update frequency
« on: July 14, 2007, 03:59 AM »
Hi Mouser

can DCU have a option to choose the update frequency
- dcu start
- daily/weekly/monthly  (maybe per app, but not important)

N.A.N.Y. Challenge 2007 / Re: Backup Revision Folder
« on: June 03, 2007, 07:17 AM »
FileHampster is excellent. I wish I had found it before I tried to roll my own. I guess one advantage is that if you know AHK you can alter it to suit your needs.

Is it possible to select all files in a folder that have a specific extension, so that the program automatically monitors and backs up changes of that file type?

That would be much more protective, in case a user doesn't remember to add a file to your listing.
-HankFriedman (May 31, 2007, 10:21 AM)

sounds like a great idea, i will see what I can do.

How about CSVed
http://csved.sjfrancke.nl/index.html

All the power you will ever need to manipulate a CSV file.
The help file is limited, so sometimes you need to explore and learn.

Load a CSV file into the app,   pay attn to the 'Set Separator' and refresh

You can modify/replace/search/prefix/suffix etc , its all there, plenty of power under the hood.
or even better....

Hi Nighted

Calimanjaro does look interesting, and somewhat familiar, in fact it looks exactly like Yagoon   http://www.yagoon.com/index.htm

And here is the rub, neither look like they are currently being developed. Both just sit there collecting license money which is a real shame because once you get use to the views, its magnificent.

but..
There are a couple of bugs that need attention. ie. in multiday view, some events do not show up in the far right column if they start after 1200
so in a simple two day view, you really only get 1.5 days.

the versions are different, and I will try Calimanjaro just to see the differences.

I will email Calimanjaro, as I had no luck contacting Yagoon

Interestingly
Release Notes
March 18, 2007
Calimanjaro 1.1.3 has been released.

March 14, 2006
Yagoon Time 2.3 has been released.

The ical function is great though, and I wish more calendar applications utilized this.

Brett

Edit* Yagoon (time.exe) is very heavy on memory, considering it sits in the tray all day, this can be a burden.

Hmm... somehow this feels weird. Downloading an archive of a website to improve the searchability doesn't strike me as the 'correct' approach. Surely we need to invest our effort into better searchability on the web?

The first thing that leaps to mind is that I can now carry DC on a large thumb drive, all of wonderful DC, every little bit.
Show me a web search that matches Copernic and I will gladly change. Thanks for the effort Wordzilla, truly helpful.

even funnier, can you find 'the hidden part'

well worth the search

tip , you will use the mouse.

That looks nice.

Yes, a preview of all open apps on the right, a working area on the left
previews have a small number hint displayed

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Gridmove - feature request
« on: April 08, 2007, 02:47 AM »
Hi JGPaiva

Gridmove has inspired this idea/request.

This would mainly be beneficial to twin monitors.
in short, the right monitor show a preview of all applications active, and the left monitor is the work area.

Most of my work is predominantly done on the left monitor, and the right for reference and keeping a eye on different apps.

What I would like -
- to have a grid on the right monitor, and a full screen on the left.
- the grid on the right auto detects apps that are open and grids accordingly (2x2, 3x2, 3, 3x4 custom etc)
- when a new application is started, become full screen on left, and existing full screen is swapped to right and new grid shown.
- when i select a window on the right grid, it automatically expands and swaps to full screen on the left
- when a swap occurs, the app that was full screen (left) is now shown on the right screen in the grid.(swaps position)
- selection of grid windows by mouse or shortcut, ie ctrl-alt-3 would swap left monitor with grid no#3 window
a quick dc irc discussion suggested this could be done by a 'gridmove command' that when activated would automatically swap with the biggest grid location. thus allowing single screen users a similar function.

if this is not entirely clear, just let me know and I will try some mockup screen shots etc.

this might also be a entirely new application, but it fits the 'gridmove' feel and functionality

Hi Ruffneck

This link is geared more towards writing novels, but its worth a look (and freeware)

It could probably be adapted for a number of uses.

He has a number of other useful utilities as well.

Living Room / Poll : What is the most useless key on the keyboard
« on: February 10, 2007, 07:22 AM »
If you had to physically remove a key from your keyboard, what one could you do without.

It has to be a single key, so combinations are not allowed.
No multimedia extra buttons are in this poll, just a standard keyboard.

This poll is to find out what keys might be good to use for shortcuts in small/quick scripts.

After this poll has finished, I will also do a poll for the most annoying Key on the Keyboard.

poll runs for 30days
