Found Deals and Discounts / Re: IDimager Pro 50% off
« on: April 27, 2012, 12:43 PM »
Idimager is in another league (a higher one) with regards to image organization.  You can create your own scripts for all possible management scenarios and you can download a lot of them from the forum.  That said, the learning curve is immense and the nomenclature used for the various categories of groups, tags, and database structures is not exactly intuitive. In my eyes it is really a tool for professionals (and perhaps micromanaging zealots).

I've tried this one...looks REALLY similar to acdsee pro.  What does it do that makes it unique or special?  I couldn't really tell.

Whatever file manager I would be using (currently "xplorer2"), for me the most important file management related tool is not a file manager but Listary - it makes navigating so much faster and easier after remembering two keyboard shortcuts (it works great with xplorer2).

General Software Discussion / Re: uTorrent alternatives?

yeah, Opera for me. Why not?

Try the Opera browser or NetTransport.

Comodo Dragon (like SRWare Iron but with automatic updates) and Opera.  I very much wish however all the TabMix plus options would be supported by those.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: DrawPlusX5 50% on BDJ
« on: March 11, 2012, 11:27 PM »
I do not have X5 (using X4 instead) but just wanted to point out that DrawPlus is indeed a fantastic piece of software for artistic drawings on a PC.  It can render fantastic vector art, that does not look like typical vector art.
Sometimes I finding searching for some small features that I am used from Corel Draw and cannot find an equivalent in DrawPlus.  It is not as feature complete as CorelDraw, but for me a lot faster andit has these cool painting-like tools.

BTW, this sale is still on TODAY.

Hi Curt,

Photoline is more like photoshop (but can also do some drawing and some desktop publishing).  The 64bit version will certainly handle your filesizes (I have not used the 32 bit version for more than a year or two). I have read here on DC that Xara 5 is available for free at the moment - the Xara people often claim that their product is unbeaten in handling large bitmaps.

35
Hi Curt,

it seems your looking for a solution that creates your collages automatically?  If so, my suggestions likely won't help.

For laying out your pictures manually: Any image editor capable of using layers should do the trick. Photoline (my favorite) certainly does and the free Gimp, Paint.Net, and RealWorld Paint (introduced on DC) should do too.
Perhaps a bit easier to use are actually drawing applications for this purpose (no need to dig into layers); the free Inkscape and DrawPLus SE should do this very nicely.

... just two days ago I discovered the fantastic "batch replace" tool in EMeditor - it saved my a##.  Dedicated one-trick tools for this do cost more than this fully featured editor.

37
Thanks Kurt for the tip,

that was a better deal for me than fineprint or priprint. Does everything I need.

This looks great.
Are you thinking of adding Linux systems to the happy-sharing community?

I hope that the next "Transfomer" won't be this brownish ugly.   :(  >:(  :(

Drag-able panels could indeed be convenient.  You are right about ACB Plus.

41
Thanks Tuxman for the insights.
I am using the old xplorer2 and guess I would certainly appreciate improved previews.  I am not so sure about floating windows - to me one big advantage of commander style file managers has always been the structured all-in-one-view and the fact that it mostly avoids flipping through hidden and overlapping windows.  For example I might like the another file manager best for its intuitive features (AC Browser Plus), if it were not for its independently floating and overlapping panes.

AFAIK, you get about 3 sets of fonts derived from a standard set; and additional outlined one, one with shadows, etc.....
Typology enthusiasts certainly tend to not appreciate softmaker, the company offering this set.

General Software Discussion / Re: Linkman 8.1 Update Available

Thanks for the notice!

Hi,
you might want to try JAlbum which comes in two flavors: as an online picture album ( http://jalbum.net/en/create/photo-album/ )  and a as a free desktop software (Win, Mac, Linux) to create album websites on the server of your choice ( http://jalbum.net/en...is-jalbum?ref=footer ) or on theirs.
The quality and the choice of skins for the albums are spectacular ( http://jalbum.net/en/skins ) and many skins have plenty of customization options including user comments, shopping cart etc.  .
They have easy and straightforward stuff. Some ambitious examples are at:

Hey guys,
just as a reminder - this part of the forum is called the "Living Room" and not the bathroom.

Thanks all for your suggestions!

Rjbull, that sounds indeed simple and safe.
Which program could be used for such a scheduled transfer?

Hi Stoic Joker,

Yes, principally they are worried about bugs jumping off the USB drives. I guess they would like to be protected against malicious intent nevertheless.  No, not all users can be screened - they receive a training before using the machines, though.  These machines do analytics as a service.  Data do need to get transferred perhaps 10 time a day.
Simply disabling autoruns might be efficient, but taking some degree of paranoia into account, I do not believe this primitive solution would have a chance to be implemented.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions!

Hi Deozaan,

Thanks for your thoughts.  I guess a potential solution would have to be no more than a small program or anything else easy and small. Otherwise my chances of convincing head of the lab are minimal.  No, "of course"  :) one cannot access the internet from these machines, no email - for safety reasons.

Hi all,

I am working in lab with several windows machines running very expensive lab equipment. The head of the lab has disabled all usb ports in fear of virus transfers.  Consequently getting data off these machines is a pain in the b#*t, because only few of the personal are allowed to transfer data off via FTP transfers.
Is there a better option to keep these machines "safe without any doubt" (paranoia has to be considered) and still somehow enable users to transfer their data on a USB stick?  Is there a way to create a "sandbox" on these windows machines and allow people to only transfer data out of this sandbox to their USB drives and disable any other transfers?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Lutz
